Once More With Gusto

The Seahawks come to town next Sunday for an encore performance of “Kick my butt!”

It’s doubtful the 49ers will be as generous this time around as they were two weeks ago in Seattle, when they gifted the Seahawks with 14 points while also flubbing away 6 to 14 points that were easily within their grasp.

So this game will be much closer than the previous one. You’ve got one team trying to nail down a wild card spot in the playoffs and the other team trying to ruin a perfectly fine spot atop the board at next year’s Draft. Afterall, Arik Armstead has no interest in the Niners having the number one spot, where they could draft someone like Nick Bosa, who would immediately relegate Arik to the bench or more likely a search through the league looking for a job next year.

Kyle Shanahan also would no doubt like to bolster his sagging reputation with what would be a meaningless win rather than take the calculating approach of the turkey on the other Bay Area team by tanking out the season. But players don’t always cooperate with the wishes of their HC and they go out and win games they could easily lose even if they were trying, which they aren’t supposed to be doing, but they do it anyway.

Only vested veterans know how to show up, collect a paycheck, and give the illusion that they are playing hard and trying to win. Rookies, who now make up most of the 49er starters, do not.

The Niners have lost 10 straight games to the Seahawks. If Nick Mullens puts an end to that streak Sunday, he’ll be a big time hero about as long as Alex Smith was after the 2011 season. Less, even. Because Shanahan still thinks CJ Beathard deserves to be the backup QB next year. And that probably wouldn’t change even if Mullens beat the Seahawks, Bears, and Rams to close out the season.

At any rate, be sure to return here Monday when we will explain how we knew all along what the outcome would be.

Most disturbing stat this year are the 2 INTs and lack of turnovers generated by defense.
The defense’s inability to tip passes and force fumbles means the D is putrid and mediocre.

Case in point where would the Niners be without Navarro and his pick six against the Falcons in seizing victory from the jaws of defeat?

  2. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

This secondary (and pass rush) is not as bad as the one we had in 1980, but it’s close.

The only solution is new players.

  3. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

We saw what we need, what we lack, and hopefully how to prioritize the fixing of that.

Best, and maybe only solution is through the draft. Serious draft capital is found most likely in day 1 and 2 picks. Those make me giddy with promise.

BDN needs to QB us the next 2 games, which are sure losers. A 2nd or 3rd in 2019 draft needs to happen. The package could even be with DEN. JAX a direct trade for the pick. Maybe a Brock Osweiler 2nd for Blake Bortles.

Whatever LAR can do, we can do better. LOSE that damn game, by whatever means necessary. We control our destiny, get it done.

We have seen enough of dickhead this year. T Moore needs the experience and to showcase his talent. Would also bench Defo for LAR.

  4. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

    Ideas for LAR?

Entire starting D gets the flu that Sunday. Shanahan and Lynch can put on helmets.

QB1, QB2, and QB can be those 3 male cheerleaders. Our OC may need to wear a larger size cup for that game, if we go that route.

Bottom line, blow it all up for LAR. Take no chances.

  5. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Just have Shanny fukit up like he usually does.
    Kick FGs in the RZ.
They have to know what’s at stake relative to Draft position?
    But……they’re SF-Troop for a reason.

  6. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The Ram game might be significant for the Rams if they are playing for home field advantage with the Aints.

IMO you’re dreaming if you expect a team to give up a 2nd/3rd rounder for Mullins.

  7. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

SEA gave up a 2nd for Matt Flynn the same year they drafted Russell Wilson.

  8. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

I was incorrect. Flynn was a free agent signed by SEA after a 4 year career as backup in GB.

  9. robNo Gravatar says:

We’re keeping Mullins ! the only question is can we get anything for Beathard. He was the 26th rated starting QB in football before the switch .

  10. robNo Gravatar says:

Our secondary is going to be just fine ! Witherspoon has been among the highest rated CB’s in the league the last few weeks, even against some of the top WR’s in football ! D.J Reed is coming on too, first on spec teams and now in coverage !

  11. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

Any half-assed serious foozball game watcher after seeing the Seahawks get a referee’s flag inexplicably picked up after commiting an obvious foul which would have benefited the Vikings tremendously and would have completely changed the fortunes of that game (yeah, yet another one for the books in the Seahawks column).

And for good measure seeing a dozen if not more non-calls in favor of the Chiefs (got to promote that young phenom Mahomes) as well as being shocked witness over the past few years of the many ridiculous calls which favor certain teams, many times the same certain teams, must come to realize the only path to win at this game is to open the checkbook and pay off the Gambinos, er Goodells, to achieve the most favored team status. Failing that, forget about making any room in your trophy case.

Bah! Humbug! Or other appropriate expression of seasonal deception.

  12. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Say it ain’t so, protection money still in vogue.

Cost of doing business I guess. Some things never change.

  13. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

    From Schefter:

“Browns snap 11-game losing streak vs. Broncos.

Chargers snap 9-game losing streak to Chiefs.

Hope for the 49ers, who have lost 10 straight games to Seattle, Sunday’s opponent.”

I say, bah. Go for 11 Niners!

  14. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

    49ers inactives:

    SS Jaquiski Tartt
    T Shon Coleman
    G Erik Magnuson
    DT Sheldon Day
    RB Alfred Morris
    S Tyree Robinson
    NCB K’Waun Williams

  15. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

    Colts 23, Cowboys ZERO!

  16. winderNo Gravatar says:

Yeah, that is just so sad.

  17. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

SOS got better for us today. ARI +2 over us.

WASH 7 wins, ATL 5 wins for ARI.
NYG 5 wins, TB 5 wins for SF

  18. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

That’s it, gentlemen. We have SOS low score.

If we lose out, we are #1. All we need are same wins as ARI and OAK.

  19. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

    Seahawks beat themselves with penalties.

49ers beat themselves by fumbling away a shot at Bosa or Quinnen Williams, for a meaningless victory in a season already lost.

49ers will pick no higher than 3 now.

  20. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

NYJ has 4 wins, with lower SOS.

BDN is better than a quality backup. What can he fetch in trade.

What can Jimmy G fetch in trade? 2 1st’s and a 2nd, would do it in a heartbeat.

    One of them goes.

  21. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Would look to trade Jimmy to JAX. Ramsey CB plus their 1st and 2nd in 2019.

  22. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

    1. Cardinals
    2. Raiders
    3. Jets
    4. 49ers

  23. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

Right. Trade both our QBs. Good idea. Brilliant. Is your real name Mark Davis?

  24. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Add Bortles for 2020 2nd from JAX.

  25. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

There you go. That’ll get us the #1 pick in 2021, bakken.

  26. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

CK, where did I say both.

Reading comprehension not good. Are you Chuck?

One of them goes, was last sentence in post.

  27. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Skeebs, we will also W with LAR sitting starters. 5 wins.

  28. bullitNo Gravatar says:

“Would look to trade Jimmy to JAX.”
“Add Bortles for 2020 2nd from JAX.”

These two comments lead me to question your football acumen. Are you Trent Baalke?

  29. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

    What a *!/#!!! joke. Self-inflicted damage.

Learned absolutely nothing after phucking ourselves out of Myles Garrett.

Kiss Bosa or new Suh Quinnen Williams goodbye. Josh Allen gone also before we pick.

We are the new Detroit Lions. That is the consolation booby prize. Gonna be a long slog, for a few playoff games maybe.

  30. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Jacksonville is about to cut Bortles because he sucks. Why the hell would anyone trade a #2 pick for him?

  31. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Bullit, you are so behind the curve. I posted previously on this, referenced a NN Fanpost. Try to get JAX’s 2020 2nd for salary cap relief for them. Like CLE got for taking Brock Osweiler off of HOU.

If we get a good bounty for Jimmy, burning a little salary cap for a 2nd in a year and a half is a win win.

  32. bullitNo Gravatar says:

I do not understand why you even bother copying postings from other blogs “fanposts”.

Fanposts are just like you or me posting and having someone on another blog quoting us like we are some kind of authority and we all have opinions like everyone has an asshole.

  33. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

Bakken, you don’t sign a quarterback like Garoppolo for trade bait. Not after signing him for a fortune. Unless you are Mark Davis You don’t trade your backup that has proven to be a solid guy. Unless he demands it, and I don’t think Mullens is at the point inn his career where he will demand anything, You trade Beathard for whatever you can get.

Draft picks are nice, but they aren’t the be all end-all. The Rams got a bounty from Washington, but it didn’t mean anything until they got rid of Fisher. The Browns have had high picks for 20 years. Look where it has gotten them.

  34. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

I’d look to deal for JRamsey in exchange for Jimmy/Thomas too.
Arik is the better fit but, he’s got a pricey 5th year option due now.
Mullens is worth keeping over CJ IMO.
We break the Seattle Curse and, screwed ourselves out of a position to deal now.
This Draft is heavy with Edge guys, so it’s not a total loss I suppose?
It just provides others with the ability to ‘play the Board’ for more Picks.
From what I’ve seen, Nick has a better ‘it’ factor than Jimmy too.

Gotta think Flacco is going to be moved from Baltimore, Eli possibly as well. Jax is a likely landing spot for Eli since Coughlin is there. Hard to move Jimmy with his price tag now and, a repaired knee. Look at Wentz. He’s quite a bit more timid now with ‘traffic’ around his feet in the pocket. It’s going to take time for the mental factor to subside.

  35. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Put a FA target on Indy OG Mark Glowinski too.
He’s a former Seattle Draft Pick and, would be an upgrade over Person IMO.
Indy shutout the Cow Patties today as noted too.
We need to upgrade Richburg as well. Have to look into his current deal, to determine if it’s feasible to move on after year 1 however, without taking a Cap hit.
Young kids looked good today. Glaring need for a #1 WR remains. They don’t come from the Draft that often either. Kittle is a keeper. Add a solid #2 like N’Keal Harry perhaps?

Bullit, your Fat Man in the Middle, Poona Ford, was on my Draft radar and, looked good today, albeit for the enemy. There are guys like him aplenty this year.
Need the Edge/Pocket collapsing Interior guy to get this Defense into high gear.

  36. winderNo Gravatar says:

Whatever, it was just a very sweet win today against a true rival. The draft will fall where it may. We have a bunch of very scrapy young players that just don’t give up. Our win/loss record sucks but it’s pretty obvious that we are playing with a bunch of heart and there are a few that seem to be coming into their own. Moore, pettis, DJ Jones and so on.

  37. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

As is always the case in any Draft, it’s a crap-shoot.
Having the ability to sell out of the Top slot is the Ace to hold.
Lynch may get offers, may opt to pass etc. He’s just not calling the shots now.
Good to stick it to Pete and, derail his Playoff plans another week at least. 😀

  38. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The Egos just beat the “invincible” Rams.
Where would the Egos be if they dealt Foles for a second round pick at the start of the year. Wentz is done for this year with a back problem that is reported to be an old injury. I*t is not a bad idea to have a decent backup.

Clearly Mullens has moved past Beathard as the #2 when Jimmy G comes back.

  39. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The Niners have another shot to draft a similar player in NT/DT Kris Nelson out of Texas. Very similar to Ford who was an undrafted FA.
Nelson is quick and penetrates to make stops in the backfield. He will most likely be there on Day 3.

Pettis is starting to justify his second round draft status and is growing every week.

  40. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Would like to see PFF grades on IOL pass pro. Jarran Reed had 2 sacks on a late 4th Qtr drive. Person and Richburg got split on first one. Second had Richburg not pick up on a stunt.

  41. bullitNo Gravatar says:

It was just over a year ago when this franchise was sinking and terribly flawed at the QB position under Hoyer/Beathard with a record of 1-10. Previous year under Kapernick/Gabbert they sucked 2-14.

THen the trade for Jimmy G and the win streak happened and some considered this team a contender. For me iot is complete insanity tom even contemplate trading JimmY G. That’s like saying Let’s get rid of Joe Montana, Steve Bono is cheaper and can win a game or two.

  42. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

T Moore got good experience after Witherspoon went out.

Poona Ford also putting the hurt on Mullens.

Winning meaningless games at the end of the year have kept us losers.

  43. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

How much difference in performance is there between Jimmy and BDN. Trade of Jimmy will give us a JAX 1st and 2nd. JAX currently has 4 wins. Plus a shut down corner in Ramsey.

Jimmy is bigger and more durable, maybe.

KS play design and playcalling is the secret sauce.

  44. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Mullens is smart. Sees the field, easily passes QB 101.

Also frees up salary cap money for top FA WR and OZ OG if out there. IND has LG Nelson and RG Braden Smith. Glowinski available for us if he has size for pass pro and mobility for OZ.

  45. bullitNo Gravatar says:

There is no indication that Jags would trade that package for Jimmy G.
You got that fantasy trade off a fanboys post on NN.

Aren’t you the QB Guru who told us all to watch how Blaine Gabbert was going to make his new teams contenders? Your track record in QB evaluation is very flawed to say the least.

It is ridiculous to compare Garoppolo to Mullens. Just stop.

  46. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bullit the Jimmy suggestion makes some sense if we can live with Mullens long term.
The kid has stones, and comes to play. Not to mention the near nothing Contract he’s got at this point.
From a business perspective, and coming off a major knee repair, Jimmy could be attractive to someone like Jax, in exchange for another high-priced piece on their roster, like Ramsey.
Something to consider if an offer were available.

Jimmy has next to no game experience to date and, is being paid like other top tier guys with long, proven resumés.
Simply a numbers option, to swap for a proven pass rusher or CB.
    Something to chew on….

  47. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Personally, I see Coughlin as an attractive destination for Eli. NYG connection thing. Place holder for their next QB Pick.
Carr in Oakland, Flacco in Baltimore are likely on the move too.
Might be an opening in DC if Alex is finished too.
    Rule #1 –
ALWAYS hold a conversation with Danny in DC.
He’s known to get desperate when it comes to Draft deals 😀

  48. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Sorry I disagree simply because this team has been looking for a decent starting QB since Jeff Garcia.
Logically Jimmy G’s trade value should be diminished because of the injury.

I didn’t see Indy trading Andrew Luck this year because of his price tag because his backup Jacoby Brisset won 4 games last year in his absence.

Franchise QBs are hard to come by.You hold on to them until they are too old.

Flacco lost his jobe to Lamar Jackson thi season. That’s going to be a repeat of CK with the Niners because Jackson is running and he’s showing that he’s not going to last the season because he’s being punished and will turn out to be a one trick pony.

  49. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Wouldn’t draft a WR in first 2 rounds. Take a look at Denzel Mims WR Baylor who could be qa sleeper or the 2 WRs fro Texas if they declare for the draft.

The WR from ASU has mixed reviews and might be overdrafted.

  50. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Perfectly fine Bullit – Flacco was an overreaction Contract IMO, he beat us in the SB, value went up etc, much like I believe Jimmy’s was. We felt compelled to wrap him up, before he hit the Market and, likely overpaid IMO.
Time will tell of course. He’s got no great amount of playing time under his belt, which concerns me to some extent.
Granted, dealing a big Contract wouldn’t be easy either.

As for N’Keal Harry, he’s a #2 WR IMO. No need to consider him in RD1.
He’s a possession Receiver at best. Great size and, much like Anquan, if I were to make a comparison.
