Keep the Streak Alive

The New Orleans Saints come calling this Sunday, no doubt looking eagerly forward to trashing the 49ers’ woeful defense. The Saints’ defense is no top drawer outfit, either, but if the game is a shootout, who you gonna call: Drew Brees or Blaine Gabbert’s backup?

The 49ers are 10th in rushing offense so far this year, but dead last in passing. Probably not a good combo when attempting to beat the Saints, who are 3rd in passing offense. This will no doubt be yet another game where the score gets out of control in the Saints favor, leaving the Niners best weapon of little value in getting back into the game.

The trade deadline came and went this week, with no activity from the Niners. Big surprise. Trent Baalke always overvalues his “assets,” making it hard to get anything to or from this roster. Look no further than the aforementioned backup QB, who’s still on the squad almost a year after both he and the team wanted him gone.

It’s a mediocre year in the NFL. The Patriots and Cowboys have only one loss each, the Browns and Niners have one win between them, but everyone else is flirting with a .500 record and have a shot at the playoffs. At the midway point of the season, now is the time for the contenders to rise and the pretenders to sink. Or we’ll have a Goodell special, with all kinds of 9-7 teams “battling” for one-and-done in January.

The 49ers won’t be one of them, that’s for sure. In fact, it may take two or three years for the team to even accumulate a total of nine wins. Even geting to two wins this season seems like a stretch.

But they are red hot when it comes to losing. Six in a row and counting. All six losses have been double digit stompings except the Cowboys game, a relative squeaker at 24-17. Can they run it to seven? YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!

All good on Norv now? He is far better fit with JAX. Whether through positive conniving or negative stubborn stupidity, niners FO playing for highest draft pick and building through the draft.

  2. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

More on Norv. Backs up the mutual decision to leave. JAX and Norv next. SF tanking on purpose. Need to stick with Kap and Chip for #2.

  3. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

If we get Dontari Poe in FA, makes sense to go EDGE with the 1st. If a trade down then one of these?

  4. winderNo Gravatar says:

skeebs- sounds like your having some fun with this mess. I’m all for losing the rest of the year also because if nothing else Jed will have to look at it. He won’t be able to make believe it didn’t happen.

  5. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

Saints by 20 my call this week. Embrace the suck!

  6. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Demoralized. Given up. Join the crowd. Homer’s are lifeless.

Every unit of D has failed. Every unit on O, save oline, is at bottom. Schemes and coaching also contribute.

There is nothing to root for, except #1 in 2017.

The effing Browns can generate a passing and run attack.

    The season is dead.

  7. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

And several more in the most optimistic scenario. Say 2019 with good coaching and good drafting. We are what we are = victims of bad management

Meanwhile the Warriors are gelling and starting to play great basketball so there is that.

  8. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

Dubs sleeping to a loss in LA, Lakers. Luke Walton’s team did what they had to do and led all game. Cold shooting, turnovers, fouls, yuck. Work in progress

  9. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Let’s revisit the Alex Smith trade which yielded two second round picks from the Chefs.

Baalke whelled and dfealed and turned the two 2nd round picks into the following

DL Tank Carradine (second round, 2013)
LB Corey Lemonier (third round, 2013)
LB Chris Borland (third round, 2014)
RB Carlos Hyde (second round, 2014)
WR Stevie Johnson (acquired for 2015 fourth-rounder)

If Borland had not retired this might be a good trade. Hyde can’t stay healthy and is useless if his durability week to week is in question, and Carradine has done nothing when given the chance and is still trending towards being a bust.

Right now it looks like the Chefs got the better end of the deal which is another nail in Baalke’s coffin. Baalke must go.

  10. bullitNo Gravatar says:

whelled and dfealed should be wheeled and dealed

  11. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Very good article especially if you want to see Kelly flounder for another year or two.

  12. bullitNo Gravatar says:

I think the last part of this season determines Chip’s fate.
If it continues this way without any hint of improvement there’s no reason to keep him for nest year.

If Baalke goes the new GM will want to bring in his own coach.

I can still see a scenario where Jed hires the Shanahans.
Kyle Shanahan has the Falcon offense humming and they are the best week in and week out.
Last time Mike Shanahan was mentioned as interested in being the GM.

I just haven’t seen anything innovative with Chip’s offense.
Yes there is a spread but the results are much worse where the Niners ran a power running game.

  13. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Bump, gotta keep rubbing this in spit and chuck’s face. Franchise QB, indeed!

  14. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

Shanahans would be better than what we’ve seen since 49 Wins

  15. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Tampa Bay drafted kicker Roberto Aguayo 56th with their 2nd round (59th) pick in the last draft. Aguayo’s nickname is “Mr Perfect”.
Currently he is 7 out of 12 on FGs and has missed 2 extra points.

You have to ask yourself, what the hell was the Bus’s front office thinking?

Same thing with Baalke. Pinion was a wasted 5th round pick.
Pinion ranks 20th in net punting yardage. The Niners have the most punts in the league. Just feel this was a wasted pick because you can sign a free agent punter with similar results.

That is why punters are rarely drafted and the Niners would be
have been better served using that pick on a QB.

  16. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Baalke is history at end of year. The collapse of the D sealed his fate. Building D and oline was supposed to be his strengths.

Tank, Harold, and Lemonier at OLB. Nothing at ILB. Armstead at 3-4 DE (a mid 1st RD pick). Nothing at NT. Ian Williams was injured out of Note Dame and was a UDFA.

The safe play for silverspoon is fire TB and replace with Gamble. Continue losing and build through the draft. Kelly’s fate is up to him. If Kelly goes back to college then clean house at GM/HC.

  17. bullitNo Gravatar says:

There is no plan for the future because there are no QBs signed for next year.

Don’t see them retaining Kap by the structure of his new deal which gives Kap the choice to opt out of the second year.

Does not bode well for the future of the franchise where you can’t even pencil a name into the QB slot.

Failing to address the most important position on the team should be enough reason to can Baalke who has done absolutely nothing.

  18. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Regular season game against the Aints reminds me of the greatest Niner comeback in Niner history and it happened 36 years ago.

  19. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

What little reading I did of brain dead was 2017 was an option year. If he stayed with the 49ers they could cut him at any time. He has no guaranteed salary in 2017.

    Is that true?

He has a future as a 1 million a year backup somewhere, not here.

  20. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

He’s in Tebow territory now. Yes, he could be a backup somewhere, but with all the baggage, why bother?

  21. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

TB is not the only GM that let their roster’s go QB light. Not every team can count on rookies to be credible. Injuries happen.

Thought I read that SD does not have depth behind Rivers, as one example.

  22. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Wondering about a QB next year. Romo will be released. Prescott is the guy. Dallas can spend his money where it is needed.

  23. bullitNo Gravatar says:

San Diego’s backup is Kellen Clemmens and their 3rd string QB is Zack Mettenberger who was a FA but signed BY the Chargers.

They have a veteran backup and a young developmental QB and are in way better shape than the Niners are at QB

  24. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

Niners race out to a FG lead and 4 penalties on first drive

  25. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Easy drive for NO. Is 82 Fleener. Cannot stuff the run. Buckner still getting blown off the LOS? Big play blown coverage allowing a backup TE Hill a big gain.

  26. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Kaep underthrew a short crossing pattern for the INT. NO runs it back to 25.

Niners OK in red zone. On 3rd pass from 1st and goal the rookie Michael Thomas see rates from Ward for the TD.

Niners have to pass to get back in. Kaep’s time to shine.

  27. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

Saints answer with a TD. Kap answers with an INT which Brees uses for a NO TD. 14-3 NO.

  28. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

Thanks Bakken, no video here. Don’t worry Kap will pull it out of his a^^

  29. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Frank Gore with 7 yard TD run. Kaep executed two easy, designed pass plays. Ball inside 30 now.

  30. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

3rd and 6 Kap throws 5 yds to Torrey

  31. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Torrey Smith could not dance and could not take a short pass for a 1st. Guess they tried a 4th down run and a football short. No three here.

  32. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

Saints marching. Niners with 6 penalties and a turnover. Good news is we got a FG

  33. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

TD NO. Now 21-3. Getting close to my Saints by 20 call…in 2nd qtr

  34. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Short passes and runs for a TD. Our dline is losing on every rush. 2 yards or more on every rush. This will be a blowout.

This is TB’s defense, sink or swim.

  35. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

NO has double the 1st downs, double TOP and 3X the rushing yards but we got ’em 6-1 in penalties

  36. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Simple little pass in the flat to RB #32 and the Saint’s D gives him the sideline for 7 pts. Great for stats.

  37. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

DuJuan Harris 2 receptions 62 yards. 47 yard TD, due to a feeble NO LB coverage. Kaep 10 of 13 174 yards on short simple routes.

  38. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Ingram got the TD back on a run. Bethea let him get by on a 75 yard TD run. Dline is garbage. Twin ducks suck.

  39. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Nice pass to Celek and now a penalty on Celek. Little push in the back was called.

  40. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Kaep 13 of 17 for 221 yds. 1 TD 1 INT and no coverage reads necessary. Good playcalling by Chip.

  41. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

146 yards against our run D so far.

  42. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Saint’s D is shit. Easy short pass to Vance McDonald and he takes it to the house.

  43. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

Nice long TD YAC by McDonald TE from short pass by CK 28-20 NO

  44. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Nice out to #83 over Ward by Brees. #27 mugged Mike Thomas for another penalty. No harm. Short FG coming up.

  45. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

Three (3) intentional holding penalties on us to make NO burn clock. Pretty cool. Prevented a TD but NO got FG 31-20

  46. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

344 yards and 31 points by halftime? You must be playing the 49ers.

The record allowed in one game is 735, allowed by the football N.Y. Yankees to the Rams on September 28, 1951. Brees might have a shot if they keep the pedal down.

  47. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Saint’s LB’s torched, allowing short passes with receiver’s unmolested and turning upfield. Maybe NoFear can look at safety and LB coverage all first half gimmees.

  48. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Is Armstead able to play at all.

  49. SpitbloodNo Gravatar says:

Today I ran some errands, went to the gym, got ready for the week and didn’t even watch football. Crazy. I’m going to watch the Warriors at 4:30. It’s so nice not to watch football on Sundays in fall. I’m turning over a new leaf. And it’s great following college football because you don’t want to watch every game. Some games are blowouts and you know it beforehand. Who watches the NFL anymore? And for the truly sick and twisted, who watches 49er football anymore?

  50. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

The sick and twisted are voting for lesbian.

  51. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Niners easy yards all the way to the 1 where NO #54 stripped our RB and NO has it.

  52. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Kaep drilled a short pass to Torrey. Why so hard? Dropped. Celek dropped a catchall pass on this drive. Saints coverage is hot garbage. Wide separation to our open receivers.

Only impressive pass was the seam to Celek in 1st half.

  53. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

One score game, 31-23. Is this a win happening. Two crap D’s.

  54. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

First time I saw our dline stop a run at LOS. Next run picks up 1st down.

Thomas having his way against our DB’s. FG missed. Still 31-23.

  55. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Sack on Kaep. Then overthrew. He needs that clock in his head, then throw it away.

  56. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

Chip sez Kap lacks ‘reps because Blaine was the #1 for 5 games’. Will he really improve?

  57. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Second niner run stuff at LOS today. Mike Thomas making every niner DB his bitch, for a TD. #26 Ward? Did have tight coverage. Excellent throw by Brees. Lots of confidence shown there.

  58. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

Yocks! Brock gives up long TD in EZ. Bad

  59. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Vintage Kaep, drilling a short pass to Vance for the drop.

  60. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

    38-23 NO. Kap w/ 9 straight INCs

  61. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Feel sorry for our DB’s on runs. Ingram ripping another one for a 1st.

  62. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

About to pass 1,000 yards combined for both teams offense. Record is 1,133.

  63. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Not quite a record, but a turd for the ages nonetheless.

And four turnovers by our Keystone Cops offense to go with the defensive ineptitude. Smfh. This team stinks more every week. How Low Can They Go?

  64. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Key stat was the Aints had the ball for 39 mins and the Niners for 21 mins. 81 plays to 56 plays.
The defense was almost on the field twice as long as the Aints.

Next two games against Cards and Pats so tying the Niner record
    is a distinct possibility.

  65. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Our score could have been higher. Two strip tackles with NO recovery. Kilgore-Kaep fumble eventually recovered by Vacarro.

  66. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Dorsey was in, how many snaps versus Purcell. Ingram had 153 yards and Hightower 82 plus. Run D courtesy of TB. Why two 1st’s on Calais Campbell.

Williams and Dorsey are both injury prone. Why no NT in draft or FA.

  67. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Great quote from a fan in Oregon: “Don’t worry 49er fans, Trent Baalke is scouting Toledo.”

  68. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

RB Kareem Hunt from Toledo is likely why Skeebs.
Also reported that he was there for Western MI/Ball St.
WR from W MI is legit IMO –

    Comment from a Cohnhead:

Prime. Time November 6, 2016 at 6:04 pm
I also saw the inaccuracy! The poor leadership and body language when he and his teammates made mistakes.
We also witnessed that when a defense gives you no other option but to throw in the pocket and fit the ball in tight windows or outside the numbers he could not execute.
Poe Parrot, don’t insult the blog anymore. We all know #7 is limited. No more of your horse crap!

  70. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

We play a real defense next Sunday. The ARI injuries are RG and LT are IR’D, Mathieu is out. Chandler Jones, Calais Campbell, and Kemdiche(sp?) will bring the heat.

Our oline was up to pass pro today. Next week is a much bigger test. Will Kaep still have his flaws under pressure. Will his skinny body get injured.

  71. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

The streak is alive and growing. I called for a 20 point NO win but Saints could only manage to beat our Niner mule by 18. D did their part but the O showed some life and ruined everything. Basta!

  72. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

    New post is up.

  73. bullitNo Gravatar says:

There is talk that Carolina might let Kawann Short walk rather than pay him just like they let Norman go at CB.

He would come at a high cost but would stabilize the Dline.

Since one of the weaknesses of the defense is lack of quality LBs why not go back to the 4-3 as your base defense.? You have a great MLB in Bowman and you need to draft or find a LB who can cover TEs as the SAM.

  74. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

If niners are looking for coverage LB’s, obviously stay away from NO.

Short is their undertackle. Star Lotulelei is the one we want and they locked him up. Still would take Short over the Duck bean pole Armstead.

Would absolutely, in a heartbeat, overpay for FA’s Short and Poe. Yorks need the shock of that to resuscitate their fanbase.
