Mo, Mo Money

The NFL owners and their entourages are gathered in Orlando this week. The entourages of these gents, of course, bears no resemblence to the entourages of mega-star athletes. Mega-star bodyguards look like bouncers. Billionaire bodyguards look like Secret Service agents. You won’t see any of them wide-legging across a room while holding their pants up with one hand and communicating with their fingers on the other.

For those of you who don’t pay much attention to the boys behind the boys, here’s a rough estimate of them:

  • Paul Allen, Seahawks: $15 billion
  • Stanley Kroenke, Rams: $5 billion
  • Stephen Ross, Dolphins: $4.8 billion
  • Malcolm Glazer, Buccaneers: $4.4 billion
  • Woody Johnson, Jets: $3.5 billion
  • Steve Tisch/John Mara, Giants: $3.4 billion
  • Shahid Khan, Jaguars: $2.5 billion
  • Jerry Jones, Cowboys: $2.7 billion
  • Robert Kraft, Patriots: $2.3 billion
  • Bob McNair, Texans: $2 billion
  • Stephen Bisciotti, Ravens: $1.6 billion
  • Arthur Blank, Falcons: $1.7 billion
  • Jim Irsay, Colts: $1.5 billion
  • Jimmy Haslam, Browns: $1.45 billion
  • Zygi Wilf, Vikings: $1.3 billion
  • Virginia McClaskey, Bears: $1.3 billion
  • Bud Adams estate, Titans: $1.25 billion
  • Martha Ford, Lions: $1.25 billion
  • Dan Snyder, Washington: $1.2 billion
  • Tom Benson, Saints: $1.1 billion
  • Jed York via Momma, 49ers: $1.1 billion
  • Jeff Lurie, Eagles: $1.1 billion
  • Jerry Richardson, Panthers: $1.1 billion
  • Alex Spanos, Chargers: $1 billion
  • Pat Bowlen, Broncos: $1 billion
  • Clark Hunt (split 4 ways), Chiefs: $1 billion
  • Mike Brown, Bengals: $905 million
  • Ralph Wilson, Bills: $900 million
  • Dan Rooney, Steelers: $500 million
  • Mark Davis via Al, Raiders: $500 million
  • Bill Bidwill, Cardinals: N/A

F. Scott Fitzgerald: “The rich are different from you and me.”

Ernest Hemingway: “Yes. They have more money.”

None of them will have much to say this week, though Woody Johnson of the Jets tip-toed near the Tampering Zone on Sunday, indicating his team might have an interest in Eagles’ WR Desean Jackson. Both the 49ers and Seahawks have disavowed having any such interest. Another talented headcase nobody much wants to have on their team.

Except maybe a QB with a big arm and no deep threat. Hmmm. Do we know of one? Colin Kaepernick is allegedly friends with Desean, which is not particularly encouraging, and would allegedly love to have him in red and gold. Sure. We could put his locker next to Anquan Boldin and see how that worked out.

But it’s been disavowed. Disavowals sometimes bear a resemblance to truth, but not as a rule. Generally, they are spewed out to make reporters quit asking questions. It doesn’t mean Trent Baalke couldn’t trot Jackson out in a couple of weeks and proudly welcome the little dipshit to the team.

I’m mostly inclined to believe this particular disavowal, though. Two weeks into Free Agency, it’s a lot more likely we’ll hear Baalke announce the signing of “Who?” this week than any household name.

So our owners are worth only 1.1 billion while in our own division we go up against 15 and 5 bil? The Yorks need to get their greedy billionaire hands in some pockets to get their worth up their a little higher! Just take in easy on us fans! LOL!

  2. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The Yorks are majority owners. There are other partners like their ex-President Gideon Yu, Mark Wan and John Sobrato who are also listed as owners.

  3. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Well, in 1993 (per SI) Bidwell was worth $120 mill. 19th among NFL owners. I’m sure he’s somewhere in the same general area.

  4. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Harbaugh speaks out. He’s in uniform. He called the rumors about his discontent and friction with Baalke %6$*ing BS.

  5. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

49ers expect to add a compensatory pick for a total of 11. Baalke is talking like he expects to use them all.

  6. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“WR Kassim Osgood will re-sign with the 49ers today.”

  7. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Not totally a “who?”, but in the vicinity.

  8. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“The 49ers’ compensatory pick is at the end of the third round, No. 100 overall.”

  9. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

49ers have six picks in the first three rounds, six picks in the top 100.

Can’t complain about the way Baalke has played the FA game in recent years.
He’s always been careful with respect to how he makes Roster moves, evident by gaining less players then he loses.

Great position to be in, 6 Picks within the Top 100 suggests opportunities, to get youth and depth infused to an already talented Roster.

The NFL is about talent evaluation and, Drafting for the future.
Not spending like a drunken sailor on shore leave, looking for an immediate benefit.

Our FO is doing it right.

  13. robNo Gravatar says:

i will also admit to having thought gabbert had a shot at being a good QB coming out that year ! maybe harbaugh can get something out of him guys !!!

  14. robNo Gravatar says:

btw the debartolo’s together are worth over three billion !

  15. robNo Gravatar says:

imho it looks like we’ll be going for a CB with our top pick this year

  16. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

That’s the idea, ROB!!!!! Generate some value around Gabbert and trade him next year. Draft a QB this year to build up as well.

  17. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Perrish Cox just signed for another year with the Niners per his agent.

  18. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

One of our featured owners has departed from our list: RIP, Ralph Wilson.

  19. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

And there was much rejoicing. In Florida.

CSN is reporting that Carlos Rogers might get a look from the Raiduhs who are still looking for CBs.

  21. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Jared Allen signed with the Bears. He didn’t want to play part time for the Seahags on the cheap.

Kick-offs are staying at the 35.

Jed York cleared the air about the Harbaugh trade to Cleveland. It ends up being about what I expected it was. IMO, where York messed up was in allowing the rampant speculation to escalate into a story when there really never was a story. Here is what Jed said:

“They called. We said we didn’t have any interest,” York said of a potential trade of Harbaugh. “There was not a lot of shock or surprise on their side.”

York said he immediately tried to get in touch with Harbaugh to inform him of the Browns’ inquiry.

“He wasn’t in the office,” York said. “So I talked to him probably an hour after the Browns thing. I called. There was no answer. I texted and said, ‘Hey, give me a ring.’ He was at preschool with (his daughter). ‘Listen, I just want to ask you, was there any interest in your part? This is the phone call I got.’ “

Harbaugh called him back and said, according to York, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“And that was the end of it,” York said.

  24. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Harbaugh says Frank Gore has 3 good years left.
If they manage his carries and keep him fresh but because of his age he’ll take more time to recover from injury.
If they re-sign him his contract will be similar to Justin Smith’s which is cap friendly.

  25. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Hmmmm. I hadn’t thought about re-signing Gore to a friendlier deal mainly because I don’t think Gore goes on after this year. Harbaugh never wants to lose anyone, Frank included. But even he said, it’s a year-to-year thing. Maybe a 3/$9 mill deal with 1 year and $5 mill guaranteed. The Niners obviously feel that Lattimore is the back of the future, so it would be foolish to commit to anything longer than this season.

If Lattimore doesn’t work out, then we cross that bridge after this season.

  26. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Harbaugh hinted to reporters that we might see more 3 WR sets this coming year. One reporter asked if we draft a WR if he would even see the field since we don’t use many 3 WR sets. They talked about using the formation on 3rd down and Harbaugh said or even 1st and 2nd down. During the conversation he even mentioned the coaches doing better for the players. Hopefully that meant better play calling. It is what is seemed like he was alluding to. One can hope!
