Nail Biting Yawner

The last time the 49ers played the Tennessee Titans, RB Chris Johnson was chugging along toward a 2,000 yard season and Vince Young was the QB. They came to Candlestick with a 1-6 record and beat us 34-27. Each team went on to an 8-8 season. Then the Titans went south and the 49ers went north, geographically representing downward and upward NFL franchise fortunes.

The Titans seemed to be on their way back up the ladder this year until Jake Locker got hurt right as the schedule fed them Kansas City, Seattle, and now the 49ers. That’s a tough three game stretch for anybody.

However, I come not to praise the Titans, but to mention how boring they are. Gritty little team? Who cares? I mean, Titans? What kind of dipwad name is that? Don’t they have any mean ass nasty little animals running around in the woods they could have christened the team with? The Titans ruled the earth long, long ago, before they were overthrown by the Olympians. The head Titan guy was Cronus, who liked to eat his own children. This guy obviously needed some counseling.

Tennessee is going to be eating, all right, but it will be Andrew Luck’s dust in the AFC South for the next ten or twelve years. Just like they ate Peyton Manning’s before that. The team moved to Nashville in 1998, the same year Manning was drafted by the Colts. The Curse began. The folks in Tennessee have all given up their Bible thumping ways as God has surely abandoned them. How else to explain the dumb luck of the Colts’ drunken lout owner Jim Irsay drafting back to back HOF QBs? Sheer, evil chance. Clearly a sign that God has turned his back on you.

Unfortunately, these pesky, blue collar teams are always dangerous to play. They’re too bland to get rah-rahed up about, yet too hard-nosed to give anything less than your best if you want to beat them. Hopefully, our lads aren’t looking past them to the London trip, a routing of the Jaguars, and a week off.

Delanie Walker, Aldon Smith’s totally innocent bystander friend, is now playing for the Titans, which makes one guy on the roster that’s recognizable. He’s now, finally, a starting TE in the NfL and has responded to this promotion by catching 20 passes for 185 yards through six games. About the amount of yardage Vernon Davis racked up in one game against the Cardinals last Sunday.

Still, this game worries me. It’s a trap game. The boys are leaving the area Friday and won’t be back for two weeks. They’ve played weak teams this year, but Arizona and St. Louis are division opponents. Tennessee isn’t even an NFC opponent. It would be easy to blow this game.

Is this Cronus guy in any way related to Spitty?

  2. BergerNo Gravatar says:

I’m not so sure the Titans aren’t better with Fitzgerald over Locker at QB.

  3. BergerNo Gravatar says:

If we just played the Cards, and we are going to London to play the Jags, does that mean this week we are playing the Tits? I say bring on the Tits!

  4. DennisNo Gravatar says:

Actually, Titans is the perfect name for a team from Tennessee. Historically, they were a bunch of really big guys who married their sisters.

  5. winderNo Gravatar says:

Titans. Sounds like a pickup truck, a really big and tough one. It’s all about marketing. I’ve been waiting for Kaepernicking > the Titans. Actually, i’ve been waiting to say anything positive about Kaepernicking. What happened to our running and exciting QB?

  6. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Maybe this is the game that Kap puts the team’s lethargic play to start games behind.
    Slow starts gives your opponent
hope and keeps the crowd in the game when your on the road.
Would be nice to put the Titans away early and rest the guys who are hurting.
It’s tough to win on the road and that makes it a trap game.

  7. winderNo Gravatar says:

Hey dennis – I can’t buy a win in either of our leagues. Just reinforces the fact that I know how to pick-em and that gambling is a bad idea for me.

  8. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Winder, just to be clear, Dennis is the Other Dennis as opposed to the Del Mar variety of Dennis.

  9. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Packers picked Harper off waivers today.
Harbaugh said Manningham is looking good in practice so it looks like he’ll be activated either this week or next barring a setback.
Jake Locker took most of the 1st team reps in the Titan’s practice today at QB.

  10. rtfireflyNo Gravatar says:

    I’m bullish on Arian Foster!

Fantex of SF is preparing an IPO @ $10/share!

20% of Foster’s future football-related earnings (including endorsements) will be the dividend!

Get in on the ground floor!

    Foster Inc., or Foster LLC?

  11. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Dodgers are eating it. Always a pleasant sight.

    RIP Bum Phillips.

He was a player’s coach and he was
genuine and one of a kind.

  15. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Jake Locker is set to return and will start tomorrow. That has to be an emotional lift for the Titans. Whether or not that results in an uptick in production, however, remains to be seen.

  16. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Seems kind of dumb to me. They have a bye next week. Let the man get fully healed instead of pounded by the 9ers and re-injured.

  17. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Titans are one game out of first place in their division.
They are expecting the Colts to lose tomorrow to Denver.
Titans have the mindset they are playing to tie for 1st place so they are going who they think gives them the best chance.

  18. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“49ers have activated rookie DT Quinton Dial from the team’s Reserve/NFI List.”

  19. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Too bad we lost Isaac Sopoaga to the Eagles, we coulda had Dial Soap on our DL.

  20. winderNo Gravatar says:

I want to see some fireworks from our offense tomorrow. This crap has gone on long enough. Can Kappy even throw a screen? Probably not very well yet but that doesn’t really matter since he can keep D’s on their heals just with his feet. It’s time for some Kapernickin.

  21. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Broncos waived WR Tavarres King to make room for Von Miller.
Liked him coming out of UGA.
    Kid has some wheels.
Wonder whether Baalke has any interest?
    Not real tall, 6’0″.

Looks like GB wanted him and Denver blocked the move by bringing him up to the active roster.
Now GB snagged Harper from us.
    Curious…..

A wide receiver who played in a school-record 56 career games for the Unversity of Georgia and finished his tenure with the Bulldogs ranked third all-time in receiving touchdowns (21) and fourth in receiving yards (2,602).
    • Totaled seven 100-yard receiving games for Georgia, including a career-high 205 yards against No. 12 Michigan State in the 2012 Outback Bowl to set a Bulldogs single-game record.
    • Ranked first among starting NCAA FBS wide receivers with a 22.6-yard receiving average (42-950) as a senior offensive captain in 2012.
    • Led his team with 47 catches for 705 yards (15.0 avg.) and eight scores as a junior in 2011 after starting 13-of-14 contests for Georgia.
    • Appeared in four games as a true freshman in 2008 before earning a medical redshirt and returning the next season to capture one of the team’s Newcomer of the Year awards for offense.
    • Named Class AAAA Offensive Player of the Year (Atlanta Journal-Constitution) as a senior at Habersham Central High School in Mt. Airy, Ga., after totaling a state-record 1,632 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns on 99 receptions (16.5 avg.).
    • Selected by the Broncos in the fifth round (161st overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft.

  23. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Considering what we’re getting from Kyle Williams, King is at least a bit taller.

I think there’s going to be some interesting moves coming over the next 2 weeks, leading into the BYE.

  24. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Dallas now projected to be NFL-high $31 million over salary cap next year. One NFL exec called Dallas’ cap situation in 2014 “a train wreck.”

  25. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

They better straighten that mess out. Romo’s in line for a raise next year.

  26. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Quick. Name the only Opening Day starting QB yet to throw an INT?
    A: Jake Locker.

  27. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

They could cut Romo and most of the mess would be solved.

  28. Unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

He hasn’t played in 3 weeks, Dennis. How much would they have to eat, /Skeebs?

  29. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Romo’s contract is $55mil guaranteed over 7 years and a $25mil signing bonus.
Dez Bryant will be a free agent after 2014.
Some have speculated that Crabtree would head to his hometown after his contract is up in 2014.
Cowgurlz will throw what money they have at Dez so that conspiracy theory can be put to rest.

  30. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Bradford just throws a pick six to start the game.
    Channeling his inner Matt Schaub.
Tannehill just threw a pick six for the Fins.
First two scores are by defenses.
Matt Ryan fumbled and returned for six.
    First three scores by d.

  31. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Jest march down the field for a td on the Pats.

  32. bullitNo Gravatar says:

It wasn’t Ryan who fumbled but rather Glennon of the Bucs.
    Dirtybirds scored the six.

  33. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Geno Smith just throws a pick six so that’s four defensive tds and a safety inthe first quarters of the first games today.

  34. winderNo Gravatar says:

Rest assured, the Cowboys will be just who they are for quite awhile. Romo and Dez will be there for years to come. The good fortune for them is that we now have a cap on rookies. It’s not like it used to be.

  35. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

I’ll sub for Rob since he’s absent once again. What day is it? It’s Game Day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And my game day prediction is Titans 27 49ers 24. Niners get nixed in Nashville.

  36. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Uneven 1st Q to say the least.

  37. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Some of the blog experts around here were laughing at the Jets all offseason. Geno’s doing pretty well for them so far.

  38. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Denny
You just keep giving and giving!

  39. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Denny
Kudos! You got the Niner part of the score correct at 24.
Too bad about Locker and the zero turnovers even though he’s been on vacation for half the season.

  40. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Bullit, that’s all I do is give. Ask anyone, I play Santa Claus 365 days a year. I hope RTF didn’t buy any of that bogus Arian Foster stock. He left today’s game with a bad hammy.

  41. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Locker has a hitch in his giddy-up. He’s hurt again. Still hurt more apt.

  42. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Does anyone know why officials always identify a team by its city and not its name. It’s always “San Francisco is not charged with a time out.” They never say the 49ers are not charged with a time out. It has to be some kind of rule.

  43. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Quinton Dial is a very large fellow.

  44. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Did you see who over-ran the pursuit and allowed CJ 2K to go to the house? That’s right. Craig effing Dahl. I despise that worthless POS.

  45. rtfireflyNo Gravatar says:

Alex just bounced a pass off his own helmet and made the reception for -3 yards.

    Heckuva 3rd down play!

  46. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Only one more KC win to a 2nd round pick. 7-0 Chefs are ahead of schedule.

  48. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

I’d be curious to know what Whitner’s pass defense QB rating is this year. It was pretty bad this year. He seems to be having a better year this year, and still playing the run well. I wonder if some of that is Reid playing so well, and not going for highlight plays like his predecessor – and maybe not being in position to help because of it?

  49. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Grump, prior to today’s game, Whitner was ranked the 5th best safety. This according to Pro Football Focus. Reid at No. 22, and our old buddy Dashon is down at No. 39.

  50. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Early line for London: 49ers -17 I don’t care how bad the Jags may be, that’s still a shitload of pts. to be laying in an NFL game.

Hey! I was comment #49 both here and over at Chuck’s blog today. Do I win a prize?

  51. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

I think it has a lot to do with Goldson not being here Grump.

  52. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

    So do I, Chuck.

  53. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Denver has no defense.
Should be an interesting second half.

  54. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

I mean it’s not like Whitner all of a sudden got better. Reid’s got something to do with it.
    .
Tell ya what, Geno Smith looked pretty good today. Color me impressed.

  55. BergerNo Gravatar says:

If Alex threw a pass to himself today I’m guessing that ties him with AJ Jenkins for receptions.

  56. bullitNo Gravatar says:

So week 1 and the Egos looked unstoppable and capable of scoring 80 pts.
Today they barely scored a FG and are down to their 3rd string qb.
    Welcome to the NFL Chip.
Cutler and Bradford also were knocked out today. Dropping like flies inthe NFC.

  57. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Chuck the Blog Experts expected the NYJ to start Sanchez.
That is the reason they’ve been the Circus Act they’ve been.

    Geno is a cool customer.
His problems are simply Rookie problems.
Marty Mornhinweg replacing Schottenheimer is another reason.

Look at the Rams with young Schotty right now.

  58. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

    And, oh by the way…
Game Balls to the 9ers OLine today.
We clearly dominated what I expected was going to be Brawl Ball.

  59. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Chuck what Reid does is what Dashon didn’t do.
Stay disciplined and, be deeper than the Offense.

Dashon was, and still is, all about lining up the big hit.

    I’ve said it for years.
Goldson was a SS playing FS.
His coverage skills are not his strong suit.

  60. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

I also liked the work Roman employed today with the Screen/Edge passing game.

That is an area I’d expect to see Hunter and LMJ excel in.
Frank showed them how it’s done.

    Excellent showing from VMcD too.
Kid will be a weapon for us going forward.

  61. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Kind of hard for LMJ to excel in anything when he’s been a healthy scratch the last two weeks.

  62. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

    Very curious Del.
Not sure what he is, or isn’t doing to succeed.
With his abilities in the open field, PR/KR and screen passes would seem like an ideal fit.

Yes, he’s been scratched but, why?
    Roster numbers or deficiencies?
Probably easy to see the end for Nnamdi now that TBrock is contributing.
We have to fit Mario and Eric Wright in along with Tank in the next 2 weeks too.

  63. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Going to be a VERY interesting BYE week I think.
    Aldon?
He’s being missed less and less since he entered rehab.

Gotta think a Trade is coming if Baalke can line up a suitor willing to part with a Pick.

Again, I’d be talking to NYG, JAX and Chicago.
Each of them have needs and we could offer a player or Picks to obtain better fits for ourselves.

  64. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Not sure how LMJ fits the plans going forward either.
A bucket of praise from Harbaugh isn’t normally a good sign.
We could rest Justin once Tank gets into the mix but, Roster spots have to be tweaked.
I’d consider an NFI for Aldon.
    I think that’s a 6 week label.
That could get Tank in right there.
Nnamdi won’t hurt us on the Cap either, none of his deal is guaranteed.

Here’s where Baalke works the Roster and earns the big $$$.

  65. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Yeah, hiring any of the Schottenheimers seems to be the kiss of death. Turneritis . . . To go old school that would be Nolanitis.

  66. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

And Yeah, that semi-wheel route screen that Kappy hit Gore on was very nice.
    .
KW has really not done much. Continually fair catching inside the 10 is a constant annoyance. Once Manningham comes back, either KW or LMJ may pay he price. Perrish Cox would get the nod.

  67. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The Peyton Express to the Super Bowl derailed and is far from a certainty.
The lack of a defense is problematical.
    Bronco weaknesses have been exposed.

  68. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Harbaugh revealed that Aldon’s mom was at the game even though Smith was in still in rehab.

  69. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

As we’ve discussed Bullit, Peyton doesn’t handle the cold very well either.
It ain’t over by a long shot.
    No guarantees in this game.

  70. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Our Offense may be boring at times but, clock control and Defense has it’s place when passing conditions deteriorate.

  71. winderNo Gravatar says:

I asked for it and I got it, Kaepernickin.

  72. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

And a good day was had by all Winder.
Thought this was an outstanding game for us today.
Truly expected this to be a low scoring, turnover wins it sort of game.

They’re showing signs of creativity on Offense and, ST play was much crisper tooI thought.

If only we could bust a PR for some major yardage.
Too many play it safe fair catches for me.
Perhaps it too will evolve in the coming weeks.
Many new faces on that squad.
Guess it takes some time to gel.
