It’s been two months now since the 2013 season ended, but it feels more like two years. This is either the longest, quietest offseason in memory, or it’s time to go see my dementia doctor.
The Draft should be two weeks from Thursday, but the league pushed it back two more weeks to May 8th this year. Thanks, suits.
I’d say by now the 49ers draft board is 99% set. There’s still time for one of their prospects to get arrested for one thing or another, and slip down the board or off it completely.
Only a month ago, the 49er FO was depicted by Ann Killion as a powder keg of egos and dysfunction, but that story got laughed out of town and Ms. Killion has been pretty much MIA since, never once insisting her “sources” were accurate and she stood by them. I suppose we should thank Ann for trying to jump start the offseason news, but it was a woeful effort all in all.
The team will be playing the AFC West and the NFC East this coming year, so we’ll put them down for 8-0 against that bunch, pending divisional game outcomes. The exact schedule will be released sometime in the next week or two, pending whatever last minute screw jobs the geeks are concocting in their top secret concoction laboratories.
This is the first time in Jim Harbaugh’s reign as HC that the team is not the defending NFC West champion. A distinction now owned by Seattle. Harbaugh isn’t the only 49er FO guy eating the second banana lunch, either. It was four years ago last month that GM Scot McCloughan was shown the door and replaced by Trent Baalke. Now McCloughan is one of the architects of the SB champion Seahawks and Baalke is having lunch with Harbaugh at the also ran table.
At least none of our lads are strutting around the country basking in the glow of being a Super Bowl loser this offseason. That was a bad look. If Joe Montana was in his grave, he’d have rolled over on that one. As it is, he’s suffering along with the rest of us. It’s no fun at all being second best — even once, let alone two years in a row.
The reason the draft was moved back was Radio City Music Hall was booked for a Rockettes show through April.
Supposedly that’s the case next year too.
Time for them to move the draft to a different venue in a different city on a yearly basis and move it back into April.
If they had the draft in the Bay Area I’d attend provided they made the tickets reasonable for all fans.
The draft shouldn’t be locked into to Radio City Music Hall and NYC.
Jim Irsay might be and probably is a drunk drug addict scumbag.
Some say there is a double standard because players have to abide by a certain standards that their contracts spell out.
That’s the distinction that has to be made. Players/Coaches/Front Office are all employees.
Jim Irsay is an owner which makes him the employer.
Until he is convicted of a serious crime (felony) the NFL will not lift a finger until the legal process plays out.
Want to be your own boss, own your own business and not be beholden to anyone.
Irsay and Haslim will face discipline if and when they get convicted.
That being said there might be more to the Irsay story that has come out.
http://www.indystar.com/story/news/2014/04/06/colts-owner-jim-irsays-troubles-go-beyond-march-arrest/7368789/
The *real* reason the NFL moved the Draft back two weeks was to extend the league’s relevance calendar and garner bigger advertising dollars during the May TV sweeps. Think the NFL will move it back when the Rockettes aren’t skipping and kicking at Radio City Music Hall? Think again.
Believing any utterance from the NFL pipeline is almost as bad as believing the jibber-jabber that spews out of Harbaugh’s piehole.
Arya got herself a little white pony. That was cool.
I don’t think sweeps has anything to do it. It is clear that you are either going to watch the draft no matter when or not.
They will not get a boost in who watches by moving the dates.
They should move it around the country because the center of the NFL world is not NYC.
Damn, she stuck “needle” through the guy’s windpipe.
Talk about delusional, Joffrey boasting how he won the battle.
The Dragons are getting big.
Walter Football has the 49ers picking Alex Carter, CB, Stanford in the first round of the 2015 draft. They have us picking 32nd and the Patriots picking 31st!
Berger
Who’s the first pick? Mariota or Winston?
Looking ahead to 2015 if I had to draft a RB this would be my draft crush. Probably a moot point if Lattimore stays healthy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YueOldW_8tc
Try three years in a row.
Bullit- Mariota went first, Winston second. They cited teams worried about Winston wanting to play baseball. I don’t think I would worry about that.
Astute observation, Winder.
Astute observations? I’ll give ya an astute observation.
“The team will be playing the AFC West and the NFC East this coming year, so we’ll put them down for 8-0 against that bunch.”
The game hasn’t even been scheduled yet but Peyton Manning has already thrown for 350 yds and 4 TDs vs our pathetic secondary. Who comprises our pathetic secondary anyway? Doesn’t matter.
Broncos 28, 49ers 0. Try that astute observation on for size.
So Walter Football thinks Jim Harbaugh and the Niners will beat the future president of the United States and his Patriots in the Super Bowl this year?
Walter Cherepinsky thinks Jim Harbaugh can beat Tom Brady in the SB? Archie Bunker said it best. “You dumb pollock.”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8qBQzcvIAE
Denny
Pollock is whitefish. Stinging insult.
Giving Harbaugh a new contract isn’t that difficult if done right.
Base of $6.5 mil a year for 4 years. Bonus of $1 mil for winning NFC Championship and $2.5 mil for winning a Super Bowl.
Put incentives for success in the deal and he can make $10 mil if he hits them.
Structure something with incentives for Kap with even more incentives for improvement.
Dick Sherman continues to act like an ass.
He might piss off Crabtree enough that he re-signs with the Niners just for the chance to play against Dick 3 times a year.
That would require staying in the NFC West and not seeing the Rams or Cards offering big money so staying with the Niners guarantees that.
Sherman definitely has no class IMO.
http://www.csnbayarea.com/49ers/sherman-autographs-several-photos-sorry-crabtree
He should have called him a dumb halibut, just for the halibut! If it were a show from these days he would be a dumb tilapia!
Seriously, Skeebs?
The Donkeys won’t win the AFC west this year. They may not reach the playoffs.
And Harbaugh won’t get his deal before this season.
There’s no need at this point. Yes, I’m changing my mind.
Bullit I might have an alternative to Ryan Shazier –
Kevin Pierre-Louis, OLB, Boston College
Not as fast in terms of speed but, he’s a tackling machine and undersized for the OLB position too.
Might be a nice option later on?
NJ
Never heard of Kevin Pierre-Louis but looking at his video and his measurable he could be a good find in the 6th rd because of his tweener status. Draft him as a SS and ST guy as a classic sleeper.
Re my Apr 6 11:35am post.
Happy to be able to influence and change some views.
Whatever gets you through the night, skippy.
Grumpelstiltskin’s not my name.
Keep spinning, Skeebs…
This according to the Urban Dictionary:
grumplestiltskin
n. the act of passing out on the toilet while taking a dump.
After drinking a case of Moosehead, Evon took a grumplestiltskin and was awakened the next morning by his startled roommate.
Maybe we should start an Urban Dictionary WOTD.
Crumplestiffskin is dying on the toilet a la Elvis.
Thankyouverymuch.
I watched a show with Mariucci today. It included FSU WR Kelvin Benjamin and Allen Robinson. He is a WR that looks like a TE, 6’5″ and 240lbs. I’m fairly sure that is who Harbaugh would take. I’m not sure who Baalke will take. If we want him we’ll need to take him with our first pick. Allen Robinson is 6’3″ and 220. He probably has less big plays in him than Benjamin but is probably a better, and definitely a steadier, WR. We should be able to get him in the 2nd round.
Berger I’m going to pass on Benjamin simply because he’s not much for games played.
Like his size, and the potential that comes with it but, I think I’d be more comfortable with Robinson or several others.
I’m also going to go outside of the box on what positions we’ll address early on.
I’m leaning toward Hageman at 30, if available, simply because he’s a freak that doesn’t have to start right away.
2 other concerns I have are, the possible departure of Iupati and, whether Kilgore is the future at Center.
I’d love to snag Center Marcus Martin from USC and OT ‘Tiny’ Richardson from TN within those top 6 Picks.
Look for the BPA, regardless of position.
No one needs to contribute on Day 1 anyway, secure some talent for the future IMO.
If we landed a talented OT like Richardson, Anthony could easily move into Iupati’s slot if necessary.
Get those Linemen, both sides of the ball, can’t underestimate their value.
For a big target, I’m also going to include Rutgers WR Brandon Coleman on my wishlist.
I’ve got a feeling Baalke will go for at least 2 WRs from this Class.
Can’t overlook the possibility of losing Crabtree in FA either.
Here’s my wishlist for the WRs as it stands at the moment –
Jordan Matthews – Vandy
Donte Moncrief – MS
Odell Beckham Jr – LSU
Paul Richardson – CO
Marqise Lee – USC
Davante Adams – Fresno St.
Allen Robinson – PSU
Brandon Coleman – Rutgers
These are the guys I’d put into my Slot WR Wish List category –
Slot WRs –
Brandin Cooks – OR St – (Slot)
Tevin Reese – Baylor (Slot)
Chandler Jones – SJSU (Slot)
Bruce Ellington – SCAR – (Slot-KR) (Odell-light)
From Schefter ESPN
Most Gtd $ in RB/K/P deals this year:
K Robbie Gould $8.85M
K Dan Bailey $7.5M
RB D. Sproles $5.5M
P Pat McAfee $5.25M
RB Toby Gerhart $4.5M
Seems like da Bears and the Cowgurls continue to overpay, this time their kickers.
They are not setting the market but just being stupid by overpaying.
Putting this in perspective these kickers are getting paid more than Patrick Willis or Navarro Bowman in 2014. In fact they are getting apid more than any member on the Niner roster.
That is why it is foolish to follow their lead in overpaying because you put yourself in salary cap hell and have to cut your best defensive players like Demarcus Ware to keep your kicker Dan Bailey. That’s why they are losers.
On my previous post it’s how you read what Schefter said.
I did some more digging and these are the guaranteed amounts.
Gould’s cap hit for 2014 is $4.3 mil and Bailey’s is $1.7 mil.
They are still overpaid but not as bad as I initially thought.
NJ- My list of WRs for us include only big physical types. We don’t use WRs who take the top off. With our play calling that is a non existent position. They don’t even get on the field.
I’m not familiar with all of the WRs on your list but from what I have seen I like Jordan Matthews, Kelvin Benjamin, Allen Robinson, Devante Adams and the kid from Wisconsin. They are all big and are excellent at winning the 50/50 balls.
I would rather that we design some plays for some fast, quick game breakers but we just don’t do that. IMO, it would be a wasted pick unless RoBaugh is planning on changing the play calling philosophy.
I was very much for Abbrederis the WR from Wisconsin until I saw his combine bench press was 4 reps.
They had their Pro Day already so if I were him I would’ve redid this to improve that number but I cannot find that info.
This is a red flag (shades of AJ Jenkins) Big Ten receiver that is not strong.
AS Michael Irvin said in Game Changers last night, “If you can’t get off the line, you can’t play in the NFL” (paraphraseing but he said that in essense.)
So until I can see evidence that he’s stronger I would back off a little and not touch him until 5th rd.
3 names I would add to the WR lists are Martavis Bryant, Jarvis Landry and Cody Latimer.
Today is the LSU Pro Day.
Get to see Beckham and Landry run drills as well as Mettenberger throw and Loston at Safety.
Landry has to improve his 40 time to move up but almost all the draft gurus compare him to Boldin.
From PFT
“The NFL will release the 2014 preseason schedule at 3:15 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, the league announced today.”
Maybe the regular season schedule comes next week?
Hey that’s about 35 mins from now.
The thing is, Bergs, this is Harbaugh’s Waterloo. Or Dancing Queen. Or whatever ABBA song you prefer.
He HAS to win it all to be in the driver’s seat come contract talk time. If he doesn’t win it all this season, he stands to get the stink-eye from the front office. He’s at the point where he may be seen as a guy who has reached his ceilling. I doubt he lame-ducks his way through 2015.
Which means he needs to dial up the offense and get a deep game going. He MUST be able to see this to move forward. The status quo isn’t working.
Getting overly excited to the release of the *preseason* schedule is akin to Navin R. Johnson’s exhilaration of the arrival of the new phone book.
Denny
I could list all of Jeter’s babes and live vicariously through him.
Slow news cycle.
Lions sign Golden Donut Tate as a FA now are targetting Evans if they stay at 10 or trade upto take Watkins.
Seems like they want to even be more pass happy than they have been.
Trying to defense Megatron and Watkins would be a challenge.
Even Evans would be a tough matchup with tall targets.
The Lions trading UP to draft another WR with their first selection? Is it any wonder why that franchise has never made the Super Bowl with a philosophy like that.
How many times and ways must I spell it out to you?

I didn’t say I agree with their way but they have used more 1st rd picks to draft wrs and hit on Herman Moore and Megatron. Hitting on 2 out of 10.
Preseason at Balt, home against Broncos and Bolts and finish at Houston.
. . . and there was much rejoicing . . .
Cullivber charged with felony possession of brass knuckles and two misdemeanors.
Arraignment is this Friday.
Possible 3 years on the felony but could get probation if he has a decent attorney.
This will be his last chance because next time he acts dumb there won’t be probation. He also has to worry about NFL justice from Goodell.
Walter Cherepinsky has the Niners drafting Kelvin Benjamin or *gulp*, trading up for Mike Evans. Walter makes Michael Stivic look like a frigging genius.
Culliver needs to be cut post haste. Either that or join the Polish Navy so he and his brass knuckles can sink to the bottom of the sea.
Jarvis Landry WR ran a sluggish 4.77 40 at the combine and dropped in the WR rankings.
Today at LSU Pro Day he redeemed himself by posting a 4.51 time.
Makes him a viable option
http://tinyurl.com/n4bclh4
Berger we use VD as our sole deep option.
Getting a WR that can compliment him shouldn’t be much of a stretch.
The book on beating our Offense is the age old Box Stack approach.
Putting a burner in motion and increasing the speed from the Slot only makes sense from my POV.
This Draft gives Baalke the option to stay put, due to the depth and, grab cheaper future needs while providing Cap relief for the extension of Kaep.
I’m not sold on keeping Iupati and Crabtree either.
As happened to TBrown and Goldson, you get the offer. Once.
I think Iupati is done, Crabtree is borderline, dependent on the market, which is coming down for WRs.
Davante Adams, for me, is the perfect insurance plan for Crabtree.
Slow yes, but, he wins the battles and catches well in traffic.
Jordan Matthews and Donte Moncrief both run well too.
Plenty of ways to move around this Draft Board, especially at the WR position.
Again, getting the big boys for the trenches is always a smart idea in my book.
If Baalke wants to plan ahead, these are the Picks to use and Draft Class to do it in IMO.
Getting a top rated Center, like Martin perhaps, wouldn’t be a bad approach, since it takes a year or 2 to develop him anyway.
NJ- Getting a WR to take the top off the D might makes sense to you and me but RoBaugh won’t put him on the field.
RoBaugh better get with our program soon Berger.
Here’s the Draft Class to do it in.
Calling all Outsider pundits – present a case that OBJ is not AJ 2.0.
One scout tweefered that OBJ is Victor Cruz 2.0.
#30 is a pick full of anticipation – take a Texan corner the size of Mickey Rooney, or a so-called ‘overweight’ wide receiver from Florida State.
Franchise I’d take the BPA approach at 30.
Not crazy about the WR Pick there personally.
I think there’s plenty of other options that could be had into RD2.
Fuller makes sense to me at 30, as does Hageman if available.
Should be interesting.
I’d be surprised to see Baalke move up too.
Who knows at this point?
It’s all about the value he’s placing on any given position.
Beckham is bigger, faster, and has better hands. No small corners in the 1st. We can get Stanley Jean in the late 2nd.
Gotta be concerned with what the Rams add too.
If Sammy Watkins joins Tavon and Steadman, along with Harvin in Seattle, a small quick CB isn’t without merit.
Sammys’ Brother Jaylen Watkins could be in play and, come cheaper than RD1.
Getting a better pass rush helps too.
Going to be a fun weekend at Radio City next month.
Denny
I’m excited for the preseason because it gives us our first glance at Levi’s Stadium which I am very curious. A new stadium should have happened 20 years ago.
If you like decaying decrepit stadiums just BART over to the Oakland Coliseum and maybe you’ll luck out when the sewage backs up out of the toliets again.
This is suprising. Brandon Llloyd???
Nobody wanted him so he sat out 2013.
Not on board with this.
I suppose there’s no harm in bringing him in on a make good minimum deal.
I would still go forward and draft several WRs regardless.
Lloyd is training camp fodder and would need to really impress to beat out a younger player if all things are equal.

Kap being investigated for sexual assault earlier this month in Miami.
This team has surpassed being the Raiders. Laughingmothereffingstock.
Who wants to be the first to defend this one?
The floor is yours, Bullit.
I’ll give Kap the benefit of the doubt that this is just an ugly rumor without merit.
If your credible source is TMZ you must be a big fan of the National Enquirer which explains a lot.
Denny
You are showing your true nature here.
You really don’t like the 49ers, do you because you latch on to everything negative you can find and run with it?
Here is the essence of the story so far from a blog in USA Today using TMZ as their source:
“Allegedly, a woman claims that the NFL baller brought her to his hotel room at the Viceroy in Miami. She allegedly claims that she was drugged or was under the influence of something, and was assaulted by the alleged NFL Player and potentially some other professional athletes. The woman is undergoing a mental evaluation and the police are looking into the validity of the claims.”
Miami PD is questioning this woman’s sanity.
Well PFT just ran with the TMZ story.
And I don’t know what you’re talking about. Elvis did have an alien love child who also doubled as the bat boy of the NYC subways.
Move over Crockett and Tubbs. Colin Kaepernick now starring in…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTPu4hjfHKg
Exactly.
Everyone is quoting one lone source TMZ.
The wording on TMZ is allegedly.
So allegedly there is a possibility that you are Elvis’ bastard
son Denny Snow.
I’ll wait until something more than a rumor emerges.
I tried to warn you guys. First you put on a Miami cap, next comes the orange Miami jumpsuit and brass handcuffs.
“Quinton Patton and Seahawks receiver Ricardo Lockette also are part of the investigation by Miami Police.”
I knew Kap and Patton were working together in the offseason, but this gives a whole new meaning to getting on the same page of your playbook.
“Miami police report on Kaepernick, Patton and Lockette says nothing about sexual assault, despite TMZ report.”
I guess the Blaine Gabbert era will have to wait for further info before breaking out the champagne.
Sounds pretty sketchy to me. But hey, she said there was a bong involved – so immediately drug test all three players. Even if they were in the room, they’ll come up positive this soon after. If not, her story is just BS.
A few hours have passed and no new reports of alleged nefarious activity by a member of the 49ers?
C’mon guys, you’re slacking off.
Pot and booze is pretty tame for Miami standards. We’re talking live alligators and hookers full of coke.
Shit, Colin’s a hero for taking the wasted chick to the hospital.
Hey Dennis, go meet the kettle.
I’m not the face of the franchise looking to make $20M/yr. And look at you trying to justify and rationalize his actions as saying “pot and booze is pretty tame.”
Have some goddamn team pride ferchrissakes.
Tame as they may be, you don’t find the names Brady, Manning or even Alex Smith attached to them. The kid needs to wise up and keep out of certain situations that have a higher likelihood of just such outcomes. It all boils down to a matter of choice.
“He chose… poorly.”
Oh, piss off, Dennis. Remember when Eddie D bought off a rape charge? Or had to sell the team becuase he tried to extort a liquor license from the ex-gov of Louisiana? Or Jerry Rice cheating on his wife while she lay dying in the hospital? Or 10 million other things? Were you pissing yourself then? Were you functioning?
Gimme the good old days when, well, everyone was pretty much the same as they are now.
God, what a whiner.
And he needs to take off those goddamn headphones, and he needs to get off my effing lawn!
There you go again trying to lessen and justify his actions by bringing up the misgivings of others from the past. That makes it all better.
1. Kap mess in Miami this morning.
2. Lefty takes a dump 1st rd at Augusta.
3. Berger calls and asks about the Kentucky Derby favorite, California Chrome unknowingly setting me off on anther tirade on how the horse industry is going down the tubes.
4. To top everything off I just got a letter in the mail from the mortuary asking me to take a survey so they can better carry out “my final wishes.” They’re already kicking dirt on my ass.
Not my day.
Someone saw this on social media and recounted what she read.
Take it for what it’s worth.
” From what I read prior to the incident being reported through the media it seemed to me the woman involved had too much to drink. She put herself in a situation where she was drunk in a room with three men, not too smart. Making a dumb decision however does not make it right for people to call a woman a slut, ho, etc… The woman had made comments on her twitter and facebook account(now deleted) that she had made some dumb mistakes. The woman’s mother was the one who pressed her on instagram and on facebook to go to the police. The woman’s mother also got on kap’s instagram and facebook and kept posting she was going to make sure her daughter did the right thing and turn him in for what he did to her. I also want to say that yes this woman looks to have been a groupie, but she has a business of her own, is a model and has a daughter who is six years old and a model. You really have to feel sorry for both parties involved.”
No Dennis. The point is, you didn’t give a shit about the misdeeds back then when they were winning. It’s just an issue now because . . . . why?
Why the change, skippy?
I think it’s just sad that you want the team to suck so you have a reason to complain, Dennis.
New post is up.
