Uncharted Waters

The Free Agency period seems to have run its course, leaving us with six weeks of mock drafts to grind through. Whizzo.

There are still a few big names out there looking for work. Jay Cutler, Jamaal Charles, Adrian Paterson. And some small names. Colin Kaepernick and 100 other guys closer to being out of the league than signing on with a new team. It will be mildly interesting to see where these entities end up playing next year — if they play at all.

For the moment, it looks like Brian Hoyer will be the QB for the 2017 season, backed up by Matt Barkley. Obviously not a long term solution. We’ll find out during the Draft whether Kyle Shanahan is content to wait for Kirk Cousins to arrive next year or whether Shanahan plans to draft a QB of the future and forget about Cousins.

It appears the 49ers will not be the biggest joke in the NFL this year. The Jets, Browns, and maybe Washington will be slapping it out for that dubious distinction.

What the Niners will be is still mostly a mystery. When Jim Harbaugh took over the team in 2011, we knew all the players and felt the only thing holding them back was a good head coach. Nobody expected them to go 13-3 and come within a late game Kyle Williams melt down of reaching the Super Bowl, but the playoffs were definitely in sight.

This team is different. Half the roster is basically a mystery except to Shanahan and GM John Lynch. In addition, unlike Harbaugh, Shanahan has never been a head coach. We don’t know if he’ll make a successful leap from OC to HC. And we don’t have any idea what a successful year for these unknowns would be. 4-12? 6-10? 8-8? Many of us don’t even know if we’ll give a shit one way or the other. Can a poisoned fan base be revived?

All of which makes this season the biggest head scratcher of the bloggin’ man era.

Pretty sure that we won’t totally suck. Other than that?

Most mocks are trending to the Niners picking fast riser local kid, Solomon Thomas DE from Stanford as the second pick.
That would be the 3rd defensive lineman in a row the Niners have picked in the last 3 years with their first pick.

The thinking is Thomas compares favorably to DL Aaron Donald or Michael Bennett. Also it has been said that if this pick happens they might shop Armstead who is described as the square peg for a round hole. I don’t see them getting more than a 2nd round pick for Armstead.

This is five weeks before the draft and counting

I think the upcoming season will be far from boring.

The team has a new energy that was missing after Harbaugh was dismissed. Tomsula and his coaching staff were very underwhelming
and the losses in elite personnel were hard to overcome.

Then the coaching change took place with Kelly but he just went through the motions with mediocre personnel and Ballke did little to improve the team just sitting on the cap money.
The expectation was to lose every week and it came to pass on 14 occasions.

In 2018 they will either get Cousins in FA or draft a franchise QB, so there is much to hope for.

Even if the roster is better, expect it to take time to gain the cohesion playing together that a not-sucking team needs. Shanahan II might surprise us, but the smart bet is for another year of suckage before things get better. And then?

Well, then, Jed York is still the Dweeb-in-Chief of this outfit. He will loom like a dark and clueless shadow over everything that happens, threatening at any moment to undo any progress and hurl us back to Dysfunction Junction.

Me, I’m still praying for a plane crash.

    One point about Mitchell Trubisky.
He’s been only a one year starter and the QB that he couldn’t beat out in 2015 was one Marquise Williams.

That is why I would not use the #2 pick on him. Taking him at #2
    might be Alex Smith 2.0

Wait until 4th round and pick up a Davis webb.

Da Bears are signing Mark Sanchez shunning Colin Kaepernick.

Seems like Kap is radioactive and no team wants the baggage that he brings with him.

Choosing Sanchez over Kap is humiliating for the latter. Proves that sticking to football and keeping politics out off the field is best for one’s career.

  7. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Sanchez was signed to be a backup. Kap isn’t suitable as a backup and he’s not good enough to start. The fact he’s a toxic douche doesn’t help, but he’s always been a douche, so if he was any good, somebody would have signed him.

  8. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Now with Kap gone will Reid and Harold continue to “take a knee”?

Kap reversing his stance left these two hanging and now they just might look like two sheep.

  9. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Reid has not been the same player since his concussion at the end of his rookie year. The 49ers might be about to look at replacing him anyway.

  10. winderNo Gravatar says:

I have a feeling we are going we are going Safety with the #2 pick. After Garret I think the best player on the board is Adams. And, i think he would make Reid and Ward look replaceable.

  11. bullitNo Gravatar says:

It might be very well be a Safety Winder but it might be Malik Hooker who has been compared talent wise to Ed Reed and Earl Thomas.

Adams is Kam Chancellor a box safety and Hooker is Earl Thomas the center fielder play maker so it depends which type player you are looking for. Can’t go wrong with either

  12. winderNo Gravatar says:

bullit- I read that about Hooker too. And, yeah i have seen Hooker go before Adams on some mocks. I do agree either one should be sure hit.

  13. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

#2 plus Armstead and/or Aaron Lynch for TENN #5 and #18. Both players are not fits for the new D.

We take Corey Davis or Mike Williams at #5 and the best LEO at #18. TENN needs to rebuild their D and AA and AL are starters for them. We give up two young high potential players but that is the price in this draft.

  14. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Lebeau has the Titan’s D doing the 3-4. Both AA and AL are perfect fits for him.

  15. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Wishful thinking that the Titans would give two #1s for Armstead and Lynch.

Armstaed might get you a 3rd round pick because he’s been hurt in the 2 years he’s been a Pro and Lynch is worth a 4th round pick and most likely a 5th rounder because of his PED suspension

I believe the rest of the league views them as underachievers because both did absolutely nothing last season.

  16. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The truth is the only current player on the roster that can net you a first round pick is Buckner.
MVP might be Bowman but because of age and injuries I can’t see anyone giving more than a 3rd round pick for him.

That is the sorry state of the roster that Baalke left behind.

  17. winderNo Gravatar says:

It is hard to believe that Baalky’s actions left this team in such a talent drain and disarray. I am pretty sure he will be considered the 49ers worst GM ever.

  18. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Baalke or Joe Thomas? Hmm. I’m thinking, I’m thinking…

    No, it’s still Thomas.

    But Baalke definitely is runner-up.

  19. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Terry Donahue ought to get a mention.

  20. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

    The Las Vegas Raiders.

  21. winderNo Gravatar says:

I agree about Thomas to certain degree. A totally used up OJ for the future of the team. I think he was more stupid than anything else. I think Baalky let his ego get so inflated that his priority was himself instead of the team. Either that or he was really stupid too. Donahue just mailed it in. Just plain lazy.

  22. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Thomas’s drunken tirades against reporters and threatening to take “you all down with me if I go” to the players in the locker room in ’78 put him over the top. Baalke was merely incompetent. Thomas was a psycho. Donahue gets honorable mention for being a lazy SOB.
