SF 49ers: R.I.P.

The 49ers didn’t just lose a game Sunday. Oh no. Their loss to the Chiefs was so epic that they also lost an entire fan base. It is hard to imagine even one fan left on planet earth who still believes in this team — and this Head Coach.

There is that sense of betrayal one feels after discovering one has been conned. And Mike Singletary has conned most of us, from Jed York down to the players and on out to the fans.

Speaking for this fan, last Friday’s column achieved journalistic perfection: 100% FAIL.

It would have been 100% correct if I had the Chiefs and Niners switched in my remarks, such was scope of the myopic self-delusion I had achieved.

I said the 49ers would play it close to the vest in the first half, then pull away for a solid victory in the second half. But it was the Chiefs who played it close, then pulled away in the second half. 100% FAIL.

I said the Chiefs wouldn’t score more than 10 points, but it was the Niners who lived down to that assessment. 100% FAIL.

I said nobody could beat the Niners running the ball, then K.C. ran it right down the Niners’ throat to the tune of 200+ yards. I said Cassel couldn’t pass, then he threw 3 TDs. 100% FAIL.

I suspected a STATEMENT game from the 49ers, but not that the statement delivered would be 49ERS REALLY SUCK. 100% FAIL.

I said my bones were calm and victory assured, but they were not calm. They were dead. They were telling me, warning me, “Give it up, pal. This team sucks. You’re backing the wrong pony.” 100% FAIL.

When you find yourself 100% FOS FAIL, it is clearly a time for serious re-evaluation. A who’s that jackass in the mirror moment. The first step is to take off the Rose Colored Glasses I have been wearing religiously for the past four painfully hopeful years. Excuse me for a moment while I place them under my shoe. [crunch, crinkle, shatter, crush, stomp, grind, spit]

Okay. The 49ers did not self-destruct in Kansas City, they were beaten. Clobbered, actually. Whomped and stomped. That is the sad, ugly truth. Beaten in the trenches. Beaten in the secondary. Beaten in the coaching boxes. Beaten in enthusiasm. Beaten running it, beaten passing it, and beaten in who was the toughest sumbitches. The team Singletary prided himself on developing, assured us he would develop — the one he sold to the organization, players, and fan base — was sitting on the opposite sideline Sunday. The Chiefs. On our side was complete doofus ineptitude.

After the game, Singletary vowed to make changes, but then assured the world the one change he wouldn’t make, the one change that every fan of the team can plainly see needs to be made, he won’t change. Jimmy Raye will continue to be the Play Caller. We will continue to have invisible WRs. We will continue to run an offense that does not fool the other team one iota. The Frank Gore offense. In truth, however, there are no changes available that will salvage this season. Changes should have been made before the season started, and any changes now that work will only provoke fans to ask what took so long to make them and why did we piss away a season before making them.

The team was supposed to be better this year, with a year of continuity in Raye’s offensive system. They are not. The rest of the league, however, is. They have figured out Raye and his “system” just as thoroughly as they figured out Shaun Hill’s limitations last year. Fans sitting in their living rooms know what play is coming as soon as the team lines up for the snap.

Singletary’s colossal stubbornness and vanity have brought about his downfall. The players are about to quit on his leadership. He has not hesitated to replace non-performing players in the past. But he now refuses to replace a non-performing OC — the one he chose to lead this team and cannot come to admit he was wrong about. Dead Wrong. 100% FAIL WRONG.

I know not what course Singletary will take, or the players, or other fans, but as for me, the final step in coming to grips with 100% FOS FAIL is to sit down at the table, put on a bib, and start eating that big ugly crow sitting on the table leering at me with its dead and evil eyes. When I am done with this miserable meal, I can assure you that I will not be in a good mood.

Bon apetit, Niner fans. It’s an ugly day in the kingdom.

UPDATE: 8:00 am. Jimmy Raye has been fired. Looks like the team or Jed York gave Singletary a message he could not refuse.

Once again Skeebs you covered it all…i was so disappointed w/ the Seattle game…but i wasnt gonna throw in the towel…after the debacle in KC…ill be drip drying after showers… this was a total ass whipping…even the run defense was horrid…we got flat out.. OUT coached…looks like we’re in a great position for the top pick in the draft!! I mentioned this after Seatle…but now im going to start a campaign…I WANT HARBOUGH the coach from Stanford ( brings back such memories huh)He’s innovative …has some balls and can COACH!! And maybe he can bring that kid Luck with him …..thats what and who we need LUCK

  2. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

I don’t care much for Lowell Cohn, but he made a point yesterday that was dead on. He said the Niners clearly have better offensive players than the Chiefs, but Raye does not know how to use them.

  3. TonyNo Gravatar says:

One more thing i forgot to mention…what was with the time out and pass to the endzone with 2 seconds left down 31 to 3…need that touchdown huh?…so the score looks better…and Morgan hurts his knee…hope he;s ok….but thats the coach….pathetic and embarrising….

  4. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

That was pretty bush. No doubt about it.

  5. TonyNo Gravatar says:

hey Skeebs…its obvious how upset i am…this is my 3rd post….. heres a fun fact …our next 2 game ..Atlanta then Philly…..hummm….can you say Oh crap…and 5….i havent been this negative on my beloved 49ers since the dark days of Erickson and before that the Thomas era before Walsh… 馃檨

  6. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Jimmy Raye just got fired. Wow.

  7. delmardennisNo Gravatar says:

No Bergermeister this morning? I guess the Mayans decided to visit his place before mine. I thought I was going to be in a real bad mood this morning, nope. Still in a huge state of denial. This is no joke, I woke today still thinking it was Sunday. The clock read 6:30 and I turned on the TV to ESPN to watch the Sports Reporters as I always do to kick off my NFL Sunday.

    JIMMY RAYE WAS JUST FIRED!!!

  8. TonyNo Gravatar says:

Probubly went down like this…Uncle Eddie called Jedd ..said go to Sing… tell him to fire Raye…OR ELSE….

  9. BergerNo Gravatar says:

    Good bye Jimmy Raye, FIRED!

  10. BergerNo Gravatar says:

I had just given up on the season. I haven’t even read the above article. All of a sudden, I’m happy and ready to go again! I thnk I’ll read Skeebers article now. Great news!

  11. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

This is one of those cases where an article gets obsoleted before the ink even dries. I should have overslept this morning and posted late.

  12. FranchiseNo Gravatar says:

Look on the bright side – we’re now officially in the running for the Prince Amukamara sweepstakes. Prince Charming will be our shut down corner for the future. We’ll take Christian Ponder at great value in round 3. Draft 2011 boys! Who’s with me?

  13. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Maybe Singletary should have fired himself, too. Scape goat #1 has been heaved under the bus. Who’s next?

  14. TonyNo Gravatar says:

Sing had just said Raye was OC thru the saeson…this came from upstairs … Im serious…i bet Jeds talking (getting advice) from Uncle Eddie……..well if he’s smart he is!!

  15. FranchiseNo Gravatar says:

Prince Amukamara will be a “royal” pain in the ass for opposing wideouts. Beerows can quote me on that one. Ok, I’m done now.

  16. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Skeebs- Your article was perfect timing. Good job!

  17. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

I’m on a 100% FAIL roll here. Hmmm. The dice are hot, ergo I predict the Falcons will slaughter the Niners this coming weekend.

  18. BergerNo Gravatar says:

The one thing that will change the most is I doubt we will run the goal line offense as a base offense anymore. Of course, you know I called it the Sardine Can Offense. I wonder if Sing read the three letters I sent him on the subject?

  19. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

You might just get to see the Pistol offense now, Berger. With Moran Norris on the bench.

  20. BergerNo Gravatar says:

I thinik the Pistol would work n the pros. It is a great offense for the runnng game.

  21. BergerNo Gravatar says:

The play you should show in pictures this week is the one yesterday where Moran Norris got blown up backwards by a LB. It is the signature play of the Jimmy Raye era.

  22. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Whoever the “rat” was, it had to be one of the reasons this happened today. The “rat” might have saved our season for us!

  23. delmardennisNo Gravatar says:

I’m now thinking we may have a good shot at beating Atlanta. Best thing that happened to the 49ers BJGC(Before Jimmy Got Canned) was the Falcons beating the World Champs in OT yesterday. They are going to be in full letdown mode for our game. Who we playing, the 0-3 Niners? Shit, we’ll just show up for that one. I think their attitude coupled with our new attitude gives us a very good shot at an upset.

Think I might make Atlanta a MUST UPSET game.

  24. BergerNo Gravatar says:

I just changed the name of my fantasy football team from the Flying Festers to the Flying Johnsons!

  25. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Dennis- Wait ’till the Falcons get a load of the Flyng Johnsons!

  26. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Takeo Spikes & Michael Lewis are getting benched, too. Fine by me.

  27. delmardennisNo Gravatar says:

This tweet from Adam Schefter: In addition to changing offensive coordinators today, 49ers also planning to bench Takeo Spikes and Mike Lewis.

  28. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Hopefully this moves Mays up one too.

  29. delmardennisNo Gravatar says:

Damn you Skeebers, you beat me to the punch again. Keep it up, and I’ll make my next motto; Skeebers is a MUST BEAT editorial game.

  30. robNo Gravatar says:

OMG THANKYOU THANKYOU SKEEBERS THANKYOU JED YORK THANKYOU JESUS !

  31. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Singletary does not confirm Spikes & Lewis benchings. Didn’t know where that news came from. We’ll see.

  32. Mr FletchNo Gravatar says:

I would like to think that this is Sing finally doing some real reflection on his team and coaching style and philosophy. Like most of you, I suspect the firing came from above. If instead this is Jed taking the reins and being as disgusted as the rest of us, I can be happy with that, woo.

As a practical matter, I doubt this makes too much difference. Maybe the infamously large Raye Playbook will get opened up, but if the only plays to call are still SCO plays, then we haven’t gained much.

  33. BergerNo Gravatar says:

    Fletch- Please, no more SCO!

  34. BergerNo Gravatar says:

The biggest change should be no more Moran Norris as the focal point of the offense.

  35. BergerNo Gravatar says:

On this joyful day for 49er fans we have some sad news. George Blanda has died. He was 83.

  36. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Janikowski’s choke job was more than he could bear.

  37. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

TE Vernon Davis on coaching change: “I strongly believe that it is a good move. It鈥檚 an awesome move.”

Not exactly weeping over Raye’s departure.

  38. delmardennisNo Gravatar says:

Adam Schefter reported on NFL Live that Singletary was told to watch the tapes and re-evaluate. “They” [York(s)] wanted to fire him right after the KC game. “They” wanted to give him the opportunity to make the right (only) decision.

Bottom line: no intervention, we still have Jimmy.

Bottom bottom, line: Singletary is still a goddamn fool.

  39. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Here is my biggest question. Do we have a good QB? I feel we have not put any of our QBs in a position to succeed since Norv Turner was here. I’m hoping Mike Johnson is the play caller we’ve been looking for so we can find out if we have the QB we need.

I know a lot of people have already made up their minds on Alex Smith and maybe they are right. Maybe I’m just slow but I need a better OC than Jimmy Raye to evaluate any QB.

  40. robNo Gravatar says:

i’m guessing we could do better at QB , but we’re ok. for now !
(we still should be looking out for the next big thing at QB imo , if he’s there , grab him !)

  41. robNo Gravatar says:

    oh , and skeebers

    even before we fired raye
(and i thought i’d have to go all V on here and keep repeating my
    replace raye
    replace smashmouth
    mantra …

i still had faith in this team . which has 9-7 soon to be 10-6 talent on it!

i also had faith in this coach who imo with the right OC , can still win a lot of games for us !

  42. bigtimNo Gravatar says:

well a breath of fresh air has arrived in niner land the mummy that was calling the run up the gut has been laid to rest.
not to worry skeebs your insite and wisdom is well appreciated by this poster.
something tells me the influence of Eddie D might be there helping young Jed put the hammer down on the Fail that was the offensive strategy of the niners.
my only hope is Johnson can prop up this broken QB smith for a game or 2 to squeak out a win for the rabid fan base clamoring for Jimmy Raye’s head.
now that its been satisfied the team needs to move forward in a non Fail way.

  43. FranchiseNo Gravatar says:

Johnson could emerge as the niners Brian Schottenheimer. I am cautiously optimistic.
