Ya Gotta Have Hope

“Hope is the only universal liar who never loses his reputation for veracity.”
— Robert G. Ingersoll

Jed York may or may not be conducting a dog and pony show in his highly publicized search for the 49ers next GM, but at the very least he must be getting a football 101 education. Reportedly, he interviewed another couple of guys for the job on Monday. That’s six or seven by our unofficial count. And each one of these fellows is offering up free advice on how to run a football enterprise. In return, they get a free plane ride to and from San Francisco.

The last job interview I had was for a temp job with Manpower in 1973 and that effort ended after about ten minutes when they threw me out of the office, so I’m not the best guy to explain what the hell goes on in these two or three hour sit downs at 4949 Centennial Blvd. It seems mysterious, but if we were to get a bootlegged transcript, it would probably not be scintillating material. Just a hunch.

Appearances and perceptions cut a lot of mustard out there in the football tabloid world. The previous perception was that Jed rushed into signing Mike Singletary, making an emotional rather than critical decision. In that case, perception turned out to be reality, and Jed’s qualifications to lead the franchise took a big snickering-up-your-sleeve hit.

The kid is crossing his T’s and dotting his I’s this time around. It doesn’t mean he’ll make the right decision, but at least he’ll get the good old boy approval for failing correctly, should things turn out bad again.

The same holds true for the upcoming search for a new HC. I don’t know if Jim Harbaugh will turn out to be a good head coach for the 49ers, but I can say the same for any coach they hire. What’s important now is that he is perceived to be a good hire. Catering to the fans is not the way to do business if that is all you are doing, but in Harbaugh’s case the perception is also legitimate, since his stock is high throughout the NFL and with Bay Area fans. If he fails, fans will have to share equal blame with ownership for making the wrong choice.

Not that fans would accept any blame, of course. Haha. No, baby. That ain’t the way it works. Fans always knew last year what would happen this year as soon as this year actually happens. This hindsight license is included in the exorbitant price of tickets to the ball park. Fair is fair.

Perception can buy a floundering fan base a year of hope, though. There is something to be said for that. Cleveland just used up their free hopeful year following the hiring of Mike Holmgren last January. Next year, Cleveland will be looking for a lot more than another 5-11 record, however, and Seneca Wallace/Jake Delhomme are not going to deliver that. They delivered Eric Mangini’s head on a platter, which may have been Holmgren’s hidden motive in signing them.

49er fans are in great shape for the Hopemobile, though. We could probably have an entire year of hope even if York didn’t hire anybody to be the new HC and just put a cardboard cutout on the sidelines labeled “Not Mike Singletary.” The OC could throw it on the field instead of the Red Handkerchief to challenge a referee’s call.

It’s ideas like this that got me thrown out of the Manpower office, however, so I’ll just step aside and hunker down over the Twitter feed today. It’s going to be hot and heavy, now that Harbaugh has finished up his Stanford career. Let’s hope Jed pulls this one off. He could use the positive vibes and so could we.

Hey guysd , just read this from Profootballtalk..A league source tells Profootballtalk.com that the 49ers may ultimately not hire Trent Baalke as GM, and instead opt to pair Michael Lombardi with Jim Harbaugh as general manager and head coach.
“Lombardi and Harbaugh have a close relationship,” the source said. “I think Lombardi is ending up there.” Baalke was initially expected to be hired “within 48 hours” midway through last week, but it was never announced. Lombardi and Harbaugh also spent time together in Oakland, when Lombardi oversaw some personnel decisions and Harbaugh coached quarterbacks. It’s a match that would likely be much more appealing to fans.

Rumors are flying all over the place, Tony. Fasten your seat belt.

Hope can exculpate itself from our seasons since 1995, and especially since after 2002, it is all we have had.

49ers were going to interview Marvin Lewis as token minority. He appears to now be staying in Cincy. Next token minority, Hue Jackson.
I thought the GM was hiring the coach? This could only mean the GM is already hired but not announced, or getting the Rooney rule satisfied is what is going on here.

The fact it hasn’t been announced that Baalke is the new GM leads me to think there’s something else going on.

Maiocco thinks Baalke will be named later today. Sure seems that way. Why else would they interview a HC without the GM already in place. Jed better hope he wins the “Harbaugh Sweepstakes.” If not, the storming of the Bastille will look like a visit from the Avon lady compared to the bum’s rush perpetrated upon 4949 Centennial Blvd.

just out looks like Rich Rod is out of Michigan so there officially in the Harbaugh sweepstakes.
now can they match the reported 30-40 mil deal that Jed is waving around as a carrot for Jimmy boy, his stock is sky high now, but if he goes to Ann Arbor and bombs the shine will be a little less bright.

Harbaugh is heading for the rockies if Balki gets promoted to director of player personnel disguised under the GM title. Please cattle prod me if Harbaugh does get hired under Balki.

Plan B for Jed should be Hue Jackson as HC.

Nofear, you telling me that you weren’t impressed with Luck’s accuracy, poise, command, pocket awareness, mobility, ability to throw on the run and just the basic overall fact that he “gets it” when it comes to playing the QB position?
If so, you were watching a different game than I was.

I think Jed picked the wrong dance partner. Lombardi was the belle of the ball, but Jed probably prefers the blondes.

Maybe Jimmy and Balki find out that they like the same flavor of scotch, so this interview may work out in the morning.

Baalke has been named GM according to David White.

Good for you, No fear. Yer not quite sure about Luck? Way to crawl out on that limb. Luck may not be all that good because he had a good line in college? I guess they should have missed a few blocks so he got some plays under pressure.
No one is a lock. No one knew who Indy would draft, Manning or Leaf. Alex Smith, Tim Couch, JaMarcus, Akili Smith, etc. the NFL is littered with 1st round busts and 3-12 round gems.
Your point is what? That Luck’s going to fall to the 3rd round? That no one but you can tell how good or bad he is? He’s the #1 pick. He gets his shot based on what he’s done in college. This is how it works. There’s no other measuring stick.
The wonks that all supposedly know this feel the same way. Luck is the best of a strong crop of QBs.
Based on what you saw, should Carolina pass on him as their QB of the future, NoFear?

  13. bigtimNo Gravatar says:

the big news tonight was not only is Baalke the new GM but that when asked if he could work with Baalke or Lombardi he said either one would be fine.
in the interview with the Stanford AD he didn’t look real happy when asked about Harbaugh, but lauded his hard work for the time he was here, of course I am paraphrasing.
but he looked resigned to the fact that the Hottest prospect in coaching is done on the farm.
also several sources confirmed Harbaugh is over the Michigan position and is heading for the pros,I hope its to the niners but will keep my cautious optimism at bay until a actual presser is announced.

  14. bigtimNo Gravatar says:

    He would be Harbaugh.

as for Luck if he is going to get drafted by Carolina its going to be some tough sledding on that team.
new coach new team, kind od a bummer, really, if the niners could work out a trade then of course it would be a ideal situation, but if Harbaugh can make a decent QB like Luck develop into the polished player he is, then I feel he could do it again with another player with some high skill potential

  15. TonyNo Gravatar says:

Looks like Harbaugh….YES!!!NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi reportedly turned down an offer to work under Baalke in a lower position. CEO Jed York put a rush on the decision because Baalke will be needed to interview head coaching candidates, specifically Jim Harbaugh and Hue Jackson, on Wednesday. Per the San Jose Mercury News, Harbaugh remains the heavy favorite and he has “signed off” on Baalke as general manager. Barring a last-minute surprise, Harbaugh is expected to be named head coach on Wednesday or Thursday.

  16. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Wow. As usual, NoFear, you can’t rebut my argument, so resort to calling me a plagairist. You say nothing in your posts and proclaim them original.

Again, NoFear, do you think Carolina should pass on drafting Luck? Come on, skippy, say something that actually is more than a milquetoast semi-non-endoresement of Luck. Instead of your usual condescending claptrap that merely plants you forever straddling the fence.
