California Dreaming

The Philadelphia Eagles wowed the world during this year’s Free Agency period, but the results so far have not born out the Dream Team label plastered across their foreheads by one of their FA signings, Vince Young. They are 1-2 and living in the NFC East basement, despite having a top ten offense and a near top ten defense.

They opened the season by beating the Rams in St. Louis, which was quite nice, but have since lost to the Falcons and Giants. Losing at home to the 49ers would surely start a Fire Andy Reid rebellion in the team’s fan base. There’s probably a rebellion already started, since we’re talking about fans so notoriously nasty that they even have their own nationally recognized logo: The Philly Boo Birds. Any 49er fans attending this game had best bring a body guard and some beer-proof clothing. A kevlar vest and a hard hat wouldn’t be too far over the line.

The Eagles have no reason to think they will lose this game. The 49ers have the worst offense in the league and their top ten defense has been compiled largely from playing two teams with pitiful offenses — the Seahawks and the Bengals. In addition, the Eagles have basically slaughtered hell out of the Niners the past few years, with the Niner secondary completely overmatched by DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin.

If Jim Harbaugh somehow coaxes a win out of his team this Sunday, he will be viewed around the league as a miracle worker or a magician, take your pick.

The only thing going for the 49ers next Sunday is that this seems to be the year that teams that have your number don’t. Buffalo broke the New England jinx and Detroit broke the Minnesota jinx. Both those teams are legitimately 3-0, though, and not illegitimately 2-1.

If you have surmised that I am not keen on our chances this week, you would be correct. Barring a Ted Ginn eruption or six turnovers from the Eagles, there seems little chance for us to win. The offensive line would have to suddenly gel, the pass rush would have to be awesome, the running game would have to explode, and the passing game would have to get more than 5.9 yards per attempt. In season, team wide massive turn arounds are about as frequent as an honest word from a politician’s lips.

The Eagles most vulnerable area is their offensive line, which isn’t much better than the 49ers’ line. They’ve also given up the 3rd most rushing yards in the league. In addition, Michael Vick has a swollen right hand, which could make him fumble prone or even keep him out of the game altogether. It hasn’t mattered much who’s playing QB for the them when they’ve faced the 49ers recently, since our pass rush has not been a force. That absolutely has to change this week, or we will be toast.

Frank Gore might not play in this game, which would allow us to spring Kendall Hunter on an unsuspecting Eagles team. There would no doubt be more runs to the outside with Hunter in the game, instead of the meat and potatoes smash into the line 2.5 yard effort we’ve seen all year.

If the 49ers do win this game, it will almost certainly be another ugly, blue collar, nail biter win. And if they did pull that off, there’s no telling how far this 2011 Niner team could go. In that sense, this game gives the team an opportunity to take a giant stride toward credibility in the league. And in the team’s own heart.

There is no betting line yet on the Philly game because of Vick.
Most likely the Niners will be around 7.5 pt underdogs.
Chron had an article about the new stadium. All the anti-Santa Clara stadium posters came out.
I say just build it. To change venues menas another 10 year delay. Niners deserve better.
They had John McVay at the press conference promoting the new stadium. Jed would be wise to use him as a consigliore. He was vital in building the old Niners and seems to not get much credit.

As for the new stadium Carmen Policy is waiting for Santa Clara to fail before he steps in.
They might be playing at the Stick for another 20 years which would be a joke. Question would be will it still be standing as it’s falling apart?

saw some replies to me on the other thread
SO in case you missed my wit and wisdom …

WOW that put the cat amongst the pigeons !

    OK one at a time

The 2 media darlings Jets and Eagles are not in 1st place
    I am curious besides Namdhi
and Hasslebeck who should they have signed? ”

the best part of this one was watching asamogua and seeing that the only people he could bring down sunday were his own teammates !
if you saw my posts i never once wanted us to sign either namdi a. or hasselback !
(btw i WAS one of the few people it would seem , who thought the carlos rogers signing was a good one and was also pushing for sop over franklin … and have been for years )
what i was pushing for wasn’t even a big name free agent haul (CHUCK) just barry cofeild and j. joseph ! NOT tons of mid to low price gambles like we got !
i still do think that philly will get it together , just not this week !
i also think that dr. deyorkian is still putting in his two cents worth , and is holding jed back from really going all out to do what he should and wants to do to build this team up ! that was the main point i was trying to make !

” It isn’t about who we should have signed as FAs this year. It’s about who we should NOT have drafted on the Offensive Line over the last 6 or 7 years or whatever ”

is it just me or is our 0-line lookig much better this yr. ?IMHO of your listed group ,
staley is pretty good and will only be better now that we have harbaugh and solari here !
snyder was a fourth round pick and not a bad one at that ! i was never big on baas as the first pick in rd. two , but the giants seem to think he was worth the big money they paid him … as a center !
iupati is a beast and anthony davis wouldn’t have been my first choice , but you’ll never hear me complain about using a high draft pick on an 0-lineman ! we can only hope that given time , the line with two rooks from last year , a new center and raw rachal will get it together asap ! don’t forget we have a new system for them to absorb as well !
” Rob, Philly won’t win their division, let alone the Super Bowl. ”

baalke might have done a much better job of drafting than i first thought ! considering aldon and hunter , my high hopes for copernicus and even gulliver looking good … this draft looks pretty darn good !

    NJ 49er

i like anthony davis too and think he should be a good T for us!

  3. robNo Gravatar says:

i hope vick starts for philly ! if he does we’ll be able to knock him out and their unprepared backup will throw us a couple picks !
this way we pull the BIG upset ! if they sit vick and prepare their backup , the whole team will rally around him … and we lose !

  4. robNo Gravatar says:

imho vince young might just turn out to be philly’s best free agent signing ! btw he was looked at as an andy reed project more than a big-time free agent imo

  5. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

I’m pretty sure that’s just you, Buddy. LOL

Seriously… they’ve been awful so far!! Even the squirrel sees that!! King me!!!! 🙂 !

  6. BergerNo Gravatar says:

A victory Sunday might portend we are starting to learn our playbook a lot better. I think it is obvious that isn’t the case so far.

  7. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Before the first game I called the Philly game a definite loss. Right now I give a 40% chance of winning. I’d say that is an improvement from my pre-season outlook.

  8. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

It’s probably jet lag from going to and from Reno and Sacto each week that has lightened your brain cells.

  9. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Maybe it is Jets lag from having to watch them on TV two times so far this year.

  10. BergerNo Gravatar says:

The other thing is part of that brighter outlook is that I don’t view Philly as powerful as I did back then.
The biggest problem I see for us is we obviously don’t have our playbook learned yet. In fact, not even close.

  11. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Nofear, I’m all for calling that play 3x Sunday in Philly.

  12. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Check that. Or as many times as it takes to run that play RIGHT!

  13. unca chuckNo Gravatar says:

Was that the series that VD dropped the 20 yard sideline pass?
VD and Crabs will never be taken seriously unless they stop dropping passes like they do. 1-2 a game is unacceptable.
VD ended up having a big game, but Crabs was shit. I wish they’d give Williams more reps.

  14. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

It’s a black and white world for you, Chuck. A guy is either great or crap. Crabs was neither. He had a pretty spectacular catch in the end zone that we were jobbed out of. He’s played two games after being out all TC. He’s a good WR who will get better.

  15. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

    If his foot holds up.

  16. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Give Williams more reps? How bout give him ANY reps?
Kyle Williams played zero snaps vs the Bengals. That’s just wrong.

  17. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

And VD is taken very seriously.

  18. unca chuckNo Gravatar says:

VD is taken very seriously. By himself. Skeebs, Crabs and VD regularly drop passes. Crabs and Smith are rarely in synch because Crabs rarely practices with the team, and has missed all his camps. It did look like he got screwed out of the TD. Crabs should have complained he was in, or Harbaugh (or a coach upstairs) should have red-flagged that play. It was a wasted opportunity.
The stinking play should have been reviewed anyway due to the new NFL TD policy. Whether it was called a TD or not on the field. I was surprised it wasn’t challenged.

  19. unca chuckNo Gravatar says:

Crabs is a good solid #2 posession WR. Nothing more. He’s Joshua Morgan + a whole bunch of attitude.
    Edwards is missed already.

  20. BergerNo Gravatar says:

IMO, Crabs can get open in man coverage but struggles finding seems in zone and double coverage. In zone, think he’ll improve fast under Harbaugh.
    Where’s Phil?

  21. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

If Crabs decides he really wants to work at it, he can be pretty good. Thing is, after three missed training camps, a Diva Fight with VD, his unhappy body English with Alex, and his general attitude, a lot of folks are wondering if that will ever happen, at least here in SF.

So maybe we should say, ‘if his HEART holds up’.

  22. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

I was wondering about Phil myself. Did he drive off a cliff? Get hit with a coconut?

  23. bullitNo Gravatar says:

With the receivers in the NFL today it is important to make them part of the game plan and involve them in the first drive.
No more of this give the ball to Gore on the first five plays. Involve everyone and you have multiple threats. If you notice
when VD and Crabtree arethrown to early they have big games. It’ll loosen things up for Gore and the inside running game.

  24. barleyfreakNo Gravatar says:

“Kyle Williams played zero snaps vs the Bengals.”
Clearly he is being punished for his amazing TD catch the week before.

  25. unca chuckNo Gravatar says:

VD has, for his career, been among the league leaders in dropped passes. If he wants to be the all world click-clack bad-ass mofo that he fashions himself to be, then he shouldn’t be dropping so many balls. Get it? Of course not. You are blinded by his hyperbole. And shiny objects.
Did I mention bust, skippy? No. That was you. As usual, dogging me for something I didn’t say.

  26. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Barley, that’s just how the Giants operate. Some rookie will go 3 for 4 with a HR and the next day he’ll sit on the bench in favor of the 36 yo aging vet. I just don’t get it.

  27. unca chuckNo Gravatar says:

Last 3 years for drops among TEs in the NFL:

    27 Ben Watson CLV 137 120 17 12.41%
    28 Vernon Davis SF 190 165 25 13.16%
    29 Randy McMichael SD 75 65 10 13.33%
    30 Martellus Bennett DAL 82 71 11 13.41%
    31 Marcedes Lewis JAX 152 131 21 13.82%
    32 Daniel Graham DEN 91 78 13 14.29%
    33 Brandon Pettigrew DET 120 102 18 15.00%
    34 Fred Davis WAS 85 72 13 15.29%

Hmmm, no Tony Gonzalez or Jason Witten on that list.

  28. robNo Gravatar says:

OK guys , i’ve been reading your posts !
do you really want something to take seriously ?
well we have the only team in the league to have both
    VD and CRABS !
WOW and you thought you had it good when we were winning super bowls !

  29. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

You got a link to that list, Chuck? Curious what the first 26 guys percentages were.

  30. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Skeebs it is sorted from fewest drops to most. But they only show the top and bottom ten, for last three years and last year (VD doesn’t make the 2010 bottom ten, though Delanie Walker does!)

  31. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Yeah Rob, all we need now is a guy named Klapp or Clapper and we’d have the effing STD trifecta!

  32. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

NF, VD is not a bust, but he isn’t a ‘normal’ TE either. He’s more of a deep threat and super-blocker. Not as good as some other guys in traffic. Has some weird body control thing too – sometimes he looks like he is going to hurt himself just turning for a pass. Maybe too much muscle. Still, unless you have a Witten or a Heath Miller in your bag of tricks, you’re not going to replace him that easily.

  33. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Phil is active Berger, I had a quick exchange with him late last night on Chucks’ new Blog site.
Check in over there, I believe Spit has been banned already.

  34. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Banned already, who did he threaten to go to house and kill this time?

  35. BergerNo Gravatar says:

BTW, I’m a Vernon Davis fan. When we drafted him I was wanting him or Haloti Ngata. I still think either was a good pick.

  36. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Not sure what took place Berger, Chuck can answer that one I’m sure.

  37. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Niners are a 10 point underdog
as they finally posted a line for this game.

  38. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Interesting stats from Sando, somewhat belying the notion that Smith can’t handle the blitz or find the hot read:
    # of rushers QBR
    Four or fewer 81.2
    Five or more 115.0
    1+ DBs 158.3

  39. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Skeebs- He also had the 2nd or 3rd highest red zone rating last year.
Some like to call him Check Down Charlie, but I’d say those people haven’t watched Kevin Kolb.

  40. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

    Or Sam Bradford.

  41. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Alex Smith IS Check Down Charlie. I didn’t see any teams offering a 2nd rd pk and a Pro Bowl CB for Alex this offseason. And don’t either of you tell me you wouldn’t rather have Sam Bradford as your quarterback. You lie like a rug.
Bottom line: Alex Smith is the starting QB on the last ranked offense in the NFL. What time’s the parade?

  42. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

You want evidence that Alex is Check Down Charlie? Here ya go…this from Advanced NFL Stats: Under their “% Deep” category — pass att. > 15 yds., Alex ranks dead last at 3.3%. The next lowest was Tavaris Jackson at 11.3. Not even close.
Here’s the link to Check Down Charlie:

  43. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Ah, nothing stirs the blood of an Alex hater like a positive stat. Don’t choke on your Cheerios, Del.

  44. unca chuckNo Gravatar says:

NoFear, you have a problem with expecting your TE to catch passes? He’s a match-up problem, yes. But he rarely adjusts his routes for passes thrown his way, and he thinks he’s Barry Sanders after he catches the ball. This has led to fumbles. As he did last week.
As you can see, skippy, no bust in this post. Not for a couple years. VD was on his way to being a bust until Singletary (in one of his more lucid moments) called his ass out and pulled him from that Seattle game.
All your other blathering is your usual blather accusing others of so-called indiscretions. Try something new, skippy. You know not of what you speak.

  45. unca chuckNo Gravatar says:

As far as Spit goes, yeah, I banned him. Too much BS. Too much shit0talking to other posters.
The reason I closed the blogspot account was because I didn’t have the ability to ban folks. Now I do.

  46. unca chuckNo Gravatar says:

NoFear, why is it that you seem to be the only one who has issues with what I post? Most others here (and elsewhere) see things as they are, and maybe have a different take. You have to spin all your posts with some sort of slant. You exxagerate my positions and then call me out for them.
    Howe about you grow up?

  47. unca chuckNo Gravatar says:

BTW, Gore to get ‘limited’ action this weekend in Philly.

  48. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Ah… another day in the Blogosphere. Now, let’s see, my asbestos suit is here, somewhere…
*Hunkers down with a cold one and waits for the inevitable firestorm*

  49. unca chuckNo Gravatar says:

Don’t hurt yourself, skippy. Hate you hear you blew out your frontal lobe.
A mountain of bullshit? Where? I posted that VD was a little too high on himself, amid the drops and the fumbles. I provided some stats to back me up. What was your take? Opinions and BS. You say I called VD a bust. My take on it (3 YEARS AGO) was that he was heading down a path to nowhere based on his own delusions of grandeur. He was late to practice one day due to his waiting for his 15′ painting of himself to be delivered to his house. Sing got his head right. The hotdogging was curtailed hugely. He’s improved, but he still drops too many passes.
Skeebs often disagrees with me. I get no vitriol from him. Berger (politics aside) and I disagree and don’t go all aflame. Why you, home-skillet?

  50. unca chuckNo Gravatar says:

    And . . . tied for 3rd in dropped passes in 2011 is . . .
    wait for it
    Vernon Davis!
The funny thing is, no ne agrees with me on a lot of things, yet I’m plagarizing.
    Hmmmmmmmmm. I guess it’s opposite day in blogland . . .

  51. unca chuckNo Gravatar says:

Wow, you got the excuse machine churning like a mofo, sport. Let’s see, the ref shouldn’t have called it, and Sing should have rolled over like Nolan did for VD? Right.
His drop rate this year is a small sample size anyway, skippy. Don’t get all torqued. But drops are something that has plagued VD his entire career. Need a scorecard? Look it up.
VD himself lauded Singletary for setting him straight the day he threw him out.
“I didn’t really understand what Coach was saying that day but I figured it out later on,” Davis said. “I was angry at the time, and what happened definitely didn’t sit well. The thing is that I always knew I wanted to be the best. I just didn’t know how to make that happen.”
“Vernon went from being a player who guys didn’t know how to deal with — and didn’t really want to be around — to being a player they respect and admire,” Singletary said. “I’ve never seen a turnaround happen as fast as this one.”
Since Sing never did anything right, I suppose he’s wrong about VD, right? And VD shouldn’t be believed? Gotcha.
See, unlike you, I work with facts, not hyperbole.

  52. unca chuckNo Gravatar says:

    Men either, skippy.

  53. unca chuckNo Gravatar says:

  54. unca chuckNo Gravatar says:

When all else fails, NoFear goes the “I-know-you-are-but-what-am-I” route. Welcome to 3rd grade, Peewee.
You need to unwad yourself there, skippy . . . Yer wound a little too tight.
Hey, Skeebs. Time for a new thread?
