Rumor Mill Times

This will be a bad year to be a free agent. With the shrinking of the salary cap, free agents will be joined in the unemployed section by a lot of veterans cut by teams to fit under the cap. That’s more competition and less money teams will have to shower on the free agents. That means a lot of players will be signing one year deals this season, hoping next year the money will flow more abundantly again.

It also means a guy like Trent Williams might be disappointed that no team out there is interested in a $20 million OT this offseason. Perhaps leading Williams to do another one year deal with the 49ers and take another crack at FA next year. Ditto for CB Jason Verrett.

That’s the good news. The bad news is it’s entirely possible I could be full of shit.

In other news, the Rams continued their habit of mortgaging the future to correct their past mistakes. They began this questionable strategy ii 2016 by acquiring the right to draft Jared Goff and continued it this year by getting rid of him and, most especially, his contract. Whether Matt Stafford is an upgrade remains to be seen. Goff has lost four straight to the Niners, so we’ll see next year if Stafford can at least break that string.

With so many coaches riding out of town on the backs of the 49ers’ recent success, mostly from the defensive side of the ball, it’s tough to gauge how the team will respond next year, especially under the leadership of new DC DeMeco Ryans. How Ryans performs might be the key to the whole season.

Meanwhile, we’ll continue to watch the rumors fly endlessly, mostly involving QB Jimmy Garoppolo being replaced by one guy or another, or by a draft day pick should we get to the end of April and Jimmy’s fate is still dangling in the wind.

Kittle wants Jimmy as the QB

“But tight end George Kittle was on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football on Tuesday and once again endorsed his current QB.

“I still believe in Jimmy G. I think he’s an incredible quarterback. I think he can lead us to another Super Bowl. I think we can win a Super Bowl with him,” Kittle said, via NFL Media. “I can’t even talk enough about his leadership skills on and off the field. I feel like I’ve answered this question about 200 times now since I last talked to you guys after last Super Bowl, but I’ll keep dying on the sword because I think Jimmy G’s a fantastic quarterback. He’s got an amazing release, got a great arm and a great touch. So I’m happy to have Jimmy G as my quarterback and I know that we can win with him.”

Kittle dismissed the rumors of the 49ers potentially moving on from Garoppolo as just offseason talk and chatter saying, “What else is there to talk about except our handsome quarterback, Jimmy G?”

Watson is far too expensive even though he is a major talent. It’s hard to tell if Jimmy regressed or was just hurt most of the year. The FO should know one way or another if he’s broke or not. I have enjoyed watching 49er football again starting with the arrival of Shanny and Lynch. I have a good feeling that they will be competitive and fun to watch again this year. We have a team that believes in themselves.

    Winder

The QB position is hurt, not broken. Jimmy tried to do a Alex Smith and play through an obvious injury which affected his play.
Alex tried to play through a bad throwing shoulder because Nolan said he wasn’t hurt.

A lot of people point to the Super Bowl and Jimmy missing on a 40 yard pass to Sanders and the loss is all his fault as if these passes are automatic.

Lynch/Shanahan need to shore up a few other positions to make this team a contender. Niners should not mortgage their future for a QB because they already have one.

  4. winderNo Gravatar says:

bullit- i don’t think he’s broken either. I am pretty sure we could win it all if he gets back to 2017 form. He was dynamic for those last 5 games. I have a feeling a lot of it is on Shanny not letting him improvise. But, on the other hand defenses know not to let him rollout to far and they have been cutting him off. We have to be more creative in our play calling. All teams gotta do is watch tape.

  5. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Now that Stafford is off the market the new target of the day is Aaron Rodgers

Rodgers just turned 37 in Dec and no doubt is a future HOF QB. Realistically he has a shelf life of 2-5 years or one serious injury to retirement. Also Rodgers has won 1 Super Bowl but his record is 11-9
which hasn’t gotten him to play in multiple Super Bowls.
Yet some would mortgage the future and weaken the team to have Rodgers Cost must be reasonable but do not decimate the team for a QB in his autumn.

  6. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Given the nature of the developments and QB speculation heading into the Draft, Matt Ryan and Sam Darnold come to mind as potential options should we see fit to obtain something for Jimmy.
If I were being tasked with Drafting a QB at 12, Mac Jones would be my choice.
If asked to wait, I’d shoot for Trask, perhaps RD2?

  7. bullitNo Gravatar says:

What type of QB does Shanahan favor to run his offense?

The new age QB Lamar Jackson/ Kylar Murray run first threat from the Kapernick school of QBing.

The hybrid Patrick Mahomes / Deshaun Watson/ Russell Wilson mobile QB

The traditional pocket passer Tom Brady/ Aaron Rodgers/Drew Brees type that Jimmy G, Goff and Stafford might best fit with style wise.

  8. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Wai until the 2022 draft and if you need a QB this is the guy you go all in on.

Sam Howell QB North Carolina who looks like the mad bomber with all these deep throws.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkyaLu8e6Ko

NJ keep him on your radar.

  9. winderNo Gravatar says:

I would still draft a QB this year preferably rd 2. I have a feeling we trade both Mullens and the Beater before the draft.

  10. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Gruden caught tampering in trying to recruit Sherman on air in a podcast.

Maybe the Niners can get a third round pick from the Raiduhs?

  11. winderNo Gravatar says:

Frank Gore said he wants to play for the 49ers in 2021.
Gore, an unrestricted free agent entering his 17th season, was enthused about returning to the team that drafted him during the second George W. Bush administration. “Oh, oh, I’d come back fast,” Gore said. “Man, I’d love to wear that No. 21 jersey one more time. If that was to happen, that would definitely be my last year, if I could come back and sign with the 49ers.” Gore, 37, averaged 3.5 yards per carry on 187 carries for Adam Gase’s Jets in 2020. He’d have little chance to getting any run in a crowded San Francisco backfield.

  12. bullitNo Gravatar says:

RIP Charlie Kruger DT from the Kezar days.
I was privileged to see him play and he was a tough guy.
It just seemed his helmet was too small .
He died living 84 years and lived In Clayton after his Niner days.

  13. winderNo Gravatar says:

Krueger was tough as nails. A 49er who inspired a lot of young fans. Myself included. RIP

Lynch finally gets into the HOF.

  15. winderNo Gravatar says:

    It’s about time

  16. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Would you make this trade that is put out there by Todd McShay of ESPN?

“In Todd McShay’s latest 2021 mock draft for ESPN, that’s exactly what Pace does.

McShay has the Bears trading up to No. 12 overall for Alabama’s Mac Jones.

Four quarterbacks went in the first four picks, and in this scenario, the Bears didn’t fully address quarterback via free agency or trade. That means it’s now or never for Chicago and it pulls the trigger on a move up the board in the middle of the first round. So what gets it done? To land the No. 12 pick from San Francisco, the Bears would have to send their own first-rounder (No. 20) and a second-rounder (No. 52), probably along with a 2022 first- or second-rounder.

This is more than the traditional trade-value chart expects, and whether that ’22 pick is of the Day 1 or Day 2 variety would depend on how desperate Chicago is for the last true Round 1 QB still out there. Niners GM John Lynch could maybe throw a midrounder back to the Bears to sweeten the deal and get it done.”

Bears giving up 2 first round picks and a second to move up 8 spots. Awfully tempting.

  17. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Depends on what happens with Deshaun Bullit.
I’d like to have the option on Mac at 12.
Extra Picks always good in my book but, we need a long term answer at QB too.
Though Trask wouldn’t be a bad option with the extra Picks.

  18. winderNo Gravatar says:

I trust McShay and Kiper just hair more than I trust Republicans. Which is not at all. Pretty sure if there is a guy either Shanny or Lynch wants at 12 they will pull the trigger. We do need more picks but we also need quality players. I figure overall the FO is batting .350 on all the picks since 2017. We need to do better this year.

  19. bullitNo Gravatar says:

These are the slow news days of the offseason and constant rumors keep popping up. It seems like every QB except Josh Allen and Mahomes is available. Favorite game being played is the Quarterback Shuffle.

The latest is Russell Wilson. This might just be the agent churning for a new contract but the speculation has begun.

  20. bullitNo Gravatar says:

You have to wonder what is going on with the Houston Texans who granted JJ Watt his release today. No sure if waivers come into play or if it’s going to be a free for all.

  21. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Connect the dots between Demeco Ryans and JJ now.
Consider the importance of Deshaun and Bosa in the game of Trade costs.
Add deep DE class in the Draft.

    Stir thoroughly.
    QB for Bosa?

  22. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Consider the loss of multiple 1st RD Picks, (Deshaun) then, add the additional Comp Picks we’ve got coming, Saleh, Mayhew and FA losses to come, along with Jimmy as a valuable asset as well.

In a NY minute, I’m pulling the trigger to get Deshaun.

  23. winderNo Gravatar says:

I don’t want to give up Bosa. I would give up 3 1st rders and Jimmy but not Bosa. We should have figured a way to pay DeFo.

  24. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

I wouldn’t want to part with Bosa either.
    However….
If given the choice between upgrading the QB position and temporarily weakening the pass rush I woudn’t hesitate.
Picking up JJ on a short term deal and Drafting a pair of DEs this April wouldn’t be a horrible option.

Bosa coming off an ACL repair leaves me concerned. He’ll need help regardless of his surgical concerns and year long layoff.

For me, the QB position is our most glaring weakness.
If Deshaun is actually an option, I’d be pretty disappointed in Lynch if he didn’t take that shot.

  25. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Houston in looking to sucker a team into trading their future for Watson.
Jimmy G is capable of going 13-3 and getting the team to the Super Bowl. When healthy the QB position is not a weakness. Time to spend draft capital on a capable backup. Mullens hit his ceiling two years ago and plateaued.

Trading Bosa is a non starter plus the draft picks in the package.

Houston can go fleece a desperate team but the Niners are not that team.

  26. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Upgrade might already be on the team in Rosen. Shanahan has the opportunity to mold him into a starter that can challenge Jimmy in the future which would be ideal.
Rosen didn’t cost anything and Beathard and Mullens need a change in sceneary.

  27. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Houston is a train wreck in terms of FO competency Bullit.
A proven franchise QB in his PRIME?
Hard to ignore in my book.
We’re a perfect fit for his talent and, he likely puts us over the top.

Not to say Rosen or Darnold, or another option couldn’t but…
    I’d make Deshaun Watson a 9er in a heartbeat.
Our window won’t last long given the Contracts we have coming up.
Swap Jimmy money now if able.

  28. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Peter King has talked to the Houston owner and he wants to start at Sam Darnold and 4 Number 1 picks from the Jest.
Not giving up Bosa or Warner and three #1s for Watson.

This past year Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Rodgers and Russell Wilson couldn’t put the team on their backs and win the Super Bowl.
Brady contributed to the victory but the Tampa Bay defense neutralized
Mahomes and made the game one sided.

The true weakness of the team is the defensive backfield and they need to keep Verret and K’wuan Williams and draft some help. That’s not happening if you give away your next 3 first round picks.

Again I would not cripple the team to go this route.

  29. bullitNo Gravatar says:

This CB is a third day prospect that has some attention from the Niners

    https://currently.att.yahoo.com/sports/49ers-stand-meeting-minnesota-cb-031632776.html

Also Jags just hired Tom Gamble to their Personnel Dept. Baalke getting the old gang together.

  30. winderNo Gravatar says:

I still wouldn’t give up any players in the Watson sweepstakes except Jimmy. Not so sure giving up 3 #1’s would bury us for very long or very deep. Watson would move this team up and down the field.

  31. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    From THE ATHLETIC

A local QB flying under the radar who can be had as a 4th or 5th round pick

    ” Davis Mills, Stanford (6-4, 225 pounds)
Duluth, Ga. (Greater Atlanta Christian); Age: 22.52

A two-year starter at Stanford, Mills was a starter in offensive coordinator Tavita Pritchard’s pro-style scheme, splitting his snaps from under center and from the shotgun. The No. 1 quarterback in the 2017 recruiting class (ahead of Tua Tagovailoa), his college career was interrupted by a left knee injury from high school and then a COVID-shortened 2020 season. He finished with basically one full year of starting experience.

A loose, well-built passer, Mills shows the ability to scan, operate from various platforms and throw with touch/anticipation. He is one of the best middle-of-the-field passers in the draft, but he needs time to grow and eliminate the “what are you doing?” plays from his tape. Overall, Mills is still learning the throws he should and shouldn’t make, but he has size and mobility and delivers a very catchable ball with the field-reading skills to develop into an NFL backup (and possibly more), although the health of his left knee is a strong concern.”

He is a project that can grow into a QB who can challenge in a few years.

  32. winderNo Gravatar says:

Read in the Athletic this morning that this years draft will absolutely be a crap shoot. Only 3 front office members at any pro day. No personal interviews. They are gonna have to go on previous tape and hope they don’t pick nutjobs. They can have phone interviews so I guess that’s something.

  33. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Unofficially the new salary cap will be $5 mil over last years
ending speculation that it might be lower due to pandemic.

    https://www.yahoo.com/sports/salary-cap-floor-provides-packers-142859712.html

  34. winderNo Gravatar says:

bullit- I think last years cap was close to 200 mill. What they are saying is that this years cap is gonna be 5 mill over the estimated 175 mill cap. i could be wrong on that.

  35. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

The Dee Ford contact terms aren’t working out well for them either.
Reasons why we say hindsight is always 20/20.
Dee has been a major FO mistake.

  36. winderNo Gravatar says:

NJ- Sad thing is we are stuck no matter what we do with Ford. From what i read the only real hope to save some money is if he is healed and plays or to restructure his contract move some of the guaranteed money into future singing bonus. I think my reading comprehension is a little weak at the moment.

  37. winderNo Gravatar says:

bullit- just reread your 8:01 post. and you had it right all along.

  38. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Winder

Actually we are both right. I was talking about the projection of $175 mil and last season’s cap was $195 mil close to $200 mil.

looks like they’ll have $20-25 mil to spend unless they redo some contracts which Parag always manages.

  39. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Adam Peters has been promoted to Assistant GM.

Also the Niners have salary cap to spend.13 NFL teams are currently over the cap so things could be worse.
