Chips Ahoy

We’re half way through the offseason, GM Trent Baalke has left the stage, and from here on out it’s the Chip Kelly show.

That’s fine. We can get our teeth into Kelly. His results will be immediately evident from the first game of the season. GMs are another matter. You can like this year’s draft or dislike it, but the evidence won’t be discernible for three years or so. By the time you discover your GM stinks, it’s way down the road on franchise dysfunction and a long way back from it. As we are seeing so clearly now after Baalke’s five years of mostly failed drafts. The team has gone from the top to the bottom during that time.

Thus far, Kelly is happy about everything. He’s happy about the organization, happy about his relationship with Baalke, happy about the players he inherited, the players that were drafted, and he’s happy about Colin Kaepernick. One thing is clear: either he’s a professional liar or a complete idiot. We’ll have to wait for the first regular season loss to get a look at his unhappy face. It shouldn’t take long.

Up next, we have six weeks or so of mini-camps and OTAs. During this time, we’ll get glowing reports of how fantastic the players are looking — right up until they get cut.

For now, the club has eight CBs and five safeties. That seems a bit more than adequate. Hopefully, the ones that get cut don’t sign with another team and prove to be the ones we should have kept. Unless it doesn’t really matter because none of them should have been signed in the first place.

And we still have Kaepernick, who doesn’t want to be here and wasn’t wanted, either. But Broncos GM John Elway made mince meat out of Baalke and in the end Baalke got nothing but a lot of snickering behind his back, and in some quarters, right to his face.

One thing seems clear from the draft: Chip Kelly will be expected to improve the 49er offense this year almost exclusively with the same cast that failed so miserably last season. Good luck, Chip.

Will Kap be our RG III and kept injury free holding a clipboard. Should have unloaded him to Denver or Cleveland and ate whatever subsidy they required.

Instead TB acted like we had the prettiest girl at the dance. Now we are stuck and most likely no trade coming.

  2. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

One thing we learned from the draft is our guards stink. OG before OT, 1st vs 5th RD. Is it due to coaching or talent, physical and mental.

  3. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:!id=2555251

Interesting to find out how he is used

Where to play OLB, nickel DE, nickel DT

  5. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

    Street clothes, behind the bench.

  6. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

I hated our 3rd and 4th RD picks.

Connor Cook versus Redmond. A position of need with a sharp, pro-ready, huge drop of a 2nd round talent at worst. We have a glut of DB’s.

Rashard Robinson super skinny. A Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie clone? Excuse me while I finish laughing.

I am rooting for all of the picks to over-achieve but get real. The rose-colored glasses are not what I wear.

  7. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Now we enter the doldrums. The ocean winds die off. Coaches and coordinators, the ball in your hands now.

What interest will AD and Kap garner. Is Kap worth a preseason injury? How good is Trenton Brown, can we move on.

  8. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“The 49ers waive G Jordan Devey to help create roster space for the class of incoming rookies.”

So long, Jordan, we hardly booed you.

  9. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

Say what you will Mr Balkey has serious wood for DBs/CBs. How else do you explain Drafting scrawny Rashard Robinson with our fourth round pick? A guy who would have been there in the 7th round? A guy who has played as much football as I have for the past year and a half.

I explain it by asserting the ‘wood factor’. It’s Balkey. We’re gonna get one ACL guy and at least one head scratcher per draft. Some times 2 of each. Back when we had a stacked roster we could waste picks on projects. Not now. Now we are striving mightily to avoid a 5-11 redux. We need every player to be good to go, to compete, hopefully contribute. But it’s hard to argue with ‘wood’.

  10. RTFireflyNo Gravatar says:

10 DBs drafted since 2013… If quantity was quality our secondary would be ‘second’ to none.

Yup. SI concurs with their regrading of the 2013 draft which originally earned an giddy A grade. 3 years of reality has caused a regrading of the 2013 draft to a solid F. 6th and 7th round draftees Nick Moody, BJ Daniels, Carter Bykowski and Marcus Cooper are still in the League sort of but the early rounds have come up short. Corey Lemonier, Vance McDonald, Quinton Patton, even Tank Carradine have underachieved. Winners are Eric Reid, Quinton Dial as regular contributors.

The “F” grade seems a little harsh as Lattimore was always a long shot but if Carradine has a good year maybe we earn a solid D+. No wonder Jimi flipped his wig and the bird too.

  12. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

Yep RT, yikes that’s some serious focusing on our backfield. I guess if you only keep guys for 2-3 years you must keep getting new recruits for the ‘wood pile’. What’s that all about?

  13. RTFireflyNo Gravatar says:

If the last two top picks Armstead and Buckner work out then the D, including the secondary, is going to look much, much better. A new DC might make a world of difference as well.

If not, we’re screwed. Again. Doubly first round screwed.

  14. winderNo Gravatar says:

Baalky does the same stuff every year with pretty much the same results. He looks great on paper for awhile and then he doesn’t. Anyway, I figure 49er fans will just have to take one of them ‘woodies’ up the shorts again this year. But hey, we’re gonna give em hell next year.

  15. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

You got it Winder. I’m trying hard to look on the bright side without being ‘hopeful’, shudder. But it’s hard because of the fond memories of recent success and the past Niner glories. Tempting to want that again but we have reality here whatever that is. Pretty sure it won’t be 49-22-1 in the next 4 seasons…

Only cure is going to be more wins than 4-5-6 per season.

  16. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Four guys cut today were RB Kendall Gaskins, quarterback Dylan Thompson, offensive lineman Jordan Devey and kicker Corey Acosta .

  17. bullitNo Gravatar says:

I wonder how the crowd thst said Harbaugh had to go and Jedv did the right thing in keeping Baalke are strangely silent on this topic.
Jed made the wrong choice. Baalke is a suit and turns out a mediocre one.His failures are catching up with him. Elite coaches are hard to come by.

The premise that Tomsula and his coaching staff would do just as well if Harbaugh stayed is ridiculous. Where is Jimmy T now?
Can’t get a head coaching gig so he’s enjoying the fruits of being a rat and the millions he got when he was fired.

That crowd took the Baalke FO propaganda and said the Niners wouldn’t lose a stepm, reloading and not rebuilding. They argued canning Harbaugh would not set the team back.
Now they are walking what they said back and turning on Baalke and lamenting this has set the team back five years.

Harbaugh’s predecessors couldn’t do anything with the talent on the team. Now the Niners are right back to the day before they hired Harbaugh wondering when they’ll see the playoffs again.
Jed says his team raises Super Banners. I bet you he regrets making that statement because it makes him look like a foolish ass.
It’s about choices and clearly Jed has made some regrettable decisions.

  18. bullitNo Gravatar says:

You seriously have to wonder about Jed’s ability when he chooses Jim Tomsula as his head coach.
Tomsula was a nice guy and a great Dline coach but clearly way over his head as a head coach. He might be out of his comfort zone as a defensive coordinator.

  19. robNo Gravatar says:

Good to see we have enough O-line to release Devey.I was surprised we kept him this long.
CSN Bay area reports say the new offense is leaving players speechless

  20. robNo Gravatar says:

    Here’s a bombshell

    Player quote
” in the past we had a lot of delay of game penalties because either we’re not getting the play in time from upstairs or its just taking too long to read out the play. When you got less verbiage it’s much quicker and easier “

  21. bullitNo Gravatar says:

What’s more important? 44 wins and playoffs (average 11 wins a season) or 8 or 9 delay of game penalties?

It’s a matter of what you think is important and how nitpicky you are.

  22. bullitNo Gravatar says:

IIRC Kap never ran a hurry up offense as the Niner QB. Even inside of 2 minutes he had to huddle up. Also when time was running out he would go on long snap counts that took 3 or 4 extra seconds.
When time is running out you get up to the line of scrimmage and snap it.

  23. robNo Gravatar says:

Antonio Cromartie is a free agent. Any thoughts ?

Also I hear some talk Jason Peters might get released. That would work !!

  24. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The QB has everything to do with the delay of game penalties.
The speaker in his helmet cuts off at the 15 second mark. He needs to keep his eye on the play clock. If he comes to the line of scrimmage with 5 seconds left he needs to get the ball snapped or call a time out. The head scratcher is hesitating and
    going on a long count.

The QB manages the game on the field. Kap has shown a lot of tunnel vision in his play that some have ignored. In his first year as a starter against the Rams there was that ill fated errant pitch he made to the RB near the goal line. Most blamed Roman for the play call but remember it was a read OPTION and some choose to ignore that Kap should’ve read the defense and kept the ball rather than risk the pitch.
Just like the play against the Rams last year where Torrey Smith and Boldin were left uncovered outside the numbers.
Again Kap has tunnel vision and doesn’t even survey the defense.
How can you defend this rookie mistake for a QB who started for 4 years and has been in the NFL for 5? The Rams saw this on film so they were aware that they were playing robo QB with tunnel vision.

  25. winderNo Gravatar says:

Trent’s mom with a pen name?

  26. RTFireflyNo Gravatar says:

Trent’s daughter. She’s the one who ripped Roman. (I agreed with her at the time, but that’s why I don’t believe that “Baalke had nothing to do with Harbs firing” nonsense that keeps popping up in places like 49webzone. She got that opinion somewhere.)

  27. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

Uh sure, Balkey knows what he’s doing, actually it’s us fans that are responsible for the sabotage of the coach, the QB, the poor drafts, the exodus of discarded players, the All ACL Team waste of time and resources. The guy’s so much smarter than commonsense ever could be. Glad the Football Guru straightened us out on that.

  28. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Bears released veteran G Matt Slauson and Niners had a chance
but not even sure if Baalke even considered signing him.
    Slauson signed with the Bolts.
A little younger than Pears and around the same salary. Why is Baalke sitting on his hands and not looking at the waiver wire?

  29. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Another free agent that’s still out there is pass rushing OLB O’Brien Schofield. Has Baalke even taken a look at him?
Baalke is just sitting on his hands hoping he’s got 3 years to develop draft picks.

  30. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

Three more years of Balkey, yikes. Maybe if we really stink despite the new coaches, new O and D systems, new players he will be gone in two years? Or maybe Chip has enough success, say 9-7 in a couple years, that he/Balkey gets extended. Joy.

Look I don’t care how we do it or who gets the credit but winning soon, if not now will be applauded. If we improve from awful to 10-6, maybe a playoff spot,in three years I can stomach Balkey haunting the FO. History says we won’t make the playoffs or go 10-6 in next three years but I’d love to be wrong.

  31. robNo Gravatar says:

I think we’ll sign some free agents after teams make their final cuts to 53.

and yes it’s all your fault PHIL

  32. robNo Gravatar says:

Cheer up guys I mean look on the bright side. Chip Kelley could have been given GM duties !

    I’d need a gun !

  33. winderNo Gravatar says:

I still don’t understand why Baalky didn’t get fired last year.

  34. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

My fame is spreading Rob, lol. Not sure I can take credit (?) for the Niner belly flop tho. I’m with Winder in asking how the Balkey one does not own the 5-11 season. I guess Tomsula took the exclusive fall on that one which makes Balkey the next in line. One more stinker and we may see Teflon Trent’s head roll? Frankly I would prefer to see them WIN NOW with the current crew to avoid another rebuild. Now that could be totally delusional.

  35. Phil fanNo Gravatar says:

How dumb is this? CSN is running an article “Where are the 2012 Super Bowl Niners now?” I refuse to link or even read this time waster but I do want to mock it here. Lord are we in the dead season or what? Dude they are NOT HERE, Gonzo, and we are stuck with a pack of youngsters and Bowman. Oh and our 2nd coaching staff since the brief moment of almost glory. Where are the almost glorious Niners? Pointless, like asking “Where is Phil’s first wife”? NOT here, gonzo, but fortunately I’m better at drafting replacements than Balkey so Phil’s life sputters along okay. More than we can say for a certain sports team.

  36. RTFireflyNo Gravatar says:

Last year I predicted that Tomsula would get the axe at the end of the season, then Baalke at the end of 2016. Now I don’t think so. I think it would take a real stinker of a season for him to go, and I don’t think the Niners will be quite that bad. Teflon Trent will carry on. Just wait for the upcoming power struggle between Chip and Trent, with Paraag and Jed and even Gamble sticking their pudgy fingers in! Now THAT will be good theater.

Niners Nation has the list of uniform numbers for rookies and free agents and notable ex-Niners who wore that number

  38. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Just a regurgitation of the frustrations voiced on this blog.

New coaching staff breathes new life from scratch in a team bottomed out in a rebuild. The offseason strategy and execution so far extremely underwhelming.

This is a throw away year and FO put an exclamation point on it with a dismal FA activity. The only team shoving a middle finger to the fans, tacitly pleading for patience, is the Cleveland Browns.

Who are we competing with from this top ten for next year’s top ten draft order. TENN first 5 picks should all be starters with a healthy franchise QB. CLE tanked this year, whether on purpose or stupidity. Dallas needs a healthy Romo. JAX is now a playoff contender.

BALT, SD, CLE, NYG, and us have a sheet sandwich for their fans this fall. Enjoy. IMO all 5 are set up and playing for top ten draft positioning next year. Foundation is laid with Buckner, Armstead, Garnett, and Bowman.

  39. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Nix NYG, they spent big in FA.

  40. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

SD got Mebane from Seattle in FA. Their 3-4 front is Liuget/Mebane/Bosa. BALT first 3 picks filled holes.

With our 6 games in NFC West and 4 against AFC East, it is looking like CLE and SF have very good chance of picking at the top. Next year at this time should be a very good looking roster.

  41. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

NYJ has a lopsided cap imbalance at 3-4 DE, so what do they do? Add Jarvis Jenkins FA from Bears.

  42. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Says real time but have to wonder if current after JAX FA pickups. Also look at team cash payrolls.

  43. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

We play them this year, used both the draft and FA for serious upgrades. Barring injuries, expect a loss this year when we play.

  44. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

OG Matt Slauson expendable after 2nd Rd Cody Whitehall and his rookie slotted salary. Gotta pay for their FA pickups.

To bolster the oline Bears also picked up RT Bobby Massie. Three FA starters and 2 rookie starters for their front seven, added to Pernell McPhee OLB and Eddie Goldman NT. For oline a rookie starter Whitehall LG and FA Massie RT.

We relied solely on the draft, Beadles and Garnett added, and hbope Trenton Brown takes over for out of shape AD. Buckner DE added and Boone left. Thanks Jed for the foresight of slow building the roster and tanking this season.

  45. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Well Bakkentom, on the upside, Baalke has stacked the competition pretty deep at OL/DB/WR.
I still think there’s options awaiting, for some of the Cap Budget, once cuts begin through Camps.

Our biggest concerns are likely to be with Chip finding his trigger Man at QB.
Don’t rule out a deal for Kaep either.
Especially if Fitz and the NYJ can’t find common ground.
Kaep has apparently sought a gig with the NYJ, which might suggest he’d be willing to rework a new deal if offered.
Kaep for Mo certainly works for me, if there were a way to exchange similar value Contracts of course.

One thing they’re not in SF. Flamboyant spenders.
Being young and hungry just might work better for Chip in the end.
    Time will tell….

  46. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

NYJ needs OT. Why is TB allowed to whither away AD trade value. Unretire, beef up his body, and give him playing time before a trade before the deadline in October.
