Nick Mullens led two fourth quarter drives that gave the 49ers a come from behind victory against the Rams on Sunday afternoon. The win kept the Niners’ thin playoff hopes alive and knocked the Rams out of first place in the NFC West.
It was an easy game to watch since I never expected them to win until they actually did when Robbie Gould booted the winning FG as time expired. Not when they led 7-3 at the half. Not when they led 17-3 in the third quarter. Or 17-6. or 17-13, and certainly not when the Rams took the lead 20-17 to start the fourth quarter.
But the defense, as it had all day in a magnificent effort, forced two fourth quarter punts which allowed Mullens to chip his way down the field to tie the game and then later to win it.
Kerry Hyder picked up two sacks on the day, giving him seven and a half in his come-out-of-nowhere year. I doubt if anybody else on the team even has two.
Deebo Samuel finally returned to action and showed us all what we had missed. His eleven receptions for 133 yards provided most of the Niners’ offense for the day. Not to ask too much, but wouldn’t it be nice if Deebo and Brandon Aiyuk actually suited up on the same day sometime this year?
Believe it or not, but the Niners are only one game behind the Cardinals in the battle for the final playoff spot, with five games left to play, including the season ender against them. The Vikings and Bears are also in this 5-6 bracket, but screw them for the moment. We have dreams to cultivate should we dare.
