Freudian Fumbles

Bear with me today, Outsiders, this post may get a little tortured (like our team might this weekend).

Most 49er fans are aware that the team has what you might call some issues. Such as you might say stinking or sucking. These are pretty straightforward problems that are fairly easily recognized, if not easily or even ever worked out.

Green Bay fans also have issues, but theirs are a bit more subtle and elusive. You might say these problems fall into the category of Bridesmaid Hell. Since the evil okie showed up in Wisconsin in the early nineties, the Packers have been a perennial contender in the NFC North, but have always managed to fall short.

The Packers did win the SB in 1996, but soon afterwards their coach Mike Holmgren and their defensive superman Reggie White left the premises. Fourteen years later, the team still does not have another ring, despite contending for one year in and year out. They are a bit like the Eagles in the NFC East. Close, but no cigar.

Three times, the team has coughed away a shot at the SB by turning over the ball, and the game, at the end of the NFC Championship game. Brett Farve heave-hoed two woeful ints to accomplish this splutz and last year Aaron Rogers fumbled away the game one play after he had overthrown an open receiver for what would have been the game winning TD. Oh, no! Not again!

Most 49er fans would probably prefer to trade issues with the Packers fans. But this is not right thinking. The off season hurts a hellava lot more when you’ve blown another golden opportunity than it does if you’ve just had another forgettable season.

The Packers have had HOF caliber QB play for nearly twenty years, with only one SB to show for it. Hahaha. Losers! When the 49ers had twenty years of HOF caliber play, they trotted home with FIVE trophies. It’s entirely possible the Colts franchise is going to produce only ONE SB victory, also, despite fifteen or more years of top five all time QB play.

Why am I bringing this up? Probably because the Niners are going to get butchered this weekend and it kind of ticks me off. Not only will the team be non-competitive, but the Niner’s 2005 #1 QB pick will be sitting on our bench behind a short fifth round off the street QB, while the Packers 2005 first round QB pick will be on the field throwing for 300+ yards and four TDs.

These cheeseheads are a nasty reminder of a failed era in San Francisco. I would dearly like to see our boys grind them into the tundra like they ground up the Cardinals last weekend. Unfortunately, the Packers will actually be awake and trying to win the game. They also are a pretty good team. (But not good enough!).

In fact, to really gall these northern fellows, who are 7-4 versus the 49ers 4-7, this game is a MUST win game for them and a throw away game for us! We can lose and still make the playoffs. If they lose, they are going to be two games behind Chicago and virtually toast even for a wild card.

The moral to the story is simple: even when you do things right, the results can turn out wrong. The 49ers only need three ints and three fumbles to make this game enjoyable. But the Packers need Divine Intervention to have a successful season. IOW, 49er fans won’t be nervous Sunday, but Packer fans will be sweating, waiting for the Oh, No! moment. And there’s a real chance Alex Smith will be watching the playoffs on the 49er bench, while Rogers watches on his living room sofa. Now that would be delicious.

Skeebs, you should have opened by saying, excuse me while I divagate.

  2. BergerNo Gravatar says:

The blocking was solid on this play but what I remembered most was Adrian Wilson bearing down on Westbrook right as he got past the LOS. Westbrook gave him a quick move and ran right past what looked like a sure tackle after about a 2 to 4 yd gain.

Mr. Sing says Dixon and Westie will be “thunder and lightning” combination, not lightning and lightning. Pretty catchy, huh. Bet that’s got the cheeseheads trembling.

I keep asking myself how much of our run success was attributable to improved line play or were the Cardinals just that bad? I’m sure it was some sort of combination of the two. Bigger and truer test come Sunday morning vs the Pack. I’m sure we’ll find out early. Oh, say like our first two plays of the game which almost assuredly will be Westbrook running up the gut following Moran Norris’s keister.

I neglected to use “divagate” in my post. I’m feeling tristful once again.

Question for us is, whether we drop everyone into coverage and, can actually COVER when we do it?

A win on the road against a quality opponent is all I’m looking for. Can we? Please?

Our Division games are ultimately the most important, but the extra W would be huge to tighten the ranks. Gore is done, this forces Sing to rethink and, also makes GB plan to outsmart a normally VERY predictable plan.

3 step drops and ball out. Pick up the tempo and break the mold.

Let me take a shot for you Skeebers –

I was thinking of “Kill the Mike” but that’s probably too harsh. Somebody might take it literally. Then I’d be an irresponsible journalist. As opposed to just another idiot with a blog. Too risky.

Skeebs- What? Are you trying to get a job with a major newspaper? I hope you do! You would probably be the best read wherever you go.

  10. BergerNo Gravatar says:

The 49ers need an exfoliation to get rid of the scurf that is Singletary.

  11. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

No way, Berg. For one, that would be a job instead of a joy. For another, big papers don’t hire guys out of the blue. You have to put in your time, crawl up the ladder, etc.

  12. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Nice WOTD today. It sounds like what it means.

  13. delmardennisNo Gravatar says:

Anyone seen the throwback unis the pack will don tomorrow? It’s enough to make the scurf on your skin crawl.

  14. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Have it on good authority the Packers won’t torture us tomorrow.

They may however, make good use of ‘enhanced humiliation techniques’.

If it resulted in Singletary moving on, it might *almost* be worth it.

While I’ve had some time on my hands – Get a load of this HIGH SCHOOL kid —

  17. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Maiocco says we match up well with GB and the game should be close. NJ49er correctly points out how we play the good teams close (but lose) and lose to the bums, too (see Carolina). Can anyone explain to me how Tampa flew across country and stepped into our house and whipped us 21-0 and yet somehow expects a close game in GB? This team makes no sense.

  18. delmardennisNo Gravatar says:

Eric Davis was so bold as to predict a 49er victory in Green Bay. And he was very emphatic with his conviction I might add. I don’t know what Eric’s been drinking, but rest assured his eyes are quite glassy and hyaline since he had to be imbibing all week to make that statement.

  19. BergerNo Gravatar says:

The 49ers victory over the Cardinals will look hyaline after we get our butts kicked by the Packers.

  20. BergerNo Gravatar says:

NJ- I checked out that clown last week. He needs a trip to a PAC-12 school. Why? Because I said so! Any decision of what school he’ll attend is hyaline until he visits a PAC-12 school.

  21. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Anybody who thinks Troy Smith is better than Alex Smith has no idea of what an NFL QB should look like. Let the hatred flow.

  22. BergerNo Gravatar says:

NoFear- Alex is still our best QB no matter hw much you hate him. Since he gives us the best chance to win I say we should keep him on the bench. Just lose baby. Play Troy or Nate. Please do not play Alex, we need a better drft pick

  23. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Geez, Berg. You must have missed seeing any NoFear posts. You know he never says anything unless someone takes a shot against Nolan or praises the guy Nolan drafted with his very first pick. 馃槅

  24. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Skeebs- I’d rather have Nolan. At least he understands that QB is the most important player on the team. But please don’t mistake that for thinking I want Nolan back. He throws every other player under the bus and never blames the coaching after a bad performance. And to think, I liked the hiring of both of those coaches. I coud not have been more wrong. I picked a bad day to not drink.

  25. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Considering I was a big fan of the Nolan and Singletary hirings I don’t know if my opinion is worth much. But I must think like a cornerback and go forward! I have three names to consider for now. Jim Harbaugh, Charlie Weiss and Mike Mularky. Let the fat lady Sing.

  26. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

No Pass Rush when it matters- Dixon playing on Teflon – Spencer/Goldson/Clements can’t cover deep and, Reggie Smith can’t tackle.

Ahmad Brooks can’t see a SNAP before rushing the QB

Add Red Zone Cryptonite & we’re looking at Seattle next week as the Drop Dead Date of our Season.

Hey, we played a great 1st half, but trading 3s for 6s doesn’t cut it.
