The 49ers didn’t just lose a game Sunday. Oh no. Their loss to the Chiefs was so epic that they also lost an entire fan base. It is hard to imagine even one fan left on planet earth who still believes in this team — and this Head Coach.
There is that sense of betrayal one feels after discovering one has been conned. And Mike Singletary has conned most of us, from Jed York down to the players and on out to the fans.
Speaking for this fan, last Friday’s column achieved journalistic perfection: 100% FAIL.
It would have been 100% correct if I had the Chiefs and Niners switched in my remarks, such was scope of the myopic self-delusion I had achieved.
I said the 49ers would play it close to the vest in the first half, then pull away for a solid victory in the second half. But it was the Chiefs who played it close, then pulled away in the second half. 100% FAIL.
I said the Chiefs wouldn’t score more than 10 points, but it was the Niners who lived down to that assessment. 100% FAIL.
I said nobody could beat the Niners running the ball, then K.C. ran it right down the Niners’ throat to the tune of 200+ yards. I said Cassel couldn’t pass, then he threw 3 TDs. 100% FAIL.
I suspected a STATEMENT game from the 49ers, but not that the statement delivered would be 49ERS REALLY SUCK. 100% FAIL.
I said my bones were calm and victory assured, but they were not calm. They were dead. They were telling me, warning me, “Give it up, pal. This team sucks. You’re backing the wrong pony.” 100% FAIL.
When you find yourself 100% FOS FAIL, it is clearly a time for serious re-evaluation. A who’s that jackass in the mirror moment. The first step is to take off the Rose Colored Glasses I have been wearing religiously for the past four painfully hopeful years. Excuse me for a moment while I place them under my shoe. [crunch, crinkle, shatter, crush, stomp, grind, spit]
Okay. The 49ers did not self-destruct in Kansas City, they were beaten. Clobbered, actually. Whomped and stomped. That is the sad, ugly truth. Beaten in the trenches. Beaten in the secondary. Beaten in the coaching boxes. Beaten in enthusiasm. Beaten running it, beaten passing it, and beaten in who was the toughest sumbitches. The team Singletary prided himself on developing, assured us he would develop — the one he sold to the organization, players, and fan base — was sitting on the opposite sideline Sunday. The Chiefs. On our side was complete doofus ineptitude.
After the game, Singletary vowed to make changes, but then assured the world the one change he wouldn’t make, the one change that every fan of the team can plainly see needs to be made, he won’t change. Jimmy Raye will continue to be the Play Caller. We will continue to have invisible WRs. We will continue to run an offense that does not fool the other team one iota. The Frank Gore offense. In truth, however, there are no changes available that will salvage this season. Changes should have been made before the season started, and any changes now that work will only provoke fans to ask what took so long to make them and why did we piss away a season before making them.
The team was supposed to be better this year, with a year of continuity in Raye’s offensive system. They are not. The rest of the league, however, is. They have figured out Raye and his “system” just as thoroughly as they figured out Shaun Hill’s limitations last year. Fans sitting in their living rooms know what play is coming as soon as the team lines up for the snap.
Singletary’s colossal stubbornness and vanity have brought about his downfall. The players are about to quit on his leadership. He has not hesitated to replace non-performing players in the past. But he now refuses to replace a non-performing OC — the one he chose to lead this team and cannot come to admit he was wrong about. Dead Wrong. 100% FAIL WRONG.
I know not what course Singletary will take, or the players, or other fans, but as for me, the final step in coming to grips with 100% FOS FAIL is to sit down at the table, put on a bib, and start eating that big ugly crow sitting on the table leering at me with its dead and evil eyes. When I am done with this miserable meal, I can assure you that I will not be in a good mood.
Bon apetit, Niner fans. It’s an ugly day in the kingdom.
UPDATE: 8:00 am. Jimmy Raye has been fired. Looks like the team or Jed York gave Singletary a message he could not refuse.
