Luck of the Draw

It looks like everyone pretty much agrees that, barring any weird shit, the 49ers will once again be contenders this year.

In the NFC, the list of possible contenders is not daunting. There’s the Eagles and Cowboys, Bucs and Saints, Vikings and Packers, and the NFC West. That’s ten teams fighting for the seven available slots. Though it might be overly charitable to include the Rams in this mix.

The teams they’ll have trouble with are the Saints, Cardinals, and (once again) the Seahawks. Maybe the Bucs, if Brady doesn’t get squashed and their defense isn’t near the bottom, like it was last year. At least Brady will finally have to play in a competitive division for the first time in his career.

Of course, this rosy picture depends on one or both first round picks getting their NFL legs as early as possible. DT Javon Kinlaw and WR Brandon Aiyuk. If Kinlaw struggles early, the defense will too, and if Aiyuk struggles, the offense will need the return to health of Trent Taylor and Jalen Hurd or, pinch me if I’m  dreaming, Dante Pettis suddenly springs to life and escapes the notion that he’s a complete and total bust.

All of which makes the early season schedule fairly important. Last year’s first half games were far less challenging than the second half games. The Niners will need that kind of luck again if they want to get out of the gate quickly and avoid playing catch up all year.

We’ll find out later today when the league releases the 2020 schedule.

“Competition Committee Chairman Rich McKay said on SiriusXM NFL Radio that the rule allowing the league office to use replay to review pass interference was passed for one year only, and there is so little support for passing it for another year this year, that no one is even going to bother bringing it to a vote.”

    Per Yahoo Sports

So it’s back to the zebras making calls on the field.

  2. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

PI is so subjective. I don’t think any solution, with or without replay review, is ever going to be completely satisfactory.

    NJ

9/20 and 9.27 are your dates in Meadowlands

  5. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Sept 20 Nick Bosa meet Mecki Becton. Maybe Kerry Hyder can fill in, the entire game.

  6. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Niners open as 7 point favorites against the Cards in game 1

  7. winderNo Gravatar says:

It’s a good thing we got a by on week 11 because we will need it after weeks 7-10.

  8. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

That stretch might not be quite what it used to be, Winder. Both NE and GB are huge question marks this year.

My initial hunch is 11-5ish. A good season, but we’ll have targets on our backs every game, and we’ll come up short a handful of times.

Once we get into the playoffs, it’s wide open as always. Hottest team in late December and January wins out.

  9. winderNo Gravatar says:

Yeah Grump, I am so used to NE being elite that with a new QB we should be in the game no matter what. Don’t know if GB did anything with their OL but if they did we might have a problem with them. I still think we win both of those games. NO will be tough and I feel our division games with be the hardest. In fact I think our division will be a bloodbath and the division winner just might be at 11-5 or even 10-6.

NN came out with RG Larry Warford article. See what happens but he is a FA and KS does not spend much on OG.

One comment said Person was abused in SB 4th Qtr not able to pick up stunts and twists. Warford is good at that and pass pro overall.

Doubt we pick him up. Kittle and Trent Williams contracts probably have priority. ARI has 9 mil cap to use so could land there.

    https://www.ninersnation.com/2020/5/9/21252806/four-questions-with-the-athletics-mark-bullock-on-trent-williams

Above article reveals an annual injury history. Can play through dislocated kneecaps and tough it out until surgery. Need a spot backup. We are in the SB window with little draft capital.

Lucky if the full Trent available next 3 years. Have to take the chance and spend the high picks elsewhere.

  14. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Niner Front Office thinks a lot of Colton McKivitz T/G

Peters refers to Adam Peters who likes McKivitz’s versatility

    From THE ATHLETIC

“Peters said McKivitz earned what the team calls a “gold helmet,” something that only 15 to 20 players in an entire draft class get each year. To get that designation, Peters said, a player has to hit a number of what he called “exemplary” criteria, including his character off the field and his football intelligence. Peters noted that McKivitz played right tackle, left tackle and some guard at West Virginia and that he knew all five positions on the offensive line.

“So if you had to throw them in somewhere he was ready to go,” Peters said. “He’s a really, really bright kid. Despite not being a great athlete, he was very consistent, and he was very productive. And those are things you can win with.”

“There’s not a lot who earn that,” he said of gold-helmet status. “It’s something that you have to really earn, and it’s not something we just hand out.”

  15. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

A hidden gem. Stats watered down from lots of snaps at NT. His coach said Kinlaw was played more as a run stuffer in college. Thanks Carolina for picking Brown and others for passing on him.

    https://ninerswire.usatoday.com/2020/05/09/49ers-javon-kinlaw-college-stats-south-carolina/?utm_source=49ersWebZone&utm_medium=dt&utm_campaign=affref

  16. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

If McKivitz can back up the guards this year and maybe push Laken in a year or two that would be outstanding.

  17. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

I read somewhere that McKivitz lacks functional strength. Does that mean upper body. Is he able to weight lift enough to face Kinlaw type DT’s.

Is Brunskill even able against the better DT’s. Can we fit in Warford and can he do ZBS. Our IOL pass pro is the Achilles heel and nothing was done so far except swapping RG’s.

Maybe time to do trade/restructure and get a real RG that can do pass pro, handle bull rush, and ZBS. Warford is 20 lbs bigger than Brunskill.

  18. winderNo Gravatar says:

Even though we don’t know how our picks are gonna play it seems that our FO has continually puts us in a position to succeed. I have always thought that heart is just as important if not more so at the professional level than skill coming out of college. McKivitz seems like one of those players. Certainly hope so.

  19. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Also from Barrows and THE ATHLETIC about Dre Greenlaw before last year’s draft

“Dre Greenlaw ran an unremarkable 4.73-second 40-yard dash in the run-up to the draft. The 49ers had sent a number of scouts and evaluators to the University of Arkansas the season prior and all of them remarked about how fast Greenlaw was. They knew he was dealing with a hamstring strain when he ran his 40-yard dash and they also had obtained his GPS speed from Arkansas, 21.09 mph, which was the fastest among all the Razorbacks in 2018.

“It’s not often that you see that,” Peters said of 40 times and GPS speeds that are at odds. “But when you do see that, you want to really dig in. And that’s really where you trust the scouts, you trust the scouts’ eyes and the information that they get.”
    ====
Players are wearing a device in their shoulder pads to measure their speed in MPH. Modern technology.

Perhaps McKivitz continues their 5th round gems streak.

Bullit the B2B games here in NJ, along with Frank now playing for the NYJ better be open to us to attend.
I suspect there’s a REAL possibility they could stay here between games too, perhaps working something out with Rutgers or another facility to accommodate the practice sessions between games.

I’m gonna be mighty PISSED if this season gets played in front of empty seats.

  21. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    NJ

Have to see how things go. They are prepared yo slide games into Jan/Feb if there is a late start to the season. Very uncertain at this point.

This is what Lynch told Jennifer Chin
“John Lynch predicts that the #49ers will stay on the east coast between Week 2 vs NYJ and Week 3 vs NYG.

They are already looking at venues to practice at to keep their body clocks on east coast time for their only 10am PT starts of the season.”

  22. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Grant Cohn is an idiot.

    That’s my comment.

  23. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Team cannot afford to pay $30 mil for Trent Williams & Warford
    Priority one is Kittle’s contract.

Cohn wants the Niner’s to follow the Ram’s plan and have a future fire sale.

Last year the Rams signed a bunch of high profile guys like Eric Weddle and Clay Matthews and traded for Cooks. They are all gone along with Gurley, Talib and even Zuerlein.

Niners are built to challenge for Super Bowls for years to come. not one season.

Did I mention that Cohn is an idiot?

  24. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

So how do you really feel about Grant Cohn…

    *Laughing My Ass Off*

Yeah, he’s a schmuck. I trust Lynch and company to juggle the cap a Hell of a lot more than Spawn of Muckraker.

  25. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Good mailbag on cap in Flux and no ZBS ability for Warford.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis says his state is ready, willing and able to welcome any NFL teams that can’t operate in their own states.

Amid talk that California and some other states won’t lift restrictions in time for the NFL season, DeSantis is positioning his state to be the temporary home of those teams. DeSantis said he is reaching out to commissioners of professional sports leagues to let them know it can work.

  27. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Not sure if anyone else on this board has known anyone with COVID19.

I just found out one of my roommates from college has been in the hospital for 30 days with 10 days in the ICU. We are not really in touch and just exchange Christmas cards He is out of the ICU now and doing better. He should be OK but it remains to be seen what kind of damagehas been caused.

You would consider him on the front line as he is the Director of Pharmacy of the hospital he is in.

All I can say is how the phuck could something like this happen?
When you know somebody it really hits home.

  28. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

    SacBee nails the Kinlaw effect,

    https://www.sacbee.com/sports/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/article242688451.html

In Kinlaw, the 49ers are getting a prospect with similar skills to Buckner. Though Kinlaw is roughly 30 pounds heavier and could be more stout against the run than Buckner, who played well below 300 pounds throughout his time with the 49ers despite standing 6-foot-8.

San Francisco last season allowed 106 rushing yards per game, ranking No. 12, largely because they often played with the lead. Opponents averaged 4.4 yards per carry which ranked 21st. If there’s a way offenses might attack the 49ers this year after an offseason of study, it might be with the running game to neutralize their premier pass rush.

  29. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

So if home games played in other states CA may not get any taxes from those 3 teams. The state income taxes much cheaper, in fact TX and NV is zero.

    https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2020/05/07/alternate-venues-for-california-teams-wouldnt-be-hard-to-find/

The shared TV income for each team which is a corporate tax is what CA will fight for.

    Trouble in Seahawks land?

“The MiramarPD said an arrest warrant has been issued for Giants’ CB Deandre Baker and Seahawks’ CB Quinton Dunbar for four counts of Armed Robbery with a Firearm and four counts of Aggravated Assault with a Firearm. Incident occurred May 13.”

You commit that many robberies means you like that crap. He’ll have a lot of like minded people with him where he’s going. He is pretty insignificant as things go anyway. As long as Wilson is playing at his high level they will be a force to deal with.

  33. winderNo Gravatar says:

Read a little more on what actually happened with those robberies. I don’t get how either of the robbers figured to get away with it. Kinda like burglarizing a house and leaving your wallet behind. Anyway, there goes a couple more morons.

  34. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

It seems that the “party” was typical in that everyone hated cops and would not snitch. Basically the types of people that would do their own policing, which includes identifying and handling snitches.

Cops avoid these cases where all witnesses are bad dudes and a waste of police effort. In this case some reliable witnesses convinced the cops they were reliable and would take precautions to keep themselves alive for a trial.

Niners might be looking for new training facility,

Goodell says teams can open their training facilities 5/19, this coming Thursday.

Remember when the Niners trained at Goleta near Santa Barbara?

Everyone knows of Rocklin. I wonder if it’s an aotion because it is out of the wat. If not they might have to go out of state.

  36. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Baker was a first round pick by the Giants and Dunbar was just traded for a 5th rd pick by the Seahags.

The fact that they are fugitives on the run means their NFL careers are over. Way to piss away your careers.
