Scaled Up Opportunities

The offseason is mercifully upon us and the 49ers have finally introduced their third attempt to replace the highly successful former HC Jim Harbaugh. And their second attempt to replace the highly successful former GM Scot McCloughan. At least neither of them is inheriting baggage above or below them — except of course the noodle at the top of the food chain. Hopefully, this douche will just shut up and pray for the next three years.

New HC Kyle Shanahan comes in fresh off a disastrous lesson in end-game management. Perhaps a phone call to Harbaugh would be enlightening for him. He’ll be first up on the griddle, since he controls the 53 man roster. We’ll give him some friendly advice in this regard.

Assorted Bodies:
37 other entirely replaceable guys

That’s all the help you’re getting from the Outsider, Mr. Shanahan. The rest is up to you.

In a month or so, we’ll get a look at new GM John Lynch. Lynch has formidable cachet in the league, but has never been a scout or a general manager. Should be a fun and exciting couple of months coming along in his life. Lots of CAP room, lots of bodies to replace. We’ll be watching eagerly, Mr. Lynch. Good luck.

NN regular suggested trade #2 to NE for Garapallo, #32,#64.

Nope. Prefer Blaine Gabbert and maybe Cutler for this year. Rely on 2017 and 2018 draft for QBOTF.

  2. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Introducory press conference of Lynch/Shanahan Thurs 1pm

  3. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bakkentom I’d be talking seriously to TN.
    They’re holding 2 RD1 Picks.
Very possible they would want to get in front of JAX too.
I’m totally clueless as to how to predict a brand new Staff at this point.

  4. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

I think Shanahan and Lynch have enough league-wide respect that they’ll be able to attract some decent talent in free agency, guys who wouldn’t have considered joining the 49ers at all before. Of course, these two will have to produce for the effect to last.

  5. WinderNo Gravatar says:

It will be an uphill battle. I wouldn’t know where to start there are so many holes to fill. skeebs, your keeper list is pretty accurate as far as I can see. The dead weight section is just that pretty much useless. Kap is the only one that no matter what has to go, maybe this new regime can salvage a career or two. We have 12 draft picks and 40+ holes to patch, it’s gonna take some time.

  6. WinderNo Gravatar says:

I think I would cut bait with Hyde also, or else he would have to take a pay cut. And if Dawson still wants to play I would sign him up for another year.

  7. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Niners DO NOT want him. He knows that. Get in front of story to save his career. Great point on NYJ and Woody Johnson. CLE has better choices. Lefty airhead should have chose baseball.

  8. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Shanahan is brining in hiring Bobby Turner from the Falcons to be the RBs coach. So what happens to Tom Rathman? Shanahan and Lynch are meeting with Rathman in an effort to keep him on the staff in some capacity.

Keeping Rathman would please most of the Faithful as he’s an icon
and key link to the Walsh era.

    Stay tuned.

  9. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Well…Jed, apparently, is going to save some money on an OCo.
Seems the OCo that couldn’t find a way to manage the clock in the SB and, take a game sealing FG opportunity, will handle the HC/OCo duties for SF.
This should make Jed’s bottom line happy.
Can’t say I’m thrilled with that news.

  10. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Yeh Bullit, running game? Who needs it?
Shanny and Turner sure didn’t think it mattered in the SB, when it was needed the most.

  11. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

    One thing we DO KNOW…
Rathman puts an emphasis on his RBs ability to pass block.
Devonta Freeman sure missed a pretty big assignment in the SB that changed the game huh?

  12. WinderNo Gravatar says:

I looked at a few mocks today and all of them had Mccaffrey going in the 1st rd. One as low as the 18th pick. I would love to get this guy. I wouuld trade down for somebody’s 1st and 2nd picks. and keep our 2nd or use it on Garapolo(sp).

  13. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

TN is holding Picks 5&18 in RD1 Winder.
Strictly on Pick Trade Value, those Picks add up to a move into our 2nd slot.
Whether they covet someone enough to make that deal is the question.

I’d think they would love to have WR Mike Williams to pair with Mariota? Perhaps even RB Leonard Fournette?
Have to see how this plays out.
They also could leapfrog a Division rival, JAX in the process.
Given our situation with new faces in their 1st Draft, it’s hard to predict how aggressive we might be in terms of making those kinds of moves.

  14. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

So the first-timer head coach decides the head coach gig is just an ego title with no work required and what he really wants is to be an offensive coordinator with final say.

Lack of experience and arrogance in charge with no one around who knows any better. Sounds just like what you’d expect to find running team York.

And just what I’d expect from Shanahan. At least if he was paired with a GM who’d been around the block a time or two he might have a chance of avoiding just a few of the most obvious mistakes. But, hey, what fun is that? Those Niner fans will welcome anything thrown in their face no matter how much it stinks and they’ll happily pay more for the privilege.

Now they’re talking about giving them three years to produce results. Not including the last three I guess.

  15. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

    Hey NJ49er,

That head-up-your-ass protection on that play was one of the reasons it had the look of being fixed. Freeman’s individual effort there looked like a bad fake play.

  16. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

NoFear it’s beyond explanation to me.
The fix was in, (for me) when Shanny/Turner decided it wasn’t any fun to run anymore, with a FG in their pocket, to put themselves up by 2 scores.
They literally handed that game to Brady IMO.
And now they’re considering a move to supplant Rathman?
There’s nothing new here, but yet another roll of the dice, by Tweeter and The Money Man.
While they continue to change, (destroy) everything around them, they fail miserably to see what is obvious to the rest of us.
    They FUK’N SUCK.

  17. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

    Yes, they’ve achieved nirvana perhaps.
They brought in fresh faces with good track records, (while also having no experience), to run the show on their own.
    Wanna look brilliant?
Hire less qualified people who won’t answer back I guess?
Harbaugh answered back plenty, while winning football games.
    That didn’t work.
So, Jed opted to change the narrative to ‘winning with class’.

    Straight from Marketing 101.
When your product doesn’t meet expectations, repackage it.
    Hey Jed.
    Fuk You.

  18. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

How many times does this nitwit need to offer millions to perspective new hires only to have them say thanks, but, no thanks?
    News Flash Jed.
NO ONE, with any NFL Cred, wants to work for you.
You’re lucky these 2 guys are risk takers.
They’ll be richer for their sacrifices (I hope).

  19. bullitNo Gravatar says:

As I have said before changes were needed.
Ifeel 100% better witgh Lynch/Shanahan than I did with Baalke/Kelly.

Baalke/Kelly were clueless especially sticking with lame duck Kap at QB. For me that was a mortal sin staying with the status quo which was losing to a record 13 games in row rather than looking to the future.

The roster was Baalke’s responsibility and he has made it a total failure. Just look at the upcoming turnover when Lynch cleans house as to affirm the failures of Baalke.

  20. bullitNo Gravatar says:

No greater evidence of Baalke’s failure to judge talent than AJ Jenkins.

In the history of the NFL no WR has been taken in the first round that produced zero catches for the team that drafted him.

Having whiffed at Jenkins caused Baalke to be gun shy in drafting receivers. Receivers Baalke drafted just can’t get open and are non productive.

  21. bullitNo Gravatar says:

I’m very interested for those who are criticizing these hires
who they would have chosen for GM and for HC?

In your opinion who would be the better choice?

  22. WinderNo Gravatar says:

I like the hires just fine and am looking forward to some positive changes. I don’t like the idea at all of Shanny being both HC and OC. I don’t see how that will work. We need as many of qualified coaches that we can get. I don’t care WTF we call em. How is he supposed to take care of the offense and the whole team. Like I said earlier somewhere ‘even Walsh had an OC.’

  23. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

Yeah Winder agree we need an OC for our HC. This could be Shanny’s big mistake. Do you think the SB would have fared better w/o an OC? Prepare for rookie mistakes.

  24. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

People here and on Chuck’s bitching about “Who” would coach the Niners, and there are only a few of them, that do not offer up some candidates are simply exercising their mouths. Instead of being helpful. Same with acquiring players, etc. You need to get specific as I did with the Shanahan call. Stop fearing being wrong once in awhile, jeez.

  25. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

Correction = now appears Mike LaFleur will be our oc and Matt La Fleur will be oc for the Rams

  26. WinderNo Gravatar says:

That’s a lot of LaFleur’s. Phil- where did you read that.

  27. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

IOL of Joshua Garnett/Zane Beadles/Kevin Zeitler. Only 26, will he be a fit for KS system.

  28. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

And “some people” are ridiculous as naive children when it comes to their football teams. Inability to notice the forest when surrounded by too many trees.

All youse who cheered every new coach and player signed in the last fifty years are wondering who would be better than whoever gets picked by York for the job? That’s just laughable. The answer, “ANYBODY” would be right more often than not just given York’s track record.

FYI, I’d give Shanahan a shot, even though I think he’s an arrogant bastard, that doesn’t disqualify him from having success, and I’d be willing to give Lynch a try at GMing, just not both together.

Two first-timers are looking at a Keystone Kops trial and error period. It can’t be helped. The best teacher is experience and the Niners now have none.

Patton or a newly minted hot-shot know-it-all ring knocker?

  29. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

York has cover with a SB blessed HC. KS will stay long here, no matter what. York needs to research Los Gatos bars.

  30. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

    If the shoe fits…

  31. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

    From Rotoworld:

    Matt LaFleur – C – Rams
Rams hired Matt LaFleur as offensive coordinator.

Winder we are getting Mike LaFleur not Matt (brothers) per numerous reports. And there was an erroneous report as many have been confused by this

  32. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Shanahan might have immediately gotten on York’s shit list at the presser: “… dream come true, talk about Bill Walsh, George Seifert, Jim Harbagh.”

I guess he didn’t get the message that Harbaugh has been erased from the building.

  33. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

Our ace genius in the owner’s box hired the GM & the HC and while an experienced GM would be better we have what we have. So yes as I said above we can expect rookie mistakes. We should keep our expectations low, no?

  34. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

Wow Skeebs that would be a quick fall from grace. Hopefully York will have embraced the Niner legacy? Well Lynch and Shanny will quit together if York hasn’t

  35. WinderNo Gravatar says:

Yorky needs all the good PR he can get. He will just have to grin and bear it. I really don’t have a clue if our new HC/GM will be any good or not. I really respect Lynch for what he did on the football field. He is HOF caliber and he is smart. He may be a rookie right now but I would rather have him in there than any of the last three candidates standing. It is a brand new start as far as I am concerned. These guys had nothing to do with our past disasters.

  36. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Niners hire Martin Mayhew as a Senior Personnel Exec.
He was the GM at Detroit who drafted Matthew Stafford and Suh.
Was the GM at Detroit for 8 years.

First year GM Lynch has a very strong support staff with Peters and Mayhew having extensive personnel experience.

Mayhew is a key hire that will help Lynch giving him sound advice.

  37. bullitNo Gravatar says:

IIRC you were on board with the hiring of Mike Nolan who was also a first time HC and was also given the title of GM.
    First time HC and GM?

You were down with that. So what’s changed?

  38. WinderNo Gravatar says:

Keep on hiring, I don’t really know what a senior personel exec does but it’s starting to look good. This is probably all Lynch.

  39. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

Where the hell did I see the story on Mike LaFleur coming on as our OC? Can’t find it now, damn. Is it true?

  40. WinderNo Gravatar says:

phil- I am confused too. I think he might be coming in as a QB coach. Or, maybe that was his brother, I dunno.

  41. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

“Another Falcons assistant joining Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco” NBC Sports: ProFootballTalk

Via Alex Marvez of the Sporting News , “offensive assistant Mike LaFleur is going to San Francisco as Shanahan’s wide receivers coach.”

Wide receivers coach I guess Winder. Guess you’re right about KS being his own OC? Like you said this should be an upgrade over our previous coaches after Harbaugh

  42. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    More on Martin Mayhew

“The San Francisco 49ers announced on Thursday that the team has named Martin Mayhew senior personnel executive.
“My relationship with Martin spans more than two decades, and in that time I have developed a tremendous amount of respect for him both personally and professionally,” said 49ers General Manager John Lynch. “Not only do we gain a tremendous talent evaluator, but also a highly experienced front office executive. Martin has sat in the seat as a general manager and his experience will play an integral role in helping us locate the type of football player we want representing this organization both on the field and in the community. I am excited to have him as a teammate once again.”

Mayhew joins the 49ers after spending the 2016 season as the director of football operations/special projects with the New York Giants. In his role with the Giants, he worked all aspects of the salary cap, CBA compliance and player contract negotiations.”

Perhaps he was brought in to provide a buffer between Marathe and the GM?

  43. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

So, you’re saying you have every reason to hope Shanahan is as successful as Nolan?

The Niners should have hired the GM first in both cases.

McCloughan did the job of a GM even though Nolan had the final word on personnel and he was already an experienced personnel guy with a solid rep working under Ron Wolf and Mike Holmgren.

  44. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

John Lynch explains why his daughter cried when he took the 49ers job =

“I think the toughest one – I haven’t told this yet to the media – all my kids took it really well,” Lynch said. “They were shocked but they took it really well. My 9-year-old started bawlin’ and she’s not that girl. She’s the one that was always happy and she was crying and I said, ‘What’s wrong Leah? Is there some nervous anxiety about moving?’ And she said, ‘No daddy,’ and she was sobbing. And I said, ‘What’s wrong?’ And she said, ‘The 49ers are horrible.’

“So I said, ‘Well, I think that’s why they hired your daddy,'” added Lynch.

  45. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Jeez, a 9 yr old girl. The house that Jed and Trent built.

  46. bullitNo Gravatar says:

When Tomsula was hired your gut told you it was a joke, a sham.
Last year the hiring of Kelly was a surprise. Big name but a stopgap. I was willing to give him a chance but Chip failed to adapt and seemed to expect the team to adapt to his scheme.
Not making any changes to his approach doomed him in my eyes and signaled the NFL was too sophisticated for his college scheme.

The Lynch/Shanahan hirings have the same feel as Harbaugh’s hiring. Lynch as a first time GM is not a problem because he has 3 guys under him where Mayhew served as a GM and two guys in Peters and Gamble who are solid #2’s. Don’t see any difference in hiring a #2 to be your GM or Lynch with a solid staff.
In Shanahan they have a very young coach who has 9 years experience as the OC and has been preparing to be a HC for several years now.

I suggested he was a worthy candidate 2 years ago to replace Harbaugh and since then he has enhance his resume.
We’ll just have to see how this plays out.

  47. WinderNo Gravatar says:

I gotta admit when we hired Nolan I was really pleased. I liked his dad and figured if anyone knew what the Niners were about it would be him. What doomed him was Alex Smith and his soft defensive schemes. When we got Turner I also thought it might work out, but once he left it was all down hill. We never got the right coaching staff or players in place after that. My guess is that was mostly Nolan’s doing. Just like then I feel good about our new coaches and really there is nowhere to go but up.

  48. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Justin Smith on the 49ers: “One of their biggest mistakes was not keeping Vic (Fangio) there. I don’t know how you let people like that go.”

Still talk of Fangio coming baqck in 2018 when his Bears contract is up.

  49. WinderNo Gravatar says:

    phil- nice article on Young.

  50. WinderNo Gravatar says:

Now I am waiting to see what they do for defensive coaches. I read the bio’s on the new offensive coaches and except for Turner they are mostly young with lots of college experience. I didn’t recognize any of the names. Which really doesn’t mean a thing.

  51. bullitNo Gravatar says:

You wonder if they are going to hire a placeholder DC and bring Fangio back when his deal is up next year.

Seems like they would not publicly admit to asking for a Fangio interview unless there was some interest from Vic’s side.

  52. WinderNo Gravatar says:

    bullit- lets hope.

  53. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Per Maiocco, Tom Rathman won’t return to 49ers in 2017.

  54. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Yep – Just saw that Skeebs – New chapter in 9er history is upon us.

  55. WinderNo Gravatar says:

I guess there wasn’t room for 2 rb coaches. I liked Rathman as a player and figured he was a pretty good coach. But, the fact is our running game has sucked since Gore left. Thanks to Baalky and his OL draft picks I don’t think we were able to get our running game up to speed. Letting Iupati go didn’t help either.

  56. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Frank made those OLs look good too Winder.
Tough to replace a pair of throwbacks like 44 & 21.
I’m going to remain as optimistic as possible, during this phase of ‘change’.

  57. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Best wishes to any of you in or around the Oroville Dam.
    Be safe.
That doesn’t sound like a very good situation by any stretch.

  58. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Living downstream from a dam is not the greatest of ideas especially in earthquake country.
Hope for the best that they can fix the problem.

  59. WinderNo Gravatar says:

yeah, over the years the maintenance guys must have taken some long lunch breaks. The time to repair that stuff is during the droughts.

  60. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

So far the water level is dropping 4″/hour. The small margin for error could be wiped out with more heavy rains. Yep the maintenance was not performed because the money diverted by politicians. Think high speed rail boondoggle, etc.

  61. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“Robert Saleh will be hired as the 49ers’ new defensive coordinator. Saleh spent the last three years as linebackers coach of the Jaguars.”

  62. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

He almost made it, but … “Aldon Smith Under Investigation for Domestic Incident.”

  63. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Riddick seems to have done a 180° degree turn on the 9ers’ GM situation.
Miffed at being passed over I wonder?
Realized (perhaps) that working for Jed was like sticking one’s head into the guillotine?
Can’t think this guy has too much credibility, if his nose is out of joint over this.

  64. bullitNo Gravatar says:

If Saleh is hired as the DC it signals the Niners switching to the 4-3 defense as their base.
The Jags ran a 4-3 under Gus Bradley and Saleh will most likely implement the same defense.

  65. WinderNo Gravatar says:

After reading this I know for a fact I don’t know squat about the X’s and O’s in football.
