Bring Your Gum Wads

The Chicago Bears come to town this weekend, fresh from clinching the NFC North division. They would be more tempted to mail this game in if not for the falling fortunes of the Rams which have suddenly made the last playoff BYE slot possibly available for them to seize.

If the Rams lose at Arizona or at home against the 49ers and the Bears win their final two games, it would shove the Rams into the Wild Card round and Chicago would have a week off before a home game in the Divisional round.

Is that enough incentive to bring out the ferocity in the Bears? Who knows. Maybe DC Vic Fangio can get his boys fired up just to stick it to Jed York, the clown who picked Jim Tomsula as HC in 2015 instead of the far more qualified Fangio. But Fangio was not an ass licker like Tomsula. And ass licking was at the very top of York’s list of HC necessities.

The Bears have a top five defense and a top ten offense. The 49ers have a low twenties offense and defense. Game over, one might think, but the Niners are currently riding the Nick Mullens Magical Mystery Bus and they might not conform to statistical expectations.

Strangely enough, the 49ers have fared better with the guys who they didn’t think were good enough to start than they did with the guys they did think should start. The defense, in particular, as improved dramatically since the injuries to starters Adrian Colbert, Jacquiski Tartt, Jimmie Ward, and K’waun Williams. And kicking Reuben Foster to the curb. The rash of injuries this year hasn’t hurt the team, it’s made the team better.

This backassward approach to success holds true to some extent with the 49er  draft picks. The team has gotten better results from their third day picks than they have from their day one and day two picks. I’m not sure if this is a trademarkable technique, but will research the matter.

Looks like the Browns flummoxed the Patriots by unloading Josh Gordon while he still had value.

  2. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Gordon has talent but was a huge problem child.

Just like the Raiduhs got taken with Matavius Bryant.
Typical Mark Davis trading a 3rd round pick for a guy that’s been suspended 2 out of the last 3 year.

If someone is trying to unload a player, the buyer better beware.

It took awhile but it looks like our last years draft was a pretty good one.

Will the real Bears show up Sunday. Here are their Pro Bowlers and alternates from their 3-4 D.

An LDE, all 4 LB’s, a S and a CB. How do our OT’s stack up across Mack and Floyd. Fangio coached up rookie Roquan Smith to all-star honors.

With us, Fangio also coached the LB’S as well as DC. Think he knows something about stack LB’s and OLB’s. Assimilated Mack from 4-3 to 3-4 in a matter of games, not years.

At least we play them in Santa Clara, not in the Bear’s Den of Soldier Field.

  5. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Speaking of the Bear Den, here is a drive into the oil field of that name out here in the Bakken, ND’s oil patch.

Last week Solomon Thomas enticed 4 holding calls on guys he was facing which is a huge number reserved for the Macks or the Watts of the league.
Perhaps Thomas will turn into a player like Justin Smith who was an enabler occupying double teams from the opponents and allowing Aldon Smith easier paths to the QB and sacks.
Still think Thomas has more potential than Armstead and I’m reluctant to give Armstead a long terms big contract because Buckner will get the big contract next year.

The 49ers are playing a LOT more man defense in the secondary. They simplified things and now you don’t see RBs/WRs/TEs running free for 15 yards before contact.

  8. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Pettis is starting to show his talent unlike his teammate at UW John Ross who was a first round pick in the previous draft by the Bungles

Some are too eager to label draft picks “busts”. I think you need to give them 2 years to show their stuff and see if injury is keeping them off the field.

Look at Kittle and suddenly he’s going to the Pro Bowl in his second year and some compare him to Travis Kelce.

  9. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

Chuck likes to make fun of everyone trying to hide by posting under lame-ass alter-ego names. Do you think he’s making fun of himself over in the barnyard for Charlie Krueger?

My money’s on the “no, he’s just a hypocrite under any lame-ass name” choice.

  10. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

Hmmm, NoFear, am I making fun of anyone? No. it’s just Mr Kettle calling everyone else black. Oh, sorry snowflake. Colored. Take a knee.

  11. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

Beats you posting under 55 different names on my blog, NoFear.

Saleh was going to be fired till he simplified things. Somewhere around the Green Bay game, halftime maybe, he went to much more man coverage, and it worked until GB picked up our pass rush. Still no excuse for losing to the Giants and AZ. But that’s on all the turnovers.

Even still, there has been incremental improvement with the defense lately.

  13. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

That is why Fangio preferred experienced CB’s that can handle pattern matching. Bunch WR formations screw up our rookie CB’s.

  14. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Bears edge rush will force BDN to step up in pocket. IOL will be under the microscope this Sunday.

  15. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

KS play design and play calling showcases the strengths of BDN.

Is BDN worth a day 2 pick. Here is Madrid later in article.

It’s still unclear how the league’s quarterback needy teams view the former practice squad turned starter but it’s safe to assume that some teams will come calling in the offseason offering to trade for the quarterback. One way he can up his value is throwing with a little more anticipation and taking chances to hit tight coverage throws.

  16. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Talk about bad luck. Raider’s chose before 1st game to make Mack trade with CHI instead of us. Fangio then masterminds a D with 7 Pro Bowler’s and Jimmy G IR’s in late September.

OAK got a lot less draft capital, SF at top of 2019 draft and CHI near bottom of each round.

    Gotta hurt.

  17. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Listen to any and all offers on Armstead, Thomas, Garnett, Mullens, and Jimmy G. Sometimes there is an offer that cannot be refused.

  18. bullitNo Gravatar says:

I am curious what you think is good value for the guys you listed.

What do expect in return? As I said previously Jimmy G’s trade value is at a low since he’s injured.

  19. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

    49ers inactives

    DT Earl Mitchell
    RB Alfred Morris
    OL Erik Magnuson
    OL Shon Coleman
    DL Sheldon Day
    S Tyree Robinson
    S Jaquiski Tartt (IR)

  20. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Trubisky had only 4 incompletions all day. 25/29. And that’s your game.

  21. winderNo Gravatar says:

Their defense just beat us up today. Old time 49er/ Bear game.

  22. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Bullit, am looking for 2nd for Thomas (to 3-4 D as strong side OLB) and a 2nd for Mullens. Especially added to a trade with our 3rd to grab a 2019 Billy Price or a top Stack LB Will at #19 to #25. These are non-edge but critical pieces that dropped down in the draft.

Is Garnett a fit for OZ and better in pass pro than Person. I suspect he stays with us and competes for LG or RG, his potential greater than trade value.

Mullens has proven to be better than a backup with brains and QB 101 nailed. Can we bundle our 3rd and Thomas to GB for their 1st. Or our 3rd plus Mullens for WASH 1st?

Can we get the equivalent of two 1st’s that are top 15 for Jimmy, a franchise QB.

Mullens may look better because of KS playcalling and OZ success to sell the play action. Would DEN or WASH take our 3rd plus Mullens for their 1st. Would JAX take our 2nd plus Mullens for their 1st. Try it and see if they bite.

  23. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Dunno, maybe with Armstead is to give him a contract. If we draft Quinnen Williams then would shop him RDE in a 3-4 or big DE in a 4-3 for a 3rd or better?

A lot of $$ for the DL then but would hate to give him away. He has been A+ healthy this year.Give him a tradeable contract and keep him pending the draft.

  24. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Mullens had the brain fart at the end where he made a dumb decision.

Wishful thinking that anyone would give a 2nd round pick for him.
He has a lot to learn still.

Mullens is fine where he is as insurance in case Jimmy G is slow coming back from injury.

With Mullens you play the long game and keep him until contract time approaches.

  25. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

If we cannot do any other trade ups my aim is edge1 at top of 1st and edge2 at bottom of 1st with our 2nd and 4th. Edge1 would be all downs. Edge2 maybe SAM or big DE in base and the other edge in nickel.

If we miss out on Bosa or Allen then Quinnen Williams as big DE in base and DT in nickel and dime.

Prefer not to pay the big bucks for a FA at edge.

  26. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Saleh has done enough in the last few games to survive as DC

If that’s the case they are still a 4-3 defense.

  27. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

What if Mike McCarthy gets HC/OC at DEN. Would he take our 3rd plus Mullens for their 1st? Their 2nd and 3rd for OL and the other 3rd for WR.

Elway looks at it as part of a package. Worth a try. Keenum and Mullens, one insures the other.

  28. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

In the clip below, Tomlinson follows his interior blocker way out west as Clark loops inside and becomes unblocked. After 2 to 3 shuffles outside, Tomlinson should be more aware of the stunt. There’s no reason an interior defender would be rushing the QB with that wide of a move. Mullens gets crushed.

In the next missed stunt, it’s more of the same. This time, Tomlinson latches onto his man and tracks him all the way near the opposite guard. Again, the defender loops under him and Richburg isn’t able to get in position to block the defender which leads to Mullens getting brought down.

Interior blocking will also be a key. Pressure cannot be allowed up the gut. While Mack getting around the edge several times is expected, limiting the inside pressure allows Mullens to escape out of the pocket for check downs and completions. If the guards and center are beat, there’s nowhere for Mullens to run and he’ll get sacked. The next few clips are examples of Richburg and Tomlinson getting beat in one on one football similar to what I described. If it’s on tape, Fangio has seen this too.

I’m not sure why Tomlinson sets up so far outside leaving a gap for him to be beat inside with a simple swim and go.

Richburg also needs a solid game. He will be up against two solid defenders that require good technique and form to keep in check. On this play he’s beat off the ball with a rip under move. Mullens tries sliding to the left, but Richburg is unable to keep his defender off of Mullens’ back.

The Rams are gonna lay down next week so that should be an easy win. Don’t know what that will do to the Draft order but it will probably knock us back down some.

  30. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Rams actually need to play for something next week Winder.

Rams (11-3): They’ve won the NFC West, but nothing more yet. They’ll secure a first-round bye and the No. 2 seed with a win over the 49ers or a Bears loss to the Vikings. If the Rams lose and the Bears win, the Rams will fall to the No. 3 seed.

  31. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

What I’m hoping for now is a Cowboys/Seahawks Wild Card game.
One and done for Jerruh would be SWEET. 😀

    New post is up.

  33. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Goody’s crew changed the broadcast times. Both games are now played at same time. So LAR cannot know ahead of time to trigger a tank and MIN-CHI should be close.

Will give Lynch another good look at our IOL, especially Tomlinson not handling stunts at all. That article had him even blocking out Staley.
