The NFL Competition Committee proposed thirteen new rule changes and seven other Bylaw proposals last Wednesday. Since, at most, there will only be a handful of these items actually adopted by the league, it’s hard to get excited or depressed by the announcement.
Mostly, I suspect there are some summer vacations taking place at League expense for the members of the Committee. If you have a Committee, you have to seem like you’re doing some work, so 20 public issuancies probably seemed like a good number to heave out there for consumption and discussion. One thing I can’t imagine is these guys actually having any long and intense discussions involving weighty and sensitive matters.
Maybe I’m just being jaded. The Competition Committee consists of the following 9 guys:
- Rich McKay, Atlanta Falcons, Chairman
- Jeff Fisher, St. Louis Rams
- Stephen Jones, Dallas Cowboys
- Marvin Lewis, Cincinnati Bengals
- John Mara, New York Giants
- Mark Murphy, Green Bay Packers
- Ozzie Newsome, Baltimore Ravens
- Rick Smith, Houston Texans
- Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh Steelers
And is not to be confused with the Competition Sub-Committee and its 8 members, which reports to the full Committee:
- John Madden, Chairman
- Tom Coughlin, New York Giants
- Leslie Frazier, Minnesota Vikings
- John Harbaugh, Baltimore Ravens
- Joe Philbin, Miami Dolphins
- Andy Reid, Kansas City Chiefs
- Ron Rivera, Carolina Panthers
- Mike Smith, Atlanta Falcons
That’s 17 fellows yammering away about, I guess, competition. Seems a bit much. I’d suspect some lurid behind-the-scenes behavior in this sort of all male gathering, but if you scan the names, there aren’t many party hearty fellows in the group. Stern comes to mind. Buttoned-down types, give or take John Madden. Our own coach, Jim Harbaugh, would certainly be out of place among these fellows.
It’s occasionably fashionable to call the NFL the No Fun League, and perhaps these two groups exemplify that notion.
Such will not be the case Sunday, when the NFL owners gather in Orlando for the annual league meetings. You can bet these deep pockets, secret society types will have plenty of ribald entertainment available. Indianapolis owner Jim Irsay will not be in attendance this year, alas, since his ribaldry went public this week with a good old fashioned DUI, controlled substance bust, and he is currently sequestered in rehab.
We’ll say one thing for Irsay, he didn’t let being a billionaire get in the way of still driving himself around town, instead of taking the limo route. Unfortunately, we commoners will no doubt be deprived in the future of his legendary over-the-top, incomprehensible Twitter rants. I’d say the Indy organization will pull the plug on that toy. Os LOng, jIMblo.
It looks obvious that the players don’t want an 18 game season after reading new NFLPA president Winston’s comments. He said there will be no 18 game season under his watch.
He didn’t need no stinking committee.
I don’t think he even had a stinking badge!
Schefter is reporting Raiduhs trading for Schaub giving up a 3rd day draft pick.
Winston is just a figurehead like his predecessors Dminique Foxworth, Kevin Mawae, Troy Vincent, Trace Armstrong and Mike Kenn.
The Executive Director is DeMaurice Smith and he still holds all the power.
Gene Upshaw was the president and then he became Executive Director and ruled for 25 years.
Ex Niner Kermit Alexander was President for one year in 1975
Dashon is finally tired of the fines (his team should be tired of the personal foul penalties)
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/03/21/tired-of-getting-fined-dashon-goldson-hires-a-tackling-coach/
I suppose a coverage coach will be next for Dashon . . .
DeMaurice Smith might have the power but if the players aren’t happy with him they’ll fire him. If they are adamant about not playing 18 games and Smith pushes for it he’ll be gone. Smith would not be that naïve. What Winston said is reflective of the vast majority of players. IMO, the NFL would have to pay the players more than they want to give to get those two games. The NFL can get one more week by adding another bye.
The Raiduhs picking up Schaub is actually a smart move.
If they think Schaub is a better QB NOW than any of QBs in the draft and there are no franchise QBs at the 5th pick then they did the right thing.
They now have a shot at Sammy Watkins, Kalil Mack or one of the OTs Robinson or Matthews.
Any QB they picked would not save the coach’s or GM’s job.
Schaub is on the downside of his career but he has a career 90
QB rating and will be decent for a couple of years.
Per Barrows a Niner fan “noticed that the 49ers’ top college scout, Matt Malaspina, attended Middle Tennessee State’s Pro Day. The main attraction there was a cornerback, Sammy Seamster, who ran the 40 in 4.47 and 4.44 seconds, had a 35-inch vertical jump and an impressive 10-4 broad jump. Seamster has good size at 6-0 1/2, 200.”

Baalke always plucks the obsure DB on day 3 of the draft
Middle Tennessee St is where we drafted CB Don Griffin from!
He and McKyer were pretty good together.
Shaub without protection is a disaster. As noted by his 4 pick-six games in a row last year. Then again, most quarterbacks would be hard-pressed to get anything done behind a shitty line. And thew Raiders were shitty. They need help on both sides of their lines.
They have done some stuff to bolster their lines, but is it enough? Don’t know.
Skeebers – Jets have just released my 2009 draft crush Mark Sanchez. I now have closure with the err in my armchair drafting ways. As well as the Jets scouting department.
Franchise, I was just going to post that item, contemplating whether to needle you a bit in the process, but you beat me to it. Jets also signed Mike Vick, to keep the humor alive in New York.
The legend continues as Bullit calls them the Jest!
Browns should sign Sanchez and let Norv Turner resurrect him.
Franchise- Spitblood was a bigger Mark Sanchez fan than you. Spitty keeps saying I wanted Gabbert but that is not true. The QB I missed on was Weeden. Jury is still out on Ponder, he had a horrendous QB system to work in for his career so far.
Michael Vick wants to prove he’s the “top dog” by asking for #7
which is currently worn by last year’s starter Geno Smith.
Sounds like something contrived but if true that’s emasculation
and they are the Jest.
Here is a list of U$C QBs who have played in the NFL.
Mark Sanchez, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Sean Salisbury, Rodney Peete, Pat Haden, Matt Cassel, Bill Nelsen, Pete Beathard, Vince Evans, Paul McDonald, Todd Marinovich, Rob Johnson AND John David Booty.
Cal, Stanford, UCLA, Washington and Oregon have had QBs with far more successful careers than any of this bunch.
If Carson Palmer is your shining star than it’s a sad legacy when your university has so many talented recruits.
Here’s Ponder and Gabbert with Mooch

I would like to take this moment to officially shit on the University of Texas and their rich QB history in honor of Bullit.
I anticipated something like this from Berger.
Pro Football HOF QB Bobby Layne is a Texas-Ex.
Next!
Hook”em Horns!
Did Layne ever throw a pass?
Not sure . . .

Looks like the Duke fans are blaming the loss in the NCAA tournament’s first round on Tony Romo being at the game.
One QB from the 50s? That’s like glorifying the Steve Spurrier era for the 49ers.
Regarding the NYJ moves with Sanchez.
They more or less screwed him by releasing him after the Raiders made the deal for Schaub.
Word out here suggested he was anxious to have a decision made early enough to allow him the option to consider playing on the West Coast.
As for Vick and the #7 jersey, it’s been reported that the majority of Vicks’ business interests rely heavily on the #7 he has been associated with all along.
Seems Geno would do well to put a HEAVY price tag on that number.
Reminds me of when the Boz fought the NFL for his #44. He was steamrolled by the NFL AND Bo Jackson.
Sanchez will end up somewhere like Jacksonville. Or maybe he’ll catch on with the LA Kiss.
We traded for guys like Gabbert and Martin. I guess that makes us the SF Lipsticks. I could see Blaine wearing Relentlessly Red to contrast his long dirty blonde hair. And I picture Jonathan in Hot Tahiti to match his skin tone.
Maybe it’s Maybelline.
C’mon Del, Dallas signed Brandon Weeden.
Not sure whether a Summer’s Eve Douche commercial would be appropriate or, if they’ll get by with a flushable feminine cleansing cloth spot.
Ann Killion never talked again about the ugly rumor she concocted about the Baalke/Harbaugh rift when it was refuted by Boldin and touched on by some of the local beat writers. She went silent on the topic as if she never said it.
It leads to something she wrote before Baalke and Harbaugh were hired in 2011. It shows she is often on the wrong side of the topic and has an axe to grind when it comes to the Niners.

New post is up.
