Folklore maintains that March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb, as the last cold blasts of winter give way to the Pat Boone days of spring. Folklore is buttressed, astrologically speaking, by the constellation of Leo the lion crossing the meridian as March begins and the constellation of Aries the ram rising at month’s end.
The NFL football calendar can also be added to the buttrification of the folklore phrase, as March roars in with the beginning of the new NFL year and the start of Free Agency. By the end of March, the Free Agency winds have petered out and the NFL settles down in the pasture to bleat about the upcoming Draft.
On Sunday, Profootball Talk released its first Mock Draft, the first of many to come. It had the 49ers selecting Georgia NT John Jenkins. This probably means we can cross this guy off the list of guys Trent Baalke will draft.
Ted Ginn left the team over the weekend, to the consternation of just about no one. It might be pointed out that there were no fumbled punts during the 49ers recent playoff run, and a couple of decent returns. It might also be pointed out that the team didn’t force many punts in the playoffs, either.
Ginn’s departure brought the total of ex-49ers this year to five, six if you count the locker that’s been cleared out that had Randy Moss’s name tag over it. Not to worry, though, we signed Craig Dahl!
With an extra pick in rounds 2 through 5, the 49ers have about 400 – 500 draft value points to play with. That’s enough to move up to the middle of the first round, or to move up from the bottom to near the top of any other round. It should be enough for Baalke to target a player in the first, or in each of rounds two through five. This won’t guarantee the picks will be worth a crap, but at least the draft will be exciting.
In the meantime, I’m going to snap on my white bucks, gulp down a glass of milk, and be-bop down to the beach with my hoboken baby to write some love letters in the sand. Let’s see, how about “Yo, mama! I got a hard on for you!” Nah. Too subtle. Hmmm…. WWPBD?
The Niners are reportably looking at a QB from West Virginia.
Not the one you’re thinking of in Geno Smith who will go in the first round. But rather, Pat White from the 2009 draft class.
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000153259/article/pat-white-attempting-nfl-comeback-on-49ers-radar
Pat White is short and known more for his running rather than passing. If he is signed that will
be an indicator that the read option might be even more prevalent in the upcoming season.
Anquan Boldin’s Presser
They need to work at extending him from one year to three years
http://www.49ers.com/media-gallery/videos/Anquan-Boldin-This-team-lacks-nothing/83e60e59-569f-468f-a5df-462390a2aae5
I don’t want to see the read option before December. Running it all the time is tempting fate. I’d to see Kaepernick play for 10 or 12 years here in San Francisco, not one and change.
The Niners brought in QB Pat White in as a possible backup QB.
.
I think Harbaugh’s taking this ‘shit into gold’ thing a little too far. This guy was cut from the UFL in Sept of 2011. Be still my heart.
i give white less than a 10% chance of being a 49er come opening day !
I agree with Rob. It’s a lot to ask for the guy to come in and make a quantum leap in his play. His best chance would be to get hurt enough to go on IR all season, without long term disability. He could learn a lot hanging around for a year. Still, it’s a longshot at very best.
Can he return punts?
One Long Shot that might make sense for Harbaugh to work his magic is Denard Robinson.
Steal him late, see if he can make a QB out of him.
hey NJ 49er good to see you in the daytime ! here’s a couple from the last thread ! what do you think of DB david amerson (maybe 3rd rd), and or Phillip Thomas, S, Fresno State (maybe 4th rd.)?
OK so i guess i’m hoping for with our first two picks …
HANKINS amd ELAM !
IMHO both hankins and elam might be there when we pick ! maybe elam with our #1 and hankins with our #2 from KC ! is this just wishfull thinking on my part i wonder , or is there a good chance it might happen ?
do you guys like my choices ?
I’ve liked Amerson from the start but converting him to FS.
Thomas is in the conversation too.
1st Choice at FS is Eric Reid.
I’m going with Earl Wolff over Elam at SS.
Elam is too short for me.
Very si,ilar to Whitner.
I want taller guys.
I could see Reid at FS, TJ McDonald at SS.
Denard Robinson is not an accurate passer. Pat White is fairly accurate. In White’s final year of college he had the most dominant bowl game of any player that year. White is a heck of a player, unfortunately he is only 6′ tall and not a very big body. If we draft a QB in the draft I would look at EJ Manuel if we can get him in the third round or later. He’ll probably go in RD 1 or 2 so forget that. Jeff Tuel is a QB who was fairly decent but had a lot of injuries at Wazzu. We can probably get him in the 6th or 7th round. I’m very OK with seeing what Pat White has to offer.
I haven’t seen all the QBs play but I’ve only seen 3 QBs worth drafting. Geeno Smith(1st sr), EJ Manuel(2nd rd) and Jeff Tuel(6th rd). I don’t care for Barkely(too slow with his decisions), Bray(long wild delivery) or Glennon(not accurate).
Manuel can get a little wild sometimes, but he also gets fairly accurate at times too. He is so athletic and typically makes good decisions, some team might take him in rd 1.
At safety I like Cyprien and Reid with one of our first two picks, since Vaccaro will be long gone. A sleeper in the middle rounds is Williams from Georgia.
Berger
Why not Duke Williams from your Wolfpack?
CYPRIEN has started to pique my interest too ! if elam is gone when our 2nd / 34th pick rolls around …
i’m still holding out hope for
HANKINS and ELAM !
IF neither falls to us
CYPRIEN and JESSE WILLIAMS should merit serious consideration there imho !
HOW ABOUT
Phillip Thomas, S, Fresno State
Height: 6-1. Weight: 208. Arm: 30 1/4. Hand: 9 1/4.
40 Time: 4.65.
Projected Round (2013): 2-4.
3/9/13: Thomas led the nation with eight interceptions in 2012. He had three picks against Colorado, returning two of them for touchdowns. Thomas also recorded 82 tackles, 12 tackles for a loss, four passes broken up and four forced fumbles. He really put himself on the map with his big plays and made up for lost time.
Thomas played well at the Senior Bowl, which helped his draft standing, but he was underwhelming at the Combine. Thomas took a medical redshirt in 2011 and missed the entire season after breaking a leg and dislocating an ankle three days before the first game. He had 64 tackles and three interceptions in 2010.
WITH ON OF OUR 4TH RD PICKS ?
HERE’S another pick for our second pick in rd. three !
Joseph Randle*, RB, Oklahoma State
Height: 6-1. Weight: 200. Hand: 8.68
40 Time: 4.63.
as a side not i think this little tidbit is of interest !
” Randle picked up the slack for Kendall Hunter “
SO now i’m thinkin
1-2
HANKINS/ELAM
WILLIAMS/CYPRIEN
3-4
ranlde
hunter
bullit- Duke Williams is a hard pick for me. The Nevada defense was so bad it was difficult to rate anybody. Williams seemed to be a good safety but I generally stay away from players on defenses that were that bad. This includes TJ McDonald of USC.
rob- I saw the the Phillip Thomas report. His 4.65 is a bit slow. He could be good in the 5th round or later. His stats show some ball hawking ability. His speed says SS. I believe we need a FS. Right now I’d say Culliver is the FS unless a rookie gets picked very high or we land a FA.
Berger
Duke Williams would seem to be a solid 3rd day pick.
bullit- Probably. He did make a lot of plays but he allowed many too. The problem with Nevada’s defense was no pass rush and they could not stop the run. It put undue pressure on the DBs. But having said that, they gave up a few long passes at the end of a few games to lose at the end. The safety has to guard against a big play from a long pass at crunch time. I don’t have a problem with Williams at a 6th or 7th round but I might instead take a tall corner and convert him for better coverage skills.
Berger
I’m beginning to think they tale Johnathan Banks CB with the KC pick #32 and convert him to a FS.
His 40 time is in high 4.5 range but he can tackle and cover.
If Tyrann Mathieu is there in the 3rd rd I’d take him to track the quick slot guys like Cruz, Harvin, Amendola, Welker and Tavon Austin.
If he can stay focused and clean he’s the perfect corner for that.
Rogers was getting torched. Mathieu also can return punts.
Looks like Mathieu will be there in 3rd round.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/03/26/tyrann-mathieu-looking-like-a-third-or-fourth-round-pick/
If I’m Baalke I roll the dice on Mathieu and Lattimore in the 3rd round. Well worth the gamble for a RB and you don’t need him until 2014 so he can rehab on the PUP list.
Kyle Williams is up and running again. Our starting PR guy?
Yup. If he’s fully healthy. He should be what Ginn was for the past couple years. 3rd WR/PR. The difference being KW has good hands and isn’t a huge liability catching the ball.
BULLIT interesting idea ! take a CB to convert into FS ! that’s something i hadn’t considered !
i agree with you about lattimore ! good thinking , we can wait and bring him along slowly ! maybe we hit paydirt again like we did with gore ! i’m not sure if we will or not , i know scott m. liked to take a player with an injury history in a later round ! not too sure if baalke was all on board with that !
BERGER as much as FS is the bigger need since we lost goldson , when the season ended a thought whitner might have been our weak link vs. the pass ! i’m still looking for players at both safety spots , and would still look at elam early and thomas ? later on !
BERGER oops what i mean is i would be open to drafting more than one safety ! elam early AND maybe thomas later on !
ONE MORE POINT ! since we have so many picks i think we can afford to take a player we like a little early ! for example if someone looks to go early to mid 4th we could throw out our 3rd (the second to last in rd.3) to get him ! i’m sure baalke has other ideas like a trade up or two , so we’ll see how it goes !
More and more I’m liking Cyprien. I’d be fine at 31 or 34.
unca- I just watched Anthony Adam’s video that you posted. That was great!
With all the picks we have, we can afford a couple or three pure gambles. Lattimore would be a good one in the third. Let him heal for a year and you might have Frank’s successor.
In case you missed the big announcement:

.
Too funny.
FWIW, Seattle’s listening to trade offers for Matt Flynn
“Slightly used QB for sale. Couldn’t beat out a rookie midget. $5 or best offer.”
And another 500 hundred Spitwad posts heading into the bathroom for toilet paper duty.
Seattle would be praying to get a deal like the Niners got for Alex . . .

THIS is a good one from matt m.
http://www.csnbayarea.com/blog/matt-maiocco/asomugha-could-help-defend-third-down-targets
this is the second point maiocco makes , but is big for me !
“That’s what Nnamdi Asomugha, who stands 6-foot-2, could bring to the table for the 49ers. Those who watched him last season in Philadelphia talked about his lack of recovery speed. But what the 49ers needed from their defensive backs in the postseason was the ability to go up and compete for the football. Asomugha is at his best when he gets his hands on receivers at the line of scrimmage in press coverage.”
imho as much as i like t. brown , adding a bigger CB would be just the ticket for us !
HERE’S the 4th and last point maiocco makes here imo is
”
The 49ers’ defense held the opposition to a 33-percent success rate on third downs in the regular season. In three postseason games, the opposition converted on 51.4 percent on third downs. Of course, a lot of credit goes to the quarterbacks they faced: Aaron Rodgers, Matt Ryan and Flacco. But that’s the kind of gauntlet that defenses must face in the postseason. ”
there’s a key point i’m making here !
omg i need a guiness !

rob- Most of the defensive line was dinged up for the play-offs. That had as much to do with the play-off 3rd down conversion rate as anything.
Jerruh with $51K
Maybe he can use that for a new toilet on the Cowpattie Motor Home.
Or….A Silver Plated Revolver to shoot himself with.
Idiot.
AWH CRAP !

i thought we had between 4-6 mil in cap room , but was holding out hope it was more like 6 mil ! how the heck are can we sign nnamdi a. now ! ?
Quite the NFL Executive is he.
Quick!
Extend Romo.
They’re almost there.
WOW ! AWESOME
nothing beats an ice cold guiness draft ! now i need another one !

TRU-DAT !
i remember , quite some time ago you were telling me just how important justin smith was to this defense and therefore our team ! you also were very concerned about what might happen if we lost him to injury for any length of time ! if i’m not mistaken your issue was the need to rotate more guys in on the D-line !
then and now you hit the nail on the head !
SPEAKING OF IT
you were also big on the need to get our plays off in time ! imho that issue might have cost us our 6th superbowl win !
I will always hate the technique of calling two plays in the huddle. It causes multiple incidents of not getting the play off in time each game. Many teams do and I disagree with the practice.
Currently we have the best salary cap position for QBs in the NFL after trading Alex
http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post/_/id/95492/nfl-econ-how-qb-resources-are-allocated
That salary position will be short lived as CK will get a contract extension and another QB will be brought in as a backup or the 3rd QB.
One thing is for certain Colin Kaepernick is not doing a Tony Romo and taking it easy in the off season. He’s working hard.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWpE5jJ_zwk
I believe in matchups and was thinking we need someone like Mathieu to defend the slot receivers because it just doesn’t suit Rogers who is better off outside.
Yesterday Nickell Roby CB improved his 40 time to 4.4 at the U$C Pro Day. If we miss on Mathieu or seem him too risky then Roby might be a good pick around the 4th round.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsLBxb-jJuI
Some of you might find this article about Pat White and the 49ers interesting:
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/03/28/pat-white-would-play-an-important-role-for-49ers/
Did we sign another slow white guy to play in our secondary today? No? Well if we do I’m sure Rob will like ’em. Rob likes everything the Niners do. I wish I could say I have same healthy outlook in all things Niners like Rob. I bet Rob has a healthier outlook in life in general than I do. Hell. That Budweiser can I just tossed into the recycling bin has a better outlook. I also bet that Bud can could play a better safety then Craig Dahl.
Del- Nice to see you are recycling!
DEL
rest assured my healthy outlook depends in large part on a generous and steady supply of oxycodone and a few good drinks to wash it down !
The case against Jerry Jones, part 53: “All 12 players taken by Jones the G.M. in the 2009 draft are now gone. The draft yielded no starters, and only six made it onto the 53-man roster.”
Jerruh is almost in Joe Thomas company there. Almost.
David Akers is visiting the Lions for a tryout trying to unseat 42 year old Jason Hanson.
The NFL loves to recycle.
New post is up.
