The Dating Game

Free Agents are falling off their teams like apples from a tree in the early autumn.

So far, the 49ers have not picked up any of these free fruits, but surely they will … won’t they?

The Rams swooped in and signed Eric Weddle, a pretty good FS who’s now at the veteran stage of his career and has made enough money to be able to afford to now go in search of an SB ring. Which the Rams might do next year, but the 49ers will not.

That seems to be the trend these days in the NFL. Guy turns 30, then begins a tour of the league on one to two year rentals until he’s too old for the body rental business and fades out of the league – into the broadcast booth, the coaching business, the mug shot parade, or is forgotten until his obit shows up however many years later.

Wide Receivers are the latest group to be breaking the bank these days. Although none of them – not Julio Jones, Amari Cooper, Tyreek Hill, Sammie Watkins, Odell Beckham, Antonio Brown – have ever led their team to a SB win. Jones came closest, but his OC (some guy whose name escapes me) decided to ride him to the win, instead of calling three unexciting runs and kicking a FG, and we all know what happened with that strategy.

I see Drew Brees has a $33.5  million cap hit this year. And he wonders why his defense is never good enough to win it all. Or maybe it’s his “genius” HC/OC who made the same mistake just last year in the NFC Title game that what’s his name from above made in the SB.

In the meantime, a couple more days until FA starts “officially.” Perhaps our Niner FO will plunge in with wild abandon at that point.

The F-ing Rams are gonna get Dante Fowler also. They are making some smart moves. They were probably gonna win the division anyway this year but now it’s pretty much a lock.

  2. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Raiduhs reached a deal with Trent Brown which is worth $16.5 mil a year with $36 mil guaranteed. Somehow they overpaid for him and the Niners are lucky they dealt him and got McGlinchey.

“The Raiders already have made a move in free agency, striking a tentative deal with Patriots left tackle Trent Brown. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Brown will sign after 4:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday a four-year, $66 million deal.

Of that amount, $36.75 million is fully guaranteed. He also becomes the highest-paid offensive lineman in football, at $16.5 million per year.”

  3. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Niners get their LB by locking up Kwon Alexander formerly of the Bucs for 4 years $54 mil with $27 mil guaranteed.

He’s coming off an ACL tear (who isn’t?) but he’s a Pro Bowl LB.

  4. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Way overpaid for coverage LB coming off ACL surgery. What if he doesn’t fully recover. Can we get our money back. Why would Lynch take this risk. That is the top salary now with 2 years guaranteed.

Peters, Mayhew, and silverspoon are just as responsible. We are not in good hands with our broadcast personality lightweight GM.

Read he is light so guess he is Will, Warner remains at Mike. Please release Smith at least to get back some of that.

    Good comment at the Cohn

Just admit you never watched Kwon play. Healthy Kwon is a Pro Bowl player, a PERFECT system fit, AND he’s 24. The 49ers are likely overpaying for contract flexibility here given the ACL. It was announced as ROLLING guarantees (typically means they can cut ties any year on a certain date with no penalty). If that’s the case it’s a great signing due to upside/scheme fit and a really bad LB draft class.

  6. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

We will have to overpay due to very high state income tax. Our 8 games at home plus 1 at LAR.

  7. bullitNo Gravatar says:

You seem to want to sign everybody on the cheap.

You should be shopping at the 99 cent store.

Alexander is a helluva linebacker and the medical on him is he is ahead of schedule on his recovery.

  8. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

I remember his name! I remember his name!

    SSDD in SF.

Raiders and Rams making big moves while the Niners take a wait-and-see approach as per usual. Some folks will lavishly praise every move they make, or fail to make, before the season and ridicule the same after the season starts.

IIRC, the running joke here, and everywhere, was Baalke’s ACL casualty reclamation projects. Much different when the TeeVee guy does it I guess.

  9. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

    At 2015 combine he was 6’1″ 227 lbs 4.55 40 yd dash .

If reports are true he is being paid top dollar for an off the ball LB. Lacks length and weight, to me is a coverage dime LB Lynch is putting on the field for all downs. He hits like a SS.

So he got lucky with 145 pursuit tackles on a bad D in 2016. Want to see what Hicks and Mosley get. If this is the going rate for his rating I would not have paid. Big money reserved for premium positions. This should have been a 4th Rd pick. LB’s and RB’S almost plug and play from college.

Since he outbid here, we will get ET for 15 million annual with first two years guaranteed. If then get OBJ for a #2 to #6 trade down the salary cap just got tight. We will be the Detroit Lions, another one and done playoff team at best.

Kiss dreams of a Super Bowl goodbye.

  10. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Remember what happens to post ACL procedures on average.
    Lose a step.
Didn’t do much for Bow but, he did have more damage.
    I’ll simply say WTF?
He’s now our highest paid Defensive player?
Poor decision IMO, with Mosley and Thomas in play.
    About that cliff…..

  11. winderNo Gravatar says:

    This just doesn’t sound good.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the deal contains $27 million guaranteed. At least as of right now, it makes Alexander the highest-paid inside linebacker in NFL history. They are eye-brow raising numbers for a player who not even the best linebacker available. 25-year-old (in August) Alexander is also coming off a torn ACL. He battled hamstring issues in 2017 and served a four-game suspension in 2015. Alexander is not an asset in coverage. We are frankly a bit baffled at the numbers. The 49ers are projecting a big step forward.

  12. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Feel good about Cards getting FA Terrel Suggs. So both OLB’s are Chandler Jones and Suggs, for now. They have big roster holes so virtually 100% they won’t go edge. My guess is QWilliams, or if Keim is insane then Murray.

Lynch will stay low risk and take Bosa. Too much risk to rely on other edge with the second pick at #36. All may be gone, that can start for us. He will pick up an expensive FA.

Does he want to afford ET after that. The Wreck of the Reuben Foster put us in this bind. I’D take Tashaun Gipson.

  13. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Here’s 2 guys on my Draft List that can probably be had on the cheap next month if Numbnutz & Co had any sense of how to play the Board –
They likely will grab Bosa because all the Draft Geniouses say he’s phenomenal.

The slot itself is gold in terms of value. Simply see what it’s worth to someone and make hay.

2 ILBs that are smaller but, could be viewed as SS-types IMO –

    Gary Johnson (SS?) – TX – 5’11″/226 4.43 16 Reps/33.5″ Vert (147 Tkls/8.5 Sacks)
    Ben Burr-Kirven (SS?) – UW – 6’0″/230 4.56 21 Reps/34.5″ Vert (338 Tkls/4 Sacks) (4 Ints)

  14. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

A-Hole Snyder, and his bunch, just drove up the costs for Earl too, by giving Collins the deal they did.
Collins is a SS with very little to offer in coverage.
Now he sets the bar by being One-dimensional.
They simply saw it as taking a piece from a Division rival, and likely figure they’ve done damage to NY.
Hey Danny, you just handed them a Comp Pick for a guy they weren’t willing to keep.

  15. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Is it conceivable that after Paraag puts enough conditions on the the Kwon deal, that the devaluing of the Kwon causes both sides to walk away on Wednesday?

  16. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Gipson was brought over by Gus Bradley to be the single high FS in their cover-1 knock off of the Seattle D. Saleh was the LB coach at the install of that D in Jax.

His experience can mentor Colbert who may have ET’s physical skills. This is a cheaper and quicker way of getting Colbert up to FS starter for us. If take ET then Colbert is stuck as backup and wasted for 3 to 4 years.

  17. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Olivier Vernon is new edge at CLE, probably bumping Ogbah. NYG use their #6 on edge. They will not trade up then? NYG got OG Zeitler to give Eli a chance to complete passes to OBJ.

  18. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bakkentom I’m convinced that the Hekawi way of doing things is somewhere between Jerruh and Danny.
Ownership, and their cut-out (Paraag), meddling in the shadows driving things for the business needs. PSLs and fannies in the seats.
    SF-Troop in full bloom.
2 Picks (wasted) on Ruben Foster necessitated a ‘quick fix’ with overpaying for Kwon? Jury still out on Solomon as well.
Trading up for Pettis (another multiple Pick expenditure).
Lynch and Shanny are novices, working for idiots.

Our new and improved Training program is likely to win them what exactly? Guess we needed to add another overpaid ACL rehab to the program to justify their expenditures?

I’ve already amended my annual Draft Party this year.
Not doing RD1 because, I’m likely to injure someone, if they sit pat at 2 and do what the collective Draft ‘Geniouses’ dictate their selection. That is what Jerruh and Danny do. Splash and media hype.

I’m opting for Friday night this year. RDs 2 & 3.
I’m less likely to give a flying rats’ A$$ at that point.

    Fools, and their money….

  19. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

NJ, don’t feel so bad. Could be the raiders.

Gave up #66 and a 5th for Antonio Brown and his contract for what, to put fannies into their crib for a year. 66 mil for Trent Brown, a run blocking stiff.

    #66 is very valuable!

  20. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

If they part with Picks, which are light already, for OBJ, I’ll likely be satisfied in my belief that they’re completely clueless.
Go make a run at LAC WR Tyrell Williams perhaps?
He can be ‘purchased’ right now without any need to involve Picks.
Otherwise, focus on the value of slot 2 and gamble. See who’s willing to break the bank for that slot, ala Danny and the RG III deal with the Rams.
Given the recent record Lynch and Shanny have in the Draft process, more Picks will likely improve their collection of wasted efforts to date anyway.
Might be time for that Poo-fling’n Monkey approach anyway.

  21. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Gruden has a history with Vet WRs Bakkentom, including Jerry.
One thing I’ll say for Mark Davis, beside the bowl cut of course, he’s willing to spend and let the football guys do things.
Mayock probably has more on the ball than Lynch too.
Should be fun to see if AB and Gruden can coexist anyway.
Last thing he’ll want is a replay of his move with Keyshawn back in TB.
To ABs credit though, I think he brings a competitive chip to the table at least.

  22. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Just take no weapons to your draft party.

Does Lynch suffer from CTE, or just born that way.

KS top dog on O, Lynch on D. Peters was put in as a check on Lynch. Lot of ‘splaining to do.

No one is trading into the top 5 this year. Not in a sane world.

  23. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

    SF-Troop Bakkentom.
    Plain. And simple.
Tribe travel West, over stream, over river, over mountain, over mountain, over river, over stream! Then come big day… tribe fall over cliff. That when Hekawi get name. Medicine man say to my ancestor, “I think we lost. Where the heck are we?”

I’m becoming more numb to the York Tribe by the day.
These idiots are clinging to the Eddie Era for all they can get.
While feeling that cool rush of air up their collective skirts on way down from that cliff.
    Clueless is an understatement.

  24. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

This very crazy FA period. Idiocy and ego’s don’t mix.

Read Tyrell Williams will get a deal at the top of WR pay scale. Julio Jones, whodat.

To protect our pocketbooks from our GM, need to draft the premium positions. Edge and WR1 need to be first two picks.

Unless FO figures out a way to bust the salary cap, and get away with that.

  25. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

The Money Man is Paraag anyway. He’s the ownership cut-out. Jed and Daddy’s hand picked MBA protegé.
These clowns are destroying everything we’ve come to expect from Eddie’s reign.
I’m fearing the approaching shadow of the Brown’s inept ownership Legacy.

  26. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Let’s remember the proximity of Cleveland to Youngstown.
Might be something in the water there in Ohio, that causes Generational abnormalities later in life, if you touch an NFL franchise?

  27. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

If Obe-Kwon is our highest paid D, what will we do for DeFo’s second contract. Heist gold bullion out of Fort Knox, the Goldfinger special. Federal Reserve buy more govt treasury bonds for us.

Whatever, it’s called breaking the bank.

  28. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Exactly right Bakkentom. Would’ve made more sense to give that money to DeFo than Kwon.
No beef with Kwon’s production and all but….He’s coming off an ACL.
No reason to make HIM the highest paid guy on the Defense for any reason. It’s simply a knee-jerk reaction to covering up the mistake made with Ruben IMO.
    Stupid is, as stupid does.
    Queue the Poo-fling’n Monkey.

  29. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

1st deal out the box in FA and I’m already digging a hole to hide in for whatever they’ve got coming next.
Earl would make sense at least. Yeh, he’s old, he’s breaking down.
But…he’s plug and play in this System. No leaning curve. Value to the youngsters too.
    Maybe they’ll reel him in? We’ll see….
Would love to see Earl and Savage together personally.

  30. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Good news at least from a personal perspective. I signed up for a gym membership with Son who’s a personal trainer.

  32. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Hard to believe there’s a biological connection to Eddie in all of this.

  37. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

I still prefer the F-Troop comparison.

  38. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Tyrell Williams could likely make bank here in NJ with the NYJ I’m guessing?
Thought he’d make a great compliment to Luck in Indy. They have a boatload of cash to spend as well.
Putting Williams with Darnold makes sense.
    Kudos to Frank too.
Another year to add to his amazing resumé.

  39. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

The Energizer Bunny got nothing on Frank.

  40. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Little Jed could have came out here with the tribe. He was the one on the leash like a sideshow clown.

Bottom line, genetic mutations happened somewhere.

  41. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

CLE has the same salary cap as us, about 68 mil.

Frank did it against all odds. Two knee surgeries in college. We can blame Baalke’s fetishes on Frank.

Both those teams need pass rush and WR1’s. Cannot outbid them but we can beat ‘me in the draft.

  42. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

    beat ’em , not me

  43. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

    No argument there.
Add that to the $400K spent on the Psych sessions and it becomes obvious.
The elevator doesn’t make it to the Penthouse in that building.

  44. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

I can actually buy a gamble on an ACL with a Draftee.
Jaylon Smith had a similar injury to what Marcus Lattimore had.
Nerve damage is hard to predict and normally doesn’t end favorably.
    Lattimore didn’t rebound, Smith did.
Lynch did it with K-Street last year too. We’ll see how that goes this Summer.

However, giving $54Mil to Kwon just seems ludicrous on it’s face.
By comparison to Bowman, you would automatically expect that Kwon will have lost a step, at least.
I just hope they don’t consider this move final with respect to Draft needs at the position. Gary Johnson from TX is very similar in size and has excellent speed.
The amount of money they’re throwing at Kwon blows my mind.
His Agent can’t wait for that Contract to be signed on Wednesday I’m sure. Probably still pinching himself to confirm if it’s real.

  45. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

I like this guy too as an option next month –

    Ty Summers – TCU – 6’1″/241 4.51 36″ Vert (317 Tkls/10.5 Sacks)

  46. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

They can’t sign anything until Wednesday. The agents on both sides of the table will be haggling over details. If our side came to their senses, Paraag could easily become difficult and force the opposing agent to walk away from the deal.

Why not, there is no honor among thieves.

Kwon in 2015 draft had the size and talent of a day 3 pick. Do the swap.

Are GM’s drug tested before going into these negotiations? Is Lynch doing ganja hits out of a bong in secret. Can the lawyers pull a random test and nullify some of these deals. He could be dealing with residual pain from his playing days.

  47. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Didn’t Lattimore have back to back surgeries on the same knee in the same year. Superstar talent had to settle on being a high school coach. Struggling for the legal tender, not a baller anymore. Should have skipped that last year in college.

  48. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Yeh. Hindsight being what it is and all.
Jaylon Smith playing in the Bowl game too.
And, if my Aunt had balls she’d be my Uncle.
Sometimes you just have to scratch your head and wonder what could’ve been in life.

  49. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Here’s what’s likely to be my final draft on the RBs since I’m thinking it won’t be a priority for Shanny next month.

    Miles Sanders – PSU – 5’10″/211 4.49 20 Reps 36″ Vert (276/1649/6.0/12) (32/193/6.0/1)
    Travis Homer – Miami – 5’10″/201 4.48 17 Reps 39.5″ Vert (334/1995/6.0/12) (37/405/10.9/1)
    Mike Weber – OHSt – 5’9″/211 4.47 22 Reps 33.5″ Vert (455/2676/5.9/24) (54/297/5.5/1)
    Justice Hill – OKSt – 5’9″/198 4.40 21 Reps 40″ Vert (632/3539/5.6/30) (49/304/6.2/1)
    Ryquell Armstead – Temple – 5’11″/220 4.45 22 Reps 30″ Vert (573/2812/4.9/34) (29/175/6.0/0)

  53. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The Jest just hooked CJ Mosley for 5 years $85 mil $51 mil guaranteed.
The guaranteed money is almost the total of what the Niners are paying Kwon Alexander for 4 years.

Mosley was a bidding war between the Jest, Ravens and Browns and probably why Lynch didn’t get involved as guaranteed money is 60% of the contract.

  54. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bullit I’d understand the signing if he was 100%
Your TX guy Gary Johnson is about the same size, with better speed.
Sure, stats don’t equate to production and all but, they made Kwon the highest paid guy on the Defense, while not knowing his ability to play right now.

These smaller LBs are en vogue now in the pass happy NFL. They’re asked to be SS-types too. More coverage responsibilities on TEs/RBs.
If Kwon has lost a step, he doesn’t warrant being the highest paid guy, before he walks into the locker room IMO.
Makes no fuk’n sense to me.

  55. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

For that reason, it makes me scratch my head about whether Sherman could (potentially) stand to see Earl come in and blow his salary out the window too?

  56. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The question was raised why didn’t the Niners go after Jordan Hicks if they needed a LB.
I would love them signing Hicks being a former Longhorn but he tore an Achilles in late Oct and I think the ACL is easier to come back from then an Achilles injury,

I guess I’m the only guy that trusts that Alexander will pan out so time will tell, but we have an upgrade at the position and paying that much guaranteed to Mosley would have been a bad deal.

  57. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Totally an unknown for all of us Bullit.
Kwon was solid before the injury.
Now he’s a liability in my mind.
Plus, he’s the richest guy on Defense.
    Just can’t justify such a bone-headed decision.
    But, yes…time will tell.

  58. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

    Justin Houston

  60. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Maybe Lynch is slow playing it like you suggested earlier.
So why are you so anxious for him to pull the trigger???

  61. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Jordan Hicks signs with Cards for 4 years $36 mil with $20 mil guaranteed.

It is reported that Ziggy Ansah is visiting the Aints and the Bills.

So Earl Thomas and Tyrell Williams are still in play for the Niners.

Niners will need a new punter as Pinion is signing with Bucs.

  65. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

    Breaking news Per Albert Breer

“The Chiefs and Niners have agreed to parameters on a deal that would send OLB Dee Ford to San Francisco for a 2020 second-round pick, per source.

  69. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The significant key to the trade in my mind is the pick is in NEXT YEAR’S Draft. Lynch still has the pick in this year’s draft.

  70. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

  71. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Deal for Ford is an extension for %87.5 Mil for 5 years but in football contracts it’s all about the guaranteed money which hasn’t been revealed yet.

  72. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

NYG have to be concerned with who might deal out ahead of them if they’re serious about Haskins.
Now that they’ve acquired some Draft Capital, it could allow them the luxury of dealing into our slot at 2 to get that done.
I can wait until 6 if they can get a pair of additional Picks.
NYG can take a gamble now with little to lose.
Hope Lynch can play the Board. At least a little.

  73. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Dealing away a ’20 2nd for Ford can be recouped with some moves like that.
I like Ford way more than Kwon at this point.
Could allow Lynch to concentrate on Allen, or Sweat, if he isn’t sold on Bosa too.
There’s enough depth in the DE/OLB group to gamble a bit IMO.
Should get interesting tomorrow, relative to Ansah interest, as speculated. Ansah and Ford, if it happens, almost says OLB over DE to me.

  74. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Now this I can agree with 😀

  75. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

CLE feeling good about snatching ET for their FS opening. Another bidding war blowing up the price.

  76. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

NYG acquisition of Pick 17 is almost perfect compensation for our Pick 2 to come up from 6.
    Values –
    Pick 2 = 2600
    Pick 6 = 1600
    Pick 17 = 950

  77. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Lynch could easily recoup next years’ 2nd and a mid-RD pick (or 2) this year too, if they want the 6 for 2 swap.
NYG are holding 4 picks (142/143/155/171c) in RD5 (whereas we have none).

  78. bullitNo Gravatar says:

That scenario has been mentioned by the media many times.
However if I were the Giants I would wait until 2020 to get my QB
where the QB class is chock full of studs far surpassing this year’s crop.

You’ll have Justin Hebert who was mentioned as this year’s top pick, Tua, Jalen Hurts and Jake Fromm to name a few.

If the Giants suck they might very well have the top pick but that’s for them to figure out.

  79. bullitNo Gravatar says:

NFL Network just reported that OBJ wants hic contract bumped up so the diva wants to be paid even though the Giants paid him $21 mil last season.
Let the headaches begin because it seems with talent now comes looking out for himself, the team be damned.

  80. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Hence my prayers were answered that we didn’t sell out for him Bullit.
He’ll reunite with his LSU clic in Cleveland and be their drama queen.
They’ll worship anything at this point.
    Can’t blame them I guess.
    They’ve suffered long enough.

  81. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

NYG GM Gentleman getting beat to death out here this AM.
I think they regret the deal they gave him and the AB drama that happened in Pittsburgh.
Drama and fear of more problems I’m sure.
They get rid of a bad deal while saving face to some extent.
Now comes the blowback of losing a talented player.
    Side shows aside.

  82. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

  83. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

NYG at #6 has to hope an edge run doesn’t clean out their OLB upgrades for their 3-4 D. After OLB1, OLINE has to be their priority. Eli still guaranteed for full 2019.

Need to fix Oline to unleash passing attack and Barkley. They keep their 1st and 2nd Rd picks IMO.

  84. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Dee Ford says there are $87 mil reasons he feels appreciated by the Niners. His deal has $45 mil in guarantees.

  85. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Beneficiary of a bidding war. Dismal pass rush hobbling their D forced the niners to outbid no matter what. NYJ and IND among others pushed it high.

  86. bullitNo Gravatar says:

It turns out Kwon Alexander’s contract with the Niners is very team friendly so most of the screaming about overpayment is unwarranted as the Niners are able to dump the deal after year one if Alexander doesn’t perform as expected.

  87. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Earl Thomas is signing with the Ravens to a four-year, $55 million deal which includes $32 million fully guaranteed at signing.

The deal includes $22 million to be paid out in the first nine months.

Front loaded deal with $22 mil paid before the season starts is very risky in case there are any issues.

  88. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

    NJ, whaddaya say!

Take #2 QWilliams and hope Omenihu is still there for our second pick. If not Cassius Marsh still can be edge across from Ford. Thomas still LEO on base downs.

No such thing as a pocket to step into anymore.

  89. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Breaking news and a big surprise

“The San Francisco 49ers are signing running back Tevin Coleman to a two-year, $10 million deal, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.”

This gives Shanahan 3 RBs of similar size and speed

  90. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Ninrs re-sign Jimmie Ward for 1 year %5 mil

  91. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Malcolm Smith’s new deal is for one year. 1.25 mil in salary with a 2.7 mil cap hit. Insurance in case Obe-Kwon rehab takes longer. He is too small for a SAM backup. Gets cut if Kwon can start the season?

  92. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    I stand corrected.
I always thought Coleman was a little back.
    He’s actually 6’1″210 lbs
4th year player who turns 26 next month

    He’s a solid pickup

  93. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Breida had issues with his ankle all year too.

  94. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bakkentom I’ve always thought Quinnen was a better option than Bosa.
I’m no even putting Bosa on my list. Can’t buy the hype.
Clelin, Montez and Josh Allen would all be acceptable depending where we make a selection. I think there’s enough depth to slide back and still get a good option.
The 2nd slot is gold to me. I prefer to turn it into additional Picks as you know.
Just hope Lynch sees it the same way. Be nice if he gets some offers of course.

  95. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

I make my comparisons to Charles Haley. One thing Charles had was an exceptional wingspan. Aldon too for that matter.
OTs have normally got the long arms as well. When the OT gets that advantage, the DE needs speed to separate.
Bosa just lacks those intangibles IMO.
Sweat has the long arms and the burst I prefer. Where he slots is the question. Allen is an OLB, good burst, shorter arms as well.
I think Quinnen and DeFo would be a dynamic pair that will attract a lot of attention inside too.
Can’t be a bad thing for the LBs and DEs.
And, I would love to add NT Dexter Lawrence to the mix if possible.

  96. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

I wish I had your optimism. Without pro-style QB’s trade downs are not there. This Murray stuff is hype. ARI goes QWilliams. We need to choose at #2. Sweat or Bosa. Football dudes have the time and resources for the best edge.

Coleman and Ward today means we are done?

  97. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Some things to look forward to.

Draft 2019: GM took WILL/SAM and RB off our draft board. One of the EDGE has been found. LEO/edge, WR1, IOL are the holes and left wide open for #2/#36/#67.

Shon Coleman: has size and mobility for RT. Develop for OZ and pass pro.

  98. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

If Cards pass on Murray, someone else could be in play for his services on our slot.
I think the top 10 goes heavy for the Edge guys, along with Quinnen in the mix.
NYG have Picks to come up if they want to. NYJ obviously don’t need a QB, the Raiders? Who knows what Gruden is capable of?
Always a lot of smoke screens involved but, as stated, our slot holds value. Depends who wants to buy their guy or, play the waiting game.
I’m simply saying Lynch should consider any offers that net him additional Picks and allow him to stay within the top 10.

  99. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

This is interesting too Bakkentom – Murrays’ Pro Day today.

All 32 NFL teams had at least one rep at the Sooners workout with the Giants the most involved sending head coach Pat Shurmur, offensive co-ordinator Mike Shula and VP of Player Development Chris Mara, who is also part of the ownership family. The Giants also were the team that met with Murray after his workout.

    Arizona sent no Senior staff.
Bluto Keim might have been on a bender?

  100. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Jaylon Ferguson (45 Sacks) is another guy to keep in mind.
Spent the week with Shanny in Mobile and, got disinvited to Indy.
No clue if he’d get to RD2 but, he surely could fly under the radar, given all the other talent around him in this Class.

  101. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Shanny has to consider a WR in this Draft too I’d suspect.
The guy I’d rank first isn’t DK Metcalf either.
I like Hakeem Butler and his 6’5″ size. Great speed too.
No clue how high he’s slotted but, he might make it to RD2 also.
My early candidates for the Flanker position –

    Miles Boykin – ND – 6’3″/220 4.40 43.5″ Vert (77/1206/15.7/11)
    Jaylen Smith – Louisville – 6’2″/219 – 4.47 34.5″ Vert (152/2505/16.5/15)
    Hakeem Butler – Iowa St – 6’5″/227 – 4.48 36″ Vert – (110/2149/19.5/18)

  102. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Polite may also fall to day 2.

  103. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Still working my numbers in several places.
Gotta concentrate on the WRs now, since they haven’t covered that yet in FA.

  104. bullitNo Gravatar says:

I have heard that Lynch really likes Miss St Safety Johnathan Abram and he would be the guy they might take in the second round if he was there.

Hakeem Butler might still be there at the top of the third round.
Some teams are shying away from Deebo Samuel because he has chronic Hamstring problems so he might drop a little.

  105. bullitNo Gravatar says:

If Irv Smith Jr TE is sitting there when the Niners pick in round two would you consider taking him over a WR?
I still think Shanahan can make a 2 pass catching TE offense deadly.

Pats had it until Aaron Hernandez decided to become a murderer and got caught.

  106. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    News on Tevin Coleman

“Tevin Coleman’s contract with the 49ers is worth just $8.5 million over two years.

It was originally reported as a $10 million contract, but that is the max value ($10.6 million). Even worse, the deal does not come with a signing bonus and pays him just $3.6 million in year one, giving the 49ers the option to cleanly get out after one season. The team-friendly deal means the 49ers should be able to keep Jerick McKinnon is they so choose”

Marathe gets shit here but the guy knows what he’s doing money wise and his contracts are team friendly.

  107. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Niners have signed CB Jason Verrett of the Bolts and LB David Mayo from the Panthers today.

  108. bullitNo Gravatar says:

In a busy day the Niners sign WR Jordan Matthews 6’3″ 215 lbs and ran a 4.46 at the combine in 2014. He was in the same draft class as OBJ and Landry.

    Evaluation from Eagles blog website

  109. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

And he’s related to Jerry Rice.
Might he get some guidance on running the hill?

  110. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Jonathan Abram is a SS. Always liked Jordan Mathews. IOL for 2nd pick? FS? If have to bundle 3rd and 4th to get into 2nd rd.

  111. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Verrett had one really good year and made the pro bowl. Then he got hurt. Blew out his knee in 2016 after four games, only played one game in 2017 before the knee forced him to have more surgery. Then blew out his Achilles in training camp before he ever played in a 2018 game.

That’s a Hell of a lot to overcome. Probably too much. But Hell, as long as it’s not guaranteed money, let him come in and see if he can come back to form. It’s no worse than taking a flyer on a lottery ticket. Just don’t count on anything.

  112. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Heh, also just realized while reading about Verrett that he is from my current hometown of Fairfield. Went to the middle school my daughter currently attends.

  113. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Last offseason we spent big too. Jimmy G then add to with mediocre FA’s. Will we break our history.

Jimmy needs to stay healthy. Dee Ford a plus, but more a wide-9 outside edge type. Get a big LEO/edge with first pick in top 10. So quality QB and pass rush will fix reasons for failure in 2018.

Been a good week. Did not blow out the salary cap. Next week need to assess where the cap is.

  114. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Surprised to see Mark Nzeocha is a FA and may not be back with us. So 220 lb Malcolm Smith and 252 lb Dee Ford may be our SAM’s?

  115. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

So Coleman’s the guy Shanahan recruited in Atlanta but refused to use to win the Super Bowl, right?

And Ford’s the guy who single-handedly kept the Chiefs out of the Super Bowl, right?

I’m beginning to see the “genious.”

  116. bullitNo Gravatar says:

All I can say is Phuck the Rams!!!!!

  117. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Cassius Marsh gone. Dee Ford directly took his spot for the small edge. Other side from the draft. Thomas is default LEO or backup LEO.

Justin Houston or Ziggy Ansah, egads no!

  118. winderNo Gravatar says:

Nofear- Lol. I guess Coleman doesn’t see it that way otherwise he probably wouldn’t want to play for him. Ford’s mistake was costly(not as bad as Buckner’s) and shouldn’t have happened but it did. Hopefully he learned from it.

  119. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Yeah everyone is a genius in hindsight.

Niners are a stronger team with the addition of Coleman and Ford.

There are no perfect players and we can cherry pick any players lowlight mistakes.

I know somebody thinks Mike Nolan was perfect leading us to those many Super Bowl victories, oops, oh never mind.

  120. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Again Phuck the Rams!!!

They just let go 3/5 of their offensive line and Gurley has an arthritic knee which doesn’t bode well if you’re a running back.

  121. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Niners announce that LB Mark Nzeocha is coming back on a 3years deal and the same for RB Rahim Mostert. Both are superb on special teams

  122. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

Winder, I guess he was still running behind Devonta Freeman, who didn’t get the call either, so he may be able to kid himself it wasn’t a lack of confidence as much as the stupidity of the play caller (Now the Niners have both).

But either way, I can guarantee you he knows his current value would be double if he would have carried the rock into the end zone one more time.

Why didn’t Atlanta keep him for such a low price tag? And I have to wonder what he was told about the future plans for McKinnon.

Bullit, don’t get all wound up over a little sarcasm. Sarcasm. Trying to bring a little balance to your foolishness wetting yourself over every move.

I hate to break it to you after all these long years, but the Niners very seldom get much right anymore. And all the other teams don’t always get everything wrong.

One might wonder if the ‘horns scammers have been around a while.

I guess I see your point though, that if every other team screws the pooch on personnel and all their key players get crippled and their coaches suck worse, the Niners may, may, have a fair chance to finish in the over 500 range if they don’t let any fools start up with the hate-America campaign again to distract and divide the team in their efforts.

  123. winderNo Gravatar says:

Nofear- To me this is a rubber hits the road year for this regime. They probably won’t make the playoffs but hopefully they show a marked improvement on both sides of the ball. I still think they will.

  124. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Sarcasm???? Applying alternative facts to football?

It used to be called you stick foot in mouth and head up ass saying something stoopid. Then you TRY TO WALK IT BACK by saying it was sarcasm or you were just kidding?

Used to be guys would “man up” and stand by what they said.

Someone thinks those days are over and uses the “sarcasm” excuse.

  125. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The Safety that has caught my eye is Taylor Rapp out of Washington.
He is a smart safety and is a ballhawk always around the ball. A possibility at top of second round.

  126. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

    I like Rapp too.
    Just thinking he’s going RD1.
    We’ll see how it goes…

  127. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

    Holy sheet batman,

When you look at the team’s activity this last week, it may look like they spent all that money on their new toys. Not so. the 49ers came into free agency with $65 million in salary cap space and after all this madness have $45 million remaining. This puts them fourth in the NFL in salary cap space

Makes me wonder if we aren’t finished yet. Amazed that IND kept their powder dry. They could have bid against us.

  128. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The Niners have a track team in their stable of running backs capable of scoring once past the line of scrimmage.

Coleman was timed at 4.39 in the 40-yard dash before he came out in the 2015 draft. One year earlier, Jerick McKinnon clocked a 4.41 at the combine. Two years ago, Matt Breida ran a 4.39 at his pro day.

Those times are faster than most DBs in the NFL. The stretch zone runs are going to put tremendous pressure on the defense as well as the screen passes. Will open things up for Kittle as well.

  129. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

100+ mil in cap and kept it. Lots of their own FA’s next year. Using the old GB model and build through the draft. Maybe some extensions when the FA hysteria passes.

We bigly overpaid on Ford and Alexander. Paraag gave us an escape hatch with Alexander if he lost too much from the ACL.

Lynch said no-mas to the dumpster fire. Doesn’t like wearing a fake smile. Silverspoon no doubt had input here.

  130. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Teams are going to back off Sweat as it has been revealed he has a “minor” heart condition.

  131. bullitNo Gravatar says:

I think it would piss off a lot of guys on this blog if Lynch sat on his hands and did nothing in the offseason to improve the team.

If Lynch were to take the Colts approach most of the guys on this blog would be asking for his head on a pike.

  132. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

IND has NYJ’s 2nd also. Other than that their own picks are low 20’s in each round. They have too many holes in roster and Luck getting older.

Their DL needs help along with a new batch of WR’s to go with Hilton. Seems overly conservative.

  133. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bullit I’d look to the moves NYG made last 2 years relative to big FAs.
FA to me is often seen as immediate repair efforts.
Hard to find bargains until the ‘dust settles’ after the opening frenzy.
What Lynch/Paraag did this year almost looks desperate. Biggest gaff IMO was how much they threw at Kwon. Sure, it’s structured with an ‘out’ but, why bother? He tore an ACL. I don’t see the mad rush to overpay during the opening frenzy, so to speak.
Would have rather seen some patience there but….? It’s what they did.
Had they used that money with Earl, we might have been able to acquire a Comp Pick for Ward by allowing him to walk.
Now they have 1yr deals with Ward and Verrett while ‘protecting’ themselves from Cap hits, if they don’t pan out medically.
Again. Why bother? I call it kicking the can down the road, as it were.
Doesn’t say much for the Picks wasted on Foster and Akhello so far.
Jury still out on Moore too.

  134. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Tired of all the ‘bargain’ hunting done under the York regime.
Sure, Paraag is good with the Contracts. That’s what many teams lack.
We’ll see how willing they are to retain DeFo next year. Ward has not proven to be durable, though he has been productive when active.
We’re light on Picks this year, in a class loaded with Defensive talent. I just hope they find a way to make some deals, for additional Picks, to get more Rookie contracts on the ledger.

  135. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Given our situation with the kicking game. I haven’t done this in quite some time (Kicker research).
Could Gould balk at a long term deal to remain?
Could we consider dealing him to Chicago?

  140. bullitNo Gravatar says:

With Kwon we don’t know who they were bidding against but it is almost certain that the Niners weren’t the only interested party.

One thing nobody is talking about is both Ford and Alexander are relatively young at 25 and 28 so they are thinking long term and not band aid fixes.

As for Safeties besides Abram there is Thompson from Bama and Adderly from Delaware. I can’t see 4 safeties going in the first round so Rapp might be there along with Adderly.

  141. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Also hard to justify using a draft pick on a punter this year.

I see them picking up Stanford P Jake Bailey if he goes undrafted
or signing someone like Marquette King who Denver cut last year as a one year solution.

  142. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

I’m hoping the DBs get pushed down the board also. More than a few good looking options from what I’ve been researching.
Adderley/Thompson/Abram/Rapp seem to be top 4.
I’m hoping they can steal Savage, Chauncey G-J or Tell in RD3 or 4?
Hard to know how the slotting is going to go.
That’s always been the challenge for me to figure out.

  143. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Too early to give up on Witherspoon. DB coach basically got fired. Need better coaching in the secondary. Tired of spinning wheels and revolving doors.

Fangio wanted experience back there to deal with man-zone and zone-man situations and recognizing the pattern combo’s that expose this. Sherman helps here. Maybe Ward does too.

No more picks here. TMoore, DJ Reed, Marcell Harris, and include Warner since he is a coverage LB? Every year more new meat, release the old meat. What a waste.

Rapp is a SS, no more of these for now. Tartt, Marcel Harris, Exum, blah blah blah.

    1st pick -> pass rush

    2nd pick -> IOL

3rd pick -> edge if QWilliams at #2, FS or WR let the draft board determine this
