The exhibition games have concluded and we blognoscenti now have all the evidence we’re going to get about what kind of 49er team to expect in 2014. Ergo, it’s time for the annual crystal ball efforts. Roll the old orb out and swami up to the plate, gentlemen. Predictions for 49er regular season record will be accepted through Friday of this week.

Those optimistic about the 49ers’ chances this year did not enjoy the Labor Day weekend. Aldon Smith was suspended 9 games, Ray McDonald was arrested for spousal abuse, and mean spirited other teams cherry picked a couple of the more decent players released on cut down day.

On the plus side, Alex Boone ended his hold out and reported for duty Monday. This puts the offense in good shape, better than last year’s season opening model, by far. The defense, however, is missing key players and plugging in some newbies. It’s anybody’s guess how well they’ll hold up.

No details have been released regarding the arrest of McDonald, yet he has been tried, convicted, and sent to hell by various members of the media and blogosphere. In addition, demands have been hurled at the 49ers for not immediately cutting McDonald to straighten up the moral compass of the team, which has been deemed wayward of late, racking up a league leading ten arrests over the past three years. Yet nearly half of those arrests — four by my count — belong to one guy — Aldon Smith.

It may well be that McDonald is guilty as hell, and needs to be punished, but goodness, the rush to judgment is more than unseemly. Expecting moral behavior out of a business is also quite naive. It may sound applaudible as a PR tool, but business works precisely like the justice system at large. Rich or elite entities get different and better treatment than poor or marginal types. It’s not fair, but it’s not news, either. To hold the 49ers to a higher standard of values than other teams is myopic and virtually begs for an impeccably mediocre franchise.

That said, jeez, Niner guys, will you cease and desist with the getting arrested shit?

Despite the injuries and distractions 11-5 and we make it to the Super Bowl barring anything else happening to the starters.
Getting Boone back solidifies the Oline and is a big deal.

  2. EarlNo Gravatar says:

    Feeling optimistic today. 12-4.

  3. Mr FletchNo Gravatar says:

In past years, I have been overly pessimistic in my predictions. This year, I’m going the other way, giving the benefit of the doubt to the Niners and trying to overcome my fears. I’ll call for 12-4, with loses to Denver, both Seattle games and New Orleans.

  4. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Forgot to say if we make it to the Super Bowl we might as well win it.

  5. BergerNo Gravatar says:

I’ll go 11-5. That’s pretty good with 4 of our front 7 out and Roman calling plays.

  6. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Wonder how Harbaugh’s brother John feels about Jim’s statement that he won’t keep a player guilty of domestic violence on his team.

  7. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

I’m sure John will ponder and brood over those feelings whilst gazing at his Lombardi Trophy.

Could make for a snippy family reunion dinner, though.

    **Friendly Draft Reminder**

Both leagues draft tonight. Yahoo! at 6 PM, and ESPN at 8:30 PM PDT respectively. Hope to see you there. So if you’re planning on beating up your pregnant girlfriend, get it done early this afternoon and make the draft.

  10. winderNo Gravatar says:

I am so glad I don’t have a pregnant girlfriend, so i will be there

  11. winderNo Gravatar says:

I am so glad I don’t have a pregnant girlfriend, so i will be there.
10-6 We should clean up on the AFC opponents(“F”Peyton) but our division is a tough one.

  12. winderNo Gravatar says:

oh yeah, 10-6 and division champs. I just got a Deja vu on that, hmmm.

  13. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Looking at our Yahoo! draft last year, I got Eddie Lacy in round 9.
That sure the hell ain’t happening again this year.

  14. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

In that same round Bullit selected Matt Schaub. Safe to say the directions of those two careers have gone their separate ways.

  15. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Niners re-sign Kassim Osgood as Dorsey hits the short term IR list.

  16. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Now we know why Wes Welker was so magnanimous on Derby Day when he was handing out Benjamins — he was high on MDMA. It didn’t hurt that Welker was mistakenly overpaid $15,000 that day as well. Probably used the extra cash to buy more ecstasy.

Now Welker can spend the first four NFL weeks sitting at home reading the Daily Racing Form. Welcome to my life.

11-5, Division champs, win NFCCG, win SB.

  18. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

When the scgedule was first revealed, I felt pretty good about 12-4.
Given the subsequent suspensions and Camp related injuries, I’m going to temper it just a tad.

Put me in for 11-5 Skeebs.

  19. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Thanks to those of you who participated in our Yahoo! draft. ESPN draft at the bottom of the hour.

Alex Smith is still in the Green Room and awaiting your call. 馃槢

  20. RTFireflyNo Gravatar says:

Dennis, I’m logged on to my team at ESPN, is that correct? I don’t see anything special about an imminent draft!?

  21. RTFireflyNo Gravatar says:

Figured it out, tad late but OK.

  22. Unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Welker was x-ing? What a dude. Didn’t even know they tested for ecstasy……

  23. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

And then he turns around and calls the drug testing policy flawed?
Not sure where he’s coming from on that one.

    Must’ve been Molly talking.

  24. Unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

    It’s called distraction, Bullitt.

  25. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Pay no attention to the latest 49er behind bars. Take a look at these videos instead . . .

  26. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Right, Chuck. The team managed to throw together two TV shows with season long bookings all in the five days since McDonald was arrested. What a franchise.

  27. BergerNo Gravatar says:

It would be nice if Greg Roman could get a play called in 5 days!

  28. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Oh wait, another TO in the first quarter because the plays did not come in fast enough! Bet on it, we’ll be seeing that.

  29. Bigjon510No Gravatar says:

Let me be the only one to proclaim 13 wins and only 3 loss’s. Kap becomes the best quarterback in the NFL and we average 33 points per game! HAHAHAHAHA!!! No really.

  30. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Hah! I like your way of thinking, Jon. Go big, or go to Candlestick.

I’m going with 11-3-2 because how many people can say 11-5 or 12-4? If 40 people are right, then the question was pretty efffffing easy.

  31. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Do you think McDonald should play on Sunday, Skeeebs?

Or is the company line good enough for you?

  32. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“After tons of questions on McDonald, Harbaugh polled 35 media members: ‘Raise your hand if you’re not in favor of due process.’ None did.”

  33. NoFear49erNo Gravatar says:

Why shouldn’t he play, PC boy? Was he convicted in the court of Chuck already?

  34. RTFireflyNo Gravatar says:

Dang. The entire 49ers media agrees with me? Where oh where did I go wrong???

  35. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Does NoFear dare make a prediction on our 2014 record? Could be risky!

  36. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Because the initial report said she had bruising around her neck, NoFear. Hence the felony charge. Self-induced I’m sure. Half the goddamned team was there at the party. If they can’t determine the correct action from that, then Aaron Hernandez should be playing. He hasn’t been charged yet, right?

Where do you draw the line, NoFear? I’m not behind the heavy-handedness of Jolly Roger, but in the case of a football player strangling a pregnant woman, well, what? The bitch had it coming? Throw in Harbaugh’s zero tolerance statements, and how do they let him play?

If the Niners let him play, there will be a truckload of bad press coming their way. Especially after how they handled the Aldon Smith deal. He was practicing the SAME MORNING he was found trying to bulldoze a tree while passed out behind the wheel.

NoFear’s only prediction was that dick Mike Nolan would be a head coach again. Still waiting on that.

  37. RTFireflyNo Gravatar says:

Then he should be in prison as we speak, right Chuck? Why has the law allowed this convicted felon the freedom to roam the streets?

  38. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

A man should not be punished until he’s had his day in court and due process is served.

And then, if he’s guilty, hang the SOB forthwith. Or in this case, send him to the pokey until his hair is gray.

  39. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“Ray McDonald will not be charged today (9/3, Wed), DA Cindy Hendrickson says. She is reviewing alleged domestic violence case.”

  40. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Whatever. This isn’t about the criminal aspect of the deal.

The Niners will look like the inbred mollycoddlers everyone seems to portray the NFL as. Pop your bitch in the face? 2 games. Strangle the golddigger? Play the next game.

Smoke some grass? 4 games. Or a season.

  41. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

This is about how the 49ers address the issue of domestic abuse and institutional accountability. if Ray Ray plays this Sunday, then Harbaugh comes across as a lying sack of shit. A guy spouting lip service about his policy on domestic violence. He’s the one that said zero tolerance. And he doesn’t see anything here?

Again, this isn’t the criminal side of things. This is about a franchise that has had 10 arrests in the past 3 years. This is about hiring players that aren’t constantly in jail. If he plays, then all bets are off. There’s no standards to be held to. Granted, most people could give a rat’s ass how these guys treat their wives/girlfriends (or boyfriends in Brokeback Lineman’s case) but at some point someone will get killed.

  42. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Hyperventilate much there, Chuck? Lord, give the boy some water.

  43. BergerNo Gravatar says:

    Just win baby!

  44. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Unca should go have lunch with Kawakami so they can tell each other they are holier than the rest of us.

  45. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Willhoite is starting next to PWilly on Sunday.

  46. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

    You have any kids, Skeebs?

    Not likely.

Harbaugh’s being a huge hypocrite to fall back on due process. Sero tolerance, well, except for when its one of my guys. He was all talk whewn his brother was under the gun. As he was when Seattle’s players were getting caught pedding. Now that he;s under the hammer, he’s weaseling out.

  47. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Say that was your daughter who comes home with bruises around her neck. Right Bergs?

I’m sure you’d be all concerned with due process. Besides, Jimbo’s the one touting zero tolerance.

  48. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

    Chuck – True story.

Buddy of mine had his daughter come home, drunk, gash on the back of her head, along with a swollen eye.
He asks what happened, she was too drunk or, opted not to provide a coherent answer.

He immediately assumes the BF was involved, as they were out together.

Goes to the BFs house for an answer.
Kid tells him he’d rather not say.
My buddy roughed him up pretty bad.

Found out later the next day that his daughter and BF were tanked and, decided to have a little sex in the shower.

BF lost his grip on her, she falls backward and whacks the back of her head on the faucet, he lands on top of her and head-butts her on the fall.

Turns out the BF didn’t want to press charges for the a$$ whooping he took, out of respect for the daughter.
Could have easily been an assault charge on my friend.

Always better to get both sides of the story before jumping to conclusions.

  49. robNo Gravatar says:

    football season is on !!!!

  50. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Sure, everyone has a sex-in-the-shower story-gone-wrong tale. They should have just ‘fessed up.

This isn’t that. She called the cops because something was happening. She had visible injuries. Pretty cut and dried. If Harbaugh wants to chastise his bro for welcoming back Ray Rice, then he needs to stop hiding behind due process.

  51. robNo Gravatar says:

    13-3 and superbowl champs

  52. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Interesting. In news of the weird, football edition, Josh Gordon announces he’s going to be a car salesman during his time off from football.

  53. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Skeebs, cops, teachers, lawyers, and the like are routinely suspended during investigations of this type.

You act like this is some sort of witch hunt.

I think its extremely disingenuous of Harbaugh to castigate his brother for the Ray Rice situation, and then hide behind due process when it’s one of his guys.

Don’t like it? Tough shit. Rush to judgement? Right. She calls the cops, and she has bruising around her neck. Must be an accident.

By the way, Crabs missed practice yesterday with a calf injury. Get along little doggie. They’ve been babying the guy for years, and he still can’t get his ass on the field. Hard to get a payday when cooling one’s heels on the sidelines.

Why the hell is Bullitt so quiet? I figured he’d be all over this like white on rice.

  54. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Frank Gore needs 29 yards on Sunday to reach the 10,000 yard mark!

  55. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

    I thought it was 33 . . .

Crabs sez he’ll play Sunday after missing the last 2 practices. He’s just being careful.

Practice. Practice? We’re talking PRACTICE? Not the game, not the GAME. Not the game I sweat and die for. Practice? Practice!

  56. BergerNo Gravatar says:

I thought it was 33 also but I just read an article that said it is 29. I’m going to go with 33 because Pro Football Reference says he has 9967 yards.

  57. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Yeah, I was using PFR as well. They have been known to be wrong.

  58. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Yeah, everywhere has Gore at 9,967. Would love to see him rip off a 35 yard carry first time getting the ball.

He does have 646 playoff yards.

    That’s 10,513 right there.

  59. BergerNo Gravatar says:

I went back and re-read the article that said Gore needed 29 yards. I might be dyslexic, like Gore. The article said he needs 33 yards to become the 29th player gain 10,000 yards.

  60. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

How many of those 29 are in the hall of fame?

  61. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

    22 . . .

  62. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Jerome Bettis leads the non-HOF guys. 6th all time on the rushing list with 13,662 yards.

6 are retired and not eligible yet.

2 (soon to be 3) are playing and not active yet. AP and Steven Jackson.

  63. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

OK, 28 have rushed for over 10,000.

    13 are in the HOF
    7 are not
6 are retired and not eligible yet
2 are active and not eligible yet (soon to be 3)

However, there are 12 rushers who are under the 10,000 mark and are in. Mostly old-timers.

  64. Del Mar Dennis (@DelMarDennis)No Gravatar says:

How come Harbaugh and Roman can’t design a play like that?
