Roster Massage

Six games into the season and nine teams are spinning their wheels at 3-3. That’s good enough for first place in the NFC East now and maybe even all season long. Two teams are a perfect 6-0, Denver and Kansas City, and three teams have yet to win so much as a single game — the Giants, Jaguars, and Buccaneers.

The 49ers have some new faces at practice today — Quinton Dial, Mario Manningham, Tank Carradine, and Eric Wright. None of these guys is likely to see action until after the BYE week, so we’ll have two weeks to decide which four guys currently on the team will get their walking papers to make room. My own early candidates for dismissal are Marlon Moore, Nnamdi Asomugha, Bubba Ventrone, and LB Jermaine Cunningham

We’ll also probably see Aldon Smith return to the team in the next week or two, but it’s anybody’s guess what happens with him at this point or even whether he’s in game ready shape. A month of peeling potatoes, weeping, sharing, looking at terrifying videos of what alcohol is doing to his innards — he might not have stayed in pass rush condition.

Before the season began, Arizona HC Bruce Arians pooh-poohed the supposed superiority of the 49ers and Seahawks in the NFC West. The NFL was thoughtful enough to cram both of these teams down his throat in a back-to-back Sunday/Thursday combo this week. The Cardinals were shoved off the field in an 18 play pounding in the fourth quarter against the 49ers Sunday, and now have to mend body and soul by Thursday night to take another physical whipping from Seattle. There won’t be much left of Arians’ team by Friday morning.

The NFL Trade deadline is Tuesday, October 29, which occurs during the 49ers BYE week. There’s been speculation that RB LaMichael James might get dealt before then. The team denies LMJ is on the block and says it has great plans for him. When these plans will be implemented is left unsaid. As we’ve learned in the past, what the team says has nothing whatsoever to do with fact or reality. It’s clear from recent games that the 49ers have gone back to their straight ahead power running game, ditching the read-option/pistol, which was more suited to LMJ getting some face time.

For those keeping track of the “Who Got The Better Of Us?” department: AJ Jenkins: 1 catch for 6 yards; Jon Baldwin: 3 catches for 28 yards. This is turning into a rout. So is the other part of the KC/49ers deal, as the Chiefs are two wins away from bumping our draft haul up a notch to a second rounder in 2014. Interestingly, Alex Smith has now started nine straight games without getting beat. Can anyone stop this victory machine?

AJ Jenkins almost had a catch this week. The throw was high but catchable. Even though he was open, and he could not make the catch that had some degree of difficulty to it.

Something tells me Tank will be playing this Sunday. Dial too if Dorsey can’t go.

  3. BergerNo Gravatar says:

The one player that should be most ready to play is Eric Wright since he is not coming off an injury.

What’s interesting is this week’s Titan game, although back East starts in the afternoon time slot
    of 1:25 pm PDT.
The following week’s game with the Jags in London is a 10am kickoff but that is moot because
    it’ll be 6pm London Time.
After that only the Tampa Bay game is a 10am kickoff.
I bring this up because only a few years ago the Niners would lose every 10am East Coast kickoff
and now it’s become a non factor although the NFL schedule maker
has helped by only giving the Niners 2 of these early start times.

Funny, Alex Smith is #2 in winning percentage since the start of the 2011 season. Behind only Peyton Manning. And ahead of the future ex-president.
And save the #2 jokes, Dennis. I’m waaay ahead of you.

Yeah, my hope is we get those guys into the DL rotation as soon as possible. Manningham would be nice to see as well.

Maiocco thinks the 49ers will activate Purcells. I forgot about this guy. I remember he played well in pre-season. I commented about him a few times. He was taking on double teams fairly easy. I thought it was possible he would make the opening roster. He is on the practice squad right now.

Praise for the tackles, Lemonier, VD. And Justin’s best pass pressure game since before the injury.

This Irsay/Peyton Twitter war is getting pretty interesting.

  10. BergerNo Gravatar says:

I think I hurt Del’s feelings. Too bad, it would be good hear his take on the Irsay/Peyton ordeal!
Of course, it is possible he is just drying out!

    TN has a good Defense.
Our best friend would be RFitz starting at QB.
Another of those games you can’t take lightly.
Especially with CJ toting the rock and, our DLine beaten up.
Should be a good fight on Sunday.

Wouldn’t count too heavily on the NFI guys at this point.
The 2 Rooks have had no practice time yet.
Manningham is curious, Wright might get a sniff, if the game score allows it.
Team has a few weeks to tweak the 53.
Sets up nicely for us too.
A BYE and the Trade Deadline land in our lap.

it would be huge to have another capable WR / target ! kap and vernon look to have clicked ! now we need another WR opposite boldin

  16. robNo Gravatar says:

considering dorsey’s injury , i hope tank can play soon too ! we need all the bodies we can get up front !

  17. robNo Gravatar says:

great to see lemonier out there making plays so soon! i had some hopes for him when we drafted him !

    The usual great job.

Funny stuff from comedian Bill Burr on Seahags. He has a potty mouth.

  20. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

The 49ers waived tight end/ wide receiver Chris Harper.

  21. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Sounds like it is time to add a D lineman?

  22. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Wouldn’t surprise me if the Chefs
    claim Harper.
If he is projected as a TE, KC is hurting having just put their rookie TE Kelce on IR.

  23. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Cardinals keep trying to run at Red Bryant and are getting nothing. Go to the other side! Also, the Hawks got an interception on a blatant interference that wasn’t called. Typical for Seattle. I wonder why they interfere so often and rarely get called?

  24. rtfireflyNo Gravatar says:

Stop the presses! AZ got a field goal! They’re on the scoreboard!
    Now a TD and a 2 pointer?????

    What planet am I on??

  25. rtfireflyNo Gravatar says:

    1 pointer…

The excitement was too much for me.

  26. rtfireflyNo Gravatar says:

    3 more!!!!???

    Wowsy! Go Redbirds!

  27. rtfireflyNo Gravatar says:

    Back to normal… Hawk TD.

    Time to go watch Heidi.

Skeebs, Chuck got his info on Nate from me on his blog.

I’m taking the Hawks -4 and the over…

There’s always that slim chance of Seattle’s charter crashing into the Pacific on their flight home. Otherwise, we and everyone else are playing second fiddle in the NFC West. We’re sitting so far behind Seattle in the NFC West Philharmonic that I can’t even see Leonard Bernstein. Yo, Lenny! Wave your baton a little higher so the people in the back can see ya.

  30. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

John Schneider is the GM of the Seahawks? Did he hire Daisy Duke to be his secretary? Here’s a sobering thought: Catherine Bach is going to be 60 next year. Where the hell has all the time gone?
    Young QBs Rankings
    1. Andrew Luck
    2. Russell Wilson
    4. Kap and RG Knee. And that gap between 2 and 4 might even be wider. I’m talking 60 yo Catherine Bach vagina wide. But don’t lie. You’d still do her, too.
