Through a Glass Darkly

The court ordered resumption of the CBA labor mediation ended Wednesday and will not resume until mid May due to a scheduling conflict in the mediator’s calendar. Judge Jensen must surely have been aware of the mediator’s calendar when she appointed him, so it appears this is the end of the half-hearted effort to reach a settlement before Judge Jensen issues a ruling on the lockout. Which should come any day now.

For fans, this was basically a two week waste of time, further postponing the timetable for getting a new CBA signed. Neither party had any intention of reaching an agreement until the legal issues have been dealt with. After Jensen rules on the lockout, the losing party will appeal to the Appellate Court in Denver. That’s where this affair has been headed all along.

Jensen is expected to rule against the NFL owners and the owners expect to win in Denver. If Jensen rules against the players, they might as well fold their tents and humble on back to the negotiating table. Their core injunctive strategy will have been soundly defeated. If she rules against the owners, it’s off to Denver sometime in late July — about the time Training Camp usually begins.

Meanwhile, the 2011 NFL Schedule has been released. This would normally set off a lot of wild blogosphere speculation about what the 49ers win/loss record will be this year, but the response this year was mostly a shrug. Franchises with stable rosters and coaching staffs are no doubt engaged in this annual prognosticatory hootnholler, but the 49ers are not one of them. This team is in limbo until a Free Agency period commences and a QB can be acquired to lead the team in 2011. A capable NT to replace Abrayo Franklin wouldn’t hurt, either.

One thing is clear about the schedule, though. Any lost regular season games will hurt the Niners and help the Seahawks and Rams. Seattle has two tough opening road games, the Rams one, the Niners none. If those two opening games are wiped out by a lockout, it’s probably a two game swing in the standings against the Niners — the two games Seattle would probably have lost.

49er fans are doubly confused because they don’t even know how good or bad the current team is. Last season at this time, the team was favored to easily win the NFC West. Kerplop. Was the team just overrated or was the coaching just abysmal?

A few of the questions about the team’s roster will be answered addressed beginning next week with the NFL Draft. It’s no secret the Niners need a QB, CB, OLB, and NT. For the first, and perhaps only, time this off season, actual football news will have a three day run and a week or two of furious debate. It’s about time.

All this mumbo jumbo about the lockout/holdout just makes me want to drop a Lasorda off at the lake.
Speaking of Lasorda, how about those Dodgers. Might be time to start calling them The Roadkill. Roadkill is what didn’t quite dodge the trollies.
Just in case anybody doesn’t know, the Dodgers were called the Trolly Dodgers before they were the Dodgers. That was after they were the Superbas and the Brides Maids. Dodger fans must feel like the Jilted today! MLB has stepped in to run the team and is reviewing whether the owners will be able to keep the team.

Obama, the next Lasorda, is here in Reno. The best part of his trip will be when they say he left. How about that 4 dollar gas.

    You read A Scanner Darkly?

    Cool beans . ..

  4. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Didn’t read it or see it, Chuck. Though I see Netflix has it on DVD. Maybe I’ll rent it. After I finish watching 55 episodes of “Trailer Park Boys.” These fellows would make great bloggers.

  5. BergerNo Gravatar says:

I didn’t see it either but I would venture to guess Austin Powers with homunculus Mini Me was a better police show. Just being able to look at Beyonce makes it a better show.

Everyone who has scoffed at the notion that the schedule makers have agendas can cease with the scorn now. Schefter et al are pointing out how carefully prepared this year’s schedule is to account for as much as four missed opening games, three of which can be re-scheduled and the fourth games are all non-division affairs.
The bad news is that this kind of careful planning to save the integrity of the season also implies there’s a strong feeling that games are going to be missed.

Skeebs- It is what it is. I believe the only reason we did not make the play-offs last year is the strategic abilities of our head coach. Obviously some disagree, that is OK, everybody is entitled to their own opinion.
I figured just upgrading their should get us into the play-offs. Unfortunately, the longer the impasse between players and owners continues the less our chance is of accomplishing that target.
I will watch, I will root, and I will get happy and frustrated. Just play some football so I can get emotional about it again.
Making the play-offs this next year will be iffy, but I expect to be a perennial contender soon if the world doesn’t end on 12-21-12!

  8. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Oops- 2nd paragraph, should’ve used ‘there’ instead of ‘their’.

  9. robNo Gravatar says:

don’t forget we have a young team so we’ll be ok in time . imo we just need a few key peices to our puzzle to be a good team again ! we have a good chance to add the missing peices this offseason with such a good draft position (7th) and so many draft picks (12, including two 4th rounders)! we can also add one top free agent this time to help us finish out our starting line-up !

  10. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

The world ended, well, at least the 49er world ended on April 23, 2005.

  11. robNo Gravatar says:

hmmm i wonder if i said ‘good’ enough times there ?!

  12. robNo Gravatar says:

dennis , lol was that when we hired mike nobrain ? i think our world ended the day dr de-yorkian hijacked our team back about 97-ish !

  13. robNo Gravatar says:

players we’ve had at team HQ. …
    Christian Ponder, FSU
    * The 49ers also had private workouts with Nevada’s Colin Kaepernick and Iowa’s Ricky Stanzi.
    and andy dalton

    Prince Amukamara, Nebraska
    Patrick Peterson, LSU
    Aaron Williams, Texas

    Nose tackles:
    Marcell Dareus, Alabama
Nick Fairley, Auburn (likely a DE in 49ers’ scheme)
    Phil Taylor, Baylor

    not a bad group !

how about the news that we’re looking into re-signing alex smith !

  14. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

The longer the lockout lasts, the more likely it is that Smith accepts the Niners’ contract offer. In fact, you could even see him leading team workouts after the draft, which would be tantamount to saying he is prepared to re-up as soon as the CBA gets signed.

  15. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Alex Smith leading team workouts? When’s the last time Alex ever led anything besides a come-from-behind loss. Alex couldn’t even lead a horse to water let alone make him drink. Though he does one helluva job of making me drink.

  16. BergerNo Gravatar says:

rob- What Dennis is talking about is that is the first day of the draft when we drafted Daven Holly(the next day), the CB out of Cincinnati in the 7th round. We tried to put him on the practice squad and he signed elsewhere. We haven’t had a front line CB since. BTW, Holly is still in the league playing CB. He is a FA this year. Played with the Browns last year.

  17. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Just got this from Eric Branch of the Santa Rosa Press Unca Chuck:
Ted Tollner on Alex Smith: I think he鈥檚 real close to becoming a QB that can lead the Niners to a championship.”

  18. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Tollner was our OC back in ’04 when we went 2-14, ranked 30th in offense and avg. 16 pts./game. I’m sure Tollner also thinks that Bar-S has won best dog at the Kansas City Cook-off the last five years running.

  19. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Jesus, I forgot just how retched our 2004 season was. Both our wins came vs the lowly Cards in OT. How pathetic is that? And Ted Tollner was the mastermind of our offense. And Tollner thinks Alex Smith is on the verge of becoming a QB who can lead the 49ers to a championship? Har de har har har.

  20. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Mike McCarthy didn’t do any better in 2005 than Tollner in ’04, and we all know how that turned out.

  21. BergerNo Gravatar says:

I wouldn’t blame 2004 on Tollner. The Donahue salary purge and his terrible drafts had more to do with it than anything else. I felt bad for Erickson that he had Donahue “helping” him.

  22. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Though I peregrinate through the shadow of the valley of losing seasons, I will not fear losing. Harbaugh is with us. His whistle and staff shall cofort us.

  23. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

    Der Bergermeister waxes poetic. Yodalayheehoo!

  24. BergerNo Gravatar says:

How about cofart? we can have a contest! Sounds like the shadow of the valley of death! We shall have no fear!

Hey Rob, have you been in the witness protection program?
Wanted to tell you I’m going to see BCC at small Club here in NJ.
Great venue, very personal atmosphere, no seats, just like you want it, mingle at the stage, and the serve alcohol.
Black Country Communion is gaining some momentum, this show is being sponsored by a local All Rock Radio Station. Gonna be a great night out.

  26. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Damn it NJ, you are making me jealous again.

  27. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Do you like the Jeff Beck cd from last year as much as I do? That might not be possible. I’m paying it now for the 2 or 3 hundreth time.

  28. BergerNo Gravatar says:

I called rob today and his phone # is not working.

  29. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Repo Ed came over tonight for ribs. He wants to start a cooking show with two fat guys, wants to know if I am interested. Fuck him. But on 2nd thought, I am fat, and can cook. Ed was the main stunt man on all the motorcycle stunts from Miami Vice and still has contacts. But the ass hole turned my potatoes into mash today and we had to be separated. He says that shit sells on TV. Stay tuned.

  30. BergerNo Gravatar says:

My friend from NY asked me what draft scenario would get me upset. I told him if Peterson were on the board and we took Mallet. He said “you’d need to take a mallet to your head”, to which I replied, “I’d need to take a mallet to the coaching staff and Baalke”.
If that happened I would think this is all just a joke and the 49ers brass were into some kind of Chinese yin.
Actually it doesn’t matter who is on the board, I think just taking Mallet would get me riled up.

  31. BergerNo Gravatar says:

That was a lot of work for the WOTD.

  32. BergerNo Gravatar says:

BTW- PFT is convinced that Peterson is the top player on our board.

  33. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Peterson is the guy I’ve wanted all off season, but I’m doubting he will be there at #7.

  34. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

On Easter, I’m asking for an early Christmas present — Patrick Peterson.

  35. BergerNo Gravatar says:

With the 14th pick of the 2012 NFL draft, Walter Football has the SF 49ers taking Courtney Upshaw, DE/OLB Alabama.

  36. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

14th pick? That makes us about 7-9 and missing the playoffs once again. That’s the worst possible scenario for this team. I’d rather go 2-14 and get Andrew Luck. Seriously, going 7-9 next year would piss me off to no end. It would be a completely wasted year. I won’t even bother.

  37. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

If you guys get a chance, the Gruden’s QB Camp series running on ESPN featuring this years’ eligible draftee prospects is worth a watch. Just coach and the QBs in his little video room going over all things football and much more. Gruden is a natural in this forum. You can see it in his eyes and hear it in his voice how much he enjoys watching tape with the guys. Hell, he even has stuff on VHS.

  38. Unca ChuckNo Gravatar says:

Don’t watch the movie (A Scanner Darkly). It is filmed in that God-awful cartoonized film like those stupid-ass Charles Schwab commercials.
