Texas Hold ‘Em

49er Game Day! Hot diggity! Yabba dabba doo! Take a hike, World. I’m closed for your business today. Yikes! Ouch!

Jim Harbaugh has made it known he will sprinkle his backups into the mix while the Texans’ first stringers are in the game tonight. Some people think he’s defying conventional wisdom and some think it indicates he’s still not sure who his starters are. I think it’s because he wants to know which of his backups he can use in the regular season.

Harbaugh likes to use as many players on his roster as possible. The non-starters are not just there to be ready if a starter goes down. They are there to have a role in the games. Everybody gets to play. This makes the players happy and keeps them game ready every week. This is a coach who actually had a Stanford player change his jersey number at half time just to mess with the other team’s heads. Maybe it only gave him an edge on one play, maybe it was just to throw a little WTF into their minds.

The Texans are a perfect test for our new defense today. They can run the ball and they can pass it. Their offense is playoff worthy, one of the best in the league. Their defense has been their undoing each of the past couple of years. That and Peyton Manning. But Manning might not be ready to start the season and the Colts might be vulnerable. The Texans feel this is their year. They’re going to play this game hard.

To improve their defense, the Texans signed CB Jonathan Joseph this offseason and hired Wade Phillips as their DC. Good old Wade. He makes a lousy head coach, but a great defensive coordinator. The Niner offense will be tested this evening, too.

Tongiht’s game is the last clue available before the blogopolans set their expectation meters for the year. Some of you may want to revise your crystal ball entries after this game. Upward or downward. I’m letting it ride on eleven and five. Sight unseen. Gold or bust. No bland reasonableness here. I’m banking on the “no respect” factor. If this team gets on a roll, and the early schedule gives them a shot at it, they are going to take out a lot of frustration on the league this year.

Or they could check in with another lame effort and I’ll have to keep answering the same question all year long: “What were you thinking!?”

Go Niners! Don’t fail me now!

Since I think the biggest problem we had last year was the coaching, I have to predict an improvement for this year. I’m just not sure how much yet. I’m waivering between 7-9 and 9-7.

  2. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

That’s what you get for going over to Chuck’s blog last night. You have been infected with the waiveritis.

  3. BergerNo Gravatar says:

About the new coach and coaches, I like this staff a lot so far. I like their personalia, but I liked Nolan’s and Sing’s too. I just think this staff is better at preparing the team. We’ll know better about that in a few weeks.

  4. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Tonight’s game is going to give us a decent feel for our defense. I’ll probably have a better idea for my prediction after I see the game tomorrow. I’m going to miss the game tonight but I’ll watch the recording tomorrow.

  5. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Unca’s blog should be called “Shoot From the Hip and Damn the Facts”. After all, the facts just get in the way of their opinions.

  6. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

The facts are Alex Smith is 19-31 as a starting quarterback, and some of you are predicting 10 and even 11 wins this year.
You’re right Berger, 鈥淪hoot From the Hip and Damn the Facts.”

  7. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Del- So I guess this means you approved of our coachng the last few years?

  8. winderNo Gravatar says:

I wanna see some offense, and once again our boy Alex is at the helm. Do I feel confident?. Hell no. Is there a possibility he could have a good game? I guess so. Until we get a real QB we are going nowhere. We will be lucky to win 8 games this year.

  9. bullitNo Gravatar says:

There is another scenario for the Niners to draft Andrew Luck.
He could have a mediocre season at Stanford and fall like Leinart did out of the first pick.
Unless you root for Stanford that might be a better scenario than wishing for the Niners to tank it.
Next year there are some franchise type LBs as well as some big WRs among them Jeff Fuller Jr.

  10. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

I expect Stanford to probably seriously miss Harbaugh and fall back a little this year. But for Luck to fall enough to reach us in the middle of the first round… that is unlikely.

  11. robNo Gravatar says:

holy crap BULLought i was theIT , i th king of hope !

  12. robNo Gravatar says:

oh my god … nice post !

to repeat , i thought i was the king of positivity !

  13. robNo Gravatar says:

yup , chucks blog is funny right now ! imo one guy is steering the conversation over there !
and he’s not the most stable of folks !

  14. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Andrew Luck have a “mediocre” season at Stanford? Bullit, you either must be a goddamn Cal fan or dumb as the stump on one of Rob’s Bonsai trees.
If Andrew Luck isn’t drafted (barring injury) Top 5, I’ll buy everyone here one of Rob’s trees.

  15. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Dennis You said the same thing about Matt Leinart and he dropped to pick #10.
Extremely hard to predict these things. Did you know of Cam Newton before this year? Supposedly Mark Ingraham was a lock to be a top 5 pick and look what happened to him.
Rob better start channeling his inner Mr Miyagi cuz Dennis is gonna be his biggest customer in 2012

  16. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Dennis Before you blow a gasket i was kinda kidding about Leinart because i am dumb as a Bonsai stump.
Wahtever happened to Stump Mitchell. For some reason I associate Stumpy with Stubby.
    Remember Stubby Kaye?

  17. BergerNo Gravatar says:

I thought Dana Stubblefield was Stubby?

  18. BergerNo Gravatar says:

I wouldn’t mind Del sending me a Bonsai tree!

  19. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Berger Yes he was Stubby.
Speaking of Stubblefield I always think DUI. I wonder what’s going on with Braylon Edwards and his possible suspension? Shouldn’t Goodell rule on this so the Niners can prepare if he is suspended?
Or is this a case of no news is good news?

  20. BergerNo Gravatar says:

I’m going to a friend’s 60th BDay/retirement party. Going to miss the game but I’ll see it later on the NFL network. I can drive to his house in about 2 miles. Or, I can take the quad over the hill and be there in about 400 yards. As much beer and whiskey as I intend on drinking, it could save a DUI. Don’t tell Goodell.
My friend’s son took the picture of Uday and Qusay when they got killed, I hope he is there to talk to. He is a bit high on the Army intelligence scene. He can never say much, if anything that is going on, but I still get some normal info you never hear on the news. He also trains the infantry on riding quads. Guess what we do if we get a spare moment? Yes, we ride. Prolly won’t do that tonight, there is going to be live Bluegrass music, I’ll want to see that.

  21. winderNo Gravatar says:

Berger, sounds like a great time, party hardy.

  22. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Berger, please tell your Miss Plungerette to have a drink on me and that I love ‘er. Then tell ‘er to take that love and make it do a 180 and send it Alex Smith’s way.
Alex needs a plunger up his ass.

  23. winderNo Gravatar says:

Hey rob, Do you Bonsai ur own trees? Years ago I had a friend who did bonsai pot plants, they were a thing of beauty. Almost translucent.

  24. robNo Gravatar says:

from what i just heard on knbr the biggest thing our new staff has going for it is the competition at all positions (never heard that b4 )!
so watch for the sintillating battle tremaine brock is in 2 nite !
also i hear somewhere that alex smith is in big jeopardy of losing his starting spot to troy smith !

  25. robNo Gravatar says:

in other big news , the same know it alls just said
“you can bet the carolina panthers just didn’t draft cam newton to back up claussen !
(imo neither one is all that !) i like copernicus better !

  26. robNo Gravatar says:

omg , harbaugh just had dashon gold-ston’s back ! the fact that he doesn’t even seem to know there’s no
‘T’ in his name means nothing to me !
after all , i’m just as commited to my team as … bullitwongrazor is !

  27. robNo Gravatar says:

    jesus h berger !
uday and quusai ! (or whatever ?) don’t you know muamar quadaffi is the biggest a-hole out there now ? and just an fyi , his sons are all either dead or soon to be that way !

  28. robNo Gravatar says:

aw fudge i just missed the point of berger’s whole post ! looks like i’m the biggest a-hole out here !

  29. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

No need to worry on that front, Rob. As they say, “opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.” 馃榾

  30. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Jesus H. Christ. I know it’s preseason, but Candlestick is a goddamn ghost town. I think some people might have got scared off from last week’s unfortunate doings.
AHMAD BROOKS!!! First play of the game. Thanks for the gift Mr. Schaub.

  31. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

MS never saw ’em. That was easy pickings. I’m lovin’ our defense thus far this preseason…

  32. robNo Gravatar says:

ok my link sucks anybody got another one ?

  33. robNo Gravatar says:

omg can we ever block on a 3rd down pass

  34. robNo Gravatar says:

gulliver is in a battle with brock imho

  35. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

We look like shit thus far. Aside from that free gift on the first play from scrimmage, we got nada.
10-6? 11-5? What time do you guys open up at the Punch Line? You’re pretty funny.

  36. robNo Gravatar says:

lol free gift ! del , brooks and our defense are pretty good imo !
alice and our offense need to get it in gear !

  37. robNo Gravatar says:

oops kap ! well we just gave the gift back ! but kap needs to remember to go for the stop there !

  38. robNo Gravatar says:

sorry , but our QB’s are letting us down here !

  39. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Rob, how many times do I have to remind you?
    We have NO quarterback!

  40. robNo Gravatar says:

so far no good ! i really wanted to see us look good two weeks in a row , something we really haven’t done in years (even in preseason )! but no way jose !

  41. robNo Gravatar says:

hunter and rjf are our only bright spots 2-nite imo

  42. TonyNo Gravatar says:

Our OLine is TERRIBLE…Montana wouldnt complete a pass …

  43. robNo Gravatar says:

omg ! we’re watching kubiak vs. harbaugh ! how the mighty have fallen ! 馃槈

  44. robNo Gravatar says:

  45. robNo Gravatar says:

  46. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Tony, *maybe* Montana wouldn’t have completed a pass with our TERRIBLE OL, but I can guarantee you he wouldn’t have thrown those two TERRIBLE INTs courtesy of both Kaep and Smith.
Sometimes in football it’s not what you do, it’s what you don’t do that wins you the game.
    We have NO quarterback!

  47. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Kaepernick’s passer rating is still 0. Alex Smith’s passer rating in first half was . . . 2.8. Seriously.

    We have NO quarterback!

  48. robNo Gravatar says:

nofear … see my post on the insider ! lol

del how bout that cade mcnown ! or who ever we got !

  49. robNo Gravatar says:

    ok you guys !

if you listened to me we would have signed a vet QB ! smith is mediocre at best and kap will be good in yr. 3 !

if you and nolan were better we would have traded smith for brady and gore for three all pro players and won more superbowls ! imo it’s all ur fault !

  50. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

    Well, wasn’t that fun?

Like being ass raped by a gorilla, I suppose.

Kill me now, I can’t watch another year of this shit.

  51. BergerNo Gravatar says:

NoFear- I feel your pain. I’m a bit concerned about the coaching, but not to the point of being worried. Not yet, not in pre-season. What really worries me is our O-line. Can’t get a rythm without the line executing. If they do not improve, this will be a spread offense. At least if they want to score.

  52. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Despite the score, the D-line looked good again. The LBs were putrid and the DBs seemed to miss many assignments. So far, Whitner is a bust. He can tackle, he can’t cover. I’m not worried until the regular season starts, but I have noticed some things that I wish were better. Mostly, the O-line.

  53. BergerNo Gravatar says:

    I like Kendall Hunter.

  54. BergerNo Gravatar says:

I think Dobbs has made the team.

  55. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Time for me to crank some blues. I’ll be awake as long as it take the Tylonal PM to kick in. Until then, more beer and whiskey! See you guys tomorrow, unless the PM doesn’t kick in for a while. If that happens, maybe we can talk some politics! LOL!
