Perhaps we should return to just UQB. My previous post seems to have Smithed everyone off!

At any rate, Mr. Unnamed was in the news again Tuesday as Jim Harbaugh announced he was creating “separation” from Colin Kaepernick in the camp quarterback competition that more than a few bloggers feel is about as phony as the much ballyhooed search for a GM conducted last January. Whether it is or isn’t phony, it looks like Smith will be anointed the starter any day now.

I should think so. If a six year vet can’t beat out a rookie, then the rational for bringing him back would be seriously torpedoed as well as the decision making processes of our new head coach. That decision has already turned a sizeable section of the blogopolis against Harbaugh, or at least put his skills into the open for debate category.

Harbaugh has thrown open the competition, real or not, at most all of the starting positions on the team. The only starters from last year that seem to be in peril, however, are Chilo Rachal and Parys Haralson. With Michael Crabtree finally out of his walking boot and apparently nearing a return to action, you have to wonder about the fate of Josh Morgan, or Joshua as he prefers to be called these days. The vision of Crabtree and Braylon Edwards as our starting wide outs is pretty tantalizing. That would be the most gifted pair of receivers the 49ers have had in many, many moons.

The team has quietly collected seven former number one draft picks for its starting offense. The Rams kept collecting number one picks during the 90’s and those guys finally put it all together in 1999. It would be pleasant to think that this team might achieve similar results, too — and soon!

The defense now has four former number one picks of its own in the starting lineup, two of them in the secondary. That’s half of the twenty-two starters on the team that were once deemed to have first round talent. The 2005 team, where this whole rebuilding process began, didn’t have any that I can recall. Maybe I just don’t want to think about how bad that team was and have purged it from my memory.

The upcoming exhibition game against the Raiders is assuming more importance than a second preseason game normally has. After the offensive debacle in New Orleans last week, another ignominious effort Saturday, and against the hated Raiders, would turn the blogorama into a screeching hysteria all next week.

As a point of disclaimer, when I refer to the blogorama and the blogosphere and similar expressions for the internet football community, I am rarely talking about the esteemed citizens who gather on this site. If any of you want to see the difference, just go to the Chronicle blog, or the Sac Bee blog, or Maiocco’s blog, and get a load of the commenters trampling all over each other and bellowing incoherently on those sites. Those guys are the unwashed masses of the blogosphere, and it is them I am referring to. In fact, it is the clogged brain syndrome so prevalently displayed on those sites that has given rise to blogs like this one, where football fans can discuss the team in a somewhat more lucid and friendly environment.

In that spirit, let me just say, “RAIDERS SUCK!!”

Skeebs- Somehow I’ve channeled this feeling that you don’t like the Raiders!

  2. BergerNo Gravatar says:

I have amassed a few 49er memorabilia throughout the years and through jointure, my wife gets all of my 49er stuff after I die.

Me being 140 miles away probabaly helps her sleep too!

You cut me out of your will, Reno?
    .
What happens this weekend is this. A Smith plays well. The Niners win easily, and all the “Smith has turned the corner” talk starts anew.
    .
Same old story. Same old song and dance, my friends . . .

  6. Unca ChuckNo Gravatar says:

Speaking of music, Ronnie Montrose is playing at the Boardwalk in Orangevale in a couple weeks. His new lead singer is a good friend from HS. Should be a great show. He said they are working on a lot of the early early stuff.

  7. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Sounds like a no-win deal. If he plays well, same old same old. If he doesn’t, same old same old. May as well focus on the rest of the team and see how they’re doing.

  8. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

    Especially that pesky O-line group.

  9. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Unca- Sorry for the bad news. Jointure is the WOTD. No, it doesn’t have anything to do with pot. Example, if I got my joint stuck in my dentures, would that be jointure?

  10. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

So who got handed the jointure when A*** S**** got hitched? There’s two pussies in that marriage.

  11. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Good to see Michael Crabtree removed from his walking boot. If he ever needs to be refit, I have a boot for him. But I’m not putting it back on his foot…

  12. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

I want to see Three and Out Smith separated – from my team.

  13. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Niners have signed QB Josh McCown.

  14. Philippine FanNo Gravatar says:

Naw Skeebs not perturbed about the UQB post at all. If he stinks he will soon be gone and the new heir apparent anointed by JH. I’m guessing it won’t be Culpepper. Could be a couple years before this is all ancient history. If he finds consistency and the team plays well and wins, well that’s good too. Some have said we need to see progress, consistency in the team play and eventually wins. Agreed. And I think we will bit by bit. Starting with the Raiduhs but it’s going to be a process no escaping that. I’ll be watching the OL to see what improves. Couldn’t be worse!

  15. Philippine FanNo Gravatar says:

    McNown- is he any good?

  16. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

It’s Josh McCown, with a ‘C’ Is he any good. Yeah, about as good as Josh McNown.

Thanks for spell check, Del. I corrected it.

    mcnown = mclown imo !
one guy who IS doing pretty well i hear is colt mccoy ,a QB i liked and thought might be worth a 4th or 5th rd. pick for us ! of course our old pal holmgren swooped in and grabbed him in rd. three to replace quinn and the meltdown guy with AZ , two QB’s picked with high draft picks by the previous regime there !
    if only ๐Ÿ˜‰
anyhoo some other guys who come up on the blogs that would be no real improvement and a waste of time are gradkowski and the same ex QB for the clowns !
    what’s his name ?

  20. robNo Gravatar says:

awww don’t worry about del skeebs , he worries enough for all of us put together !
as for me , i hope like hell braylon edwards is being truthful , and can get back to his winning ways ! he says he wants to be the same as when he was a top WR and quit fooling around ! i think he is almost as talented as chad ” clown ” ochocinco and that if he gets seriuos can be just as effective a WR because of it !

  21. robNo Gravatar says:

I FOR ONE , want to see him perform up to his 1000 yd 85 plus catches talent level again ! harbaugh looks to be an intense enough no nonesense football guy to help him achieve it !
justa thought , i was a little scared that vernon davis might backslide since mike ‘get off my field’ singletary left , but harbaugh’s intensity makes me feel a little better !

sorry , but mcnown is pretty crappy even for 3rd string ! i hope we sign someone else before the season syarts !

I’m glad ‘Three and Out’ is working on those dancing feet. I’d be even happier if he was working on making the right protection calls and the right reads and right decisions off those reads. Guess we can’t have everything, though.

And for those of us who drink and watch the 49ers, it just mostly pisses us the eff off.

  32. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Grumpy- I’ll be drinking Saturday night and watching the 49ers!

  33. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

    So say we all…

  34. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Just realized I forgot Justin Smith is a former first round pick, too. So make that five #1’s on defense and 7 on offense.

  35. Philippine FanNo Gravatar says:

Here’s the drawback of watching the games in the future: while you are all getting comfortable around your beverages it will be 8AM Sunday morning at gametime here. Coffee anyone? And NOT glenn coffee, what a bitter taste

  36. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Thaddeus Gibson was claimed by Steelers and Redskins off waivers.
Redskins got him because they had the poorer record last year.

  37. bigtimNo Gravatar says:

sounds like the young LB’s are really starting to ball.
Thaddeus was a casualty of having enough line backers and him not getting it done the way fangio wanted.
or he wanted a chance to start and asked for his release either way later dude see ya when we play the skins

  38. Philippine FanNo Gravatar says:

Gibson? Who cares? Yep we are over loaded from our last moronic LB head coach jesus XT!

  39. Philippine FanNo Gravatar says:

Yeah he will be good but as you said we had no room- of course that didn’t stop Singletary from stockpiling his kind.

  40. Philippine FanNo Gravatar says:

Guess there are going to be a lot of players who just do not fit the ‘plan’ and vision of the HC and others. No doubt JH will find ‘his guys’

  41. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Last year’s heart throb UDFA LeRoy Vann has hooked up with the Bengals. 5..4..3..2..1.. Go LeRoy, go!!

  42. BergerNo Gravatar says:

I don’t care if we win one pre-season game. I just want to see improvement from week to week. Against Seattle in week one, I can’t say it is a must win, but I do think it is a very important win, even if we have to purloin it.
    .
    This post was for Del.

  43. Philippine FanNo Gravatar says:

Well shit Bergs, Yes exactly! Pre-season? Who gives an FFF? Yeah let’s beat Seattle; think JH has this on his mind?
    ย
I say we purloin it, WtF.
    ย
I’m going to bed but does Del think we will crap against C-hawks? Gonna post tomorra about my last job as a SUICIDE COUNSELOR. But not tonight, I’m too suicidal. hahar

  44. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Berger, the only things that have been purloined have been #11’s ability to read blitzes and his pocket awareness. Wait. In order to have those abilities pilfered from oneself, one must have possessed them in the first place. Scratch that.

Week 1 a very important if not must win? You betcha. For Seattle. Go Hawks!

  45. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Berger, how does it make you feel that the Niners (unsuccessfully) tried to sign your all-time bust, Aaron Maybin? You’re lucky he turned us down and went to play for a winner. We wanted to sign Aaron Maybin? This organization doesn’t have a goddamn clue.

    Let’s–Go–Sea–Hawks!!!

  46. Philippine FanNo Gravatar says:

Damn that ledge looks kinda narrow Del, just relax and step over here; let’s talk, what you say??

  47. Philippine FanNo Gravatar says:

Just type your sincere reply here and I’ll get back to ya in 8 hours, yuk yuk

  48. BergerNo Gravatar says:

I wouldn’t call him my all time bust, that would be JaMarcus Russel and Leaf, but Maybin is up there somewhere high on the list. Does he have any sacks in two years? If he does it is one or two.
    .
Signing somebody in pre-season is OK, unless he has been given guaranteed money, he can always be cut before the real games start.

  49. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

I got a better idea, PF. Just give him a shove and put him out of his misery.

  50. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

That’s not the point, Berger. Sure we could cut him or anyone else for that matter in the preseason. It’s all about the talent evaluation. Trent Baalke is a shitty talent elavuator. He gave up a 4th to move up two spots to draft A. Davis and now Alex Boone (a UDFA) is pushing him at RT? That’s ridiculous. Our 2nd rd pk from that year will get cut in a few weeks. Wonderful talent evaluation going on here.

I’m sure glad Jed held that nation-wide search for a GM.

  51. Unca ChuckNo Gravatar says:

Wow, came up with that all by yourself, v, uh NoFear? Your spelling (as usual) is terrible.
    .
Glad to see you agree with me about the NO game. Gawwd yer a loon.
    .
Dennis, is it you and Ratto that base the entire season on game one? He musta been reading my blog last year. One of them hacks is crowing that . . .

  52. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

So we suck for thinking about signing Maybin, but the Jets are winners for signing him? Boone plays RT in one practice session and Davis is suddenly a bust? Give him a shove, PF.

  53. winderNo Gravatar says:

The Raiders are insignificant, it’s the fans that are a little light in the head. Being a 9er fan I do feel quite a bit of anger and angst but still see some possibility this season will turn out ok.

  54. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Hey, did you guys see the pic of Crabtree’s boot? Players and coaches signed it all in red for him. Maybe they could auction it off for charity or something. I left a “or something” comment.

  56. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Chuck

Maybe I’m the only one that doesn’t know the connection between V and NoFear. You imply they are one and the same.

The funniest thing ever was when V
did his usual cut and paste job
taking an entire article from The San Francisco Sentinel.
The article was hypercritical of the Niners and their management.
What V most likely (although you never know) didn’t know was that
The San Francisco Sentinel is a Jewish Gay website.
That is some funny shit and something that V will never live down. LMAO!!!!

  57. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Lots of guys drafted in the first round as pass rushers that have been busts.
Actually there are simply a lot of first round busts period regardless of position.

  58. Unca ChuckNo Gravatar says:

    Where?

  59. Unca ChuckNo Gravatar says:

Wow, yer more deluded than I originally thought, NoFear.

Either that, or yer trying to be funny.

    Both failures, BTW . . .

    hyuk.

  60. Unca ChuckNo Gravatar says:

As usual, NoFear doth protest too much, and accuses others of what he’s guilty of. It wasn’t that hard to figure out.
    .
Since you know what I’m up to, what are my other screen names?

  61. Unca ChuckNo Gravatar says:

    Right, skippy.

If the V fits, wear it.

  62. Philippine FanNo Gravatar says:

I gotta see this boot yer talkin about Del, hold on… ah okay, love the comment… Let me see if I got this right: You are on that ledge because this football team, who are they? Right, the 49ers, suck big time and for long time too, correct? They have sucked for so long, in so many ways, that this causes you to now live on that ledge, hate them intensely where before you loved them a great deal and furthermore it would give you an even greater deal of pleasure to ram Crabtree’s boot where the sun don’t shine in their fearless leader, what’s his name?
    ย
Wait, where are you going? Don’t jump! I just asked you his name! It’s Alex Smythe, Alex Schmitt, ALEX SMITH!! Got it. Del? Del?

  63. Philippine FanNo Gravatar says:

Skeebs I swear I didn’t push that guy, I swear

  64. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

You guys will miss me the day I do finally jump off my ledge. OK, maybe “miss” isn’t the right word, but you’ll notice that I’m gone. OK, maybe “notice” isn’t the correct word either, but it’ll eventually dawn on you that I’m gone. Ah, screw it. Just go ahead and cheer!

  65. Philippine FanNo Gravatar says:

When we were doing risk assessments on clients at County Mental Health one of the questions we would ask is “What’s Changed?” in the life of this client? This to help figure out a prognosis, good or bad.
    ย
Applied to our team the answer is “A lot”. Starting with a managing owner, front office personnel, removal of inept coaches and bringing in experienced, competent ones. Similarly with players: out with the old, in with the new: QB, WR, defensive backfield, CBs, safeties. A lot has changed. Will it make any difference? Dunno but it’s clear that the same old same old was not going to produce different results. Del may not agree but doesn’t this prove the 49er organization is not completely crazy? As it was for so long? This is why I can have hope, pending clear improvements on the field.

  66. Philippine FanNo Gravatar says:

No way, not cheering Del. Just hang in there, there is hope and I swear we’re gonna see it on the field (in spurts?) this year

  67. Philippine FanNo Gravatar says:
