OTAs continue this week, I think. And seven more weeks until Training Camp opens. So it’s probably as good a time as any for the annual farting column.
Just kidding. We could do the annual mocking the Raiders column, but that franchise has sunk so low it would be like kicking a cripple. You see Reggie McKenzie, Mark Davis, and Dennis Allen standing there and it looks like three used car salesmen on a slow day.
Excuse me for a second. [brrrrrrrrrrrrit!!!]
Some people think life should be run like a business, and some think it should be run like a religion. The NFL uses both models. Teams treat their players like disposable commodities and expect their FANatics to foot the bill like religious zealots. It’s quite a racket.
Of course, the team owners are supposed to field a winner to appease their zealots. Failure to do so results in the zealotry turning ugly, or worse, passive.
The 49ers have built a winning team that has yet to win it all. There’s a restless energy in the air. Watching Seattle march by us last year was not a good feeling.
The team has relied on defense and a running game to provide a consistent winner. But not a championship. The defense may slip a little this year, but even if it remains at a high level, the offense needs to improve. It needs to become scary. One more year of ground and pound and cliff hanger endings will not make for a happy fan base.
This will be Jim Harbaugh’s fourth year as the head coach. He’s made the team a winner. This year, he has to make it a champion.
