Folklore maintains that March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb, as the last cold blasts of winter give way to the Pat Boone days of spring. Folklore is buttressed, astrologically speaking, by the constellation of Leo the lion crossing the meridian as March begins and the constellation of Aries the ram rising at month’s end.
The NFL football calendar can also be added to the buttrification of the folklore phrase, as March roars in with the beginning of the new NFL year and the start of Free Agency. By the end of March, the Free Agency winds have petered out and the NFL settles down in the pasture to bleat about the upcoming Draft.
On Sunday, Profootball Talk released its first Mock Draft, the first of many to come. It had the 49ers selecting Georgia NT John Jenkins. This probably means we can cross this guy off the list of guys Trent Baalke will draft.
Ted Ginn left the team over the weekend, to the consternation of just about no one. It might be pointed out that there were no fumbled punts during the 49ers recent playoff run, and a couple of decent returns. It might also be pointed out that the team didn’t force many punts in the playoffs, either.
Ginn’s departure brought the total of ex-49ers this year to five, six if you count the locker that’s been cleared out that had Randy Moss’s name tag over it. Not to worry, though, we signed Craig Dahl!
With an extra pick in rounds 2 through 5, the 49ers have about 400 – 500 draft value points to play with. That’s enough to move up to the middle of the first round, or to move up from the bottom to near the top of any other round. It should be enough for Baalke to target a player in the first, or in each of rounds two through five. This won’t guarantee the picks will be worth a crap, but at least the draft will be exciting.
In the meantime, I’m going to snap on my white bucks, gulp down a glass of milk, and be-bop down to the beach with my hoboken baby to write some love letters in the sand. Let’s see, how about “Yo, mama! I got a hard on for you!” Nah. Too subtle. Hmmm…. WWPBD?
