Wow. The Draft. Is there any way we can outsource this thing? It’s worse than the Super Bowl hype week. It’s on every channel. Every talk show. Every blog. Endless mocks. Endless endlessness. Help!!
Don’t get me wrong. The draft is a nice little thing. It used to be enjoyable. Now it’s just one long colossal overkill bore. Is there anything more ridiculous than a seven round mock draft? Hardly anyone in the universe even nails the first round. And you can bet that one week after the draft is over, some colossal moron will put out a 2017 mock draft with an entire college and pro season yet to be played.
A few more days of this nonsense before we can actually sit down and watch it play out. Then we can forget about it and get back to the business of ridiculing the 49ers. Probably with a whole bag of new specimens that Trent Baalke somehow thinks can play this game.
Baalke has turned the Niners into a minor league team. Every year he drafts guys who “try out” for the team. Usually, the try out lasts about three years. In the final year of their rookie contract, the guys who are good go someplace else in Free Agency to get paid their worth. The guys who stink get traded for seventh round draft picks. The guys who are merely good or average get signed to an extension — our “core” team of good, but not great, players, surrounded by try out players.
Baalke has drafted nine defensive players in the first three rounds the past three years and the defense last year ranked 29th. Come Thursday, he’ll draft another slew of defensive guys and the defense will still suck in 2016. I rest my case.
Yeah skeebs, if it wasn’t so depressing it might actually be funny. How long will it take for Jed to realize Baalky doesn’t draft very many good players.
Have some time now. NN has scouting reports, also nfl draft tracker.
#7 must be a franchise starter. We need stars.
With our sad roster RD 1 lands a high level immediate starter. RD 2/3 must yield starters by the end of 2016.
Am hoping that AD quiet is pre-draft mis-direction and TB has confidence that he is able to be his old self as starter RT. Kap gets traded on day 2. Nick Foles picked up as backup. Draft developmental QB RD 3 or so.
Chances are the Rams will cut Mannion at QB and he’ll be a cheap pickup and Chip can see what he can do with him.
Still think Niners draft Hogan in 4th round and see what they can do with him.
Hogan’s rep is very smart. His football IQ will allow him to pick up the mental aspects of any system quickly.
His slow delivery is being worked on now. He needs to be grabbed in the 2nd? He is low risk.
Chip has already had success with Foles. He comes cheap, and he is big and with our oline the ability of not being scared and staying in the pocket is a big deal.
Our picks RD 1 to Rd 3 need to be OL and front seven D. Foles allows us to do that. If we can pick up an extra 2nd, Michael Thomas WR would be great for our 2nd if he lasts.
NN has a final trade rumor piece on #7. Seems Tunsil/Buckner/Stanley are it. Jack is off the radar and Ramsey of interest if still there.
Also a trade to get back in the bottom 1st, including a Kap trade. We get DEN #31??? for #37 and Kap? YES!!!!!!!
TB is under pressure to get immediate results.
Trade up: give up a 4th and 6th to grab Buckner at #3 or #4. Why not, we have a very young roster on rookie contracts. If we wait there may be trade up offers we can field. IMO we need Buckner or Wilkerson from our first pick.
fwiw maiocco on The Game said it will be Buckner. Both OT’s off the board.
This from a NN comment. SD and BALT realize it is a deep dline draft class and will go that way for their 2nd picks? Is the rumor believable.
These high picks are make or break for GM’s. We know firsthand that 3-4 DE picks must be able to read and react to all kind of blocking schemes in what we demand from DE’s.
Take no more chances. Buckner, Wilkerson, or TB you are fired.
Kap has not been able to lift weights and he looks a lot different. Judge for yourself.
http://tinyurl.com/gobrbfl
Wilkerson trade could also occur with 2nd RD picks of SD, BALT, SF, and CHI. #37 plus AD for MO? Too much, then #37 plus Brooks plus Lemonier for Mo?
http://www.windycitygridiron.com/2016/4/25/11500364/5-technique-extravaganza
Possibility that Ramsey, Bosa or Jack fall to #7 if Dallas opts to take Ezekial Elliot and Buckner, Tunsil are drafted before the
7th pick.
Any of those three would be a great pick for the Niners if things break their way.
Also if Elliot is still on the board at #7 Dolphins might want to trade up from #13 and if Baalke can wrangle a 2nd rd pick it might be doable.
One position that seems to be lacking are the receivers/tight ends which is a major weakness.
Without Boldin there is no proven go to receiver.
So we are back to the Arnaz Battle, Josh Morgan and Jason Hill days where they supplemented that group with a veteran like Darrel Jackson, Ashley Lelie and Isaac Bruce.
Somehow Celek and McDonald do not strike fear into opponents as receiving threats.
So either Patton and Ellington step up or Smelter has a remarkable rookie season or this team needs receiving talent in the worst way. The jury is still out on Torrey Smith.
Baalke signed Torrey Smith for about the same contract that the Raiduhs signed Crabtree to.
Smith had 33 catches last year 663 yds and 4 TDs.
Smith didn’t even come close to performing to his contract
In contrast Crabtree had his usual year 85 catches 922 yds and 9 TDs which are typical numbers for Crabtree.
Baalke chose to let Crabtree go and not even offer him with no replacement but a group of unproven receivers and Jerome Simpson.
More blunders by our GM
Baalke has placed the Niners on the hamster wheel.
Now that they have the “deep threat” in Toirrey Smith they no longer have the players to work underneath like Boldin, Crabtree and Vernon Davis.
The Niners are in serious need of a WR that can consistently get open and move the chains.
Baalke just can’t seem to get all the right pieces together. There always seems to be a hole.
In order to really go deep the Oline needs to give the QB time to throw. You have a deep threat but no pass protection. What to do?
I’d take a chance on RB Keith Marshall in Rd 6 if he’s there.
This is the guy that was starting ahead of Todd Gurley before he hurt his knee. This might prove to be more of a Frank Gore outcome than aMarcus Lattimore.
Fron Niners Nation
“Keith Marshall – RB – Georgia
A highly touted high school prospect and Georgia freshman sensation, Marshall was sidelined by injuries and great talent ahead of him throughout his collegiate career. Nevertheless, Marshall is poised to have a better pro career than a college one. A potential hidden gem that is strong, quick, and very fast (4.31 40), and should be a great fit in a zone scheme.”
Bradford is demanding a trade but not to Niners.
Bradford doesn’t want to reunited with Chip.
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/25567997/report-sam-bradford-doesnt-want-trade-to-49ers-because-of-chip-kelly
“49ers’ GM Trent Baalke told Bob Holtzman ESPN that it’s possible Colin Kaepernick could be traded this week.”
Another guy that I think would be a steal in round 4, Nick Kwiatkoski
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1877196/nick-kwiatkoski
NY daily news has very good article on Mo and says trade talks will heat up now.
NYJ could be saving #20 for Paxton Lynch or Connor Cook. Mo can be gotten with our 2nd plus Lemonier?
Will Bucs Mike Glennon or Nick Foles go to DEN. We may be forced to release Kap.
King Dunlap LT of SD was injured most of last season. If they take Tunsil we could swap with Dallas and grab Buckner. Will there be a bidding war for Buckner.
Want to hear today or tomorrow that Mo has signed his tender.
http://www.foxsports.com/college-football/story/stanford-cardinal-nfl-virtual-reality-qb-training-031115
http://www.ninersnation.com/2015/7/20/9006745/49ers-sign-deal-with-virtual-reality-company-for-player-development
So niners and cowboys were the first two NFL teams to use the VR headset.
Stanford’s Hogan upped his performance, in blitz pickup and redzone. The team consistently winning games in 2014. So in 2015 why didn’t the niners and Kap have some success, any success.
Kap off this roster can’t happen soon enough. Two incompetents are millionaires courtesy of silverspoon. Mommy must be proud.
Reality is Buckner will be taken before #7. TB does not have the cajones to trade up to get him.
Best move is swap with NYJ for Mo. NYJ needs both LT and RT. Clady is glass and Breno is pedestrian. Stanley and Conklin should be there for them.
League offices close at 4pm EST, so hoping to hear Mo has signed his tender.
Lots of good selections for #20, such as OG, C. Assumption is AD is the starting RT.
Not likely, Bakken. From Davis today:
“I do not want to work with a front office or anyone else who seemingly doesn’t want to win as bad as I do.”
“Would you happily rent your body out to people that bullshit you and constantly try to manipulate you?”
Saw that. WTF is with TB, alienating an important piece. We cannot trade him for much until he proves himself this fall.
If we had a clear thinking FO, immediately fire TB and let Gamble handle the draft, etc.
Chip has to be screaming at Jed. This is a clown show. TB is not right. Get rid of his scrawny ass.
So Tom if Mo signs his tender he can then be traded? We need help on the DL and yep Buckner won’t be there at 7 so getting him would help. Balkey ain’t trading up if history is correct. (Actually we traded up for Reid and for AD). If we take Jack I’ll be tempted to OD on coconut juice…
OTOH building through the draft is a great strategy IF you have someone who can evaluate players and keep a coaching staff intact. Is there anyone here more hopefully dedicated than NJ?
Well Phil, I’ll continue to do my homework Draft-wise, (for whatever that gets me).
It appears as though the AD comments are directly reflective of the post-Draft hiatus he took last year coming back to bite him?
He’s still in play, as far as I’m concerned, to be dealt before the weekend is out.
Baalke is returning the favor (apparently), for his sabbatical.
Winder: Gee, guys… the 49ers are gonna suck, but I’m still a fan.
Tom: Duh… I like carrots and tatters.
Phil Fan: What am I doing here?
NJ: Man, I can’t wait to spout endless drivel about the draft that nobody will really read. That’s the highlight of my life.
Skeebers: Niners suck, news at 11.
Tom: Sarah Palin should run for President. She’s smart.
Bullit: Did you guys see what Chuck wrote on his blog about me? Oh, man. Oh, boy. He really grinds my gears. I think he does it intentionally. My life would be complete if I could just get over on Chuck one time. That’s what I live for…
Grump: Tequilla!
Sir Spitblood: Why the hell are you guys still blogging about the 49ers. Mass retirements and a ROT who openly criticizes the front office and owner? When Justin Smith left he said, “Maybe I’ll buy the team from Jed York….” as a parting shot, insinuating the roster didn’t like the owner even then. The ROT doesn’t want to come back. The QB wants out. The remaining talent left the building long ago and Jed York now has the second lowest NFL payroll. But hey, who cares? He got Harbaugh and Harbaugh got York Levi stadium. Who cares if they have a winner…. oops… the players. Forgot about them. The players care. And if the players don’t have faith in the owner, you’ll have a team that sucks for decades.
Have fun. Phuck the 49ers. And phuck Jed York.
Sir Spitblood: Working tirelessly to convince 49er Fans that there really is a place called Geneoushire.
Somewhere in the deepest recesses of his own mind.
Can’t defend Anthony Davis. He’s a head case nutjob.
If he truly wanted to make a comeback he would’ve applied for reinstatement already. Don’t see how it benefits AD to do so “later this year”.
Davis is yanking the Niner’s chain and Baalke is right on this one. Davis went AWOL last year when they were counting on him.
There is no trust from the Niner’s side and there shouldn’t be IMHO.
Raiduhs covet RB Ezekial Elliot as do Dolphins.
They draft 14th and 13th. To move up to the Niner’s 7th spot they need to give up their 2nd round pick. That would give the Niners 3 picks in the top 50 and with the 13th or 14th pick guys like Lawson, Floyd and Treadwell come into play.
Clearly there is only a dim future for Niner football but so what? I’m doing it for the fun, the laughs or in language you may appreciate for “the fellowship”.
The Niners stink? We all got that, can’t fix it. It’s bad enough facing reality, non-denial, so what are the options? Join the delusional cult over at Chuck’s? Attack the select membership here as being “bad as the team”? Root for the Las Vegas Raiders? Really? Ride the hate Jed bandwagon forever? Drink, use, depress? Switch to loving field hockey?
Or laugh, mock, snark, smirk and whoop it up about ‘how bad are we’? While maintaining our interest in ‘our guys’. With these guys. Sure the Niners stink and have lost their way. Call me faithless this will change any time soon but that’s no reason to despair, get too angry or leave.
How many more years will Balkey get to fix this mess? Right too many.
Anthony Davis would have been better off maning up and telling the GM “Trade me” rather than handling it in a way that hurt the team. But a lot of Niner players retired or played out their contracts and moved on. Davis should have negotiated his release and return of signing bonus up front. This was avoidable
Yep we need to draft his replacement in late rounds.
Myles Jack is sliding almost to the middle of the first round because it was revealed he might need micro fracture surgery to bolster his knee and his long term health is in question.
With a top ten pick you hope to have that player through 2 contracts. Some GMs think Jack might have a short career in the NFL.
It all comes down to what your team’s medical team thinks.
I have said in the past that Iupati was the better player and I often wondered why the Niners gave Anthony Davis the contract that they did.
The talk that they could kick Davis inside to Guard was disturbing because he signed for Tackle money. Anthony Davis was never recognized for being a special player with no Pro Bowls or accolades in his resume.
What Davis did last year and the games he keeps playing are juvenile and unforgivable.
Hope Anthony Davis has a second career in mind as the easy money stream is ending.
Lol
Well it’s draft day. Let’s see what the niners get me for my birthday !
Bosa, Buckner ,Lawson or Stanley please !!!
Bullit, those 3 players are unacceptable for 1st RD franchise players. We need a star and can get a star at #7, definitely if give up a 4th or 5th to trade up.
Lawson is not a bender. Floyd is this year’s Randy Gregory. Treadwell another Crabtree, at best a very good WR2.
For me, we need Buckner, Tunsil, Stanley, or the Mo Wilkerson trade. Even trade back a few slots for Conklin.
Tunsil probably will go in the top 5
If Ravens draft OT at #6, the current LT Eugene Monroe will be available. He for AD?
Ravens have Brandon Williams and Timmy Jernighan for their 3-4. A top OT for Flacco’s blindside after his injury last year seems logical. Lots of 3-4 developmental candidates may be their for their 2nd.
Need to get by San Diego. Would SD take a 4th from us to swap. Our 4th is almost a 3rd. How about AD after TB trashed his value.
SD GM says they have been locked on one guy all along but will trade down but still in top 10.
To me the stars are Buckner, Wilkerson, and Tunsil. Stanley is weak in run blocking.
My preference is trade #7 for Mo and #20. We keep the 1st and #20 on OG/C or OT like Spriggs?? or trade AD for Eugene Monroe or keep AD if possible??
Rookie Buckner would be the preference of many here and is OK. This approach makes it more likely to tank this year for a 2017 top 5 pick.
If we want Buckner we should trade up to gaurantee it or have the Mo trade in our pocket if Buckner taken by SD or BALT.
Holy. ..
Well I think we’ll be just fine.
If not well …
Eli Harold at 270 lbs, says down to 265 for preseason. I hope he can be enough of an edge rusher that we do not have to spend picks at OLB.
The beautiful thing about having so many options and choices of who to draft is we have THE HOLES for them to fill!
I like starting my day on a positive note… Carry on
The kid from Novato Jared Goff goes #1 to LA.
Wentz to PHI next?
BASG sees the AD mess as reflecting Niner FO disarray. Or more likely the lack of ‘people skills’ in negotiating with players, coaches =
http://www.bayareasportsguy.com/toxic-team-toxic-tweets-anthony-davis-puts-49ers-on-blast/
Go ducks
Yup, Ducks and Kelly together again. Can you believe Bosa at #3? But this is a good move for the ‘Win with our D’ Niners.
Guess trade fer Mo is out…
Kawakami points finger at Niner FO re: AD mess but sez AD has to share the blame.
http://blogs.mercurynews.com/kawakami/2016/04/28/49ers-raiders-myles-jack-might-best-fit-might-end-neither/
Quinton Dial can’t be too pleased.
Yep Dial to NT? He’s a rotational player sez Cohn’s blog people.
QB, and OL tomorrow, that will be a start
Broncos got their future QB in Paxton Lynch (Memphis). Kap market drying up.
Niners trade up to take Joshua Garnett -Stanford OG- just ahead of Cardinals.
No trade details yet but they did give up their round 2 pick.
I think Garnett is a solid pick and a needed pick to replace Boone.
Niners gave KC their 2nd rounder as well as a 4th and a 6th this year to move up.
I guess he really wanted this guy.
Nice to see ’em sticking to basics = the OL and DL. None of the AJ Jenkins, LMJ crap. ADs replacement = Joshua Garnett.
Balkey to AD: “Bite it smack”
Love what happened. SD took Bosa for some reason. Perfect night. With this talent infusion we still may draft top 10 next year. Oh what a night.
Garnett obsoletes Marcus Martin and Brandon Thomas. Buckner fixed the Tank mistake. TB cleared his phuck ups tonight.
PFF
“Joshua Garnett earned a +33.1 run block grade in 2015, the best grade among OGs in the NFL draft”.
Iupati 2.0? Better at run blocking than pass protection.
Per Maiocco
49ers remaining draft picks
-3rd (68)
-4th (133)
-5th (142)
-5th (145)
-5th (174)
-6th (207)
-6th (211)
-6th (213)
-7th (249)
I would target Kevin Hogan using pick 133 in the 4th rd
Pick 142 LB Kwiatoski if he’s there.
Niners also need to target a TE and pick #145 to target Devon Cajuste who can be that “joker” TE
No doubt Baalke has James Bradberry CB Samford in his sights from the same school as Tartt with pick 207
If AD wants out, maybe our 3rd plus AD for a high 2nd for the best RT on day 2.
Joshua Garnett wants to be a trauma surgeon after his NFL days. A med school student to be. He knows all about the physiology of concussions.
He needs to impart with AD.
I wonder if he can read D.
How can Kap possibly get back in the mix when he demanded a trade and his perceived distrust of the Niners?
We don’t even know how the locker room feels about Kap as a leader.
Last year Kap was the loner who kept to himself constantly wearing the headphones and not much into interacting with Team mates.
If there is a problem will Baalke just release him?
At this point no one wants to inherit that contract, the negotiations to reduce that salary big time will not be accepted by Kap.
Bills have Tyrod Taylor. We cannot take a chance on him getting injured. Save him for what. A 6th RD pick??
He has wasted too much coaching and GM effort.
At RT are Shon Coleman and Spriggs next up. LT Eugene Monroe is now expendable. Is he worth a trade from BALT.
With a beefed up Eli Harold and Tank back to his college edge rushing days, OLB not a candidate for our last pick for a starter position.
The two 1st RD picks make this draft a success. With all the rookie contracts on the roster now, that 3rd traded for a 2nd in 2017 may also make sense.
Lots of competition at LG, C, RG, and RT. More platooning of starters may be in the plans. Garnett elevates that competition. Brains, power, athleticism. A franchise OG.
Buckner makes the other 10 better, a force multiplier, a franchise 3-4 DE. In 2017. Foundation has been laid. This a transition year, a bridge season to better times ahead. Top ten 2017 pick still in play.
Fix the trenches first. Mission accomplished
For RT Le’Raven Clark, Shon Coleman, and Jason Spriggs are nextremely up. Can we package our 3rd, a vet and/or picks to get one of them in the 2nd.
Sadly most of the Niner roster that you would trade would net you a 6th or 7th round pick at best.
Nobody wants Lemonier or Tank.
Yes we have a lot of holes to fill = QB, WR, ILB, OLB, CB, RB? but I will be satisfied if we take an RT with our next pick. Our OL and DL would be largely fixed or in a position to compete. Can we package AD with some picks to get into 2nd round?
Tackle seems to have the best talent left. I’m not sold on Cook as a QB but if they are intent on dumping Kappy they might reach for him here in the third.
Heh. Another ACL guy. Cornerback, probably won’t do much this year. Classic Baalke.
Yup we got our injured ACL guy from the banjo hitter GM. OT just too obvious I guess. Wow
“Trent Baalke expects Will Redmond to be ready for beginning of training camp”
Hmmm maybe not so bad after all = The 49ers appeared to draft another ACL red-shirt candidate. Maybe that’s not the case with Will Redmond?
http://www.ninersnation.com/2016/4/29/11542612/trent-baalke-expects-will-redmond-to-be-ready-for-beginning-of
Yeah, he’ll be ready to collect a paycheck and sit in the Jacuzzi.
Unexpected things happen in the draft.
If we waited and got Garnett later and saved our 4th. Connor Cook was there and a trade up done?
Seems 3rd RD Redmond done to help replace Bethea when he leaves. Reid moves to SS. Ward to FS. Redmond to slot CB.
I would have taken Connor Cook instead of him.
Kevin Hogan to KC and Connor Cook to OAK.
What is the QB plan? Sure looks like Kap stays here. Pick up Nick Foles.
I still consider 2016 draft a big win with Buckner and Garnett. Too many DB’s so cuts hit there.
JAX a big winner. Looks like top 5 pick for 2017 draft. WTF from RD 3 and later.
New post is up.
