Trent Watch

Pretty dead out there in the land of football yappity-yap. The great dead zone of February is upon us.

New HC Chip Kelly probably can’t believe his luck. Hounded out of Philadelphia at the end of the 2015 season, considered unemployable by any other NFL team, and suddenly he’s got the easiest HC gig in the league — following in the footsteps of Jim Tomsula, the worst coach in the league last year, and arguably the worst ever. How can Kelly possibly fail?

No, whatever shortcomings the 2016 49ers have will be laid at the feet of GM Trent Baalke. How flimsy is Baalke’s credibility? A year after helping engineer the ouster of Jim Harbaugh, Baalke now tries to embellish himself by admitting hiring Tomsula was a mistake, but hiring Haubaugh was a big win. Lame doesn’t even get close to describing this sort of tortured, hypocritical self-aggrandizement.

It’s a common perception that Baalke does poorly drafting offensive players, but excels when drafting defensive guys. But is that really the case? Maybe it’s more that he is so dreadful on offense that a few decent players for the defense seems mighty in comparison. Maybe he just isn’t very good at drafting period.

To the extent that Baalke’s rep is connected more to the performance of the defense, it’s fair to assume that hiring Kelly was not his choice. It was Jed York‘s. And with Tom Gamble installed as Senior Personnel Executive and known to have a good relationship with Kelly, it looks like Baalke will finally be on the hot seat as Niner GM.

Yeah skeebs, one can hope the hot seat is turned up really high. I still think he shoulda been fired mid-season last year. And, as far as this years draft goes my interest is kinda peaked but not because of the players we will draft but more of how this team can did it’s way out. I don’t expect much from another Baalke draft.

  2. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Skeebs I gotta wonder who forced the Tomsula hire in the first place?
Seems to me, Jed was the driving force in that scenario.

Why was Baalke spending a marathon recruiting effort on Gase, when Fangio was already in-house, only to have them both ending up as partners in Chicago?

From all the fodder that ensued after the Harbaugh divorce, I’ve gotta think Paraag was the weasel in the hen house.
It’s been reported that he had issues with both Kaep and Harbaugh, as well as meddling in the GM duties.
We’ll see if anything changes now that Paraag has been ‘reassigned’.

  3. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

There’s a direct connection between Paraag and Dr Daddy from the business side of the York involvement.
Jed appears to be the puppet in the Front Office.
    Dysfunction at it’s finest.

Chip is the knee-jerk reaction to finding Instant Offense IMO.
Can’t hurt Baalke in this partnership, if he concedes Offensive input to Chip and, concentrates on his strengths involved with the Defense.
Either way it’s sliced, they need a QB to run it.
With the rhetoric being attached to Kaep’s desire to play elsewhere it still boils down to whether Kaep is in Paraag’s dog house?
The Contract side of that debate is attached directly to Paraag to begin with.
Perhaps Kaep’s Agent feels he can do better elsewhere?

  4. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Suddenly Jed trumpets news that Baalke has been ‘Green Lighted’ to spend money?
Is this something every GM in the League needs permission to do?
Probably applies to the York Business Model, by way of Paraag I’d guess?
    Jed is the Front Man.
Let’s see whether this 1st Pick in April is Chip’s guy, Baalke’s guy or, a Splash guy for media/fan consumption.
None of these QBs are ready to step into NFL level play immediately IMO.
They’d spend top 10 money, at the most expensive position in the game, while he holds a clipboard for a year or 2?
    We’ll see….

Again the Niners have been down this road before when Singletary
hired Mike Martz. Shotgun wedding and it lasted less than a year.
The style of offense just didn’t mesh with the head coach and more importantly the front office.

Just a reminder of what happened

Let’s see what version of Chip Kelly the Niners get.
According to the article Scotty despite some improvement in the offense wasn’t on board either with Martz and his offense.

  6. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Also the story that Kap stole Aldon’s girlfriend causing a lot of drama in the lock room is verified as this past weekend Kap has gone public with the relationship.
Makes you wonder if Kap still thinks he’s in high school.
Not a good look for a so called leader of the team to be messing with other player’s girlfriends.
Aldon was always in a fragile state and Kap contributed to pushing him over the edge.

  7. bullitNo Gravatar says:

If you recall last Aug Kap was denying that he was seeing Nessa
saying there was no truth to this.
So much for believing anything Kap says. He lied which makes him a liar.
Just like the sham that he was working hard on improving his football skills last offseason. If you’ve been paying attention Kurt Warner has backed off and tried to distance himself from that debacle.

  8. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Wade Phillips fine tuned a ferrari, assembled by Elway. What a FA list they have.

Just like with Alabama RB’s, beware of the cult of the Bronco’S D.

Jed is mega guilty on tampering. Will we see an overpaid Mo Wilkerson or Malik Jackson on our 53.

Denver was the opposite of GB. Half of their starters were FA.

  9. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Jets have done a franchise tag then trade. In 2006 John Abraham went to Falcons for their 1st.

    Tick tick tick …..

  10. winderNo Gravatar says:

The old adage of ‘you get what you pay for’ really doesn’t apply to the Niners. The draft was somewhat setup in this model. However, one has to be able to recognize and evaluate talent correctly for a positive outcome. I’m not gonna hold my breath for another Baalke draft. Finding gold in a pile of dirt doesn’t happen all that often.
bullit- If I remember right it really wasn’t Martz’s fault that his system didn’t produce here, we didn’t have a QB or an OL that was good enough. We did have Gore or it would have even worse. And, I don’t really see where Baalke has hit many home runs on defense either. Aldon had a great rookie year but look what happened after that. And, when Cowboy went down he was adequate at best.

  11. winderNo Gravatar says:

bullit the comment about the defense was directed at NJ. Just so you know.

  12. RTFireflyNo Gravatar says:

I have allowed myself to peek at the football blogs for the first time in a while. I dunno, “8-8, 5-11, they’re both unacceptable” from Jedi when announcing Tomsula’s firing (and defending Harbaugh’s firing) pushed me over the edge. Maybe it was the discussion I had with the satellite installer, a big Cowpuke fan, back in December when he said, “Face it, neither of us is ever going to see our teams win the Super Bowl again.” Not while Jedi’s alive, and he’ll outlive me.

Anyway, this is going to be a mirage desert oasis year. The AFC South AND – AND – the NFC South???? Are you serious????

We not only get Jacksonville and Tennessee, we get New Orleans and Atlanta and a Tampa Bay team who can’t be completely carried by Jameis Winston. We get the Colts and the offensively futile Texans.

Our swing teams are the Cowboys and Bears. I’m telling you folks, it doesn’t get better than this. It just doesn’t.

What Chip Kelly will show up, and will the Niner D all collapse by Game 5 from being on the field 45 minutes per game? The schedule is the creampuffiest of creampuffs, but will Kappy come back strong or did he do himself permanent locker room damage diddling Aldon’s recent ex? Is Kelly going to try to run the read option with him every play? Will the Niners set the all-time record for worst offensive TOP? Inquiring minds want to know.

Oh well, back to the Internet wilderness again. Go Warriors!!!!! 48-4 going on 73-9 and another Ring, baby!

(If the Niners draft a WR #1, as I’ve now seen two early mocks, I’m going to seriously have to go out into the desert and blow up some Jedi/Trent figurines or something. Jerry Rice in his prime would help this team, but not that much. Think about it.)

  13. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bullit this is the meat of my contention with the mess is SF.
From the perceived meddling of Paraag, to the apparent tampering with the Gase/Fangio/Tomsula hiring, along with, the Aldon/Kaep/Nessa drama, where does a ‘game plan’ exist between the GM and HC as to which direction the team is seeking to go?

To me, the problems exist with Dr Daddy and Paraag pulling the strings behind Jed and Baalke.
It’s tough enough to identify talent coming from College to the Pros.
However, if the Whiz Kid (Paraag) is stipulating ‘value’ as it relates to the Contracts attached, it interferes with the common practice of selecting the BPA, regardless of position.
I don’t buy into Drafting for need necessarily, as it often creates a ‘reach’ condition to satisfy a need.

As suggested, a QB at Pick 7 doesn’t look to me like a BPA scenario.
Chip values a precise thrower with the ability to make quick decisions.
That pretty much eliminates Kaep from the conversation IMO.
I’m afraid pressure will be applied to Baalke to select a ‘Flash’ option like Goff just to suggest their commitment to bringing Offense back to the conversation.
Along with the lingering disappointment attached to the last Cal QB they opted to pass on in favor of Alex.

  14. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

IMO, Chip can do well with guys like Prescott or Doughty in this Draft.
Either guy could be had beyond RD3, as it looks right now.
This Draft is much deeper in Defensive talent.
Wasting a Pick at 7, on a QB, is something I hope they don’t consider.

  15. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Winder here’s the Draft history we’ve had in recent years.
There’s plenty of hits and misses associated to Trent, Scot and beyond.
It’s always a crapshoot in this process.
The important criteria in the Cap Era is finding enough depth to retain balance on both sides of the ball without strapping the budget.

  16. bullitNo Gravatar says:

According to NY Post Wilkerson will be franchised at $15.5 mil a year

  17. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

As I expected, Myles Jack won’t do the drills in Indy –

  18. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bullit, Wilkerson will complicate the signing of Fitzpatrick at that number.
Sheldon Richardson could become the odd man out in the budget game too.
Not overly concerned due to the depth at DT this year anyway.
We’ve got money and Picks to make some moves that most teams can’t touch.
Big question hinges on Kaep, and his Contract decision, on April 1.

  19. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

NYJ also have to determine whether ‘Big Snacks’ will be a factor, along with Richardson.
They are officially boxed in with respect to paying everyone they want to retain.

  20. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Bears released LT Jermon Bushrod. ILB Jerod Mayo retired from Patriots.

2021 draft class sucked for most teams. Not for these three.

Colts got Luck, Coby Fleener, Duane Allen, and T Y Hilton. Seahawks and Broncos killed it as well.

IMO we gorge on FA. Jed has to save face. Got competition. Bears need to replace Bushrod, could Boone land there.

What kind of trade bounty can NYJ fetch for Wilkerson after tagged.

  21. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

NYJ has too many holes to fill. They could fight to keep Wilkerson by a release or trade of Mangold or others.

Best solution is to trade Wilkerson. They can keep Snacks and others.

Would Kaepernick waive his injury issues if we traded AD and CK for Mo? Would do it in a heartbeat.

  22. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

    Jaguars 78 million
    Raiders 72 million
    Bears. 58 million
    49ers. 56 million

This is projected cap space. Alex Boone likely picked up by the Bears for LG/LT. Getting rid of Kap and Brooks gives us huge ammo when FA starts.

Jaguars need TE so one of Coby Fleener or Duane Allen could end up there.

Miami and Buffalo well over salary cap of 155 million. Read they will probably tag Olivier Vernon and Cordy Glenn.

  23. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“Free agent TE Garrett Celek and 49ers close to long-term deal.”

Another name for the Draft Watch Bullit –

Regional combines underway … While most of the national attention is on next week’s annual scouting combine, the NFL is holding 5 regional combines over the next few weeks for players not invited to the ‘show’ in Indianapolis. The first regional combine was held last week in Houston with the 4 remaining ones scheduled for February 20th in Arizona, February 27th in Baltimore, March 5th in Minnesota and March 12th in New Orleans. And while most of the players at the regional combines are really just hoping to get a free-agent tryout next summer, Akron OLB Jatavis Brown sent the league a message that just maybe he should have been invited to Indianapolis. Brown, who has been described as a poor man’s Myles Jack, is an odd size at barely 5-11 and 225 pounds, but ran a DB type 4.47 40 at the Houston regional. And lest anyone think Brown is just an athlete, the fact is he was one of the MAC’s most disruptive defensive players last fall when he racked up 116 tackles including 12 sacks and 8 other tackles for loss.

  27. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Another ‘Sleeper’ OLB is Montese Overton from ECAR –

6’3″/221 who reportedly turned in a 40 at school in the 4.3s
    46 games/217 TKls/14 PBUs along with 1705 Sacks

Jatavis Brown was a tackling machine as well –
    48 games/345 TKLs/4 PBUs/1 INT and 18 Sacks

These ‘Tweener’ LBs are becoming very popular in the pass happy NFL.
Guys like Matakevich and Kwiatkoski will find roles as Pros too.

  28. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Almost like adding bigger Safeties to the pass Defense Units.
They might be liabilities against the run but, good tackling along with good speed has it’s value.

  29. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Overton will be at the Combine – Looking forward to seeing him move too –

  30. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Supposedly RG3 is a better fit for Chip’s offense than Kap.
It’s been said many times that Kap is fast once he gains speed, but it takes him a second to accelerate and that’s where a quick dlineman can catch him and bring him down.

The difference between Russell Wilson and Kap is Wilson is quick and elusive in the pocket. RG3 is similar to Wilson and if the price is right $6 mil for a year I’ll take a chance and if RG3 had success with and proves he can run Chip’s offense then I’ll give him a long term deal.

  31. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Why hasn’t Anthony Davis taken himself off the retired list and declared his intentions?
I wonder if Davis just wants attention and just wants to pull the Niner’s chain. It’s not that difficult, either you are retired or you’re not. Waiting until May or June just screws the team even more because it’s after the draft and most good free agents have made their deals.
Baalke should just move on as if Davis retired permanently.

  32. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Still way too early but a consensus mock draft before this coming week’s combine. Joey Bosa would be there at #7

  33. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bullit I’d be shocked to see Bosa slide from the top 5.
Gladly take him if he made it to 7 however.

As for AD, I think Baalke is well aware that his services are pie in the sky at this point too.
Baalke likely sees his Contract as being more valuable in a Trade, than to hang his hat on whether AD is serious about returning.
As stated, the NYJ would be a ‘hometown’ attraction to AD as well.

Much as I’d love to see AD get a crack as Boones’ replacement, a year away, and a new system under Chip, may not play to his strengths?

  34. bullitNo Gravatar says:

I guess I overlooked the choice that Kap made by rejecting the 49er team doctors and Stanford Medical in favor of going out on his own and having surgeries performed by Kap’s chosen doctors in Colorado.
Does not seem like a cooperative move by a QB planning to stay with the team. The fact that Kap waited an additional 5 weeks to disclose he needed surgey on 2 other unreported injuries is disturbing.

Baalke and Kap’s agents are meeting this week at the Combine.
Hopefully this get’s resolved one way or another as a murky QB situation creates more chaos and uncertainty.
I wouldn’t be surprised if in an open and fair QB competition that Kap ends up on the bench.

  35. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Last year Tomsula had a media session at the Combine.
It did not go well as the National media had a look the Jimmy T experience.
This year for the first time ever only Baalke will be speaking for the team. Chip will attend but is not scheduled to address the media.

Too little too late. Baalke blew it last year where Jimmy was the issue. This year Chip can hold his own but is being censored.

  36. winderNo Gravatar says:

bullit- I don’t see where anything that happens at the combine is a big deal. But if Baalke wants center stage then he’s the one with the target on his forehead. Power junkie?
