The 49ers finally halted their six year opening game magic by getting they guts stomped by the Carolina Panthers, even though the Panthers played poorly themselves. Double ouch.
And so begins the Kyle Shanahan Era, three years into the Post Harbaugh Error.
The Niner defense had no pass rush and no sacks, but their run defense was vastly improved from the epic disaster of last year. First round draft pick Solomon Thomas was mostly invisible, along with recently elevated to elite status Tank Carradine. Elvis Dumervil actually WAS invisible, failing to show up anywhere on the stat sheet.
The Panther defense was a bit more betterly. They sacked Brian Hoyer four times, forced a fumble, make an interception, and most importantly stuffed the Niners on 4 of the 5 times they went for it on fourth down. These stuffings led directly to at least a thirteen point swing in the game. Two field goals for the Panthers and seven less points for the 49ers.
The Marquis Goodwin who looked like a terror in preseason reverted back to the Goodwin that existed on his previous team. Maybe he’ll catch a long pass, maybe he won’t. Yesterday, he didn’t. Dropping one that landed right in his breadbasket.
On the plus side for the locals, RB Carlos Hyde looked decent and made it through the entire game without getting injured. Perhaps next week. QB Hoyer looked okay, not great, not bad, not enough.
Then there was the offensive line, specifically the two guards. They completely lived up to the suspicions that they were completely inept. It looks like another year of 49er QBs fearing for their lives.
Some would say Shanahan was foolhardy in attempting the two fourth down conversions near midfield which led directly to Carolina scores. Some would applaud the bravado. And some would notice this gung-ho approach was the same one that cost his previous team a Super Bowl trophy. And that about sums up the somes.
“Seahawks favored against 49ers Sunday by more points (13) than they scored Sunday at Green Bay (9).”
Sheesh.
Good and bad from CSNBA:
“On offense, Zane Beadles had lowest PFF grade of any guard through Sunday’s games in Week 1. Beadles allowed a quarterback sack – a game-turning sack-strip against Carolina defensive lineman Wes Horton. He also surrendered a quarterback hit and four hurries while in pass protection.
“The 49ers’ best performance on the offensive line came from right tackle Trent Brown, according to PFF. Brown did not allow a quarterback pressure on 41 pass-blocking snaps.”
“Reuben Foster will miss time with high ankle sprain.”
From the pics I’ve seen, the stadium was barely half full at the start of the game and only about 25% full at the start of the second half.
“Just as everyone expected: after NFL’s first Sunday of season, the two top-rated QBs are Alex Smith and Jared Goff.”
Looks like Foster will miss 4-6 weeks with the high ankle sprain.
When they put Foster on the cart I thought he might be gone for the season with a knee injury
Having Foster for the last 10 games is still a plus.
Goodwin’s drop, Foster being carted off and Tartt basically whiffing
on his tackle (he simply had to push him out of bounds) set the tone that this might be a long afternoon.
Newton tried to keep the Niners in the game missing a couple of TDs to wide open receivers.
Not sure I like a female play by play announcer, especially teamed with sexy Rexy Ryan. She better keep her toes covered in the booth.
Just how bad is Beadles?
Pretty bad.

I’d say Beadles ain’t long for the NFL. He was pretty much toast when Baalke brought him here last year.
“Packers releasing Ricky Jean Francois.”
Couldn’t sneak him through waivers: “Panthers have claimed former 49ers OT John Theus.”
What would you consider to be a success for tomorrow’s game? I don’t think victory is a very reasonable expectation. If we start with the idea that this year is mostly a preseason/ practice season, then what skills do we want to see develop this week?
My suggestions:
1 – Interior line competence. Yes, Seattle’s D-line will get their pressures, but I’d like to see them have to earn their penetration, not just be invited in by Los Tres Matadors.
2 – Goodwin improves his catching. This might be a bit much to ask, given his history, but delivering on one or two long throws would be a positive sign.
3 – Limited Mental mistakes in the secondary. Let’s not let anyone run free this week, okay?
If I can see those things, I kind of don’t care what the score is. It’s been a long time since I expected a win.
I don’t think we were favored in any games last year, so you’d have to go back to 2015 for that.
And another Baalke boy goes packing: “49ers promote CB Asa Jackson to the active roster from the team’s practice squad and waive CB Keith Reaser.”
I would like to see at least one sack for all the #1’s we have. I would like to see our run game get some production and hopefully Hoyer can stay on his feet for most of the game.
Seattle has probably an even worse O-line than the Niners, so maybe you’ll get one of your wishes. The other two seem unlikely.
If the Niners are remotely competitive in Seattle, it will be a big step forward.
Seahawks oline made Packers dline look great last week. How long will RT survive.
George Fant LT lost in preseason. Luke Joeckel shown he was overdrafted by JAX and cannot handle LT. Neither can the replacement.
RW makes their O click. Big dollars at risk on every pass play.
What would SEA give up for Staley. SEA coughed up a 2nd for a young Sheldon Richardson. Staley for their big mouth CB?

Good stuff from CAR game.
Season off to good start. Reuben Foster out 4 to 6 weeks with a non-threatening career injury. Armstrong not a good backup. So versus the pass all 3 LB’s easy money against great OC’s.
Did not expect Ram’s to gel this quick with McVay and Goff with all their new weapons.
With any luck we can match our record from last year.

Cohn has an attack plan sketched out.
Remember the success NE had against SEA a couple years back. The soon to be QB coach and talk show announcer at that time, Steve Logan, said to attack the middle of the D with short passes to slot WR, RB, and TE.
Trent Taylor, Hyde/Breida, and Kittle could be busy tomorrow.
Still want the loss but we can look good.

If the Rams put up another 40 pts against Washington today, we might start wondering if we hired the wrong offensive guru this past offseason.
If we don’t put up double digits this week ourselves Skeebs, I’m thinking 0-3 come Thursday night myself.
Assuming Seattle does to us what Seattle normally does to us today, of course.
Deja vu all over again. Top D’s in CAR then SEA. Last year had tougher teams at the start.
At least Hoyer will stick. FO bailed on Gabbert for the Marxist only a chuck could love. BG in a far better place.
I don’t think he’s smart enough to be a Marxist.
“Laken Tomlinson to start for 49ers at LG in place of Zane Beadles.”
According to chuck’s rules that would make you a racist. Expect another appearance soon.
49ers inactives
WR Kendrick Bourne
CB Ahkello Witherspooon
DB Lorenzo Jerome
LB P. Taumoepenu
LB Reuben Foster
OL Erik Magnuson
DL X.Cooper
First quarter yardage: Seahawks 91, 49ers 9.
If Seattle had any offense other than Russell Wilson running in circles making plays, any O-line or running game, this thing would already be over.
Seahawks 6, Carlos Hyde 6. We all saw this coming.
Tied 6-6 at the half.
Defense is inspired meeting Seahag RBs in backfield.
I imagine the Seattle locker room is pretty steamy right now.
Niners call a timeout and Sehags still put a kill shot hit on Hoyer.
That should have been a personal foul on Clark.
Century Link Stadium is not so loud today.
Did the 12th man stay home today?
When we were good, I always said, “Don’t let a weaker team hang around after you should have put them away.”
Seattle should have buried us early.
Question now is, can we steal this game right out from under them?
When is the last time the Niners led in the 4th quarter in Seattle???
Moral victory?
And the answer is, no. Defense wore down and cannot even stop the run at the end. But, Yeah, we scared the shit out of Carroll and Company right up to the last 7 or 8 minutes. They almost gave this one away.
A QB without wheels. Thank god we were able to pull this back from the jaws of victory. Am assuming SEA can run out the clock.
Hoyer was chosen for a reason. That is why they released Gabbert.
At least one demon has been exorcised.
Seattle is not the chamber of horrors it has been.
Average margin of victory before today was 16 points.
This team had fight in them.
RW exposed on all of his runs. Even CAR and cam gave up on that approach.
SEA may be shopping.
Tom
Last year at Seattle Gabbert was 14/25 119 yards 0TDs and 1 Int.
Bottom line Niners lost by 19 points 38-17.
I have turned the page on Gabbert. He wasn’t the answer. Time to end your mancrush.
Seahgas had the ball almost 14 mins longer than the Niners.
Time of possession caused the Defense to be spent in the 4th quarter.
Seahags ran 31 more plays than the Niners.
Apples and oranges. An NFL starter was let go for nothing. He will have a career.
MINN trades for BG soon. Bradford and Bridgewater are glass right now. Heard it here first.
From Brady Henderson ESPN:
SEATTLE — The go-ahead touchdown catch that Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Paul Richardson made Sunday must have been a painful one.
Richardson suffered a compound fracture of the ring finger on his right hand earlier in the game.
Fellow wide receiver Doug Baldwin marveled at the feat in the locker room following the Seahawks’ 12-9 win over the San Francisco 49ers.
“I don’t know if I’m allowed to tell you guys this but he dislocated his finger,” Baldwin said. “It came out of his skin and he’s sitting there bleeding, his bone is out of the skin. He goes into the locker room, sews it up and tapes it up, comes back out and scores the game-winning touchdown. That’s the mentality that we have here and I couldn’t be more proud of these guys.”
From Cohn:
QUARTERBACK: F. Statistically one of the worst performances we’ve seen from a 49ers quarterback in a long time. Brian Hoyer threw no touchdown passes, one interception, completed just 56 percent of his passes and threw for a mere 99 yards. Ugh! Instead of signing Hoyer, the Niners should have signed Jay Cutler, as I wrote during the offseason. Cutler led the Dolphins to a win over the Chargers today and posted a quarterback rating of 101.8.
The barnyard swamp had a low opinion of cutler, known as cutlets over there.
Cohn forgets that 2 years ago Kap threw 2 pick sixes in the first 6 mins of the game and a total of 4 ints leading to a 47-7 loss to the Cards. That was a truly forgettable and forgettable performance by a 49er QB.
Meant to say forgettable and regrettable performance.
2 weeks into it and the Rams have found the End Zone pretty frequently.
If Hoyer doesn’t find it Thursday night, I’m curious to see what happens with the QB position during the extended run-up to week 4.
Way too early to panic but….CJ has to be given some game exposure this season to determine whether Cousins becomes a FA target next Spring.
I’d prefer to stay neutral on Drafting a QB in favor of other needs in RD1 if possible.
Again, too early for that prep just yet.
If Shanny doesn’t beat Sean McVay Thursday night, it oughta get real interesting….
Our best path to victory over the Rams might just be Carlos and the running game?
Rams allowed 229Yds on the ground to DC.
Screw Hoyer.
Pound the rock.
New post is up.
