The world has gotten a bit dangerous and weird since we last checked in. No NBA, no MLB, no March Madness. America is in the process of shutting down it looks like. And when it re-opens, who knows what it will look like or how many of us will still be among the breathing.

The beginning of NFL Free Agency is supposed to occur next Wednesday, but who knows if it will or not. Its significance has dropped off the scale of important matters.

There’s a lot of blame and nastiness going on out there, but we’re not going to do that here. The only thing that matters now is that we stay calm, stay cool, stay home, and stay alive. As an old timer, I’m in the high risk category for this virus, as are some of you. If I get this virus, my chances of survival are probably slim and none.

Since we’re all anonymous here (more or less), the only way to know our particular fates during the days ahead is for each of us to check in from time to time and let us know you’re still among the living.

Take care, fellow outsiders.

Skeebs, you take care too. Since I can never stay away for too long you will be hearing from me probably more than you want to.

Very weird that with all the cancellations there will be no live sports on TV. Viewing habits are about to change.
The fragility of life reveals itself as your fate might rest on who you stand next to in an elevator or touching a door knob. The threat is real and shouldn’t be minimized.

    Be safe Niner Faithful.

Niners make an adjustment on Buckner that saves them $2 mil per Yates of ESPN

“49ers DL DeForest Buckner had his fifth-year option value adjusted from $14.36M (DE value) to 12.378M (DT value). A distinction that could be pertinent in extension talks and would be relevant in the event Buckner is a tag candidate next year absent an extension.”

    Just Sayin:
Suspended LB Aldon Smith is “in the process of applying for reinstatement.”
Smith fell out of the league back in 2015 due to off-field issues. He was arrested last June for DUI but has been clean since. Currently on indefinite suspension, Smith’s chances of getting back in the league would be improved if the new CBA passes, which cuts back on player discipline. An impact pass rusher (47.5 career sacks) when on the field, 30-year-old Smith should have a market if he’s reinstated.

  8. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

CBA approved. Spared a year or more of labor related b.s.

  9. winderNo Gravatar says:

Yeah, waiting to see what happens with the no pot suspension policy. I still don’t see how anyone could play on gameday stoned on today’s high quality pot. Hopefully the game won’t be stuck on stupid.

    Making another move…

  12. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Will we try and keep the crew intact, or be bold with risk.

FA starts this week. Does this make sense?

Trade Armstead for a day 2 pick. FO knows what the market value is by now. Saves salary cap. Hurts and would love to keep him.

Strong WR class. Let Sanders go. Coaching builds on Sanders experience imparted to the WR unit. Deebo and Hurd need to ball.

Try and keep Ward. Ward and TMoore battle it out. FS an injury prone position so need both.

Early picks to IOL (RG Person upgrade if there in draft) and WR.

Solly and a day 3 pick for a day 2 pick, a SS.

FA dollars to CB. We want to win NFC again. Does Xavier Rhodes still have it?

The big assumption is TMoore is our future FS this year or next.

DeFo and Kittle get their contracts. Spend big on that CB2 with no guarantees after 2nd year. Witherspoon and Mosely are young so hang in their fellas.

  13. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Miami and IND have dollars. IND could pick up Brady QB1, AA and Linval Joseph as DT’s and battle it out with BALT.

  14. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Reports are that Hurd is still in bad shape.
His back won’t allow him to sit through team meetings or even fly so he seems a long way from playing football.

Also Brady seemed to indicate he would love to play for the Niners but the feeling wasn’t mutual. It’s going to be either the Pats or the Bucs.

  15. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

This guy shoots for the moon, is it realistic?

  16. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Read first paragraph and tell me it ain’t so. A killer CB is all I ask to get us over the top.

  17. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

With the deals starting if AA is retained to a long term deal it would have happened by now. Hmmmmm.

  18. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

49ers scheduled for unrestricted free agency & can begin negotiating w/other teams at 9AM:

    Jimmie Ward
    Ronald Blair
    Sheldon Day
    Levine Toilolo
    Ben Garland
    Shon Coleman
    Damontre Moore
    Jordan Matthews
    Dontae Johnson

    Glad Armstead wasn’t tagged.

  20. bullitNo Gravatar says:

This trade has tilted the balance in the NFC West and I’m stunned.

    Per Yahoo Sports

“The Houston Texans made the Arizona Cardinals better on Monday.

Via Houston Chronicle reporter John McClain, the Texans are trading three-time All-Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins to Arizona, where he’ll pair with Larry Fitzgerald.

Hopkins and a fourth-round pick are headed to the Cardinals, while the Texans will receive running back David Johnson, a second-round draft pick this year and a fourth-round pick next year”

I wonder if Lynch ever had a conversation with Houston. Hopkins is a top 3 receiver in the NFL in my book. Now we get to see him twice a year.

  21. bullitNo Gravatar says:

If I were Lynch I would’ve traded Mostert or Breida plus our #1 pick and even thrown in a #3 pick for next year for Hopkins.

  22. winderNo Gravatar says:

The Cardinals just got really good. To me Hopkins is probably the best WR in the league. Gotta give credit to AZ for pulling that one off, they dump an over-the-hill Johnson and come up smelling like a rose.

  23. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

49ers have traded Buckner to Colts for 13th pick in the draft.

  24. winderNo Gravatar says:

Didn’t see that one coming. That changes a lot of things. The colts paid dearly but they got one of the best Dlineman in the league.

  25. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Hey Bullit – Diggs dealt to Buffalo –

Bills get Vikes WR Diggs for package of picks … For the second time today, one of the NFL’s top WRs is on the move as Buffalo has reportedly acquited Stefon Diggs from Minnesota in exchange for the Bills’ 1st, the 22nd overall, 5th and 6th round picks this year and a 4th in 2021. To complete the deal, Buffalo will send the Vikings a 7th rounder. With the acquisition of a net three picks for next month’s draft, Minnesota now has 13 total selections, one less than Miami which leads the league with 14. Earlier today, Houston stunned the league by sending star WR DeAndre Hopkins to Arizona for a separate package of picks.

  26. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

I’m seeing a very heavy run on WRs in RD1 next month.
Having acquired Pick 13 for DeFo puts us right in the wheelhouse for any position they feel is needed.

WR/CB might well be the first options to consider too, though a replacement for DeFo might stand some consideration.

I’ve gotta reexamine the options I passed over now.

  27. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

UGA OT Andrew Thomas is also a possibility at 13 now IMO.

    6’5″/315 – 5.22/40 – 1.83 10YD Split – 36-1/8″ Arms.
Highly athletic and very much an option to replace Joe.

  28. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Niners have a3 year deal in place for S Jimmy Ward and also a one year deal for OT Shon Coleman

  29. bullitNo Gravatar says:

In my mind they made the move to draft a WR. My pick would be Jerry Jeudy but the fly in the ointment is the Raiduhs picking at 12 who might covet him. What will help the Niners if there is a run on QBs in the pick before them.If 4 QBs are taken that enhances their chances (Burrow, Tua, Hebert and Love)

  30. bullitNo Gravatar says:

DsFo signed a deal for 21 mil a year. Armstead’s deal is team friendly with 2020’s cap hit arounf $6mil and 2021 at $12 mil and the bigger money kicking in in 2022.

Buckner’s deal would have made it a lot tougher to sign Ward and eventually Kittle.

  31. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Ripple effect of DeFo’s contract is it puts Clowney out of reach for the Seahags because Clowney will look for a contact in the $25 mil per year range. Yesterday the Seahags went with DT Jarron Reed who’s re-signing boosts their interior Dline.

  32. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

I was leaning toward Jeudy as well Bullit.
CeeDee Lamb is a bit slow in terms of timed 40 but….so was a guy named Rice.
I like the possibility of grabbing a stud on either side of the Line also.

13 makes a LOT of options available.

I’ll live with this group now for the OLine –
Peart would be a steal in the Mid RDs.

UGA OT Andrew Thomas (6’5″/315) (5.22)
Tx Tech OT Terence Steele (6’6″/312) (5.03)
SC St OT Alex Taylor (6’8″/308) (5.09)
UCONN OT Matt Peart (6’7″/318) (5.06)
UNC OT Charlie Heck (6’8″/311) (5.16)

  33. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

I’m redoing some other options now that we jumped into Prime Real Estate again 😀

  34. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

  36. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Per NBCBA Sports the 49er draft situation

    49ERS 2020 DRAFT PICKS
First round: (No. 13 overall from Indianapolis via Buckner trade)
    First round: (No. 31 overall)
Fifth round: No. 11 (No. 156 overall from Denver)
Fifth round: No. 31 (No. 176 overall)
Sixth round: No. 31 (No. 210 overall)
Seventh round: No. 3 (No. 217 overall from Detroit)
Seventh round: No. 31 (No. 245 overall)

    -The 49ers acquired Denver’s pick in the fifth round, along with Emmanuel Sanders, in exchange for their own pick in the third and fourth rounds;
    -The 49ers traded a second-round pick to Kansas City for DE Dee Ford;
-The 49ers acquired Detroit’s seventh-round pick in the trade that sent Eli Harold to the Lions.

  37. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Jerrick MacKinnon has revamped his contract so he can remain with the Niners next year.
Also the Niners signed Ronald Blair to another one year deal

  38. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Mackinnon is going to play for minimum wage

“Adam Caplan says it’s a one-year veteran minimum for McKinnon’s years of service ($920k) plus his per game roster bonuses ($250k.)”

  39. bullitNo Gravatar says:

C/OG Ben Garland signs on for another year with the Niners. That gives them solid depth at interior line positions

  40. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Rams fired DC Wade Phillips and continue the free fall of their defense

    Rams’ defensive line lost:

    – Michael Brockers
    – Cory Littleton
    – Dante Fowler

Yikes, that’s what happens when you pay Goff/Gurley/Cooks/Donald/Ramsey so much money.

Because of their bonehead moves Rams might be bottom feeders this year in NFC West

  41. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“49ers just informed starting guard Mike Person that he is being released, per source.”

  42. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Looks like Brunskill is the new starting right guard.

  43. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

    Maybe not.

“The 49ers have agreed to terms with former NYJets guard Tom Compton on a one-year deal.”

  44. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Brunskill graded out higher than Person last year. And KS loves him. I figure he’s got the inside track. But Compton gives us a backup plan.

  45. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Sleeper time. Texas Center Zach Shackleford is a 4 year starter and was the All Big 12 Center. He grades out as a 4th/5th rounder
but he’s been compared to Alex Mack.
Might be a good pick if he’s there as he would be a good anchor for the line./

  46. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

    Todd Gurley released.

  47. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Looks like Sean Payton has the virus.

  48. NJ49ERNo Gravatar says:

    I’ll check him out Bullit.

  49. bullitNo Gravatar says:

This has come out that Belichick offered Brady to the Niners instead of Jimmy but Kraft quashed it. Makes you think what might have been.

  50. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Looks like Sanders is signing with the Saints.

  51. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

I like how this FO operates. Ten year plan to stay on top. Do not overpay and end up like the Rams. Avoided DeFo cap carnage and tip toes of father time risk with Sanders.

AA is a complementary DT/DE and took one for the team. Can we find a young DeFo and should we. They cannot squander high picks. Lesson learned with Solly and Foster.

Detailed and credible draft board. See how it plays out on draft weekend, whenever that is. These guys know how to find value at a slot.

  52. bullitNo Gravatar says:

I believe you shouldn’t use your top pick on similar position because you will run into the same situation with Armstead and Buckner.
We all know down the line that Bosa is going to be big bucks and a must to keep on the team.

Drafting a defensive lineman with a first pick puts you in the same situation as this year making it hard to keep both.

A while back Baalke used two first rounders to draft Anthony Davis and Iupati. They could only afford to keep one.

You can end up like the Rams with Aaron Donald and nobody else on your Dline. Last year they got rid of Suh and this year Brockers and Fowler along with Clay Matthews. Rams salary is with Goff, Cooks, Donald and Ramsey. Can you say last place?

  53. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

FO has the Bill Walsh in them. Everyone is tradeable, even a star hitting the inevitable down curve at their position. Staley before the trade deadline in October?

Lots of talk about CB1 at #13 and WR1 at #31. Sherman will start to fade. Jimmy does not have the arm of Mahomes, can we take full advantage of a Jeudy or Lamb. What if Tristan Wirfs drops to #13?

Day 1 and 2 of draft weekend will be exciting in ninerland.

Brunskill only 6’5″ 300 for an OG. Alarming? DT’s push the pocket. We saved on cap with exit of DeFo and Sanders. Keep Sherman at least one more year to impart his expertise in the DB room. CB, WR1, DT, and OT with more FA dollars to target versus limited high draft picks.

  54. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Maybe those extra FA dollars need to help get DeFo’s successor in FA, if anyone worth a sh#& is still left. Find the young DeFo in later years.

Cap friendly deals with AA and Ward were done for a reason. We have been there before, but a 2021 2nd and trade for a high dollar young CB or DT before this draft?

We are trying to compete for and maybe win the SB this year, right. Or God forbid, maybe OBJ knocks down his contract demands since WR is very good in this draft.

  55. bullitNo Gravatar says:

They are bringing back Coleman with the intent on grooming him to be Staley’s eventual replacement.

I think Lamb will be another Crabtree and not as explosive as Jeudy or Ruggs. Still with the Raiduhs picking in front of the Niners at 12 they are looking to have their pick of the litter.

Would be open to flip the 13th pick if Jeudy is gone, for 2 picks in the top 40 and an additional pick in top 100.

  56. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

I don’t even think Brunskill is 300, which is why he was not drafted. But he’s technically very sound and he moves well. In Kyle’s system that counts for a lot. PFF had him graded out very good for a rookie, better than Person IIRC. As Bobb McKittrick once showed, there’s more than one way to skin a cat, or block a DT. Results are what matters.

Thoughts on DeFo: I hate to lose a very good DL, but it is what it is. The Cap Era makes modern day Fearsome Foursomes or Purple People Eaters an ephemeral thing. It does occur to me that any guy who is the 4th with Bosa, Ford, and Armstead is probably going to see ONLY single team blocking. Hence even a decent starter will get the opportunities to look pretty damned good. D.J. looked pretty disruptive before he got hurt – very quick off the ball. And he’s good against the run. He might be the guy who starts, with Thomas and Blair in the rotation again.

  57. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Have always been expecting the best from Shon. Has size and quick feet for pass pro and OZ. A lot of people hoping he stays healthy and a quality starter. 3rd pick with CLE a while ago so talent is there, just needed upper body weight training.

  58. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Grump, just an observation. You don’t mean DJ Jones as a 4 down DT, unless against a run heavy O. Great thing about AA and DeFo is hard for a QB to see around them, especially illy with hands up. Better to have a 3 tech at least 6’3″.

  59. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

“The NFL Draft will look different this year. The clubs’ selection of players will proceed as scheduled April 23-25. However, public events in Las Vegas are cancelled. Fans can still follow the draft day excitement on TV, and the NFL is exploring innovative options for how the process will be conducted and will share that information as it becomes available.”

So in almost 5 weeks the draft is definitely happening. Sure looks like the first 2 picks will be CB and WR1. Tradedown could give us three picks in Rd 1 and 2. Also suspect a pick from day 2 in 2021 draft will be part of a trade.

  60. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

With AA on board big DE on base downs and pass rushing undertackle on nickel is covered. Blair and Solly compete for same positions. One probably gets packaged in a trade.

Do not have luxury of carrying both. Roster position for extra OL, WR, or DB. Seems Solly gets bundled in a trade for a 3rd or 4th Rd pick.

  61. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Raiduhs signed FA former Philadelphia Eagles receiver Nelson Agholor
Saturday. He was a former first round pick .
Could this possibly mean they draft a different position at #12 giving the Niners a shot at their preferred pick? Stay tuned…

  62. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Anyway hope everyone is well as we in the Bay Area start week 2 of sheltering in place. I actually went to work this past week because if you work for the County you are considered a disaster relief worker and considered “essential” personnel. However since I’m an old fart, I’m considered “at risk” and it’s a good idea not to be a hero and expose myself and family to something that might kill me and force me to miss seeing a sith Lombardi trophy.

What is happening is really something out of Hollywood and you have to wonder how did this happen with all sports suspended and the state of California shut down. Country needs leadership and guidance and not spin and talking points. Right now things are a dumpster fire out of control. Time to do whatever it takes to squash this that threatens us all.

NFL is about to move the draft out of Vega$ and into studio which makes sense not having perhaps thousands of team officials, media and television technical people travelling to Sin City which is also shut down.

  63. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    sith should read sixth Lombardi

And going forward I will be sitting at home until they say it’s safe to live life normally.

Going to the supermarket is an unreal experience as there is a sense of panic which leads to hoarding and the markets placing limits on items they are short of.

  64. winderNo Gravatar says:

There is a lot of irresponsibility out there, the last few time I went to the store families with kids who were obviously sick were walking around shopping. I know if you are a single parent and can’t find someone to watch the kids for a short time i could understand it. People should leave their kids at home or in the car with one of the parents while the other shops. I will never underestimate the stupidity of Americans again.

  65. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

A replacement for DeFo since all of our DT type guys are too small. Is this guy worth a trade for a 2021 pick. He was a NYJ first rounder.
