49ers 27, Chiefs 17

The 49ers kicked off the Kyle Shanahan era with a dominating preseason win over the Kansas City Chiefs. They had 434 yards of offense and limited the Chiefs to 187.

The Chiefs had only 31 yards rushing, which might be a good sign that last year’s record setting ineptitude will not be repeated this year — or it was just an exhibition game and nothing means anything.

Still, it was nice to finally watch some football again.

With the release of CB Tramaine Brock, Rashard Robinson has been elevated to the designation of being the Niners’ top CB. Last night, he was badly torched in the first quarter. It could be a long year for the pass defense.

Rookie QB CJ Beathard put up 18 points in the fourth quarter, for those keeping track of the battle for the top backup to Brian Hoyer. It’s also possible that no one gives a shit.

The team committed 17 penalties in the game. And that was without the normal offsides efforts of Ahmad Brooks.

Next Saturday, they’ll be home against the Denver Broncos. This will be the first test of whether fans are buying into the new leadership or adopting a wait-and-see approach after three straight years of being burned.

Barkley ran the play-action well and moved the ball down the field. But, his team couldn’t score once inside the red zone. Sound familiar?

I am going with the glass half-full. What impressed me the most was the speed of our team. And, the way CJ rolled both to the left and right with accuracy, been awhile. But in the end it was just the first Pre-season game and it don’t mean squat. If I was Hyde I wouldn’t totally unpack.

Both #1 draft picks looked terrific.
Solomon Thomas played a lot of snaps and was all over the place making plays.

Bowman was reduced to being a statue on a run by Alex Smith. Hope that’s just rust.

  4. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Hard to see much of a future here for Bowman or Hyde.

  5. bullitNo Gravatar says:

For Hyde it’s produce or go elsewhere as he’s in a contract year.

In Bowman’s case he’s overcoming a couple of horrific injuries so he needs to show that he still can physically do it.

Joe Williams and Trent Taylor also looked like promising draft picks.

The key thing to understand about this game was, the starters mostly played one series. The rest of the game was just individual auditions.

    We lost, 7-0.

That’s what the season is far more likely to look like than anything else. A young defense that will have breakdowns and mistakes, and an offense that has a long, long way to go.

We have a very promising crop of rookies. 2017 could go down in history as one of our best draft classes ever, and in the town where Walsh one coached, that’s pretty damned good.

But the larder was damned near bare. It’s going to take time to fix this mess, assuming Jed does not throw more gasoline into the dumpster. We had the least talent on any NFL roster last year and were lucky to win even two games.

The DBs are a total mess and one that will not really get better for a while. The O-line is a mystery. The QB position is a big question mark.

Navorro Bowman has been a great player, but that time is over. At this point, you have to wonder if he can even be a marginal NFL starter. I’m still hoping he can be… but it would not surprise me in the least if the team decides in a couple of weeks that it’s time to move on. It’s coming in any event, by next year at the latest.

I expect the team to get better as the year goes on, but that will probably not show up much in the win column. Like Walsh’s first year, first you have to stop the bleeding; stop being flat out embarrassed every single week.

It’s going to be a long road back to being even mediocre.

Grump- I guess that means Nate Davis really wasn’t very good. I don’t expect our win column to be very large this year but after last year just realizing some potential is a step in the right direction. I still think maybe 4 wins( no clue as to where we get em). Any 4th quarter come back is a welcome sight to me even if they are scrubs. The team looked like they were having some fun. I don’t think they did that last year.

    OMG, the Late Great Nate.

And Kory Sheets, the 1st half of August HoFer.

    Good times, those were.

  9. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Though Sheets at least had his moment of glory.

Who would have guessed when he got cut here that he would end up holding the All-time Pro Football record for yards rushing in a championship game? 197 in the Grey Cup (CFL).

  10. winderNo Gravatar says:

Lol. Yeah it’s hard to take stock with the preseason. Hey, I was one who rode the Sheets bandwagon.

  11. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

    As the Grumpster noted:

“Performance of the 49ers starters on Friday vs. KCChiefs
    – Offense-7 plays, 0.4 yards per play
    – Defense-13 plays, 7.7 yards per play

Performance of the 49ers non-starters on Friday vs. KCChiefs
    – Offense-64 plays, 6.8 yards per play
    – Defense-33 plays, 3.0 yards per play”

    Buzzkill, who cares about reality.

  13. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Tramaine Brock visiting Seattle. They need a decent corner opposite Sherman. Carroll will send us a thank you note soon.

  14. winderNo Gravatar says:

I knew it. Seattle just loves doing that to us.

  15. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Seahags-Niners used to be one of the very best rivalries in the NFL especially with all the animosity between Harbaugh and Petey from their college days.

Now it’s just a two games on the schedule that the Niners haven’t been competitive since the NFC Championship Game.

Might be another couple of years before Niners show up or just maybe this team will be overlooked and Seahags will be surprised because this team feels different from the last few years mostly due to the changes at GM and HC.

  16. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Looks like Foster has been named the WILL LB starter. Big surprise.

  17. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Ryan Matthews passes his physical and Egos cut him.

Reason for Hyde to run smarter and not get hurt or he might find himself in the same boat

  18. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“Seahawks have agreed to a one-year deal with CB Tramaine Brock.”

  19. winderNo Gravatar says:

What a surprise. At least he doesn’t have the playbood.

  20. winderNo Gravatar says:

  21. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

The defense only has ten plays, so he wouldn’t have been leaking much anyway.

  22. winderNo Gravatar says:

I guess they don’t want to show what they have.

  23. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Already a trade rumor that might happen and is a win-win for both teams as I think Dial might not make the team

  24. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Remember the old days when many complained about the #1 Fox broadcast team of Joe Buck/Troy Aikman.

No need to worry because week 1 against the Panthers the Fox #6 teams has been assigned and in week #2 against the Seahags the Fox bottom of the barrel teams is assigned.

  25. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

20 snaps for the starters tonight, instead of one measly four and out.

  26. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

And on the other hand, “At least 7 DEN def starters won’t play tonight: Miller, Ray, Wolfe, Crick, Ward, Davis, Marshall.”

    New post is up.
