The Price of Respect

So long, February. Good riddance. Hello March. You’re a bit windy for my taste, but apropos for the blogosphere, I suppose.

Potential Free Agents are lining up at the NFL trough about now. Some are hoping to cash in big, and some are just hoping to stay in the league for yet another year. And why not? The money’s pretty damn good!

NFL Minimum Salaries:

Rookie — $480,000
1 Year — $555,000
x-2 Years — $630,000
3 Years — $705,000
4-6 Years — $790,000
7-9 Years — $915,000
10+ Years — $1,015,000.

Of course, money isn’t everything. Especially after you’ve made a bunch of it. As we are witnessing in the ongoing saga of Antonio Brown as  he attempts to talk himself out of the league, doing his best to out-T.O. the original T.O.

Apparently, he feels he has been (stop me if you’ve heard this before) disrespected! And with every opening of his yap tool, he is making damn sure that’s exactly what is surely to happen, whether it did before or not.

Pittsburgh, long a model NFL franchise, is sure having trouble pleasing its star players lately. RB Le’Veon Bell sat out all of last year just to get out of Steeler town. It will be interesting to see where these two guys end up and how much money will be associated with acquired respect.

Ex-49er OT Trent Brown also feels disrespected, by the Niners, as he made clear in the week leading up to the Super Bowl. He’s a FA now, and he’ll no doubt say adios to the Patriots and trot off to the highest bidder elsewhere. He’s got his ring and now wants the money. This  is one of the reasons why the Niners traded him last year. They weren’t going to pay him what he thinks he’s worth and neither will the Patriots.

Nick Foles is another guy who gets no respect, not that he’s whining about it publicly. Two seasons of stellar work in Philadelphia, plus out dueling Brady in the 4th quarter of the SB, and still nobody really believes in him.

Not that any of this concerns the 49ers, who don’t have anybody good enough to demand more respect.

Another sleeper that could be around on day 3 Ben Banogu

There are some LBs that could be had on Day 3 also

  2. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

NYJ $104,000,000 and IND have more cap space than us. Do what IND did last year and almost no FA’s. Bidding war should be avoided on a CJ Mosley and aging or Thomas like edge’s.

    Still in rebuild. Patience grasshopper.

  3. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Banogu is in my list Bullit.
Gonna take some time to whittle them down to games played etc.
Raw numbers are in, most pretty impressive too.
I want to see who stayed healthy and whether red flags are a concern.
Sweat had some negative ink but, U can’t recall why.
I could easily see Shanny making a push for WR help since Welker and Austin were added to the Staff.
Gambling with slot 2 has a lot of options attached if Lynch is willing….

  4. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

1 stat I put a lot of value in is the 10yd split.
Sweat crushed it. Long arms and good splits tend to favor the Edge guys.
Who cares about 40s, unless you’re a WR, or a DB, trying to them.

  5. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Agree that 10 yd split is appropriate for lineman and LBs

They should probably have a 25 yd split also.

40 times are for Receivers, running backs and DBs.

  6. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Either a sign of the apocalypse or someone knowing more than they’re letting on to, the price of Josh Rosen jerseys in Phoenix has dropped to $39.99 from $100 earlier today.

  7. bullitNo Gravatar says:

PFF is ranking Jordan Hicks as the best LB in free agency, ahead of CJ Mosley.

If you want a LB in the 3rd or 4th round you might consider Gary Johnson out of Texas. He ran a 4.43 and is sideline to sideline.

Also the U of Washington LB Ben Burr-Kirven was impressive as was Bobby Okereke out of Stanford.

  8. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Baldy on DeFo-QWilliams collapsing the pocket and shoving IOL derriere in QB’s face. Opposing gameplan cannot ever have QB step up in pocket so both edge’s get extreme bloodlust every passing down.

Second pick traded up to get best edge, whether LEO or SAM on base downs. No FA overspend on edge and keeps Thomas active as the opposite edge. Expectations that Omenihu and Polite will be there. AA will have to be traded.

By taking two DL pass rushers leaves the 3rd and 4th for IOL and WR. ILB’s available every year in draft and FA.

We can overspend in FA bidding wars for Mosley or Barr , as well as ET if desired.

  9. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

For the 10 yard split at combine, Aaron Donald 1.63, Fletcher Cox 1.67, and QWilliams 1.69. I like giving the opposing OC a heart attack. Q is 15 lbs heavier than AD also.

If anyone has quibbles about getting poor trade value for AA because of Q forcing him out, remember that both QW and the edge taken with second pick both on rookie contracts and Thomas still on year 3 of his.

This will get the most out of Thomas, especially if he is LEO on base downs. If on other side he is nickel downs only, QWilliams is the big end.

  10. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Solomon Thomas
    Height: 6-2 3/4″
    Weight: 273 lbs.
    Arms: 33″
    40: 4.69
    10: 1.65
    3-cone: 6.95
    Short shuttle: 4.28
    Vert: 35″
    Broad: 126″
    Bench: 30

    Nick Bosa
    Height: 6-3 3/4″
    Weight: 266 lbs.
    Arms: 33″
    40: 4.79
    10: 1.55
    3-cone: 7.1
    Short shuttle: 4.14
    Vert: 33.5″
    Broad: 116″
    Bench: 29

    So what’s in a 10 yard split?

  11. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bullit I’ve got each of those guys on my rough Draft including Winovich from UM and Cameron Smith/Porter Gustin from USC among others.
Great depth and numbers from these guys.
Not going to be easy to whittle this list down.
Want to do some more digging into Ty Summers from TCu also. Kinda slow (4.51) and small (6’1″/241) but, he racked up 317 Tkls from what I’ve found.
Having some issues located a reliable site for games played but, I’ll dig up something.
Jalen Jelks/OR is interesting too, from a stats standpoint.

  12. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Bosa excelled against the best college competition. He has all the technique down and will be a starter week 1. He has a burst and can get around the edge.

Your guy did what against pac 10 schools. He was interior, not an edge rusher. His combine very good. Never reflected in his film from college. His NFL stats mediocre. You tell us why he failed at LEO and edge his rookie year. At least he got 4 sacks. Only 1 sack this year. Blair and AA had better stats than him, with less snaps.

4-3 DL can be coached up in one year. He is still a dud after 2. New DL Coach tasked with figuring out what to do with his underperforming ass. At best he is average and occupies a roster spot that should be making an impact for the team. Instead he is a bit player, part of an ensemble.

I am not a football guy. I also don’t view with homer glasses. Why can he not translate those combine drills with on field results. Against NFL OL seems he is overmatched. Without Aaron Donald burst he ain’t winning with interior pass rush. If he cannot start producing on the edge with pass rush he is just a one contract wonder. Current CBA seems to favor rookies over mediocre 4 year vets. Run stopping DL are a dime a dozen.

You tell us why he fails to get to the QB. If you have access to pressures and QB hits stats then post them. For sacks he sucks donkey dick.

  13. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Talking freak stats – DT Dexter Lawrence/Clemson 1.74 Split at 342LBs ain’t too shabby either.
A bonafide ‘Fat Man in the Middle’ in my book 😀

A few of the early additions to my List –

    Montez Sweat – MSSt – 6’5″/260 – 1.55 Split – 21 Reps
    Ben Banogu – TCU – 6’3″/250 1.56 Split 23 Reps
    Maxx Crosby – EMU – 6’4″/255 – 1.60 Split – 162 Tkls – 20 Sacks
    Jordan Brailford – OSU – 6’2″/252 – 1.62 Split – 22 Reps (135 Tkls/16 Sacks)
    Malik Carney – UNC – 6’2″/251 – 1.68 Split – 25 Reps (176 Tkls/17 Sacks)
    Anthony Nelson – Iowa – 6’7″/271 – 1.65 Split – 18 Reps (119 Tkls/23 Sacks)

  14. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Curious if this guy could be a late RD steal as a potential OG/OC?

    Iosua Opeta – Weber St – 6’4″/301 1.66 Split – 39 Reps

  15. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Short arms (33-1/4″) and crappy 3-cone (8.06) numbers though –

  16. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

By comparison though, his arms aren’t a deal breaker. I’d say his at the higher side of average for the IOL Group.

  17. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

NJ, what are the odds anyone will trade up for #2. Unless ARI goes insane, they take QWilliams for their 3-4. We take Bosa.

Unless NYG trades #6 plus OBJ for #2. Can this be done without us giving them more day 1 or 2 draft picks? If OBJ has 3 or more years on his contract, it could be good without anymore serious draft picks given up.

WR and DB’S more injury prone so I cannot give them more than #2 for OBJ and #6. CHI and Kevin White scares me off big trades for WR or DB.

  18. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bakkentom I’m sensing the OBJ talk is less than 50/50.
As you pointed out, Jimmy is not known for the deep routes, which is something ‘Quise is utilized for.
OBJs Contract is something NYG are hoping to rid themselves of IMO.
He’s a talent of course but, he’s also a diva. Not sure Shanny/Lynch would go there unless other Picks were bountiful.
They are without a 3rd RD Pick but have multiple 4s/5s
    6/37/108 132/142 143 171c
We, on the other hand aren’t doing so well.
    2/36/67/104/176, 212c

Quite possible to rearrange between us/them of course but, I’d ask for more, if it were up to me, (which it ain’t).
I see the slot as something worthy of RG III/Wentz kinda discussions.
    Extras this year, extras next.
NYG are in need of Cap relief and a QB. We need Picks. Easy-peasy.

  19. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

I do hope our Pats connection can play a role in April.
Belichick is loaded with Picks. 7 in the 1st 4 RDs

  20. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

NJ, Pats have 2 comp picks in the 3rd. If we do QWilliams and need to dump either/or or both AA and Thomas would look at those comp picks for trade. Thomas no lower than a 3rd comp. AA in option year so ??? If he had a tradeable contract would do the same if had to dump him.

As far as measuring burst, I read that both jumps and the 10 yard split is the best the combine can tell us about a DL burst in pass rush. If so, why can’t Thomas get to the QB from DT. Maybe he has stiff hips and can’t bend on the outside rush.

  21. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bullit you mentioned Gary Johnson from UT – I have him penciled in as a possible SS due to his size (5’11″/226) and the 4.43/40 –
How is he in coverage? I see no info for INTs etc.
I like his 147 Tkls too, which shows that being done over 2yrs?
Did he play elsewhere? I’m confused on how he gets into the Draft with only 2yrs of stats?

  22. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Longest arms go to Omenihu and Sweat, while Anthony Nelson of Iowa wins the tallest (6’7″) with a better 3-cone (6.95) than either.
Some freaky fuk’n numbers this year.

Nelson played in 37 games and racked up 23 sacks also.
I wonder if he could become an option to Josh Allen?
Allen is impressive in coverage too. Just can’t decide if he’s a better fit in a 3-4 as an OLB or, doing what we’re seeking? My concern with him is the shorter arms by comparison to Sweat and Omenihu.
Allen is certainly a gifted athlete.
As a replacement to Aldon he’d be a slam dunk, but for the scheme change now.

  23. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Another guy to keep on the Mid-RD radar is Jaylon Ferguson.
He’s keeping a low profile among the DE prospect conversations.
Plus, he spent the week in Mobile with Shanny & Co.
Can’t find any meaningful measurables on him either as his Combine stats are all DNP – Did he get excused? Can’t recall.
But, 45 Sacks, and a week with the Staff, should have him clearly vetted by Lynch I’d hope.

  24. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Here’s a guy that would look good learning the ropes from Earl Thomas –

    Darnell Savage – Maryland – 5’11″/198 4.36 182 Tkls/8 Ints – 39.5″ Vert

  25. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    From CBS NFL Insider

“I’ll be keeping a particular eye on the Raiders and Eagles in the Antonio Brown sweepstakes. Much was made of the Titans elsewhere as a potential suitor, but I’m told they have nothing going with the Steelers. The Skins have internal issues about the feasibility of a Brown trade. Owner Dan Snyder is most intrigued by it but others are cautioning against it. The Saints and Seahawks strongly considered the matter internally but don’t appear to be moving forward with it. And the Steelers won’t be cutting Brown to avoid a roster-bonus payment, either.
The more teams I talk to, the more I hear the same thing – people are convinced Kyler Murray is going first overall. Probably to the Cardinals, or maybe via a trade. But this draft is going to be all about him. A few execs I spoke to believe the Cardinals will have a very difficult time getting more than a third-round pick for Josh Rosen should they lock-in on Murray a year after trading up to take Rosen 10th overall.
I would set the odds higher that the Texans tag-and-trade Jadaveon Clowney than I would on the Chiefs making a tag-and-trade deal for Dee Ford.”
Suprising that Rosens value is a third round pick. That’s why it’s pie in the sky to think you can get a high pick for Mullens or Armstead. Other teams know they have leverage and most likely Armstead gets you a pick on day three.

It is reported that Justin Houston might be cut by the Chefs because they can’t find a willing trade partner. If cut loose Houston’s contract demands might be more reasonable than the contract he had with the Chefs as he’s gotten a big chunk in bonus money already.”

Just imagine if Houston signs with the Niners and they also draft Bosa. That would be a devastating pass rush.

  26. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

    What about Justin Houston ?

  28. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

He might get released Rob !!!!!!!

  29. bullitNo Gravatar says:

One of the all time Niner greats has to take a leave due to family matters. Wish him the best and maybe he can join the Niners if the health issues which is the reason he’s stepping away goes favorably.

  30. bullitNo Gravatar says:

If this is true Lynch and the Niners now control the draft board

  31. bullitNo Gravatar says:

I don’t think the Cards have decided yet. It would be very foolish if they did as they would stop getting offers.
Smokescreens and a lot of BS before the draft with nothing certain until the pick is officially announced.

  32. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Barring major impacting injuries it will be a long time our draft position will be this high. Priority should be to upgrade weak position groups via draft. We are fortunate that DL pass rush, WR, and IOL have a quality draft pool to pick from.

Hope we save cap dollars for next year when we have less chance to hit quality picks in draft.

  33. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

I’m not sure even the Tards are dumb enough to take Murray over Bosa and Williams.

  34. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Shanahan and Chris Simms were roommates and teammates at The University of Texas.
Simms has a new podcast and Kyle was his first guest. Simms got Shanahan to let his guard down and you’ll never see Shanahan give another one finger peace sign again. He was very honest on what the team needs are and how they intend to build it.

  35. ROBNo Gravatar says:

The Ravens’ decision to release Eric Weddle on Tuesday added another big name to a pool that was not short on them. Weddle was added to our list of the top 100 free agents at No. 41 in the wake of Tuesday’s transaction and that means 12 safeties are now on that list.

Five of those players — Landon Collins, Earl Thomas, Tyrann Mathieu, Adrian Amos and Lamarcus Joyner — are among the first 17 names on the list. Weddle, Clayton Geathers, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Glover Quin, Kenny Vaccaro, George Iloka and Tre Boston are the others in the top 100.

  36. RobNo Gravatar says:

How about sign Justin Houston as a free agent and draft Williams !

  37. winderNo Gravatar says:

bullit- thanks for that KS link. I am glad we got him.

  38. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Start of FA and trades next week will tell us a lot.

Are PFF scores reliable, at least for fans. What do NFL’ers use, consultants subscription services of some kind maybe. For LB’s PFF gave high scores to Jordan Hicks for coverage, in the 80’S and low 90’s. Barr got between 75 and 80 for all of run defense, pass rush, and pass coverage. Read that CJ Mosley more of a run stopper.

We lack the salary cap of previous years. Probably target no more than 3 impact FA’s instead of covering the myriad holes with 5 or more pickups.

Lots of safeties out there, weddle and Stewart added today. Do we give the new DB and assistant coach a year with Witherspoon, TMoore, Colbert, and other rookies from 2018 and stay away from FA entirely.

We need another good draft. FA’s are expensive. On the other side carrying overdrafted mediocre draft picks damages roster development.

Some advocate carrying AA and Thomas for 2019. If that is also Lynch’s aim then LEO/edge1 at #2 and a FA for SAM/edge2 will show next week.

Giving AA another year has some merit. Body type good for Big End. Is he durable for interior DT work. Tall and only 290 on the inside may be the reasonS for his injuries.

Will Thomas be traded next week. New DL Coach finished with film study?

Blog consensus seems to be forming around Bosa, then WR, then IOL. If we go safe then each of the first 3 picks hit big pools of talent. If we go FS then hope it is FA, not our 2nd.

  39. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

It’s the slotting process that wins/loses in the Draft.
Gotta stack the Board and assign grades and hope they carry through the process. Hence, extra Picks always help close the gaps.
I’ve got a hope that Earl can be persuaded to join the team for a couple of years and do what Sherman is doing to mentor the kids on the system Saleh is selling.

I like FS Darnell Savage from MD.
    5’11″/198 4.36 182 Tkls/8 Ints – 39.5″ Vert

Hoping he gets into the 3rd or 4th? But WTF do I know?
Getting a buyer on slot 2 would make the process a lot more fluid IMO.
Slide down, acquire an extra Pick or 2 and, have some ammo to move around as needed.

  40. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bullit I can’t expect either Iowa TE to be on Shanny’s radar in RD1.
Therefore, I’m not even going to consider either to be there in RD2.
What’s the report on Kaden Smith from Stanford?
    Good size/numbers but, lousy 40.

This kid looks interesting too –
    Kahale Warring – SDSt – 6’5″/252 4.67 19 Reps 36.5″ Vert (51/637/12.5/8)

  41. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

ET been paid well in his 9 yrs. With all the FS available maybe he will stay at 10 per year for us. Cowboys no bid on ET. Back with Sherman for $10 mil with 2 yr guarantee, why not.

The attractiveness of the deal keeps our first 4 picks away from DB. Need those 4 for 2 pass rushers, WR, IOL.

  42. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Earl Thomas wants to be paid according to Sherman.
If you expect a discount you will not get him.
It will probably take a 4 year $56 mil deal with $35 mil guaranteed.
Slight discount per year because he’s coming off major injury but big guarantee up front.
Eric Berry’s contract with the Chefs is 6 years $78 mil with $40 mil guaranteed is about the range Thomas expects to be paid.

Do you take a shot at Weddle who jut turned 34 and might have at most 3 more years left? A current Niner thinks so

  43. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Supply and demand. Hold off on FA for the first week then see what we can get for 10 mil a year with first 2 guaranteed. If unacceptable then draft FS with 4th or later pick.

CS for secondary needs to be staffed better to get the rookies trained up. Message was sent with DB and DL coaches leaving.

  44. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Free agents like Justin Houston and Earl Thomas will not be there in week 2.

If you are bargain shopping then you’re not serious about making the playoffs.

  45. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Priority is roster development. Two more drafts for rebuild. FA cost versus cap management.

Who developed ET. Who developed Houston and Dee Ford. Coaching staff. No breaking the bank on FA’s. Two with big dollars to spend have their safeties, NYJ and IND.

  46. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    I disagree.

Look at all the grumbling about last season. Some guys on this blog wanted Lynch/Shanahan fired because of “regression”.

I today’s NFL it’s results and if your timetable is 2 more years then Lynch/Shanahan will be one year from the end of their contract.

The Niners have Cap room to spend and they should strategically use it. If $35 mil will get you a Justin Houston and Earl Thomas you spend it. It instantly makes your defense a force especially if you add Bosa.

  47. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Niners won their Super Bowls by spending the money under Eddie D.

When John York took over he shut the wallet and that led to mediocrity and misery.

I want the Niners to spend whatever it takes if it will enhance their shot at a sixth Super Bowl win.

  48. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Roster development doesn’t work these days.
Look at the Pats who are developing players so other teams can pluck them.

  49. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Salary cap put a lid on free spending.

Shanalynch have shown patience and discipline. On top of a bad first draft and churning of poor coaches (or flaky players).

Pass on first draft. Lynch had to purge the easy money bar room bullshit of the entertainment world. Hope he eventually becomes a Bellichick.

This is year 3 so don’t think any panic buttons going off in their heads. After the back to back clown shows they must have a 10 year grace period at least.

Will see shortly how much they spend. FA has not worked well and top players getting cap breaking deals. Look forward to them maybe closing their wallets and let the DL and DB coaches prove themselves in the first year.

  50. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The reason the Niners have so much cap room is because their roster is talent poor and not too many players are worthy of large contracts.

It is necessary to bring in free agents to supplement your draft picks.

It is a huge mistake if you have the money but sit on your hands when you have a shot at a decent player to improve your team.

If Lynch follows BKtom’s formula you end up paying Armstead $9 mil to stick around for another year. If you let Armstead walk for an addition $6 mil you can address one of your pass rush needs and sign Justin Houston.
I would not have re-signed Armstead but it’s done, so he better produce this year.

  51. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Yes those Iowa TEs are sure first round picks. There’s always Irv Smith Jr from Bama, Kaden Smith, Jace Sternberger, TX A&M,
Foster Moreau LSU and Josh Oliver San Jose St.
It’ll be nice to pick one of these guys to complement Kittle.

LBs in later rounds Cody Barton, Utah; Ben Burr-Kirven, Washington; Gary Johnson, Texas; Bobby Okereke, Stanford all can be better than Malcom Smith.

  52. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Niner activity today officially letting Garcon walk.

They have picked up the options on fullback Kyle Juszczyk, defensive lineman Cassius Marsh, linebacker Dekoda Watson and cornerback K’Waun Williams for the 2019 season. Juszczyk made his third Pro Bowl team last season and all were regulars in the lineup when healthy.

Finally, the 49ers have tendered running back Raheem Mostert as a restricted free agent and tendered exclusive rights free agents linebacker Elijah Lee and defensive end Greg Mabin. Mostert ran 34 times for 261 yards and a touchdown before landing on injured reserve in early November.

  53. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Shanahan is thinking like I’m thinking per Maiocco

  54. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Case Keenum traded to Skins for a 6th round pick.
Next season Broncos give Skins a 7th round pick to complete the deal.

That is why thinking you can get a 3rd rounder for Mullens is wishful thinking and you need a reality check.

  55. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

So Keenum gets bump from $7 million to $7.5 million. Broncos save $3 million of $7 million guarantee they owed him, plus move up a round. Washington gets experienced starting QB to compete with Colt McCoy for QB job. Deal official Wednesday.

Valued like a junkyard dog. Did Elway get to piss on him too!

IND had pick #3 last year. Traded down from #3 to #6 with NYJ and got two 2nd’s for 2018 and one 2nd for 2019. Picked LG Quenton Nelson at #6 and RT Braden Smith and OLB Darius Leonard at beginning of 2nd round with their own and one from NYJ.

The OL went from worst in sacks 2017 to first in sacks in 2018, with LG and RT starting every game and both were among the tops at their position. The OLB led the NFL in tackles.

So their top 3 picks started all 16 games as rookies. They were coached up to be elite as rookies. Ultimate confidence in draft assessment and coaching staff. They may not have picked up any FA’s last year, maybe a small amount.

Bottom line no wasted money hedging. Started out 1-6, finished out 9-10 and made the playoffs. We do the opposite.

To stand pat most likely means a 6 win season especially with only 6 draft picks.

Lynch realizes he has to add at least 3-5 impact free agents to make the leap to the playoffs and overtake the Rams and Seahags.

It would be a difficult season to sit on your hands if you have the money and do what you are suggesting. Lynch’s mandate is to do whatever it takes to improve the team. To do what you suggest is malpractice and a losing philosophy.

  58. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

This team is very young. Only old man is Staley. Bethea, Bowman, there is no more of the old guard. We can wait this year out and build via the draft.

No one is pushing the cap organically. DeFo will in one year. Jimmy was an outsider. Why bring in more at the apex of their market power. Take one year hiatus like IND did last year. Let the new D coaches really see what they have before we do another draft splurge on DB’s we may not need.

I posted a couple of months ago that to get a read on how aggressive Lynch would be in the offseason was to see the efforts made to retain Robbie Gould.

Since they franchised him and gave him a $3 mil raise should indicate that they will be a player and not be passive. A $5 mil kicker (among the highest paid) is all you need to know that they intend to be be in the mix and not take any years off. Lynch would look like a fool if he did everything else on the cheap.

I imagine Selah had a say in that. If we get him cheap then it’s probably just insurance.

Jags just released S Tashuan Gipson, DT Malik Jackson and RB Car;los Hyde

  62. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Gipson a single high FS in the same D we have. No doubt we will talk to both Gipson and ET. Gives time for Colbert to develop.

  63. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:
Jag fans do not like seeing him go, a cap casualty. Not a star but good depth and starter until Colbert gets coached up.

  64. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

He knows the D. Much cheaper than ET. Will help mentor Colbert, who has the size and speed we want. KS needs to get serious on this. Weddle to LAR already.

  65. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Weddle signed in one day. Odds Gipson signs with us tomorrow? 80%, Saleh at JAX as LB coach under DC Bradley for one year I believe. DC or HC?

    Git er done.

RIP Cedrick Hardman All Time Niner’s sack leader dead at 70 years old.

He teamed up with fellow DE Tommy Hart to form “The Gold Rush” the Niner version of the “Fearsome Foursome” and “Purple People Eaters” trying to rival the “New York Sack Exchange” and “the Doomsday Defense”.

  67. bullitNo Gravatar says:

I also left out “The Steel Curtain” and I’m sure a few more.

Breaking news Antonio Brown has been traded to the Raiduhs.

Terms of train not available yet

  69. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Sad news about Hardman. He was special. He and Hart and Cleveland Elam were insane in 1976. Best defensive line I’ve ever seen, with due apologies to the Purple People Eaters and Fearsome Foursome. The Bears got more sacks in 1984 but that was blitzing as many as eight guys. The 49ers almost never blitzed in ’76. I think the LBs had two or three of the team’s 57 sacks (unofficial stat at the time). It was almost all just those three and Jimmy Webb against the offensive lines. The line coach was Floyd Peters, who went on to win acclaim with Minnesota. If we had only had a passing game that year.

Legal tampering starts at 10am today so there should be a lot of rumor and speculation.

Analysis of defense and needs and players who might fill those needs

Antonio Brown cost Raiduhs a 3rd and a 5th round pick. Also got a new contract of $19mil plus for 3 years with $30mil guaranteed. Will be interesting to see end result of the trade.

  71. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Actually the legal tampering period starts at 9am tomorrow.
I was incorrect when I said it was 10am today.
So there should be more news and activity tomorrow.

As for Antonio Brown Maiocco reports Niners had no interest based on his attitude and didn’t even approach the Steelers.
Will be interesting how he does with the Raiduhs.
