The 49ers travel to St. Louis this weekend for what might be the last time, if rumors of the Rams moving to Los Angeles prove accurate. The Rams are in second place in the NFC West at 3-3. That’s right on pace for an 8-8 season, which Rams HC Jeff Fisher has made kind of his specialty over the past 21 years or so, while also managing to be a highly respected coach. In fact, his career record as an HC with the Titans and Rams is 170–156–1.
But with the Cardinals and Seahawks both looking vulnerable, and the Niners looking awful, 8-8 for the Rams this year might be challenging for the NFC West title.
49er players spent the week denying rumors that the locker room was a mess and Colin Kaepernick was an outcast. Last year, the players spent the year making the same denials, only those rumors concerned former HC Jim Harbaugh. Notice the word “former.” Next year, we’ll no doubt be referring to Kaepernick as the former QB.
All of which screams: if it walks like a York and quacks like a York, it’s a York. Leaks and rumors are the way Jed York does business.
Sunday’s game marks the mid point of the 2015 season. For those who expected a fun, scrappy, contending team — our condolences. Bummer. For those who expected a steaming pile of camel dung — time flies when you’re having fun!
The most positive development of the first half of the season has been the crumbling support for York and GM Trent Baalke. Kaepernick has taken a beating, for sure, along with the offensive line, but by and large the players have not been vilified, and they don’t deserve to be. This season is a York/Baalke fiasco and these two chumps are being mercilessly mocked and ridiculed from sea to shining sea.
This year’s version of backroom, back-handed, back-stabbing, spineless Yorkian behavior has been dubbed “Whispers.” This is an apparent upgrade over the basic old fashioned “leaks.” I’m sure York keeps a guy on the payroll to come up with these Madison Avenue descriptions. It’s not true, possibly, that Matt Maiocco is on the York payroll, but he initiated the term, no doubt from reliable sources called Jed York, and always seems to be the one closest to Jed’s blowhole. I’m not running Maiocco down. Somebody has to be in charge of prying the spilt beans out of York’s basement hideaway. In return, Maiocco is always the beat writer who’s least critical of the round headed kid’s behavior.
At any rate, whispers it is. And we’re now one week past the “whisper” that “something big” was going to happen. And nothing has. Jed probably has no idea what kind of “big” thing to do and he’s just polling the area for the best idea of what other people think is the best big thing to do. Our leader. Tee it up, Lucy.
