The 49ers catch a break this week, as the awful Detroit Lions come to town, fresh off a week one 48-17 thrashing by the New York Jets. A rather inauspicious debut for Lions’ HC Matt Patricia, who begins his post-Belichick career with a resounding thud.
The Niners should win this game easily, even if Robbie Gould has to kick 10 field goals. The defense is stout enough to handle the one-pronged attack of the Lions and the Detroit defense does not seem to exist. If fact, this game could be a laugher, somewhat of a rare occurrence for the Niners in recent years. The only thing going for the Lions is Patricia’s familiarity with Jimmy Garoppolo from their three years together in New England.
The Rams were the only NFC West team to win on opening weekend, but the Cardinals were the only one of the losers to get their butts kicked. It seems safe to say that at least the 49ers will be relinquishing their grip on last place in the division this coming season and Arizona will be replacing them.
Of course, it’s probably also fair to point out that the first three weeks of the season are always a bit unconventional, so we might be back here next week singing somewhat of a different tune.
“Rookie Dante Pettis will get first NFL start against the Lions, and undrafted rookie guard Najee Toran might be in the starting lineup, too.”
Gulp.
42-16 Niners.

“WR Josh Gordon knows he has no say in where he is traded, but the two places he’s hoping to land are with the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys.”
I’m surprised Rob hasn’t already endorsed this.
I would consider Dez, but no way with Gordon. I believe in second chances but when your on you 5th and 6th is just doesn’t make sense.
Dez hasn’t been a factor since 2014 and he wants too much money.
Gordon is as dependable as Aldon was and Niners don’t need that week to week drama. To think he’s cleaning up his act by switching teams is really fantasy football.
If Shanahan/Lynch want to spend big money they trade for Bell and that solves red zone and rushing question marks.
Niners win today 30-23
Reaching for solutions among other peoples’ problems rarely results in a positive outcome. Even the Raiders are starting to figure that out. You might get lucky once in a while, but mostly, you’re going to get a load of trouble.
49ers inactives:
WR Marquise Goodwin (quadricep)
LB Malcolm Smith (hamstring)
G Joshua Garnett (toe)
OL Erik Magnuson (hamstring)
OT Shon Coleman
G Matt Tobin
DT Jullian Taylor
Person not inactive? Guess he’s starting RG.
Cleveland is going to release Gordon tomorrow. Gordon is radioactive.
Browns actually winning despite 2 missed FGs and 1 XP by their kicker and this is indoors.
Browns would be looking for a new kicker tomorrow too.
Frank Gore just passed Curtis Martin and is now 4th on all time rushing
list with 14k+ yards.
Nest opponent the Chef’s QB Mahomes has 5 TD paases in 3 quarters.
That’s 9 TDs in less then 2 games. Whoa Nelly!!!
Mahomes just threw TD #10, his 6th of the day
Browns kicker Zane Gonzales just missed the XP that would’ve given the Browns the lead. They are now tied 18-18 with the Aints.
He’s missed 2 FGs and 2 XPs. No way they don’t replace the kicker.
The game is indoors in the Superdome.
Pretty devastating if you’re a Cleveland Brown.
Some people on this team better learn to pass block, and to cover receivers, or there’s going to be a lot of laughers this year. And we won’t be the ones laughing.
Nice work on the TD drive by Garoppolo and an nicely designed play for the TD. Two O-line penalties could have staled the drive but JG kept it going.
Denver beats Seattle and now is getting shut out by Oakland. Weird.
Outplaying and beating them, but we haven’t put them away. One score game.
Whew!!! Too close for comfort and shouldn’t have been that close.
Dodged a bullet when Lions making a fortunate defensive penalty.
Offense needs to learn to close out games but I’ll take the W as losing sucks.
Tough to be the corner opposite Dick Sherman. The other team is reluctant to pick on Dick so he still has it.
Reminds me when the Niners had Jimmy Johnson and the opponent constantly went after opposite CB Kermit Alexander.
Witherspoon was getting picked on and torched until replaced.
I thought Chris Spielman did a great job of color analysis. It wasn’t just the usual cliches. I loved him talking about reading the OL head directions to indicate run or pass. I hope the producers let him keep working this way. I may seek out games he’s working just to listen to him. I guess Romo was like that last year, too, to a lot of acclaim, but I didn’t watch too many of his games.
Vontae Davis, Vernon’s brother who’s a CB for Buffalo shocked his team by retiring during halftime of today’s game.
That’s a new one but the NFl is different nowadays and nothing should surprise anyone.
Fletch
Spielman was refreshing and gave superb analysis. Considering he is an ex Detroit Lion he was very objective and called a neutral game.
Good news is Ruben Foster is back this coming week.
If we don’t get our issues sorted at OL and CB we won’t win 8 this year. More like 5 or 6.
Detroit played a very flawed sloppy game, we were at home, and we still won by a slim margin.
Fortunately, there IS time to fix the problems. But anyone who was drinking the Kool-aid that this would be a playoff team, might want to moderate their pharmaceutical intake. We’ve made some progress but still have miles to go.
I didn’t like Jimmy taking all those sacks. What happened to his quick release and lateral pocket movement. And, I don’t think he did a real good job of reading the defense. But, WTF do I know. What I do know is that Saleh’s defense doesn’t scare anyone. They better buckle down for KC next week or it will be ugly.
Meanwhile, Tennessee Titans led by Blaine Gabbert were victorious over the Houston Texans. Compare Texans D with Lions D.
Winder I’m already pondering the severity of the A$$-kicking that awaits us in KC next week.
My early line is a loss somewhere between 10-17pts.
My own O/U is whether Mahomes hits 40pts before halftime.
If Saleh plays coverage, Hunt runs for 200.
If we don’t score a Defensive TD or 2 this is likely to be a thrashing.
New post is up.
