Open Season

The baseball season began yesterday and today is April Fools Day (don’t say you weren’t warned). For those of us who haven’t died recently, the bleak hours of winter have mercifully passed into history for yet another year. The past two months have been a big ass bummer, to say the least.

The 2011 NFL Draft has finally entered our radar screen and though the top tier players have been pretty much identified, no one seems to know in what order these fellows will be chosen. The ringers are the two QBs — Blaine Gabbert and Cam Newton.

Opinions on these two players vary wildly. Some think both of them will be selected in the top five. Others think neither of them will, or neither of them should. The 49ers are in the enviable position of not having to care too much one way or the other. The Niners pick 7th and, minus the QBs, there are about eight or ten concensus elite players at the top of the draft, all of whom would fill a need for the team — either on the D-line, or OLB pass rusher, or CB. If the QBs get selected in the top six, it just means the 49ers will have more of a choice of excellent fellows at the 7 spot.

This makes the 2011 Draft a comfortable one for 49er fans. The fans in Carolina, Buffalo, and Cincinnati are the ones sweating bullets. The guy they choose might very well be a bust, especially at QB, or no better than the guy the Niners choose at a far more reasonable price and far less magnificent expectations.

Marcell Dareus and Patrick Peterson are the two players most probably coveted by the 49ers, but both are likely to be gone by the time the Niners are on the clock. The only top tier player the 49ers would probably not be interested in is WR A.J. Green, so we should all hope somebody in the top six chooses him.

Von Miller is also likely to be gone, and many believe he is going to be a superstar pass rusher. Our own illuminatus, Mr. Berger, remains skeptical of this fellow, however, and these small speed rushers do indeed have a high bust rate. Though 49er fans would probably be thrilled to draft him, caution dictates a hope that he will be drafted by someone else. And he probably will be.

At this moment, I’m getting some strong Robert Quinn vibes as the 49ers selection. There’s nothing scientific, professional, or otherwise expert justification for this vibe. It’s just a hunch. It arrived in my hunch box yesterday afternoon. I didn’t ask for it, it just, like, appeared out of nowhere. The Mighty Quinn. What’s not to like?

We’re gonna use the 7th overall on a 4-3 DE who didn’t play a single down last year? I don’t think so. No to Robert Quinn. Hell, I’d rather draft Anthony Quinn, sing along with Colin Quinn and watch a Quinn Martin production before I draft Robert Quinn.

Looks like high gravitas at #7.
If Dareus and Petrson are gone at #7 I would go with either Fairly, Jordon or Watt. That only would happen after I unsuccessfully tried to trade down about 4 or 5 spots. I could sill get at least one of these guys there.

    this is awesome !
    1. First round, No. 7 )
    2. Second round, No. 13
    3. Third round, No. 12
    4. Fourth round, No. 11
    5. Fourth round, No. 18 (draft-day trade)
    6. Fifth round, No. 10
    7. Sixth round, No. 9
    8. Sixth round, No. 25 from Seattle for DT Kentwan Balmer)
    9. Seventh round, No. 8
    10. Seventh round, No. 30 from Detroit for QB Shaun Hill)
    11. Seventh round, No. 38 (238th overall, compensatory)
    12. Seventh round, No. 49 (249th overall, compensatory)

with all these picks we can trade up to get anyone we want in any round !
we could even use our 2012 first or second rd pick and some of these to get back into rd. one or early in rd two in this draft ! it would allow us to fill our needs on the d-line and at CB in a draft that’s strong in both !

BERGER , good thinking in you last post , i was thinking the same thing myself .
here’s a Q for you …so far i’ve been loooking at the popular darius or peterson of akamura or fairly debate depending on who falls to us ,

if marcel dareus is gone but peterson and fairly are still there , what do we do ???

skeebs , good one . say what you want about scott m . , but did you ever notice that when a draft rolled around the strongest positions in the draft were the ones we had our biggest needs at ?
remember when he would drive people nuts by looking for all the world like he had no clue as to our team needs , even to the point of being nicknamed ‘mc-clueless’ ? well there WAS a method to his madness . the only downside to this was that he never seemed to take advantage of his success when it was called .

For him to retire, you’d have to first accept he ever actually played *professional* football.
Quick, does rolling right and throwing the ball out of bounds qualify? 😉

One thing about sports, you win if you cheat and if you get caught it is OK if you are from the east.
