The 49ers tried to play a 21st century football game with no wide receivers. Fail. Kendrick Bourne: 2 receptions. Dante Pettis: zero. AZ secondary: smoke break.
DC Robert Saleh had an entire offseason to figure out how to defend against squirt-ball QBs. Fail. Kyler Murray: 11 carries, 100 yards and almost always on critical third down plays.
Other than that, they ended the game like they did last year’s SB, with the ball in their hands and the game to be won. Fail. Unable to gain 5 yards on two attempts from the AZ 16 yard line.
Kyle Shanahan‘s offense is amazing until it tries to function inside the opponent’s 10 yard line. He had all offseason to think of some creative ways to score down there, but twice Sunday he went four and out and once settled for a FG.
The $17 million guy the Niners kept while trading away Deforest Buckner had 1 tackle Sunday to mar an otherwise invisible day. Arik Armstead.
Neither Trent Taylor nor Jordan Reed made much of an impact, either.
The next two games are against conventional pocket passer QBs, so maybe the defense will look much better. We hope so, since they won’t have Deebo Samuel back for another two games. Maybe rookie WR Brandon Aiyuk will show up next week and do a reasonable impersonation of an NFL WR.
Jimmy Garoppolo‘s stats look reasonably okay, but he only converted 2 of 11 third down opportunities. That’s 9 stalled drives. You won’t win many games with that kind of performance.
Belichick 1-0, Brady 0-1. There’s that.
Our division is one of the toughest and it looks to be tougher this year. Our offense didn’t look very good overall, our oline just couldn’t get it done and Jimmy was anything but clutch. We should have won that game. And, like you said Skeebs our defense can’t contain mobile QB’s. We are in for a true fight this year.
According to PFF, Javon Kinlaw was third highest rated rookie in week one.
Monday Morning QB time.
On the 4th and goal I would put in Jeff Wilson to get that tough yard and run behind Trent Williams and Tomlinson because we had a third string center starting.
Need a TE/LB rather than Dontae Johnson as your upback in punt formation.
Hard to sustain offense when you can’t convert 3rd downs.
These comments are hindsight and what second guessing gets you.
Kittle has a sprained knee and is day to day.
The Niners might bring in Sanu for a look at WR.
Sanu is probably better than what Pettis has shown Bullit.
We’re WR challenged to say the least.
Fingers crossed that Deebo and Aiyuk can become a productive pair.
What will make this weekend’s game against the Jest is we might see a lot of Frank Gore since Laveon Bell is hurt.
That’ll be bittersweet.
“49ers are signing former Patriots’ WR Mohamed Sanu.”
I’m totally pissed about the empty stadium here.
2 games I would be attending and, with a little luck, might have been able to meet some players at the bus gate.
Still holding out hope to get a signature / photo op with Frank while he’s here, playing for Gang (fuk’n) Green.
See where this sh!t goes…
Sanu is a local Jersey guy too.
He and Kevin White are likely just as pissed about empty seats in their home return games as I am.
If nothing else, it should serve as motivation I’d hope.
Jimmy and the passing game better show up in better rhythm than they did last week.
Well, this season’s going into the shitter in a hurry: “The 49ers are placing CB Richard Sherman on IR today, sources say. He’ll be sidelined at least three weeks. Exact injury unclear but am told it’s a calf strain.”
Niners sign ex Steeler CB Brian Allen
Witherspoon is in concussion protocol
Kittle ruled OUT for Sunday.
“Dee Ford has been downgraded to OUT.”
This guy is never healthy.
What Steve Young sees Garoppolo having same growing pains he did

Niners used to have what Maiocco described as GPS games.
This could be one of them as this is an early East Coast game, and the lineup is riddled with injuries.
Time for the backups to step up and players to emerge that will carry the team. A deep gut check but the result should be a 10 point plus victory.
27-13 Niners.
49ers inactive players:
TE George Kittle (knee)
DE Dee Ford (neck)
QB C.J. Beathard
OL Tom Compton
LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles
CB Jason Verrett (hamstring)
I feel NJ’s pain today.
Schedule came out with a once in a lifetime chance for him to see back to back games near his home.
Total botched handling of a pandemic cost him his opportunity.
We shouldn’t be where we are today but someone thinks the stock market is more important than people’s lives. Some people are in great shape because the market is booming. More people are hurting because of their economic circumstances caused by the virus.
I do feel that the NFL should make it a blanket policy that either all home games should be open to certain levels of fan attendance or if that isn’t possible than no teams should have fans. It is about fairness and giving certain teams home field advantage. Either everyone needs to be able to do it or nobody.
One thing that was pointed out in Niners pregame show.
Remember last year when some people thought the Niners should have taken Quinnen Williams instead of Nick Bosa.
Today Niners also face Williams who did very little to distinguish himself as a rookie.
There is no question that Niners took the right player in Bosa.
First play from scrimmage. Wow!!!!
“They are bringing out a cart for Nick Bosa. This does not look good. Possible left knee.”
There goes the season.
“They are bringing out the cart for 49ers DL Solomon Thomas.”
Crap these injuries are devastating but there are a lot of players being carted off today in the league.
Next weeks opponent Saquan Barkley carted off with leg injury and
Denver QB Drew Lock is also out.
Depending how Garoppolo responds in locker room to treatment they will let him go until they are up by 21 or sit him and go with mullen
And the hits keep coming: “Jimmy Garoppolo WILL NOT play in the second half.
Raheem Mostert has a knee injury and he’s OUT.”
Nice to get a win, even against a joke of a Pop Warner team, but with the injuries last week and today, any thoughts of a division title or super bowl run seem a lot further away than they were before the season started.
At this point, we just have to hope Bosa’s career is not negatively affected in the long term. And Hope has been a shitty sucker’s bet so far in 2020.
Total bittersweet win. Injuries are happening all over the league. Probably due to no OTA’s and pre-season. Can’t see us winning against any good teams.
“49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Nick Bosa is most likely an ACL and it’s a high-ankle sprain for 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo.”
The turf is supposed to be super sticky because it was brand new and Shanahan hadn’t seen so many leg injuries in a game This was also reported by Maiocco.
Garoppolo high ankle sprain.
Add Coleman to injury list with a knee. MacKinnon might be the starter depending on Mostert and Coleman diagnosis
Niners have to go back onto this field next week. Footwear adjustment will be important next week.
Armstaed said the turf is trash in a tweet.
Maybe the move the game to a different location if the turf is a problem.
For a newer high tech outdoor stadium, the first thing you saw was no granules kicking up.
Seems to me there’s someone at the League level who needs to get in there and find out why.
Not quite sure how this is accomplished but, I’ve been told there’s a ‘Zambonie-type’ machine that grooms the surface.
Players called it sticky, I called it tight.
Memories of the ‘green asphalt’ back in the early days of Veteran’s stadium in Philly.
Either way, this comes down to player safety and that rests squarely on The League.
Bullit I appreciate the sentiments but, like everything we’ll dealing with, no one wants to take responsibility anymore.
Everything is about liabilities and the potential for lawsuits.
I get it but, we’re better than this.
Hiding from the lawyers is no way to solve a problem.
Stay home, we don’t want you on the premises until you sign the disclaimer?
Pure Chickensh!t mentality.
Well here ya go…
