In and Out Burgh

Last week was a fun few days. Twelve new John Lynch 49er recruits, basically replacing 12 old Trent Baalke guys.

None of the new players are likely to push the team into the playoffs next year, and many of them came here because they know either Kyle Shanahan‘s offense or Robert Saleh‘s defense. Smart pickups to help move the team more easily through the new offensive and defensive systems that will be forthcoming.

But no mega woo-woo deals — yet.

And the only one currently in sight is the acquisition of Washington’s QB Kirk Cousins. Either this year via trade or next year in Free Agency.

Looks like Washington owner Dan Snyder is making a big push to regain his title as biggest douche owner in the NFL, a crown worn by 49er owner Jed York the past three years. Both of these guys are more well known for destroying teams than building winners. Every now and then, they do something positive, like York has done this year. Then two years later they let their egos run amok and trash what was good, like Snyder has done this year with Scot McCloughan. It’s almost a carbon copy of the York/Baalke ouster of Jim Harbaugh, only in Washington it’s the team President Bruce Allen playing the Baalke role.

There are still some high profile RBs on the market, going through the process of chagrin that their market value is soft this year. Not sure if Lynch has any interest in these boys, but we’ll see.

For the moment, we appear to have improved somewhatish at WR, TE, ILB, QB, and traded out DL Glenn Dorsey for DL Earl Mitchell. And replaced nobody at FB by adding Kyle Juszczyk, a guy who certainly has the kind of name you would want in a fullback.

Hopefully, there’s more to come in the days leading up to the Draft, where we’ll get a much better idea of how Lynch is going to fare as a GM. It’s one thing to identify talent among players already showing it at an NFL level, and quite another to identify college boys who can make the jump.

“Marcus Cromartie appears to be the only one of the 49er free agents getting any significant interest.”

Yeah, pretty much a testament to the quality of players we had. It isn’t gonna be easy but I truly hope KS and Lynch can make a go of it. One thing I’m pretty sure of is that they will give 100% in trying. If Jed can stay out of the way at least they will have a shot.

“49ers have traded for Baltimore Ravens center Jeremy Zuttah. He’ll compete with Daniel Kilgore.”

Moving down 12 spots in the 6th rd isn’t much of a gamble.

They spent quite a bit of money on the FB position too IMO.
But, I can almost hear it now Skeebs, (if he’s the weapon they expect him to be)….YOOOOUZ! 😀

49ers acquire C Jeremy Zuttah, 6th-rounder from Ravens for 6th-round pick
It was initially reported that the Ravens were going to cut Jeremy Zuttah, but the 49ers called in right away and asked if they could trade for him. Something like this happened earlier in the offseason when the Jaguars and Dolphins orchestrated a trade involving Branden Albert, so this sort of action is definitely not unheard of.

I like this trade for both teams. The 49ers couldn’t count on courting Zuttah, so they’ve opted to slide down 12 spots in the sixth round to make sure they can obtain the 31-year-old. Despite being in his 30s, Zuttah is still performing on a high level. Centers typically play well into their mid-30s, so the 49ers don’t need to worry about any sort of regression. He’ll be a big upgrade over Daniel Kilgore, providing a much-needed boost for San Francisco’s poor offensive line. That all sounds great, especially considering the price tag. Twelve spots in the sixth round is irrelevant.

As for the Ravens, they were going to release Zuttah anyway, so why not obtain something for him? Even if that something is moving up 12 spots in the sixth frame, it’s at least something.

    Grade for 49ers – A
    Grade for Ravens – B

Niners sign Connor Barwin to bolster pass rush.
Sacks were 5, 7 and 14 going back to 2014.
Solid veteran who’s 30 years old and possible younger replacement for Brooks.

So far Lynch/Shanahan turning the team around.

My mistake. Barwin signs with Rams.
The tweet said Barwin signs with 49er’s rival.
Did not see the rival part.
Would have liked to have Barwin on the team but not to be.

Remember Ian Williams. He was released last fall. That is why we are looking for another DT.

Niners signed 29 year old LB Dakoda Watson who played for the Broncos to a 3 year deal.

Jim Harbaugh looks at Crean’s Indiana tenure and says, “much like my situation in San Francisco, the people that are doing the micromanaging … when it comes to building a ball team, what they know could not blow up a small balloon. In my case, an owner and a general manager. In his case, an administration. They are so similar in that way. And he still wins two Big Ten championships outright.

Forever the outlaw. Slow news day for us and this quote gets big air time on the blogs.

I wonder if the new guy works out if the thought might be to move Kilgore to guard. We have a lot of big mauler linemen who may not be good fits in the zone blocking scheme that KS is installing. A guy like Garnett could end up being trade bait on draft day to move up a few slots if the new coaches think he can’t contribute next year.

They are keeping our Oline close to the vest. I haven’t got a clue what they are going to do. I’m not sure if any of them fit the bill. I still wish we could somehow get Mccaffery but that is not gonna happen.

The NY Giants signed ex Niner QB to a 2 year deal.

It wasn’t Kaepernick, Gabbert or Ponder. They chose to give Josh Johnson a shot`

That goes to show you what the rest odf the NFL thinks about last year’s Niner Quaterbacking.

  15. winderNo Gravatar says:

I think he was Harbaugh’s guy from San Diego State. He played ok for us in Pre-season. I guess Ponder is old news too. We knew Gabbert sucked. I still think someone is gonna grab Kap before all is said and done.
