Combine Week

The NFL Combine kicks off this week, which means GM John Lynch will have to come out of hiding and discuss/spin the Reuben Foster debacle.

Up to now, he’s been all smiles and good cheer. So this will be his first foray into damage control.

Trent Baalke collected an Executive of the Year award after his first draft, in 2011. But the only guy from that draft and the 2012 draft still with the Niners, or even still in the league, is Daniel Kilgore.

So it’s easy for what looks like a good draft to go south in a hurry. With Foster looking like a guy who’s too dumb to play in this league, it puts a lot of pressure on Solomon Thomas to perform at a much higher level than he showed his first year. Otherwise, the top two choices in last year’s draft are mostly a waste.

The best thing about the Combine is that when it’s over, the new league year and the start of FA are only a week away. Not to mention that the emptiness of February is gone for another year.

I got the flu this February, further marking it as a cursed set of days. Don’t know if any of you have gotten this year’s megawatt version, but it laid me low for two weeks. Just now crawling back to life.

Flu got me last month too Skeebs.
1st time I’ve missed work in over 20yrs.
Laid me out for a week.
    Glad you’re back in lineup.

I’ve already set the DVR for Indy.
Will be doing my homework accordingly 😀

  2. WinderNo Gravatar says:

All I know is last years Niners were way more entertaining and fun to watch than they were for the prior three. Even when we were losing a lot of games you could see the change in the teams mindset. As for Foster I don’t know the specifics of the case or even if there is a case. Lynch is probably trying to protect the investment until everything comes out. I am pretty sure lynch will do the right thing.

  3. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

This year’s flu is bad shit. So far my family and I have been lucky enough to avoid it. Keeping my fingers crossed.

  4. WinderNo Gravatar says:

Skeebs, NJ- did either of you guys get a flu shot? Just curious>

  5. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

    No. Never do get them.

  6. WinderNo Gravatar says:

They say if you do even if you come down with it it is as severe.

  7. WinderNo Gravatar says:

    Isn’t as severe.

  8. bullitNo Gravatar says:

100 years ago an estimated 50- 100 million people died as a result of the Flu Pandemic of 1918. That’s 5 percent of the earth’s population.
That is probably more people dying than the black plagues of the middle ages.

The older you get the more you need to start getting flu shots as you become more vulnerable. I started getting the flu shots when I turned 50. So far this year I have not caught the flu despite many people at work who were very sick.

  9. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Looking forward to the combine\.
Guys on offense I am interested in are the TE Mike Gisecki from Penn St
a probable 3rd rounder and the two RBs from Georgia Sony Michel a probable 2nd round pick and Nick Chubb a 3rd or 4th rounder.
Chubb reminds me of an ex Niner and Ex Georgia back , Garrison Hearst.
He started in front of Gurley before he had his knee injury.
He has come almost all the way back after that injury and might be a good value pick .

Also looking for them to take a QB on day 3

  10. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Winder I’ve been a non-conformist when it comes to the flu shot.
Always believed that it was nothing more than the ‘Corporate Influence’ pedaling of ‘everything can be fixed with meds’ approach.
If everyone else bought into the shot, my chances were addition by subtraction.

Knock wood, I’ve always avoided illness beyond the usual head cold variety.
OTC stuff until a Rx is necessary.
My own Dr busts my A$$ because I never see him beyond the yearly physical visits.
My primary care guy is what I call, a ‘D’ student of medicine.
Got the sheepskin on the wall but, likely had lot’s of help to obtain it or, Daddy donated a lot of money to his Alma Mater 😀

Dr’s are a necessary evil in my view. See’m when it’s the last resort.

  11. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bullit I’ve got Rashaad Penny and Royce Freeman atop my RB list, with Sony Michel close behind.
Kid I want to see, my dark horse candidate, is Roc Thomas from JAX St.

Curious to see if Kalen Ballage from AZ St could be used as a FB also.
Big kid from the Pre-Combine numbers I’ve seen. His measurables will be up to date this week and, will iron out any guess work.

I’m more focused on a tall WR this year. I don’t think we’ll need to spend a high Pick on one either.
This year’s DE options are very slim as well. Will be interesting to see what Lynch/Shanny have as their primary target.
I’ll cross my fingers for OG QNelson at 9/10 but, highly doubt he’ll get to us there.
Great crop of DTs this year however. If Vita Vea is on our radar, we could drop back a few slots and still get him.

I’m not sold on CB DWard that high either, (a smidge short IMO) at 5’10”. I prefer a taller CB, at least 6′ but, if he’s good enough, 2″ probably won’t kill the deal.

Anxious to see them compete in Indy and, to get all the ‘numbers’ current.

  12. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bullit get a look at Wagner OT Greg Senat this week in Indy.
He’s working with the OL Group but, I’ve read that he’s a converted Basketball player. Very raw as an OT.

I’m curious to see if he’d be considered as a TE?
6’8″/290 and, obviously has the skills needed to block.

He’s in OL Group 2 and should be wearing #38. Same Group as one of my OC options, Frank Ragnow, #35.
If he can run, (even a little bit), he’s on my radar as a possible Late RD conversion option.

  13. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Colts hire Rathman as their RBs coach

  14. WinderNo Gravatar says:

bullit- Nice videos. Hopefully when we get our Oline solidified Jimmy has a little more time to work on his foot mechanics.

  15. WinderNo Gravatar says:

NJ- Yeah, I don’t like Dr, visits either. But at my age I have learned that things usually don’t get better on their own(kidney stones, bone spurs, etc.). But I don’t go either unless something is really bothering me.

  16. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

So that’s it, GM Lynch says he is NOT giving special treatment to Reuben Foster. Shocking!

The Niners always give fully guaranteed 8-10 million dollar rookie contracts to less-than-upstanding thugs who must start their pro careers on the substance abuse program and get kicked out of the combine for thuggery.

So, what’s a couple of additional incidents of law breaking after that?

Lynch is in CYA mode trying to save his own ass, and not going to do the right thing as that ship sailed long since.

Just so’s everyone is comfortable that this is not an example of special treatment, Lynch says he has explained to Foster what is expected of him. You know, don’t get arrested for dumb shit.

BTW, if it wasn’t already made clear to the moron, Lynch and others should DQ themselves from any job which might require any sort of leadership.

Personally, I’m truly surprised the bay area hasn’t risen up in a single voice of condemnation over just the fancy short-barreled Sig AR-15 he owns. But I guess those rabid gun grabbers automatically excuse football playing thugs from such all-important agendas.

  17. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

If flu shots worked would there be an epidemic every year or two with all the folks, voluntary and mandatory, getting it?

Glad you guys survived the flu but you’re getting too old to live the carefree and reckless lives of your youths.

  18. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

The technical name we get this year for the flu is A/H3N2.
Where’s the good old Avian and Swine varieties I ask?
    No more poultry and pigs?

This one has been associated with numerous deaths, involving a broad age range.
Whoever concocted this strain should be proud. In years past, it was always ‘the elderly’ who were most at risk, which is understandable.
This variety has claimed many children as its victims.
I’ve managed to stay ahead of the flu curve for over 40yrs without taking the shot.
I’ll likely continue to follow my credo.
The more of you who take it, the better my odds of avoiding it all together 😀

  19. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Colts announce they wil let Frank Gore go after the Football New Year in March.
Wonder if this is it for Frank?

Like to see him retire as a Niner ceremonally at least and take him on as a future RB coach.

  20. WinderNo Gravatar says:

I would like to see that too.

  21. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Me 3 – Love me some Frank – The Inconvenient Truth 😀

  22. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

We should bring Gore back for one season, then have him retire as a 49er. He is more reliable and proven than any back we have on the roster.

  23. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Foster has yet to have any court hearings so I’m willing to wait to see what he is charged with and the facts of the case.

Cutting Foster would just be a PR move and would benefit teams like the Cowgurls and Raiduhs who have no problem with signing problem children who other teams cast off.

We all see Foster’s obvious talent so let’s wait until the details of the alleged crime is made public before we pass judgement.

I think Lynch is handling these incidents correctly and if Foster needs help the Niner should help him grow up.

Foster has 2 upcoming court dates so let’s see what comes of it. For sure he has to stop acting like a dummy.

  24. WinderNo Gravatar says:

I agree about Foster, he is acting like a kid and maybe he can turn it around. I have always believed you can’t change who you are but you can change what you do. I think Lynch is acting appropriately with this situation. So far.

  25. robNo Gravatar says:

Have to agree with bullitt on Foster ! Trumaine Brock got cut right away but the charges were dropped if i’m not mistaken ! At least wait for the investigation before pulling the plug on the kid!

  26. WinderNo Gravatar says:

I think they were gonna dump Brock either way.

  27. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Coin toss to 9ers
    Picking 9 in odd RDs

  30. robNo Gravatar says:

It’s official we have the 9th pick !

  31. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Dolphins are sending a mid-round pick to the Rams in exchange for DE Robert Quinn.

  32. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“The final four teams expected to be vying for free-agent quarterback Kirk Cousins are the Broncos, Cardinals, Jets and Vikings.”

  33. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Aldon Smith on the run following another ‘alleged’ DV incident.
Write this dude off as another casualty of stupidity I guess?
    Way to waste your life….

  34. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“Aldon Smith checks into rehab facility.”

That’s one place to hide, I guess.

  35. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Aldon Smith: Multi-million dollar talent. Five cent head.

  36. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

Hell, yes. Nobody thinks due process is a reasonable argument for Aldon Smith.

It rarely works in court, either for the unwashed masses, anyway.

While we celebrate the mentality of “collision low crossers”, come on people, keep it in the arena, er stadium, there’s only so far our hypocrisy can be stretched.

We love Liam Neeson in the Taken movies, and Keanu Reeves in the John Wicks, but the only take away is that guns, inanimate objects, are responsible for killing people, just like big rocks I guess.

I think teams should start recruiting from the good citizenship awardees, or at least put a modicum of value on discipline.

It makes more sense than recruiting players with the nastiest attitudes and then reacting with disgust when they show it.

  37. RobNo Gravatar says:

Now it all makes sense !

  38. robNo Gravatar says:

The San Francisco 49ers are expected to target Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Allen Robinson when he becomes a free agent on March 14, according to multiple sources including our own Al Sacco.
Vincent Frank of Sportsnaut is also hearing that the 49ers plan to make a strong push for Robinson. The Jaguars declined to use the franchise tag on Robinson,

Sammy Watkins is also hitting free agency !

  39. robNo Gravatar says:

    More good news

Last week, Tony Pauline of Draft Analyst reported that the San Francisco 49ers would likely be the Oakland Raiders’ primary competition for Los Angeles Rams cornerback Trumaine Johnson once free agency begins on March 14.

On Monday, Pauline reported the 49ers to be the front-runners for Johnson.

“As previously posted last week, Trumaine Johnson is likely to end up with the San Francisco 49ers,” writes Pauline, who has been reporting from the NFL Scouting Combine for the past week. “The Oakland Raiders want Johnson but do not have the cap space the Niners do. I’m also told the Dallas Cowboys want to sign Johnson but, like the Raiders, their cap space is limited compared to San Francisco.”

The 49ers are slated to be among the top five NFL teams in terms of salary cap space, according to Neither the Raiders nor the Cowboys are in the top 20 with Dallas being among the teams with the least amount of available money.

  40. robNo Gravatar says:

There we go trying to fill needs in free agency so we can have flexibility come draft time ! It’s nice to have people running the show who know what they’re doing !

  41. WinderNo Gravatar says:

Robinson is coming off a knee injury but he is only 24/25 years old. The kid catches everything. To me this is to good to be true. But if it happens it will make our offense way better than it was.

  42. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Robinson is another in the infamous ‘ACL Injury’ category.
Granted, I’ve always seen Gore as the poster child for ‘it’s possible to play’ following such a repair (or several in Frank’s case).
It always comes down to the medical reports and, above all, the character to overcome the set back.

  43. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Looks like Dickhead Sherman is either getting traded or cut by Seahawks.

  44. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Seems like the Seahags are remaking their team and will look quite different after all is said and done.

Also the Rams are getting rid of important parts of their defense trading away Quinn and Ogletree for mid round picks.

  45. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Fun to speculate and play GM

Name 3 Free agents you would sign and 3 guys you would draft

My wish list would be Allen Robinson WR, Josh Sitton G, Malcom Butler CB

Draft Edmunds Edge LB first rd, Gisecki TE Rd 2 (wishful thinking) and Frank Ragnow C rd 3 Bonus pick in Rd 3 WR Equanimeous St Brown

  46. NJ49ERNo Gravatar says:

Right up my alley with Draft wishes Bullit.
Edmunds would be a solid alternative to missing QNelson.
I could see DWard there too as he impressed me in Indy workouts.

Don’t think Gesicki will go to late RD2.
EqStB would be great if he gets there IMO.

  47. WinderNo Gravatar says:

Dion lewis, Allen Robinson, Trumaine Johnson, Arden Key, Conner Williams. Harold Landry. Not gonna happen unless we do some creative moving around.

  48. WinderNo Gravatar says:

Those draft picks depend on us getting the FA’s. Otherwise my draft picks would be totally different

  49. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“Marquise Goodwin and the 49ers have agreed to a 3-year contract extension worth $20.3 million.”

  50. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

    Rams keep wheeling and dealing:

“Rams are expected to trade a 2018 fifth-round pick to Broncos for CB Aqib Talib, per source.”

  51. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Talib at 32 is the same age as Revis.
Both are on the downside of their careers but still want to be paid based on their reputations.

Extension for Goodwin a good move to lock him up for another few years as upcoming season was end of his contract.

  52. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Talib has two years left on his contract. $11 mil for the upcoming season and 9 mil for 2019.

  53. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Can he be another Aaron Curry? Can he absorb coaching.

Harold Landry a safer pick at #9 if cannot trade back. Let the football people make the call.

  54. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

    More on moron.

Too risky. Safe bet is FA: LG Josh Sitton and CB1. Draft: 1st Landry. 2nd best ZBS OCOTF Price/Daniels/Ragnow/Clapp. 3rd CB3. 3rd big WR.

Too bad Armstead, Carradine, and Ward injured last year. Can we move up any of the 2nd and two 3rd’s to get better players with any of the three.

Quality over quantity. After Jimmy GQ cannot chase too much in FA. Good big WR draft class, prefer draft over big $$$ FA.

  55. NJ49ERNo Gravatar says:

    Shanny wants OG for ZBS.
Gotta think of guys like Will Hernandez and Isiah Wynn myself.
Either should come lower than RD1 I hope?
Even to drop back from 9, if they don’t have their guy there, makes sense for an extra Pick.
    All comes with the process.
    Who’s there.
Who’s willing to buy your slot.

  56. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The wiled card at OG is Garnett

Need to evaluate if he can be a viable starter in this offense.
If not you package him with a 4th round pick to move get a 2nd round pick and cut your losses.

I still think Armstead has not shown me anything but being injury prone so I would take a 3rd round pick for him as his contract has it’s option next yaer and he has not played to the level where you exercise that option essentially making this his last yaer.

  57. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Hernandez is a iupati, not for move blocks in an outside zone ZBS. Nelson is a iupati that can pass block.

After Jimmy GQ depletion of our draft capital and salary cap, we do not have luxury of wild spending in FA or draft pick spent on OG (develops behind Sitton).

Wild card is Garnett. Is FA Fusco given a deal to be RG starter/back up and is he really move block capable for outside zone? In Garnett’s recovery have trainers been able to assess whether he can now handle move blocks?

Billy Price can be an OG before he takes over for Kilgore. Daniels can also do both but is he undersized? Can either be OCOTF and Alex Mack like. Wynn too small with small calfs.

In FA both Norwell and Sitton, at 320 lbs, can do outside zone. Bears do a lot of it and CAR maybe a third of their runs. Norwell rumored to go to NYG. So if cannot get Norwell here that leaves Sitton. Either of those two are LG. Fusco/Garnett are RG for now. If both lacking than find RG in 2019 draft.

  58. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“Seahawks have informed perennial Pro-Bowl CB Richard Sherman that they are releasing him today.”

  59. NJ49ERNo Gravatar says:

Bakkentom I could Wynn starting at OG and possibly sliding to OC.
Price injured himself in Indy, might look for him cheap and PUP him?
I’d also go with Ragnow if shopping young OC.

Hernandez can move very well from what I saw in Mobile.

  60. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

Seattle purging their phony, opportunistic anti-American social justice warriors. If only SF had the stones its sorry leadership bragged about they might start the year without daring Americans to ignore them.

  61. WinderNo Gravatar says:

I like the way the FO uploaded Jimmy’s contract to take the big hit this year when we still have quite a bit left to work with. Next year the hit won’t be quite as bad. To get a QB with the talent he has I think the FO did a heck of a job. We have room to get some good FA’s and still have capital for a rainy day. I think we can get Robinson for around what we are paying Garcon

  62. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Never seen so many trades being made before FA even starts. Weird.

  63. WinderNo Gravatar says:

I remember seeing this many either. Creative cap 101?

  64. WinderNo Gravatar says:

  65. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

A lot of work goes in to evaluating NFL-to-be talent. How many of these will be in 1st RD and where. Bradley Chubb will be gone by #9. What will draft boards look like for edge.

Ideally draft down to get a 2nd, then be able to bundle with late Rd picks to get back into late 1st. Get one or more of the next 3 picks and bundle with Armstead/Carradine/Ward/Garnett? to pick up 1st RD players that drop into the 2nd, e.g. our #27 2nd + Armstead to Denver for #8 2nd.

If lucky a mid Rd edge and a late Rd IOL like Price in the 1st.

How much trade value on draft day do the IR’d Armstead, Carradine, Ward, and maybe Garnett have. We may have to keep them into September to build up their trade value.

Browns expended little draft capital along with a raw DeShone Kizer for 3 pickups today.

  66. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Caveat emptor /ˌkævɛɑːt ˈɛmptɔːr/ is Latin for “Let the buyer beware”[1] (from caveat, “may he beware”, a subjunctive form of cavēre, “to beware” + ēmptor, “buyer”). Generally, caveat emptor is the contract law principle that controls the sale of real property after the date of closing, but may also apply to sales of other goods. The phrase caveat emptor and its use as a disclaimer of warranties arise from the fact that buyers typically have less information about the good or service they are purchasing, while the seller has more information. The quality of this situation is known as ‘information asymmetry’. Defects in the good or service may be hidden from the buyer, and only known to the seller.

IOW, do your homework. Otherwise this could happen.

  67. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

I don’t think moncrief is the best answer to the rams new secondary, we will definitely make a run at ARob or Sammy but i kinda like Jordan Mathews hes 25yrs old 6’3 215 and is much faster than Arob and had great production as a rookie in 2016 but fell of with the bills but shannhan has shown what he can do with wideouts. I also would keep an eye out for Courtland Sutton in the draft if we dont get a big time receiver, because shannhan and lynch loved his combine and his size plus production, Ateman ran a pretty slow time so im not sure if were still on him.

A comment in a ninersnation article from today.

  68. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Browns get Landry for surprisingly cheap draft capital

“Landry was scheduled to become a free agent until the Dolphins used the franchise tag on him. Miami received a fourth-round pick in 2018 — No. 123 overall — and a seventh-round pick in 2019 as compensation.”

    From Pro Football Talk

  69. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Browns have a great story to tell now. New GM, the failed Hue Jackson to be kicked out the door next year (Todd Haley will jump to a HC somewhere else, like the Dirk Koetter-Lovie Smith Tampa Bay deal), 5 of fist 64 picks now, 81 mil in cap for MOAR quality FA’s.

Meteoric rise out of the ashes.

  70. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Niners picked up Dakoda Watson’s option and informed Dumervil he wasn’t in the Niner’s future plans today.

  71. bullitNo Gravatar says:

It would take a lot for me to stomach having Dickwad Sherman on this team. He’s coming off a serious Achilles injury and is on the downside of his career turning 30 this month. He was making $11 mil a year

He has to be in the Top five villians on every Niner’s fan list.

If they get him for say $5mil a season I could hold my nose but I think there are better and younger options.

Seahags are cleaning house because all these guys are old and they are deteriorating

  72. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Yeah not feeling very positive about this one either.

  73. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Dickhead, dickwad, dickbutt, dickface – that’s a lot of cherished middle fingers to let go of.

  74. NJ49ERNo Gravatar says:

I could get over Sherman as a hated rival.
I can’t excuse an achilles risk at his position.
All comes down to Saleh system fit I guess.

  75. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

*Before* he was hurt last year, Pro Football Focus graded him as the 33rd best CB in the NFL.

39 Million for three years for a 30 year old average corner? With baggage and character issue potential? I really don’t see it.

I *hope* this is not a big mistake in hindsight.

  76. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Actually on digging, the big factor with his grade slipping was not so much his coverage, but getting flagged a lot last year. Sherman got away with murder for years and last year, not so much.

So it might actually come down more to how the Zebras call it this year, rather than our system.

AND, of course, whether the Achilles is healthy. And if he can keep his fat mouth shut. And, and, and.

  77. bullitNo Gravatar says:

So Dick actually got a raise for being hurt from $11 mil to $13 mil?

Hope he shuts up and is still a shutdown corner. This is all because the DC Saleh wanted him.

If Dick doesn’t perform up to his contract the Niner fans will not be forgiving.

  78. WinderNo Gravatar says:

From what I have been reading it is a loaded incentive based contract that he will have to produce to make the big bucks

  79. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    You are correct Winder

    These are the contract terms

“Richard Sherman’s deal includes a $5M signing bonus, plus $2M base salary, $2M in 46-man roster bonuses, $1M playtime incentive and $3M Pro Bowl incentive in 2018. So #49ers get protection, and Sherman gets upside to beat his #Seahawks deal if he plays well. Win-win”
