The last of the 49ers’ offseason three day practices starts Tuesday. It’s called a minicamp, not an Organized Team Activity, and attendance is mandatory. Failure to show up results in fines totally up to $60,000. This will give us a good idea just how hard headed Dashon Goldson intends to be this offseason. He can check in, sign his Franchise Tender, and we can all stop talking about him. Or he can waste $60,000 and indicate he’s an idiot.
Goldson is the only 49er putting his own agenda above the team’s. Not a good look. He’ll be 28 when the season begins, and 29 next year when he hits the open market. A five year contract would put him at 33 when it ends. For a free safety who’s more hard hitting than ball hawking, 33 is pretty close to the end of the line career wise. So, it’s easy to grasp Goldson’s tactics for what is probably his one shot at a big, long term deal.
But nobody is going to give him $8 mil per year, like he reportedly wants, nor even $7 mil. The Niners have offered $5 mil for five years. The Ftag is $6.2 mil for this year. Somewhere in these obscene dollars lies sanity, but we’re not expecting Goldson to locate it.
Jim Harbaugh used nose tackle Isaac Sopoaga as a short yardage fullback last year, and this two way player trend continues this year. DT Will Tukuafu has been getting fullback time in the camps, and DE Demarcus Dobbs has played a little tight end. This is part of the 1% factor Harbaugh espouses, the little extras that give you a chance to beat an opponent. The enemy in this case is Injuries and the 53 man roster limit. It also provides camp humor, which was a bit lacking in the previous two regimes.
It appears that Alex Boone is being handed the RG position, with Daniel Kilgore prepping to play backup center. If Boone struggles this year, many expect 4th round pick Joe Looney to provide the most serious challenge to replace Boone. That doesn’t seem likely for the season opener in Green Bay, however, so only a disastrous exhibition season can prevent Boone from finally cracking the starting lineup. And with Joe Staley entrenched at left tackle and Anthony Davis getting rave reviews in his third season at right tackle, this is Boone’s one and only shot to be a starter for the soon to become World Champion San Francisco 49ers.
Skeebs- where did you hear Goldson was being offered 5 mil/ 5 years? I think that is about right but a rumor from a source was saying just last week we are offering 7 mil.
Don’t you just love a story based on a rumor from a source?
That’s what half the news in the league amounts to.
When I was in college I had a roomer with a source, but his source was where we bought drugs.
Berger
The NFL is one big gossip column.
All the networks have their guys with the “sources” Schefter with ESPN, Lacanfora & Lombardi with NFL Network, Peter King with SI, Jason Cole with Yahoo and Jay Glazer with Fox.
Goldson didn’t learn fromn last year and still feels he’s always worth a dollar more than what’s being offered. Somehow I think he’s of the mindset that he gave the Niners a disount by having to play for $2mil last year and this is his chance to recoup the $3mil he felt he was shorted.
If he doesn’t get his long terms deal than he’s screwed himself
because at 29 he might get a 3 year deal but still around $5 mil.
bullit- I don’t disagree but I’m a Capitalist. The team has to make money, the player has to make money. I think Dashon might be overpricing himself but that is the way business and sales works; and, I don’t even know the facts, which makes judging a guessing game. He and the team will find an amount that works or he will be out of here. Dashon is 28 and probably sees this as his best chance for a good pay day. Let the guy do what he thinks is best fore his future. If he makes a mistake he has that right. I just hope he doesn’t screw himself like Franklin appeared to do. Everybody here is making good points, let’s see what happens.
Berger
Without a salary cap you can afford to overpay players.
With a salary cap you have to forecast where your money is going. The main focal point and target is re-signing Bowman and in the eyes of management and most Niner followers Navarro seems a high priority.
If Goldson is holding out for $8 mil he’s getting bad advice.
Bingo. This is EXACTLY what AF did. He got offended by the franchise tag, sat out, missed most of the practices, came back fat and slow, took 4 weeks to play himself back into shape, and sealed his fate with the new regime by being percieved as a ‘me-first’ guy. Right or wrong, that was the perception. They said ‘later’ and he didn’t get his payday. After a fair to middling season with the Saints, he’s on the sidelines looking for a gig. There’s a VERY fine line between looking for the best deal and forcing the issue with contract demands. Goldson has been VERY vocal about it going on 2.5 years now, and really looked foolish when there was no demand for his services last year.
.
Granted, I don’t think Goldson will let himself get badly out of shape, but missing practices is a ticket to the bottom of the depth chart. Look at Shawntae Spencer. Nagging injuries, and what appeared to me to be a bit of disinterest on his part led to his being buried on the bench.
.
Bowman still has 2 years left on his contract. That being said, they’ll likely restructure after this season at the latest.
Bowman is next year and Willis’s contract will clear about 10 mil or more for next year. Tomorrow’s biggest story line might end up being Goldson showing, or not.
Where has Phil been?
He’s been on my blog recently . . .
Don’t get me wrong. I think Goldson is a good safety. But by no means is he in the upper echelon. The niners will be able to absorb his absense if need be much like they survived (and flourished) without AF.
Maiocco says we have till July 16 to sign Goldson to a long term contract. After that its a one year deal only.
It might make sense for Goldson to do a year for $6,212 million, gamble that he is likely to have another pro bowl year playing with the supporting cast we have on defense and leverage a blockbuster deal elsewhere next season.
Maybe we agree to his number next season if he plays well, but I doubt it.
In other news, what’s the over/under on how many games Moss plays for the niners this season?
12th,
Moss gets a crack at his old Division in the NFC North.
He’s got to be ready for the Pack,Bears, Vikes and Lions no?
I’d like to think he wants that Ring he missed with the Pats too.
However……let Alex miss him a few times or, not stroke his ego enough, and the dark side of Randy could rear it’s somewhat predictable head.
I’m going to be the optimist and go with Randy wants the Ring.
He goes at least 80% and shows up when it counts, The Playoffs.
Well, I’d go 6. I don’t know. If Moss is trying to rehab his career and parlay it into something, he may give it his all. Maybe he realizes it’s his last chance to make a good impression on the league.
.
Naaah.
.
More often than not, most of his teammates end up liking him. But hey, he’s a longshot to make it to the end of the season. Of he, OchoStinko, and TO, I’d take Moss.
I would’ve given Randy a call last year when Braylon was shown the door. Had nothing to lose by asking.
I actually think Moss knows the deal here in SF.
He’s got no guarantees and he’s clearly the best at the position with this Team.
For me, it all hangs on Alex.
A rolling football gathers no Moss. Find him and score him or there will be “no mas”, or no Moss, however you would rather interpret it.
Maiooco is saying Godson does not have to show up for today’s mandatory mini camp because he is not under contract.
I know I mis-spelled Maiocco. So what? My friend Dennis from New York calls me Boiga! It reminds me of Carl Erskine of the 1950s Dodgers being called Carl “Oiskin” by the fans in Brooklyn!
NJ, niners enquired about Moss at the beginning of last season but were told he was retired.
Interesting he chose to come to the niners this year with zero money guaranteed. Leads me to believe its the ring he wants and the chance to end his career with success.
Having said all that, its Moss we are talking about, his commitment will revolve around his receptions/TD’s and the teams win/loss record.
I am with NJ, 16+ games. Chuck thinks 6, no doubt its possible too.
So far in OTA’s Smith to Moss has been the deal. Can Smith do the same thing on medium to long routes in live games is the crux of it.
Berger, where’s your games number?
We should consult with Dennis too since he is the resident pro gambler.
In 2010 Darrelle Revis Signed a four-year, $46 million contract. The deal contains $32.5 million guaranteed, including all of Revis’ first two base salaries and an $18 million first-year option bonus. 2012: $4.5 million (+ $3 million roster bonus), 2013: $3 million (+ $3 million roster bonus), 2014-2016: (Voidable Years) $3 million, 2017: Free Agent.
Now the selfish bastard wants to hold out and get a new deal.
Nothing but bullshit here and pure greed. He’s good but needs to honor his end of a bargain. The Jets gave him a lot of the guaranteed money these first 2 years and now he wants to extort more by threatening not showing up. The Jets are a mess and Revis
is a big contributor to it.
I think Moss is here for the year.
They should let Revis sit out the year. He wants his pension. The greedy bastard will not sit for long.
“For who? For what?”
The thing about Smith and long routes is a bit of a misnomer. Smith seemed pretty adept at hitting VD on long routes.
.
The WRs? Sure, a different story. But, as usual, we’re back to the chicken/egg thing. The most glaring deficiency is the communication between Alex and Crabs last year. They never really synched up.
It was Joe Montana’s 56th birthday yesterday . . .
.
On another note:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPJgtQwtVVA&feature=related
Shit. Didn’t realize Bob Welch shot himself as well. Montrose and now this.
From Eric Branch, re: Moss
49ers OC Greg Roman is the latest coach or player to have fallen head over heels for Randy Moss: “He has really been as good as you could possibly ask for in terms of being totally engrossed in football. He is a throwback. He is a throwback football player … He’s got his family and football and his faith. That’s what he’s all about. … It’s been great watching the players interact – the quarterbacks interact, the receivers interact with him. We’ll all be better because of it. I’m truly impressed with everything Randy Moss represents.”
The grass is always green in spring training, to steal a baseball metaphor.
.
There are a ton of players that think he’s a misunderstood genius. There are nearly as many who think he’s a quitter and a prima donna.
.
At this point, I think he’s going to be on his best behavior and really put forth the effort to come in and try to be all he can. That is, until (or if) the shit hits the fan.
.
Hey, the dude’s an enigma surrounded by a riddle wrapped in a mystery. I liked the move at the time, and still think it could pay huge dividends. If not, he’s cut loose like yesterday’s garbage.
unca- That was a fun little bit of info on Hendrix!
I almost feel that Randy went into his retirement phase on a sour note.
I’d surmise that his whiff at the Ring in NE sent him into a tailspin of sorts.
Being the Senior member on a young and vibrant Team might just be the combination he’s in need of?
Harbaugh vs. Belichick? Brady vs. Smith? Randy should realize that his contributions, no matter how small, will be more appreciated here then they were with the Pats.
Here, we’re fighting for recognition, there, it’s all about expectations and Brady.
Hoping for the best Randy can give, while also knowing deep down, that he can go sour at the drop of hat.
I just feel that Harbaugh gives him the latitude to be the Pro Bowl WR and, flash a little ‘Randy’ attitude, without upsetting the Locker Room the way it might have been perceived in the Belichick/NE environment.
Randy went undefeated there of course, except when it came time to grab The Ring.
Hope that motivates him to throw Alex on his back and, show these younger WRs, and DBs for that matter, how it’s done.
It’s hard for me to believe a guy would come out of retirement and play for chump change only to dog his way through the season. Moss is here to impress the world and get a ring. He’s going to have a great year.
If you look at Moss’ history it is similar to TO and I mena that in a positive way. Both have been with numerous teams and they always have productive years and behave in the first year with a club.
He’s here to help the team get a ring and he’ll lead rather than ride coattails.
If he signed a fat contract then you can be skeptical but so far he’s been a positive.
Skeebs, I’m sure NE/Minn/Tennessee felt the same way in 2010. Maybe he felt unappreciated. I don’t know. He’s in a good situation here, and he has young guys to work with. That can be good or bad. I just know that, for all his accolades and HOF numbers, he’s on a short leash here.
.
Harbaugh will not let him be a disruption for very long. The Minn situation is sort of understandable. Chilly Childress WAS in over his head, and Belichick runs shit his way and got tired on Moss’ complaining.
.
That being said, it was really only his Raider stint that never got off the ground (until 2010). He said all the right things then as well.
.
Hey, it’s something to talk about anyway.
I’m no fan of any guy who doesn’t play hard all the time. But for one year, and what he can do for the offense, I’m willing to be Machiavellian about it. If this was a morals league, that wouldn’t be acceptable. But it’s football, so … rah, rah, Randy.
Skeebs
Just like Perrish Cox who could be a valuable asset and a good addition.
His story is probably a bunch of BS because he claimed not to have sex with his accuser but his seed
was inside her.
He’s either gonna lose the civil suit or settle and give her a truckload of money.
Goodell will suspend him like Big Ben and the Niners will have to work around that.
I’m sure Cox is on a real short leash where a speeding ticket might be enough to get him cut.
Googie Goodell has no legal leg to stand on if Cox beat the court case. Civil? Doesn’t matter.
.
Just as Goodell had no legal right to suspend Worthlessberger. Big Ben, while being a douchebag of the highest order, was never convicted of anything. What right does Goodell have of suspending him for crimes not committed?
Hey, if it’s an Antonio Bryant speeding ticket, sure. Reckless, going 110 mph drunk, resisting, evading; all thrown out. If that was me, I’d get 9-12 months in county.
NJ nice post, Skeebs I’m with ya on Moss, makes no sense to get the spotlight back on him after retirement only to fail again. Niners are probably the most complete team with top tier coaching across the board. Just a little talent light at WR and QB last year and since each needs the other equally an upgrade at WR should translate to better QB play.
Unca, bringing the game into disrepute is an offence in and of itself regardless of legal outcome. Plus which, who honestly believes Rotlessberger was innocent? Obviously not Goodie.
A lot of crap happened in Denver.
Darren Williams was killed in Javon Walker’s arms and Walker was never the same even though with another team he got rolled in Las Vegas and they found him on the street. Brandon Marshall was not a model citizen and the Cox thing happened supposedly with 2 other teammates present one being their #1 receiver Demetreius Thomas (sic).
And Peyton Manning chose the Broncox for their family atmosphere LOL!
12th, it has nothing to do with the fact that Worthlessberger is a total asshole. Yes, he is. But Goodell hs no right to suspend a player based on something that didn’t happen in the eyes of the law. I ain’t defending Worthlessberger by any means. Just pointing out that Goodell has no legal grounds to suspend him.
.
It would have been interesting to see WB fight it, because he would have won. But it’s bad PR to fight a case that’s so messy and sordid. Tagliabue had the onus of being a softie when it came to off-field transgressions (see Leonard Little and a bunch of other guys), and Goodie wants to be known as a real ball-buster. There’s nothing wrong with that, but there’s also no legal justification for Goodell keeping Worthlessberger from earning his living.

Bullitt, Walker was with the Raiders whan that happened.
When Walker was rolled for his cash and jewelry.
The Eagles are idiotic. They’re going to change their logo to a cartoon character?
.
Can you say joke?
Chuck
Yes I know he was a Raiduh when that happened but trouble follows all these guys around. You think that if your best friend died in your arms you’d stay away from the club scene. My point is that’s why Cox is on a super short leash at least in year one.
Niner management vouched for him saying he was a good guy.

SF Giant pitcher Matt Cain throws a perfect game!
Frank Gore is #28 on the NFLs Top 100 per NFL Network.
The Niners have 2 more players to go and now it seems they will be in the Top 20 and possibly Top 10.
Those players are Willis and Smith.
bullit- Madonna and NoFear? Go figure!
I always thought I wanted to see every woman naked, then I saw the Madonna video from the above post. Things have changed. Now I just want to see most women naked!
No kidding. That was not a pretty sight.
Madonna reportedly dropped her drawers like Singletary the other night. 54 years old.
Michelle Pfeiffer is the same age and looks much better.

Alex Smith in the top ten?

Settle down, NoFear. I’m kidding.
Going to be a brutal U.S. Open.
Nick Watney just made a double eagle on 17, only the third in US OPen history.
I went to the 1998 US Open at the Olympic Club. They sell hamburgers shaped to hotdog buns
and they’re pretty damn good.
Also parked my car in a lot near Lake Merced and had it broken into. Memories….
Jim Harbaugh said Alex Smith had separated himself “even further” from other QBs on roster … “nothing set in stone” behind Smith.
But wait …
Jim Harbaugh says that Colin Kaepernick had a “near-perfect day” on this, the final practice of minicamp.
Smith saying he has 3 or 4 good years left in the tank. He also gives Randy Moss his seal of approval as a good teammate and says he was given a bad rap.

How many grains of salt does that come with, Bullit?
Privit Modaki Skeebs.
Harbaugh speak is a language unto itself. Everything is the best only. He is not a half glass full guy, his glass is overflowing at all times. His latest explanation of ManningGate didn’t help, but the guy can coach which is all I care about.
Moran Norriss signs with Houston.
Huzzah!
NoFear will be following the Houston Texans. They just signed one of his favorite players. It’s now on to the Aubrayo Franklin watch to see who else he will root for!
New post is up.
