Can Anybody Play This Game?

June is here, which means three more months until the grand opening of The Return to Mediocrity Era. Featuring an ever evolving cast of entirely forgettable coaches and players. Hip hip kerplunk!

Today, we’ll look at the 2012 Draft class, which should be coming into its own this year. Hmmm. There’s nobody left from that class except backup OL guy Joe Looney. Nevermind.

Rewind. Today, we’ll look at the 2013 Draft picks who have yet to prove they are worth a shit. For the team to improve this year, they must become starters or major role players — or go on the BUST list: Tank Carradine, Vance McDonald, Quinton Dial, Quinton Patton, Corey Lemonier.

None of these guys has done squat in their two years here. With the retirement of Justin Smith and the banishment of Ray McDonald, both Dial and Carradine are expected to step in and cut the mustard this year. Patton has mostly been inactive his first two years and Lemonier was bumped from the OLB rotation last year by rookie Aaron Lynch. McDonald was injured most of last year and doesn’t look anywhere close to replacing Vernon Davis, who is probably playing his last year in SF.

The 2014 Draft class performance is even more necessary for the team’s success in 2015. Carlos Hyde must reasonably replace Frank Gore, or the team has no running game. Jimmie Ward was over matched as the slot CB last year. He has to do better, or it’s another first round bust. Center Marcus Martin filled in poorly for the injured Dan Kilgore last year and both he and Brandon Thomas are expected to help replace Mike Iupati this year, and Alex Boone next year.

But it’s the secondary where the 2014 class either swims or the Niner defense sinks. Three CBs from that class, a 4th, 5th, and 6th rounder (Dontae Johnson, Keith Reaser, Kenneth Acker) are trying to replace Chris Culliver and Perrish Cox.

Nobody from the 2015 class is expected to make a significant contribution this year. So, the success of the 2015 team is going to depend largely on the success of Trent Baalke’s 2013 and 2014 draft classes. For the first time in Baalke’s tenure, his draft picks will be necessary to the team NOW, and not when they get off IR or have finished their “project” classes.

We’re going to have to make a large Cap decision with Aldon this year too.
Makes sense to see how he looks going through Camp and maybe make an offer prior to the season.
He took a restructured deal already, so, we’ll see what happens.
Brooks is likely done too, or close to it.
Baalke is going heavy with WRs and DBs trying to plan for turnover there as well.

Gotta hope Tank and Dial can step up, while they try to get Armstead ready to contribute as well.
It’s a constant game of Poker.
Draw a few, drop a few.
Bowman won’t be what he was either, until he can mentally accept his surgically restructured knee.
Everyone seems to agree, it takes a year to get over a major knee injury in this game.

Gotta think ILBs will be high on the Draft List for next year.
Not even sure what that Class is likely to afford us either.

  2. Unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Let alone the 16 mill he’s losing for quitting.

He won’t see another contract like that. Not sure what leverage he has.

  3. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

If Anthony isn’t committed to playing for SF any longer, deal him.
9ers retain his Rights through ’19 as Chuck stated.
All I can ask for is, guys putting in the work to win.
If Boone isn’t committed, he’s gone too.

I have no problems with these guys getting paid as much as they can.
    Just earn it.
Don’t go through the motions, just to collect a paycheck.

  4. RTFireflyNo Gravatar says:

Any team that receives him in a trade and Davis both would still be committed to his contract under the CBA if I’m not mistaken. It’s the same tactic AP just tried.

There are plenty of teams that would kill for a competent young right tackle.

  5. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

If Anthony truly is having concerns over his health, I can understand the decision.
We’ll see how this shakes out over time.
I won’t judge anyone in this game for thinking about their long term health concerns.
Especially in light of tragic examples like Duerson and Seau.

  6. NoFear49erNo Gravatar says:

The question is not whether Davis is justified in considering his health. That question is built in to every player’s mind in the NFL wanting to play and signing a contract. Can any of them think in a game of head-first high-speed collisions for money they won’t take their turn in the barrel?

The only question is would Davis and everybody else, including Justin Smith, still be playing here if Harbaugh was left to coach and they thought there was a chance they would compete for a ring.

There’s nobody in the football world now not thinking the bottom fell out for the Niners. And they all agree on why.

As good as Baalke is, or thought to be by some, at drafting if not managing, what would the season be looking like with Harbaugh still here with a new GM? Deny it’s not a helluva lot better, keeping a straight face.

The Vegas line says 8-8 and that was before A. Davis quit. With Harbaugh we’re looking at 11 wins minimum.

  7. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

    Plenty to ponder NoFear49er.
No question there’s the element of the Coaching changes at play here.
Be it Harbaugh/Baalke/Jed/Roman, we’ve been hammering on each other for months about, what/when and why?

Given my vantage point, I’m still in the same boat I’ve always been.
Another fan of the 9ers trying to find an upside in yet another Coaching change.
I’ll die a 9er fan, I just hope they don’t kill me in the process.

  8. NoFear49erNo Gravatar says:

Hey NJ49er, I wasn’t hammering on anyone except Jed York and Trent Baalke. Some arrogant assholes lost their minds and began telling me I couldn’t be hammering on those two without unanimous consent of the herd.

From my perspective, you are welcome to fix the blame where you see fit. I don’t have to agree and I won’t call you any names for not seeing it like I do. Even though I might be thinking them. Ha!

  9. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

    It’s all good NoFear49er.
    I get it completely.
Trust me, it ain’t easy trying to find answers with this team, and the sh!tstorm that comes along with it.

  10. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

We’ve got to replace Vernon and Brooks, decide whether to extend Aldon, (maybe Boone while they attempt to revamp the OL, and Secondary), all while trying to determine, if Kaep is the long term answer we’ve sought since the days of Joe and Steve.
While also doing this on the fly with another Coaching Staff.

If managing this game was easy, we’d all be doing it.

  11. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

RayMac continues to make news for all the wrong reasons –

  12. phil fanNo Gravatar says:

Thanks NJ but I can’t bring myself to read anymore about Ray Macs crisis and legal situation- so I’ll pass on that one. Nothing I can do. It’s up to him and those who care about him personally to do all they can to see he gets the help he needs.
    Prayers for Ray.

  13. Unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Bullshit NoFear. ALL These things happening may have happened regardless of the coaching staff.

  14. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Yes, Chuck, isn’t it pleasant for you to think so. Meanwhile, back in the real world …

  15. Sir Spitblood from GeneoushireNo Gravatar says:

Chuck’s narrative is so far off….. it’s enjoyable.

  16. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Cleveland Browns had an awesome draft. Also a 3 yr 21 million deal for FA Tramon Williams. All they are missing is QB.

Cleveland GM calls TB and says let’s get it done. What is the answer.

  17. Unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

    Prove it, skeevie.

    Circumstantial evidence is just that.

You all scream and cry for proof Harbaugh lost the team despite all the talk around just that, but bend over BACWARDS to fit your dogma into the current situation with the same amount of evidence. Meaning none. Just admit you are blowing smoke and move on.

Otherwise it’s happy happy grab-ass land here. Let’s make fun of people who disavow our sheepleness.

  18. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Sorry you’re not having any fun here, Chumpy. But thanks for stopping by, acting the fool, whining about being a loser, and giving us all so much to be thankful for.

  19. NoFear49erNo Gravatar says:

Chuck, wild ass brain farts are not equal to logical deductions.

The weather guys say 95°, clear and sunny by application of scientific methods to the data available. You say, “bullshit. prove it. I say it’s going to be freezing rain and 34° and my guess is as good as yours.”

You were all too eager to convict RayMac on circumstantial evidence. What, you were lying about your absolute confidence in it? Or it only works in your favor?

Perfect tag line for your blog. Run with it!

  21. Sir Spitblood from GeneoushireNo Gravatar says:

What I’d like to know, I mean besides the question, “When did Chuck become insane?” is why is the charade so important to Chuck. I get it… kinda. Chuck’s fiercely loyal to the team and wants to be known as a guy who’s been loyal through thick and thin, bleeding red and gold – one of those white trash dudes who flies his Dale Ernhart flag in front of his house (no offense V). And I understand creating a narrative early on that supports the team, yada, yada, yada. But when that narrative deviates soooooooooooooo far from reality, and you’re denying facts and all evidence to the contrary of your narrative, you start to really lose credibility even with your own contingency. There are homers out there right now who are saying, “Man, I’m a homer, but at least I’m not an Unca_Chuck homer.”

Delusional thinking is when you are confronted with overwhelming evidence to the contrary of what you’re thinking and saying. Chuck is clearly (and it’s a cliched insult so it loses its effectiveness) delusional. We all blog with Chuck daily, but it doesn’t make Chuck any less delusional. Have we become conditioned to accept Chuck’s insanity? Again, delusional thought is when you’re faced with overwhelming evidence to the contrary of what you believe. Chuck is delusional. Look what he just wrote, “ALL These things happening may have happened regardless of the coaching staff.” The odds of this happening, if you consider everything that’s happened, are so astronomical it’s delusional.

  22. NoFear49erNo Gravatar says:

Jed York, you just robbed your fans and players of any hope of contending this year. Do you think it will have any effect on them or their willingness to workout, practice and play through pain and injuries for the next few seasons with scant possibility of any payoff in terms of winning a ring or much of anything else? “No! Of course not!” “It’s just bad luck how many players are quitting on me before the season starts.” “The same thing would have happened no matter what I did.” “Anyone seen my teddy bear?”

  23. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Here is TB’s reality. Jed last minute smoke bomb derailed the Gase train. Had to settle for interim help at HC and OC. Any halo effect from the Harbaugh years to attract good coaches is gone.

How to sweeten the transition is to accept a minimum 2 yr rebuild from here. A possible Colin improvement is not worth the risk and wait now. Only trade with a situation like Cleveland who will overpay to add the last piece. Trade for the equivalent of two top 15 1st RD picks for 2016 and 2017. Want two franchise players at least.

For this season Blaine Gabbert will be the one. See how it works out. Draft a franchise or developmental QB in 2016. Only trade Colin for max value.

  24. Unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

How many games has Adam Gase won as a head coach, Tom?

Ain’t you guys putting the cart before the horse?

  25. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Chuck, I am willing to cut our losses here. We cannot close the deal on a norv turner or similar. Gase was the best we could do. Cleveland could really use him now.

NN likes the promise of Goff from California next year. Let a credible OC decide.

  26. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

It’s not a question of whether Gase was a good choice or not. It’s a question of Jed meddling in the decision.

  27. Unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

    Based on what? More speculation?

    Yet another unnamed source?

  28. Sir Spitblood from GeneoushireNo Gravatar says:

Chuck has a tough time staying focused…. Focus, Chuck… focus.

  29. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

IIRC, Gase himself reported what happened.

  30. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The Denver Bronco media guys and what they think of the 49ers
which is porobably what the rest of the NFL is now thinking

If you search you can find evidence. The stuff Chuckles makes up has no evidence to be found. Simple as that.

  31. Sir Spitblood from GeneoushireNo Gravatar says:

Bullit – we all know Chuck is the class clown, but on one hand it just gets tiring watching his relentless denial and delusional thought. On the other hand, though, this level of delusional thought is almost undocumented, and from a clinical stand-point Chuck’s behavior is off the charts entertaining. I feel like Gorillas in the Mist. I should change my name to Diane Fosey from Geneoushire and start documenting Chuck’s behavior.

  32. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Go Warriors!

Lebron bows to football great Jim Brown before the game.
Guess who is sitting next to Brown? Eddie D.

Which brings up why isn’t Jed York at the W’s home games to support the local team?

  33. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Warriors might lose if Curry doesn’t wake up.
He’s letting the Cavs dictate to him.
    Curry is playing meekly.
Halftime down by 7 and Curry has only 3 points.

  34. phil fanNo Gravatar says:

“Which brings up why isn’t Jed York at the W’s home games to support the local team?”

He hates sports. No money in it for him. He doesn’t care what fans think?

  35. Unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Kerr had to bench Curry. He looks lost out there. Got to wonder about that head injury he suffered vs Houston.

  36. Unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Why doesnt Jed wear Niners underwear?

What is Eddie doing on the Cleveland sidelines?

  37. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Eddie is from Youngstown, Ohio and I wouldn’t doubt he’s a Cav’s fan.

  38. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Not helping that Harrison Barnes is 0 for 8.
Kerr needs to put someone else in.

  39. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Another story about Kap trade dated today.
Story reiterrates Niners have had the worst offseason.

  40. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Curry has woken up and David Lee has made a difference with his passing and playmaking.
    W’s trying steal one.

  41. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Something written just to get attention perhaps?

  42. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Boone is running with second team.

  43. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Back to the Reid story, he says there is no story and he’s good for this season.

Reid is on the same path as Steve Young having sustained multiple concussions in a short period of time.

He might have a short career because of this and the next severe concussion will expedite his retirement.

  44. Unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Christ, Bullit. Don’t you get it? Junior Seau committed suicide. Dave Duerson committed suicide. The suicides among NFL players is staggering in recent memory. Countless players are struggling with health issues due to concussions. Why? CTE.

You think Reid’s grandstanding? God you are stupid beyond reason.

Why? Because you think Borland quit because Harbaugh left. You think Patrick Willis quit because Harbaugh left. You think J Smoth left because Harbaugj left. Not because they face a very real risk of dying young.

And none of these twits here will say anything about this most retarded post. Eric Reid has already suffered through some concussions. Do you think he isn’t worried sbout his health? No he wants to play to the media. Unfreakingbelievable.

you did it Bullit. You said the stupidest thing in the history of blogdom. For you? That’s saying something, all the rest of you just cover for this pathetic twit.

Backpedal, skippy. Walk that f$&@&er back.

Sorry. I thought we were men in a bar, not children on a playground.

You don’t seem to get the fact that players are concerned about their health. You call out Willis, Borland, J Smith, and now AD for being soft and quitting because things didn’t go their way.

I call bullshit on that. And you act like a child over this stuff.

  48. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Again with the hyperbolic bullcrap?

Willis and Justin Smith didn’t retire because of life threatening injury.

If you are so sensitive to all this you should stop watching.
You’re a damn hypocrite waiting to see the big hit and relishing it and then preaching about head injuries.
I don’t remember you being upset when Whitner knocked Pierre Thomas out cusing a fumble.

Just like boxing these injuries come with the profession and that’s why they get the big bucks.

  49. Unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

    Leadership should be readership?

What in God’s name are you talking about? Blogs?

  50. phil fanNo Gravatar says:

Curry woke up too late. Lee was good inside and hopefully these two will pull it out in game 4 Thursday. Nice to see Curry on fire again. I’ll predict the Ws get the win in Game 4 Thursday. The Cavs are good but looked to be tiring towards the end of this game including LBJ. Gotta grab one in CLE and close these guys out on Sunday…or fight it out for 7.

React much? Bullit I thought your comment about the Chron writer possibly hyping the Reid injuries was clear = not about Reid, about the writer hyping it maybe.

Blake Bell looking good in OTAs = good hands. Carradine not so much. Kaepernick has one more year to prove himself before the Niners make a move. Trade? It would crush this team to deal him this year but who knows?

  55. Unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

There you go with your usual stupidity. Players play. Players get hurt. See the connection? I don’t say I don’t like it. I don’t say anything about it you feeb. You metal midget. I’m saying the PLAYERS themselves are concerned about what’s happening.

Christ. You can’t tell the diff between Reid an Steve Young? A17 year career compared to a 2 year career?

  56. RTFireflyNo Gravatar says:

Lebron sure shot my “Warriors in 5” prediction all to hell. At least Steph was feelin’ it there towards the end. Now if Barnes could hit (anything), the Cavs would be in the trouble I foresaw for them.

  57. Unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Your ineptitude is astounding. You are now officially in the hall of fame for idiocy. Village idiots bow in your presence.

Spitty reluctantly relinquishes his two-pronged crown.

  58. Unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Most of the blame for the game goes on Curry for his lackadaisical passing and dogshit shooting. Kerr should have pulled Barnes as well. Lee was doing well and Livingston wasn’t turning the ball over at least.

Still think the Dubs win this, but game 4 gets real big.

  59. RTFireflyNo Gravatar says:

I think Kerr made a mistake by pulling Lee when he was kickin’ butt, but that’s easy to say in hindsight, and even if true would be the first mistake I’ve seen him make.

  60. Unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Speights should have been in as well. Except for the missed layup, he played pretty eel when given the chance.

  61. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bullit I was reading the piece on Reid earlier today from PFT.
Ironically, my Son and I were asking the question about whether Reid would be the next to declare an early retirement several weeks ago.
A guy like Ronnie Lott was prominent in my thinking as well, simply because of his playing style and the position at Safety.

Considering that Dr York is the Chairman of the Leagues’ Health & Safety Advisory Committee, I wonder if there’s a little more info being shared in SF that these guys are privy to?

  62. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Learn to read you dumbass troll before you leap to hyperbolic conclusions and mischaracterizations.
I never said anything derogatory about Reid but you are the boy that always cries wolf.
I get it that you must come here and be a clown troll and you were trying your hardest yesterday.

  63. Sir Spitblood from GeneoushireNo Gravatar says:

Bullit – What did I tell you about the Warriors? At their heart, they’re just happy to be here. No heart of a champion. All starters are playing like crap, and Kerr is letting the Cavs dictate pace. The Warriors absolutely need to be trapping Lebron as he brings the ball up the floor. It’ll create numbers mis-matches for the Cavs, and easy buckets if Lebron breaks the traps, but that’s what the Warriors want anyway. vThey need to pickup the pace and run, and they need to create flow.

Pace is killing the Warriors, and Kerr absolutely must trap Lebron bringing the ball up the floor.

But aside from that, the Warriors’ players are playing like they’re just happy to be there – no heart of a champion that I can see. Curry’s sphincter is so tight he might not be able to walk again for months after the series is over. And Draymond Green is a different dude all together.

Right now, instead of thinking about winning, the Warriors need to think about salvaging some pride.

  64. bullitNo Gravatar says:

You are right. Curry did not lead or resemble the MVP for 3 quarters. He had the deer in headlights look . If your shot isn’t falling you take the ball inside and dish. The play at the end of the 3rd quarter summed up the game. Curry has an open layup but is .01 second too late as the red light goes off and he still has not released the shot. The look on his face was the same deer in headlights. He should’ve been pissed.

Agree they have to get more fast break points and go up tempo as Cleveland has no depth and can’t keep up. Warriors need to run them out of the arena. If Lebron is going to shoot make him take baseline fade away jumpers which he can’t hit.

W’s need to attack the cup and either get fouled or make the layups. That is the strategy against a short handed team.

When Curry is not doing it nobody else stepped forward to take the scoring load. Everyone was passing up shots until the clock ran down and they had to shoot.

Things have to change or it’s the end of the line this time.

  65. Sir Spitblood from GeneoushireNo Gravatar says:

For me, the entire series changed the minute Maurice missed that dunk. Game 4 is a must win for the Warriors, and they can’t go out like chumps like they have the last two games. If they do go out like chumps, they won’t make much noise down the road, and Curry will forever question his MVP. This is shaping up to be a disaster. Hopefully the Warriors show some pride in game 4 and make a series out of it.

  66. bullitNo Gravatar says:

When you think of Anthony Davis and his retirement there is something very wrong about it. The timing was just awful for the Niners front office making it difficult to come up with replacements.
Equally bothersome is how he did it. He sent out a “tweet” to announce his future. A team pays you $20 mil you owe them a face to face meeting where you have to look them in the eye and state your intentions. It works both ways and the FO would never send a tweet to fire somebody. That’s chickenshit and leaves no possibility of closure.

Equally disingenuous is Anthony Davis saying he’s been thinking about retiring for several years so he did not sign his contract extension in good faith, never intending to fulfill it to it’s completion.

  67. RTFireflyNo Gravatar says:

Well, Wilhoite signed, so at least the offseason hasn’t been a complete bust.

  68. Sir Spitblood from GeneoushireNo Gravatar says:

Bullit – Herny David Thoreau was famous for saying something along the lines of,”The only place for an honest man in a corrupt society is in jail.”

I don’t blame Anthony Davis. I hear what you’re saying, and I appreciate your loyalty to your team, but when Rome burns solders scatter. The timing could have been better for the 49ers, but what does Anthony Davis really owe the 49ers? Owners re-nig on contracts without guaranteed money all the time. Why can’t a player? Anthony played hard for the 49ers and got paid well. On a year-by-year basis, both entities held up their end of the contract. Does Anthony owe the 49ers a decision pre draft? Nope. It’s a courtesy like offering a two week notice. But it’s not owed. And considering that Rome just burned to the ground, nobody’s gonna blame Anthony for texting Tomsula his resignation or tweeting afterward. Mickey Mouse gets treated like, well, Mickey Mouse.

If Caesar was corrupt, I’d owe no allegiance…. neither would my boy, Thoreau.

  69. Unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Dubs will win spitty. Why? Delly won’t have another 20 pt game. Curry will wake up.

You are the quintessential fair weather fan.

Dubs are playing like shit and still close. Whatever goes on, curry needs to take much better care of the ball.

I too bought into the “Warriors in 5” hype after Irving forgetting they still have LBJ who we haven’t contained yet. Win in 7 I’ll still be happy. Tomorrows game is huge, a must win. Otherwise see ya. I think they win tho. Glad to see Lee in there scoring in the paint. Bench Barnes and whoever isn’t scoring, we need faster tempo and contest James with the ball = the reverse of our previous strategy of ‘letting him get his’. Wear him out!
