The 49er players are treating their loss to the Giants as some sort of team victory and a sign that their fortunes are on the way up. That illusion has a chance to be bolstered this weekend with an actual victory against the free falling Baltimore Ravens, a team also sporting a 1-4 record.
Quite plucky for a team that has lost four games in a row. It took former HC Jim Harbaugh nearly four years to experience anything worse that a two game losing streak. In fact, new HC Jim Tomsula has yet to experience even a two game winning streak.
A victory over the Ravens might fire the team up, which may or may not help them weather the distinct possibility that another four game losing streak is right around the corner. Which could extend to five, six, or even the entire rest of the season losing streak.
In order to beat the Ravens, however, Colin Kaepernick will have to have consecutive good performances, something he hasn’t done since probably the 2013 season. His ability to do that will depend entirely on whether the Ravens do or do not put consistent pressure on him.
And the Niner defense will have to continue its habit of playing well at home, versus lousy on the road. Perhaps it’s the home uniforms that embolden them to rise up and look competent.
There’s been talk this week of putting ILB NaVorro Bowman on a “pitch count.” On the surface, this talk is couched as a caring effort for the health of Bowman’s knee. In reality, Bowman is a major liability in the passing game. Opponents have completed 22 out of 23 passes when he has been targeted. This once great linebacker may never regain his former brilliance.
It’s mid-October and by now even the most ardent and/or delusional fans have figured out the 2015 49ers are a bad team. Many of us think they are badly coached, also. What does our idiot boy owner think? What record must Tomsula underwhelm us with to be given another chance next year? Is he coming back no matter what the team does? Is there no bottom to awfulness that Jed York would find unacceptable? York has certainly been quiet this year, unlike last year’s high visibility.
Hahahaha. Boy, Jed, were your boastful offseason remarks full of shit or what?! How close are we to the whole team throwing in the towel and tuning out Tomsula? Three more losses and the playoffs are out of reach. Six more and they’re in Mike Singletary territory. How low can they go?
Staley is under contract until 2018 and is the Niners best lineman.
Boone can walk after this season and likely will unless he get’s a huge deal around $7 mil a year. He has in his contract that The Niners can’t franchise him.
Trading Staley would be extremely stupid on Baalke’s part. That would give Boone too much leverage. Boone is a good OG but not the elite OT type his salary demands dictate.
Perhaps I’m wrong but I think Staley selling his house means he’s upgrading in this area and too much is being read into his leaving as the cause.
The Niners don’t have the quality type players that you could get a high round draft pick for.
Kap at best could bring you what the Niners received from KC for Alex Smith, two second round picks but his inconsistent play makes that questionable.
It has been mentioned before, would you trade Kaepernick straight up for Sam Bradford? Both of these QBs are 28 years old being born in the same month. The thought is Chip Kelly would covet Kap and overpay for him. Food for thought.
Joe Montana was on the Colin Cowherd Show yesterday and this is what he said when asked
Did the 49ers make a mistake letting go of Jim Harbaugh?
“I think so. Here’s a guy who been very successful for you quickly. He put a good team together. Now he’s gone and they’re struggling. Players are leaving. Players are leaving? Is that Harbaugh’s fault. I don’t think so.”
The greatest 49er just goes against the Pyongyang N.K. narrative
that Harbaugh drove players off the team. The narrative has proven to be a bunch of cackling gossip and made up BS and now
Jed and Baalke have gone off the grid much like the Pyongyang N.K. chapter barnyard.
Russell Wilson is playing behind a more leaky Oline than the Niners if that’s possible. He’s been sacked at a pace that translates to 70 sacks if it continues at the current pace.
This is what Wilson says that distinguishes his QB play from Kap
“You just trust, you go through your reads and if it’s not there, you just try to extend the play and make something positive out of it,” Wilson said. “Salvage the play, throw it away if you have to. If you can get positive yards, go ahead and take it. I think that’s the thing. I think my thing is I always try to keep my eyes downfield. I’m not trying to run. I just try to run away. For me, I think just keeping my eyes downfield and trying to find somebody.”
===
Emphasis is on keeping the eyes downfield. Once you drop your eyes you become an easier target for the defense and one dimensional.
Per Cam Inman
” 49ers defense lacking game-changing plays
The 49ers defense lacks game-changing plays so much it has yet to recover a fumble, the first time in team history that’s happened five games into a season ”
==
Good defenses force turnovers and pivotal takeaways. This current defense doesn’t ball hawk or force the issue which was a trademark of past defenses.
Biggest game of the weekend might be Michigan vs Michigan State.
This guy is keeping Barry Sanders Jr on the bench by having an amazing season. He’s the son of an Ex-Niner.

Look at screen shot 2. The picture is worth a thousand words.
See where all the Giant DBs are looking? They are watching Kap’s head and reading his eyes.
http://www.ninersnation.com/2015/10/16/9541927/colin-kaepernick-continues-to-struggle-against-the-giants
Stop talking money. We have lots of it the next 2 years. At the positions that demand big contracts we pay little except QB. There is so much wrong with this team, it needs to start with blowing up the coaching staff.
A QB that does not better the players around him. Mangini schemes overwhelm young players. The DB approach of developing low rounders does not have the talent to execute it.
CK is not improving. Some is on the CS. CK lacks football IQ. Lacks everywhere and current coaches cannot improve it. Just look at Derek Carr.
Conservative approach is parcell’s beef up D and oline. Do run well to set up a passing game. With a garbage franchise qb. If TB stays then that happens.
My approach. New CS that knows O. Trade CK. High 2016 draft picks QB, WR1. If Oline stays bad then next 2 picks there. If Staley can get a 2nd, DO IT. Boone moves over, we have lots of money.
This is a rebuild. D had the high picks. Reid, Ward, Armstead, Tank, Lemonier, Borland, Tartt, and Harold. Got a blue chipper in Lynch. ENOUGH!!!!
Lots of FA dollars for young D improvements. Fix that O.
OK, I have my Bonehead Play of the Year: Forget braindead QB INTs. Forget CB flops when they’re beaten for a bomb. Forget those whiffed blocks or missed tackles.
On a shotgun snap last night, the Falcon C hiked the ball INTO HIS OWN THIGH! That’s not the bonehead part, though. He turned and began pass blocking AS IF NOTHING HAD HAPPENED!!
There’s no way to adequately describe the hilarity of the play. In the pantheon of bonehead plays, this pales in comparison to Mark Sanchez’ Butt Fumble. Sanchez was the QB; he had star value. A fumble by the C will always fly under the radar. But this one absolutely deserves a mention.
Falcons self destructed with 4 inexcusable fumbles and a blocked punt for a TD.
You can’t overcome shooting your foot off like that.
More kissing for CK:
http://www.csnbayarea.com/49ers/cosell-against-giants-49ers-didnt-ask-kap-read-coverage
McCaffrey of Stanford is the real deal, though only a soph. His dad won three SB Rings; his granddad was a U.S. Olympic silver medalist runner. If he stays healthy, he’s gonna be a good ‘un.
Two RBs fighting off injuries face decent run Ds and two QBs not having their best years face bottom of the barrel pass Ds.
Boldin playing against his old team and Niners D at home might just indicate we have a chance at not looking pathetic. On second thought, naw, we’ll probably find a way to look pathetic.
No point in predicting the score for these two struggling teams. I’ll go with the betting line. Ravens will cover. They lose a lot, too, (1-4?) but not in such a pathetic fashion.
So who’s #1. That will be ours thanks to CK. How does Connor Cook run a pro offense against maybe the best college D. Goff looked bad against Utah.
Shall we play like gook, for Connor Cook? No shame if Wolverine’s D gets the better of him. Pocket passers have to make quick correct decisions, anticipate throws, and read D pre- and post-snap. Is he the one?
Always worth a chuckle:

Doing 90 while drunk and arguing with your girlfriend, thy name is Johnny Football. Too bad, I was rooting for the guy but, even less than Aldon, there are no more chances.
Just for fun

Somebody’s going to do this at Levi’s and Jed will freak out.
Jed will call in his imperial storm troopers to protect him.
WR’s Steve Smith and Chris Givens are questionable on Friday injury report so both play? Give the edge to Flacco with good oline both run and pass. 49-38 Ravens, revenge of the Harbaughs.
RTFirefly: 23-17 Niners
Spitblood: 42-20 Ravens. John Harbaugh is going to do everything in his power to stick it to Jed York next Sunday. A win for the Ravens is a big, big win the for the Harbaugh family. John and his mother and father watched quietly last year as York and the NFL Network smeared Harbaugh. All of them want some retribution.
Ravens’ players are gonna have John Harbaugh’s back. 42-20, Ravens.
Phil Fan: 27-24 Ravens at Levis. In a burst of prognostication brilliance I predict the exact score. Kap throws 3 TDs and 3 pick sixes.
NJ49er: 24-20 Niners. Phil I’m going out on a limb this week.
24-20 SF
Bakkentom: 49-38 Ravens. WR’s Steve Smith and Chris Givens are questionable on Friday injury report so both play? Give the edge to Flacco with good oline both run and pass. 49-38 Ravens, revenge of the Harbaughs.
Spread ranges from +6 (RT) and + 4 Niners (NJ) to -3 (phil), -9 (Bakkentom), and -22 (Spitblood). Still time to submit yer hunches as Niners gird for a kinda Battle of the Bros. How the Giants have fallen. Should be a good game tho.
Oh and I think 27-20 UM over Michigan State as the Jimis run out to 6-1.
RT – It’s not like that regarding Manziel. It’s really not. It’s not like there are “no more chances.” Alcoholism is a disease. It’s not a moral failing. Read that again. It’s not a moral failing. That’s the most important thing that people on these blogs don’t realize. It’s not a moral failing inside someone if they’re an alcoholic.
Look at Aldon Smith. Aldon Smith left the 49ers after Colin Kaepernick dated his girlfriend and Smith couldn’t handle the turmoil and whirlwind of emotions that go with a teammate who’s also the star qb taking his girl. Aldon suffered from a lack of connection with his girl and team, and there was no longer a place for him in SF. That’s not his fault. How he reacted was getting drunk and wrecking his car, which is fault, but understanding the why is important. The disease is about connectivity and not criminalizing the alcoholic’s behavior. Connectivity is about support, friendship and living a healthy life.
Manziel and Aldon will be given chance after chance in the NFL with different teams, and eventually, if they don’t kill anyone, they’ll find a way to be good teammates. Manziel and Aldon are a little different, though, in that Aldon has real talent and Manziel’s talent at the NFL level is questionable.
Either way, I bet in the next five years, NFL teams start looking at alcoholism differently and start working with different sets of rules for different players. I know this’ll make NoFear and Bullit’s heads explode, but they both have enough blue hair to re-cover Boise Stadium.
Spit do you have a link for the “Kap dated Aldons GF”?
Spitblood, you’re full of shit.
The Marxist liberal wacko ALWAYS sympathizes with the perpetrator over the victim. That’s a mental disease in itself, though probably someone else’s fault, surely not yours.
You identify with alcoholics. And because you do you refuse to see anything wrong with any damn thing they end up doing. Personal responsibility is a concept you don’t recognize.
Forget whether being afflicted with the disease is anyone’s fault. There is always (usually) a trail of bad decisions leading up to the incident that results in someone else getting injured, damaged, paying a price for the actions of the drunk.
I guess we need a new Chuck to start shit though. FU!
NoFear – I don’t mean to offend you when I write this, but when you die, the old guard dies with you and that’ll be a great thing for addicts. Your way of thinking regarding addiction is all wrong. You actually hurt addicts – because you don’t understand.
Your response to addiction is a classic, low-level of critical thinking response. If you don’t understand something, you want to ban it or criminalize it. If you don’t understand something you become worried or it creates anxiety inside of you and you want to lash out at it. And I know you don’t understand addiction because of your comments now and you in the past have offered that you understand addiction because you knew an addict once.
When I write that when the old guard dies that’ll be a good thing, I’m referring to how you want to criminalize addiction. You’re the red-blooded, meat and potatoes American who doesn’t want to recognize that other countries in other parts of the world are actually advancing all sorts of different aspects of the human experience for the better – all over the world with America lagging in so many areas now. Some counties, unlike America, actually go out and try different things. I know. I know. It’s a novel concept. But here in America we are stagnated by the old guard, such as yourself, and it’s okay because you’re time is up , shortly (relative).
With addiction, personal responsibility is most of the time in direct conflict with healing. It’s the sad truth. But the addict, in most cases, needs to re-learn his or her life while also continuing to sharpen or at least maintain his or her job skills. It’s a tough juggling act because like you write, “There’s always (usually) a trail of bad decisions leading up to ……someone else getting injured.” And this is the cruxt of the addiction dilemma. Hurting other people no matter how minor or life threatening actually creates guilt inside the addict that drives them to more self-destructive behavior. The very first thing that I learned regarding addiction is that you judging the addict only makes it worse. The addict is actually more hard in him or herself than you could ever be. It’s the response that’s important.
If you had a friend, No Fear (highly unlikely) and he somehow hurt you through his disease (alcoholism), and he knew you as a cantankerous, crabby old judgmental man with a short fuse, he probably wouldn’t expect forgiveness or and kind of trust from you later down the road. But it’s all in your response. If you were to say to him (or her, but highly doubtful it’s a female), “I don’t believe this outcome was something you wanted but it’s something that happened because of your disease and I forgive you. I won’t be putting myself in a position to be hurt by you in the near future, but I’m sympathetic and cautiously supportive,” you’d actually do that addict a world of good. One of the things that actually perpetuates alcoholism is the old guard mentality of blaming the alcoholic and not seeing his or her actions as a disease but instead labeling them, as you do, a moral failing. You want to criminalize because you see that there’s a chance they can hurt you. But what you don’t see is that you can be hurt daily, with simple acts such as riding your bike down the street. Society is not and never will be devoid of risk, and frankly, if you take the risk out of society I’m cashing in my chips and moving on. Who needs the boredom? But I digress.
One of the best parts of life is risk. And even sweeter is the risk of a person in need who can hurt you and you and your family still open the door and cautiously let them in.
It’s my contention, and I’m certainly in the minority on this, but I believe the minute the society around addiction changes it’s reaction towards addiction, that’s the minute addiction will be cured. I believe that because generally speaking addiction is a family disease, passed on from father to son, mother to daughter. The heart of addiction is in the neglect of a child. The child see an addict as a father. That’s his role model. Then the father neglects the child because the father’s priority is his addiction, and ultimately the child follows the father’s footsteps. The lack of direct focused attention the father can’t give is the source of addiction. But if we can educate, we can break that chain and it’s starts with society not viewing addicts as criminals – as you do.
And all this, I’m sure, won’t change your mind or your opinion, but that’s why I started this post out with my comments regarding the old guard dying off. Think of it this way, No Fear – Long after you and I are gone, society will advance itself and its beliefs, thoughts, policies, etc., in ways that far surpass our ways of thinking today – and that certainly will apply to addiction. How we handle addiction today isn’t how we’ll handle it in 100 years. We can all certainly try to evolve our own states of awareness even now with that thought in mind.
Spitblood, you’re an idiot and a liar. You make arguments in the mold of your pal Chuck. You make up a bunch of shit and ascribe it to me to make your straw man argument.
Judge people? Yes, I judge people all day every day and so do you if you have any sense or anyone to protect. Looks like you’ve judged me in your diatribe, albeit in your false bullshit way, but of course you’re a hypocrite, too.
You liberal nutcases started this “don’t judge” bullshit to absolve everyone of anything. It’s BULLSHIT in the real world like so much of your dogma. You are what you do, not what you say you can do.
FYI, I have dozens of friends and family members who struggle with addiction. I’ve lost more than a few, close ones, to it. You think you have some corner on insight into everything by witnessing or even reading about the slightest circumstance. You think no one but you has suffered through the worst of the disease? It’s been around a long time, pal. You’re not the first or brightest bulb to puke out some hare-brained opinion that is “the” way to go. To even think so, takes an imbecile.
I’m sure you think folks who have a history of mental problems shouldn’t be “allowed” to own a firearm. Why? “Not their fault.”
Hmmm, interesting. On another site I now frequent there is this disagreement writ large = will the current political configuration endure past 11/’16 or will it be severely,uh, trumped?
It’s a messy contest and reflects what we see here. God Bless America!
Not sure if Bullit posted the link to a velly interesting article re: Montana on Kap + “Let Kap out of the pocket”, it’s not working to convert him to pocket passer:
Joe Montana thinks 49ers should let Colin Kaepernick flee pocket
http://blogs.mercurynews.com/49ers/2015/10/16/joe-montana-thinks-49ers-should-let-colin-kaepernick-flee-pocket/
Phil
Didn’t post what Montana said about Kap because it is discouraging. Basically Joe is saying Kap is limited and you’ll never make him a pocket passer.
If you wait until Thurs when we play the Seahags they have a plan to flush him into rolling in a certain direction and then deploy the secondary to blanket that side of the field which allows their defense to only concern themselves with one half of the field.
It is very frustrating to have a talented QB that doesn’t accept coaching. How many fifth year QBs with talent that can’t look off defenders and needs to stare down a receiver to hit him? Look at the film and you’ll see the DBs watching the QBs head and reacting to where he’s looking.
Kap seems to have a hard time breaking bad habits and it is stunting his growth.
Stephen Ross , the owners of the Fins is a Michigan Man.
He’s the honorary captain for the Wolverines today and is on ESPN Gameday.
In the future if Harbaugh ever wanted back in the NFL that might be where he ends up.
Best sign at ESPN College Gameday at Ann Arbor.
“Thank You Jed York”.
Again, NoFear. You cite “friends and family members” but you have no insights of your own about the disease to offer. You literally have not offered one insight about how to cure the disease. Not one. You’ve attacked. You’ve insulted. But you haven’t offered one insight regarding how to help cure the disease of alcoholism. And the reason why you haven’t is because you don’t know anything about it. I don’t mind arguing or debating with you about alcoholism because others reading me might change their tune or learn to respond to a drunk differently, but I know you won’t change your tune. Like I wrote before… “When the old guard dies…”
CK theories about his ability to find and hit targets.
One is spatial awareness. Example is driving instruction in high school. Instructor recognized this with a girl in the car and immediately pulled her out of our first time behind the wheel.
Other is not able to track a target in a congestion of close moving players. His “tracking” ability not quick enough.
Lumped together is lack of mental aptitude. Both problems not a factor for a pitcher. He chose the wrong sport.
Does not accept coaching? He would if he could. Why did we hang on to him. If his ability was properly recognized, his trade value would be high. Now everyone knows he is not nfl capable with trade value of a ham sandwich. A trade back to college? Yeah, in dreamland.
Also ability to remember structure of pass play where all targets are and for the given D when and where they are open. Study and repetition handles this. As well as simplifying a playbook.
His brain prevents him from mastering QB in the NFL. Did Jed or TB force this on the coaches?
KICK Kap is Coach killer.
31-6 Ravens
spit- Alcohol & drugs when used sparingly can be really enjoyable. But, there is a line and once that is crossed it’s a whole new ballgame. No matter what brought someone to that point really doesn’t matter except to the few people(enablers, family, and victims)of that person. The havoc and damage they cause to everyone around is usually great and they have to be accountable for their actions. That’s one reason San Quentin is full of drunk drivers.
Sleeper QB to watch is Paxton Lynch of Memphis.
Ole Miss had a 14-0 lead and Lynch has thrown 3 TDs to score 31 unanswered points.
Memphis is upsetting #13 Oled Miss 31-14.
Ole Miss coming back , now 31-28 start of 4th.
Memphis D looks like Niner D against Giants. Passing game is shredding them.
The results will tell you that this player friendly approach
that Tomsula has employed has made his team a lazy team.
Cutting the meetings to 30 mins so players can take breaks to look at their phones has created a team lacking focus and discipline.
Unless Tomsula doesn’t think what they’re doing is work, the players should leave their phones in their lockers because they are at work. They are there to learn a gameplan and to study film, not to text their buddies or girlfriends.
The difference between this year and last was under Harbaugh there was structure and you knew the practices were going to be long and hard but it got results.
This year’s results are a reflection of the lax attitude and has translated to the field.
Since when has hard work and preparation been a bad thing.
The culture of the Niners has turned into poor preparation
and a lazy culture.
Jed has ruined the niner cred with ability to attract quality coaches. In recent years they had the best OC types. I believe the one guy ??? Cameron??? came from Miami.
Now they have Marc Trestman. Somehow he didn’t do well enough with the Bears.
OC and DC advantage to Ravens. O is hurt if Justin Forsett and/or Steve Smith not in game.
Michigan’s Aussie punter rugby kicks it 80 yards without any return possible. Now that’s a guy I’d spend a draft pick on.
Winder – If you do the crime, you do the time. That’s obvious. That’s not what’s being argued here.
4 AM great time to watch UM Jimis do their thing. “Thank you Jed York” lol
Nothing will cure a drunk if he doesn’t want to change. Failing that willingness it will not happen.
7-0 Harbs. The difference was that punt. The Spartans drove 70 yards on a beautiful drive but it petered out without points. The Wolverines returned the 70 yard favor but with the advantageous field position it netted 7. Draft that punter!
I’d forgotten that Michigan’s theme song, “The Victors” was used by my own Archbishop Mitty Monarchs.
The Jimis using their FB and TEs to move ball. Hey I seen that before
That’s not the case with many addicts, Phil, or else there would be no such medical term as “addiction”. It would be “choice”.
For those many, treatment can be very successful, but I personally from my experiences believe the “disease” concept is counter-productive, as is A.A.’s heavy reliance on “God”.
I’ll debate this in the future at some point, not today.
Switching to my Jimi H avatar just because
Yeah we got more important stuff here = Go Wolverines!
Hold that draft pick RT = short punt
Michigan player hit it at the 32 yd. mark. Lopped 11 yards off the punt. It would have gone even farther if that idiot hadn’t hit it.
Yeah now #35 gets tossed on a weak call….7-7
Good tough game so far between two very good teams. Early on it’s looking like a rough day for defenses – the better one may easily decide this one.
Bears just IR’d Ego Ferguson 3-4 DE. Jeremiah Ratliff probably the replacement.
Bears and Lions suck right now. Unfortunately we played great O teams before the bye. Bears and Lions are playing some rookies that no doubt will be better when they face us.
Lion’s oline terrible now and their 1st Rd rookie guard learning each week. Other guard is coming back from injury.
Bears D needs 2nd Rd NT Eddie Goldman to improve each week. Still learning the 3-4 and finding the right players.
Browns have a very good roster. Brain farted with the Manziel pick so their game manager McCown should be enough against us.
We lose tomorrow and #1 should be ours.
To plan for future if FO smart, trade Staley and CK now. Denver needs an LT bad so their 2nd is doable. Whether CK or Blaine we lose all games after tomorrow.
Got a typhoon blowing out here too. Want some rain?
RT drunk never gets his disease treated if he doesn’t choose to show up at the docs office. See? Choice lol
Yeah good ds here. Guess Jimi took Niner D w/ him. SACK! But Connor Cook is very polished
Phil, we had the high temp go from 80 to 50 between Thurs. and Fri. You get any of those? That’s a typical Front Range of the Rockies signal that the seasons are changing. Weather: “The season’s changed. Ha ha ha.” Me: “But it was summer yesterday.” Weather: “Yeah, but it’s autumn now, and snow is on the way. Ha ha ha.”
Harbaugh is wearing glasses!? Perfesser Jimi
No never drops below 70. 2 seasons = wet and dry.
If El Nino happens as forecast, huge rain from SF/SD to New Mexico and Texas from Jan to March.
That won’t be rain here. That’s snowplow time for the driveway and snow shovel time for the front walk. The blizzards here in the plains are no joke, and in the mountains you can find yourself buried overnight.
Snow? What’s that? Hope you guys break outta your drought
We’ve had a good year on that front, unlike back home. The snow doesn’t get very deep here, and it doesn’t last all that long. Unlike the mountains where I lived when I first came out here. Once you get a good snow you can forget about seeing the ground till about March.
Jimi playing typical smash mouth + good D football. Well it wins a bunch of games
Mich St. 145 yards, Mich 95 (!) offense. Now that’s efficiency. Most of that was on those two big drives, one by each team.
Coaching difference: Michigan punts with 4th and half an inch. Mich. St. goes for 4th and 10. Misses by a yard. Michigan in the driver’s seat now.
Score already…State good goal line D
17-7 Wolverines. Sweet
17-7 and Michigan has only 147 yards O with no turnovers by either team.
Michigan St. is getting Harbaughed.
Harbaughed lol. Yeah they sure are
I called 27-20 UM. Now 17-14, let’s see
20-14. It’s nailbiter. The Spartans scored quickly last time they had the ball, let’s see how the Mich. D responds.
Wow, what a bozo play by #69. Your teammates force a loss on third down, so after the whistle jump onto the pile (you’re not in) and get a PF. Instead of fourth down, yardage and a first. Idjut.
Yup dumb. Close but Harbs has ’em clinging to the lead
20-14 right. Trying to drink morning joe and type, it’s tough
Phil
You’re 20 hours from the start of the Niner game
This game might even be over by then.
Yep Bullit I’ll be ready, in shape, morning joe, game face, ok ready.
Now 23-20 mail biter for our boys da Jimis
El Nino is here. Thurs on the Grapevine above LA they had 3 inches of rain in an hour which triggered mudslides that buried Interstate 5 under 5 ft of mud in both directions.
They had to rescue people in cars by helicopter.
This was from a low pressure system that was remnants of a hurricane in Mexico.
Imagine if there are torrential rains due to El Nino the areas that were burned by wildfires will be hell.
23-21 w/ extra point. Good game. Hope tomorrow is too
23-21 Phil and Spartan ball with 7:15 left. It’s up to the D; I don’t expect miracle comebacks from this Michigan O.
I read about that Bullit. Giant traffic back up
Connor Cook of Mich St is the first QB the Wolverines have faced that hasn’t been a first year starter and often times a freshman.
Those shutouts were an anomaly.
Phil
I 5 was closed for 36 hours. Nobody saw this coming.
Do you remember early ’82 playoffs the Niners were on track and giant rains hit the Bay Area? Epic
The Berkeley hills got over 100 inches of rain that winter. I lived there and can attest to it; I walked the 3 miles to class at Cal – a lousy time to be carless.
I hope you guys get a big El Nino this winter…and a win today
Phil
It is doubtful the Niners will be playing beyond Jan 3 when the big rains will hit.
Michigan just won.
UM Jimis 6-1 = smoke that.
Yeah RT I was in Fairfax, Marin and it was flood city. The Stick was a swamp. All the rain I saw as an omen.
Damn blew that …ok 5-2
I never said draft that punter. I said shaft that punter.
That was the most ridiculous ending I’ve ever seen.
Crazy shit wow. Screwed by the punter? OMG
Guess what guys? Beware of Australian punters.
My team Texas lost to OK St because our Australian punter fumbled a perfectly good snap.
I’ve seen this movie before.
http://www.smh.com.au/sport/us-sports/australian-punter-michael-dickson-fumbles-snap-to-cost-texas-victory-20150927-gjvtja.html
It wasn’t the Super Bowl but similar crazy ending
Harbaugh was thinking, “If only I had Andy Lee…”
Is Cook 18-39 328 yds 1 td, ready for NFL? Is he #1 and ours.
The CBS post game show guys asked the question
“Did the Longhorn punter transfer to Michigan?”
Cook looked real good. Love to have him but we have a lot of work, I mean losing, to do first.
You like Texas Bullit?
bakkentom
Jared Goff has “IT” above his shoulders. His understanding of the game is similar to Andrew Luck. I would take him hands down over Cook.
I see Connor Cook and I see another #1 draft pick, Kerry Collins.
Right now I see Cook as a good QB and not a great QB.
Like I’m said the sleeper QB is Paxton Lynch from Memphis.
He is 6’7″ and actually mobile and is completing over 70% of his passes. Reminds me of Big Ben and Roman Gabriel standing tall in the pocket.
Long way to the draft but check him out.
Phil
I’m a Texas Ex, graduated in 1976. I was there when Texas had the Tyler Rose, Earl Campbell.
I bleed Burnt orange.
The Texas mascot Bevo 14 died this week of bovine leukemia.
Very happy 10 years ago when Vince Young and the Horns came back to beat Bu$h, Leinart, Petey’s U$C to win the National Championship. That was one of the greatest college football games ever played.
Nice Bullit and I see Memphis beat Ole Miss today too
Talking about addiction, it is hard for me to feel sorry for Lamar Odom.
The guy checks into a brothel and goes on a drug binge of cocaine and heroin and goes into a coma.
When he checks in, he pays $75K for his room and services.
Nope I have no sympathy for his behavior.
This is all on Lamar and he is stupid to piss away his money like this and put shit into his body.
Spitty’s psycho babble blaming his father is just Spitty trying to be Dr Joyce Brothers.
Bullit – And you know Lamar Odom is an addict how, exactly? Odom was on cocaine and sexual performance enhancers and it obviously was too much on the body, but that doesn’t mean he’s an addict like you tried to suggest. This is the first time I’ve heard of Odom being arrested.
And regarding the rest of you “OLD GUYS” and your thoughts on addiction… please tell me your credentials – the meetings you’ve gone to, the books you’ve read, the speakers you’ve listened to, the the classes you’ve taken and volunteer work you’ve done. But I know you guys haven’t done shit. I know all of you are shooting from the hip.
“I knew a drunk once” is basically your only qualification. It’s like the racist who claims to have grown up with a black best friend to keep from being called a racist. You guys really aren’t qualified. Unless I’m wrong? Tell me your qualifications. But I know you guys. You guys are a bunch of old blue hairs thinking you know about life when you really don’t have much experience with this particular issue.
We might want to change this blog name to “The Crotchy Old Guy Muse.” ~ Blue hairs and Reclusive Drivel ~
I looked it up. Odom has been arrested numerous times. You still can’t assume he’s an addict but if it walks like a duck. Still doesn’t change the fact that guys on this blog know nothing about addiction.
Spitty
And you just simply know nothing PERIOD.
Can I assume that all three QB’s are in this draft? If so sounds like 3 QB’s in the first 5 picks.
I feel better know. If one of these three are not picked by our GM then ….
Goff and Lynch are both Juniors and would have to declare after the season is over.
If they’re high first round picks they should opt for the NFL.
The Ohio State QBs are too much like Troy Smith.
” I know all of you are shooting from the hip. ”
You including me in that generalization? I’ve already said my piece about addiction right here. Will repost if you wish. I’ve got 20+ years personal, educational and professional experience in this area. Some of what you say is spot on. I emphasize taking personal responsibility, choosing to recover and then using/doing what works for each individual. Addictions are no excuse for people not to take full responsibility for their choices, their behavior. People must really really sincerely want to change/recover or it simply will not happen. I speak personally and professionally.
This discussion has another dimension = the personal/ideological conflict between some of you folks here which has nothing to do with the subject of ‘addictions’. Frankly I agree with most of what I’ve heard here on this subject but refuse to engage or credit the personal blather.
JMHO
This is a football blog.
When a player is a knucklehead and does something stupid
to keep him off the field and it hurts the team then he’s just a selfish dummy and subject to criticism.
It’s that simple. It’s about being a professional and personal choices made. If a player chooses to piss his career away and hurt the team he’ll get criticized.
In the scope of football only somebody like Aldon’s behavior is indefensible. He’s not trying to help himself.
This may have been a football blog in the past, but given the present and likely future state of the team under Jed York, it will need to broaden its horizons to survive.
RT – I definitely agree with that statement. All things Niners have a short shelf life as long as York is the owner.
Phil – No. I didn’t include you in the old guy statement. Bullit, NoFear and Winder (less Winder, though) try to pass themselves off as resident experts on addiction, but have no credentials. Bullit and NoFear can write endlessly about the subject without saying much more than, “Addicts should be jailed. I knew one once.” That’s the extent of their arguments. Few should listen.
spit – there are many schools of thought. I personally favor tough love. Get rid of all the enablers and most end up realizing what their fate actually looks like.
Now that Aldon is on topic, I believe FO was weighing whether to offer an extension or not. If Goodell let’s the latest transgression slide we still may not bid on him this offseason.
Depends on how pricey and any chance of a bidding war on him.
A global recession/depression and credit crisis may be coming up. Federal govt is printing money now. That may stop in a hurry. State govt are bordering bankruptcy now e.g. Illinois.
Addiction services, championed by liberals, may not be affordable when the sheet hits the fan.
Phil, here is your answer with lots of links:
Google aldon smith and nessa
Winder – Enablers truly are part of the problem, but enablers, while still very wrong and creating more problems, are closer to the cure than those who would vilify. I agree with you here.
Where I disagree with you is the area of tough love. Tough love works for people who aren’t addicts. If someone who’s not an addict is behaving like one and going down the wrong road, tough love works. I’m all for it there. But it doesn’t necessarily work for the addict because the addict needs rock bottom. Enablers (again although wrong) and social workers, friends and family members who are trained properly, can actually raise up the bottom in “rock bottom,” if that makes sense – helping the drunk to find help, solutions and sobriety without being in jail for life or damaging their own lives to a point where they can’t be functioning members of society after sobriety is found.
The addict who finds sobriety in jail after a life-long sentence is truly the biggest tragedy.
The problem with tough love for an addict is “they are going to hit rock bottom anyway” and in going the tough love route yourself you are saying you won’t help and want to distance yourself. Few friends or acquaintances go the tough love route and reverse themselves after, looking to help. And that’s fine, but turning your back does in fact create more psychological pain for the addict – and this is what I’ve been explaining to Bullit and NoFear for a while now. Guilt is heavy enough on the addict. Addicts have the weight of the world on them without people on the periphery adding more pain. But it’s natural. Society wants others to get in line and functioning members of society do that by shunning or ostracizing.
The better way to handle it is certainly not to enable, but also not to think tough love is going to change the outcome for the addict. It won’t. It’s best to clearly communicate your concerns with the drunk while also pointing out behaviors that are a result of alcoholism or addiction and not just their “blind dumb bad luck” like so many drunks offer.
Take Dennis for instance. Dennis will offer you a million sad stories about why his life sucks and if someone cared enough to tell him it sucks mostly because of the alcohol, he’d resent you for it (at first), deny it, then, particularly if his circle around him also changed their behavior and called Dennis on his alcoholism, it would expedite his fate to either death or sobriety – but more than likely it would be sobriety. But Dennis needs people who care enough to do that for him, and Dennis would offer that nobody cares. That’s the connectivity that Dennis needs to re-learn. This is why AA and even religion are so important after one finds sobriety because you can’t get sober all alone, without others. You need to reconnect, and it’s also tough to reconnect with people who used tough love – like yourself- early on.
I don’t preach tough love or enabling. It’s a fine line in between that works. When someone’s an addict, I think the best thing to do for them is to call them on their behavior without letting them get close enough to hurt you.
For instance… “I didn’t return your phone call last night because I was tired.” My response would be (even if it was assumption), “No, you didn’t return my phone call last night because you were drunk and ashamed of your disease.” That still says I care and that you aren’t fooling me. That’s not tough love or enabling.
But again, to do that you need to be educated and know the signs and assumption with addiction does work. If you aren’t educated or don’t care, you vilify like Bullit and NoFear, and that’s simply the wrong way to handle a drunk like Aldon, Manziel or even Odom (assuming they’re addicts).
Either way, if you care enough, there’s a fine line you need to learn to walk between enabling and tough love. As society gets better at walking that line, we’ll see fewer addicts.
spit- tough love does not mean turning your back on someone, it means just the opposite.
Winder – So if the addict continues to disappoint you, you stick with them? That’s not my definition of tough love.
Worse team in football? Not the Niners.
The Lions are 0-5 and are playing the Bears.
Much criticism is being piled on Matthew Stafford as he is being characterized as highly inaccurate with his throws. He has Megatron and Golden Tate as weapons yet has struggles.
If Detroit continues to lose they will be also looking to draft a QB and will be Niners main competition for the signal caller.
“First four games: Colin Kaepernick was under center for just 28 of 248 49ers offensive plays (including two kneeldowns). Vs. NYG: 39 of 64.”
When Kap is in shotgun, opponents can recognize where he’s throwing almost immediately. When he’s dropping back, they have to wait til he sets up.
Interestingly, Tomsula had just recently said the Niners were not a drop back team. Guess he forgot to confer with Chryst.
The 49ers might not be the worst team in the NFL, but they’re certainly the dumbest en route to the worst. Tomsula and Baalke came out over the off season and said, “We’re gonna run the ball,” and “We’re a running team.” This means they’ll pass off play action. But for the first two months of the season, they had Kaep in the gun and were trying to pass their way to victories with a lousy defense. Morons. In addition, the team only has one option at RB.
Grumpy has lead the charge that drafting and having only one good qb is a crime, but what about being a running team with only one good running back? Reggie Bush was never going to pound the rock. He was injured every week last year in Detroit. Hell, he’s injured now every week and he’s only a 3rd down specialist. Baalke got had there, too. So instead of finding a second running back to spell Hyde, the 49ers have no other options to run the ball along with one of the worst right sides of an offensive line in history. Anthony Davis retiring wasn’t Baalke’s fault, but pretty much everything else is.
Two years ago I was crying for the 49ers to draft two, maybe even three running backs. My two favorite backs two years ago were Devonta Freeman and Jeremy Hill. You pound the rock and play ball control when you have a lousy defense and hope the other team hands you a victory. Freeman and Hill? It ain’t called Geneoushire for nothing.
It seems the coaches have scrapped their entire offseason approach and are now trying to imitate the Fangio defense and the Roman offense.
Detroit beat Seattle in Seattle, don’t forget that. Just because they get no respect in the NFL and “officially” lost that wildcard game in Dallas last year, and that game in Seattle, doesn’t mean I actually believe they lost those games.
Nevertheless, the NFL considers them to have lost. They have the #1 overall as of now natch. The Niners have #6. We suffer from our SOS (Strength of Schedule) which is likely to continue all season. We’ll lose all ties when it comes draft time.
Bullit
Read some at http://www.prideofdetroit.Com
Oline is not good. Guards were injured. Larry Warford is coming back this week. Other one is not so their 1st Rd Lake Tomlinson is undergoing a baptism under fire. Also their long time center may have retired. Inside pocket collapsing and throws off back foot now?
New HC is the stiff, Jim Caldwell. Peyton was the defacto coach with Colts. Complaints about Lombardi OC. We face them at the end. Their IOL should firm up by then.
Stafford is for real, along with their WR/TE. Run game still garbage so that LG-C-RG drives the fortunes of that team.
On D they lost Suh, Fairley, Haloti Ngata injured, and DeAndre Levy MLB is IR’d.
Bullit, Stafford still in his twenties and franchise QB there till his body is broken. All 2016 picks go to oline and D.
He is their franchise QB with oline and OC suspect. If Bears have an easy schedule then Lions should have. Easy for them to pick off a few.
We have poor pass rush. ATL, CHI, DET, CIN, ARI have the pass O to beat us. CHI done it so far without Alshon Jeffrey who may be back this week but Trestman with Martellus Bennett, Marquess Wilson, and Forte itself is enough to beat us. CLE has a superior roster and adequate QB. SEA and STL D will crush us.
Inactives today

Lions are 0-5 and Stafford has been ineffective.
The Detroit media and fans are holding him accountable as they should. His career completion percentage is under 60%.
WR Steve Smith, RB Justin Forsett, and TE Crockett Gilmore active for today. WE LOSE.
Nail in the coffin. 2016 #1 is ours. Jed forced to get rid of HC/OC/DC. CK the gift that keeps on giving. Flacco has a good oline. Forsett multi-dimensional thanks to their previous OC. SEA couldn’t figure out how to use Forsett. BLUDGEON!!!!!!
Stafford only has 6 TD passes in 5 games on a team with a weak running game.
Stafford has spectacular games once in a while, but not enough to carry the team.
Stafford is having a good game today.
I guess that QB accountability business started sometime after Alex left the building.
Stafford has thrown 3 TDs so far today, and only one of them to a TE. With another to Tate just called back by a penalty.
Hodges is inactive again.
Why not make him active and play special teams?
He could spell Bowman in coverage situations.
AZ losing late to the Steelers, the Brownies with a real chance to knock off the Broncs with under 5:00 left… It’s a long season and a lot of weird stuff is bound to happen.
The worst play the Cards made was knocking Vick out of the game.
LOL, NF, I didn’t see the game but I just checked the stats.
PIT had no offense until the backup backup came in.
Game started. Where are all the fans?
Levi’s has a lot of empty seats.
One of the wildest finishes to regulation you will ever see:
Denver’s Sanders catches a long catch from Peyton that would’ve put them in FG range with no TOs and 8 seconds left. But…
Sanders kept running and scored a TD? Ruling on the field was catch and time expired with Sanders laying down injured in the EZ.
1) Did he catch the ball? Review said no – it was awfully close.
2) Was he touched by CB or was Sanders right to keep running and did he then score a TD? You couldn’t tell if he was touched from the replay.
3) Did he make the catch and go out of bounds? The replay showed he went out of bounds. This would’ve stopped the clock with Broncos in range for the winning FG. If… he made the catch, which in 1) the answer was no.
4) If he was touched, would the Broncos had time to get the FG team on the field? Probably not, maybe a Hail Mary (if Sanders wasn’t in the EZ).
None of this was clear watching the play in real time. I think everybody but Bronco fans was greatful that the review guys ruled on 1) as quickly as they did. Otherwise, they would’ve had to rule on 2) and 3) and oh boy what a mess.
NOTHING was obvious in real time.
Looks like Hyde is playing hurt.
He’s not running with his usual authority.
Miller needs to get into shape. He should’ve scored on that catch.
That’s the way play action should look.
Sweet bomb to T Smith beat C Wright. Nice
Cashed in w/ a FG off the Wilhoite INT. 4 possessions = 4 scores
Lynch on pass coverage deep = it worked but pass was a little long. WR heard footsteps?
For the Niners to be successful Kap has to play like this consistently.
Needs to keep it going and complete the game to win.
Yep consistency is what we need to see from CK7
OL gives up a sack to end drive
Ravens look like the team in disarray.
Niners need to find their killer instinct.
Yesterday I actually felt bad for JIMI at end of MSU win = first time I saw him looking stunned. But he was rallying the Ws later saying “gotta have steel in our spines”.
Damn Ozzie punter(s)
RT winning the pigskin prognostication contest so far. Niners looking a lot better but it’s the Ravens
I was winning last week too, Phil. Fat lot of good that did me.
Blasted Seahawks with the beautiful razzle dazzle for 7. Gawd I hate that team.
Maybe the football Gods dislike the Ravens more than the Niners. Sooner or later Smith will hold on to one of those. And Kappy’s lucky he didn’t get intercepted.
Wright is a very bad CB.What was Baalke thinking when he gave him almost $3 mil???
Ravens are not doing their DBs any favors by playing their safeties like LBs. Adjustments to raven’s D have to be made or this will be a blowout.
Nobody in the stands again. Fans at the game wit until the game strts to sit their butts down in their seats.
RT you win this week I’m sending you a Jed York autographed coconut AND an autographed Nerf football. Faith my friend, faith
Empty seats? Gee that’s surprising
Jeezus. I wish we’d gotten this version of Flacco in the SB.
Hyde shouldn’t be out there.
He just can’t put any pressure on his injured foot.
Pull him before he does some long term damage.
What happened to the Ravens?? We have Kap problems, do they have cap problems? GM, ownership problems, aging players? Shitty cheerleaders? Dunno
Flacco’s pass a duck and hard to figure out where he was going with it. That was fugly.
Yeah Skeebs these guys (Ravs) look punchless.
Puts Hayne in and M Davis, sit Hyde, he’s too important.
Just what I always wanted, Phil, a real live Filipino coconut! I suppose I could use sandpaper to remove the blemish.
You knew Smith would hang on to one of those. Luck’s been with us so far, as Kaepernick should have been picked twice and the Ravens have dropped two TDs. Hopefully this score doesn’t turn the mo.
Bye bye mo.
Pinion is averaging 33 yds a punt.
Baalke spent a 5th rd pick on this guy. Why????
$$
Chargers tie up The Pack in Green Bay. Sooner or later, one of these weirdnesses is going to stick.
“I suppose I could use sandpaper to remove the blemish.”
No problem the first prize includes one sheet of sandpaper
GO Chargers!
Great QB play by Kaepernick. TD to the general.
Wright still helping the Niners w poor D
Patton with first TD catch of career.
Shereese Wright is the gift that keeps on giving getting torched.
Just wish Patton wouldn’t celebrate by doing the Lambeau Leap. We’re not in Green Bay.
That’s the first time all season I’ve seen him stay in the pocket and look around until he found someone open, instead of just lowering his eyes and running.
Of course, it helps to have no pass rush against him all game.
15/26/323 2/0 127.6
Wow. Seattle about to lose to Panthers.
Last week he was only 23/35/262 2/0 107.1
Hang the bum.
Thought you gave up on him.
Never. I would’ve had no problem benching him for a bit. Anything to shake him up, to get over those couple horrid games.
Ravens holding penalty save Kap from another bone head play running out of bounds and stopping the clock.
Run on 3rd down? Creative
Coconuts, sandpaper and an auto graphed Nurf Ball fer you RT. Congratulations senor
There’s a first time for everything, Phil, so I’ve heard. That puts the Lambs in second, the Niners and Hawks tied for last, and the Vikings with Teddy Roosewater in the fast lane for the playoffs.
Good win.
Majority of the season wins 5 wins or more.
This is one of them.
Does not help in draft position.
Big week for Kap as he faces his nemesis, the Seahags.
Hyde looked like he was about 50% if that. In the second half he looked like he was really hurting.
That is going to be key in having a chance against the Seahags.
On post above it should read majority of the season win predictions was 5 wins or more. This is one of those.
Garbage no-future QB is killing the niners. Loved what Shuman said about CK. “all the hardware but no software” and a catch and throw bballer. Feast off bottom dwellers. Enjoy.
Next 5 years a perennial top 10 pick in the draft. Phuck the niners.
Bush better be ready and earn his paycheck this week.
Otherwise cut the bum.
bullit- I think we should dump all the dead weight and just go pick up some promising youngsters. Continue the rebuild throughout the season.
Philip Rivers now has thrown for 500 yards.
Two heart-breakers in a row for the Chargers.
Now down by 7 with under a minute to play, second and goal from the 2, Rivers has a guy wide, wide open in the right shallow corner of the EZ. The middle of the field is wide, wide open, he could’ve waltzed in. He throws over the head (to the right end zone, too, but deeper than the open guy!!) of a double teamed Gates instead.
Packers win. I saw Rivers made an idiot play exactly like that early in his career that cost them the playoffs in the last game of the season. He doesn’t have “it”. Never did.
Patriots vs Colts. Could get really ugly.
That one throw from Kappy to boldin was a thing of beauty. That is why I think highly of him.
I do think Niners could have used a regular week to prep for Seahags and heal.
Instead it’s 3 days and then game time. Both teams have to deal with it and the Seahags have to travel.
In the old days we’d at least split with the Seahags and maybe we’ll climb back tom that level.
Kap is actually wearing a suit and tie today at his post game presser.
He still has those stupid headphones.
Well I was wrong.
Shareece Wright DID help us this year after all.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch…
We beat a very weak, flawed team, that might end up getting their franchise QB courtesy of this win, in a game that we could not put away, and that came down to the last play.
It’s nice to see the team win, but without two big plays against our own cast off terrible CB, we might have lost this one, too.
We are just not a good team this year. We are a rebuilding team.
Hope you all feel good about this win. We probably lost the #1 pick with this win. Many years 2-14 is the worst team. With the toughest schedule we finish last in draft order with the tied teams.
CK saved his job with this win.
Always play to win, or stay home.
Jed/TB/JT/CK are poison. Lots of empty seats already. Even homers have given up.
How ’bout that Manusky D? Every time I want to compliment them they blow the next play, so I’ll wait one or two but this doesn’t look like the blow out so many were sure of seeing. Go Frank.
Phil I almost nailed the final 😀
Actually think a consolation coconut should be shipped to NJ for being 1pt off the final.
Just don’t have Jed sign it, a toilet paper scarf might be more appropriate 😀
I’ll take the WIN.
Joe Flacco: “We had a lot of room out there to make plays and I felt we should have had 600 yards. We should have put up a lot of points”
Both teams could say that. I think the big difference was we made the two INTs, they dropped ’em. It was 16-3 at one point in the 2nd Q.
Mangini is sitting in Zone Coverage too.
He’s keeping everything in front and, risking the pressure.
Would like to see him gamble a little more with Russell on Thursday.
He’s shown some signs of the LeBeau tactics earlier in the year.
Walking guys up and back but, I think it’s a combination of confusion for the opposing Offense, and ourselves.
Work in progress….
Any thoughts on the cheap shot Ian Williams took today?
Might have been OG Yanda?
If you can fine a RB for leading with the crown of the helmet, does it apply to the OL?
Yep NJ you and RT split the top prize with your 4 point Niners and his 6 point Niner win. I will send you a special coconut sans autograph as we indeed have two winners today. Lazy me I didn’t check my records and once again try to award an incorrect result. This is why Spit grumbles about the wretched quality of the judging in the Pigskin Prognostication Contest. I will try to do better vs the SEA people but can we expect the Niners to?
No worries Phil, I appreciate your intentions and, I’ll also enjoy a long awaited return to the WIN column.
We’ll need to dial up more pressure than we’ve shown in recent weeks to thwart Mr Wilson’s efforts Thursday night.
Can’t sit back in Zone and give him time to take advantage of broken coverages, we’re not that good in those terms.
Might need to gamble a bit more?
Seattle OLine isn’t lights out at this point either.
Would like to see more of the LeBeau-style of pre-snap mayhem, without our guys blowing their assignments in the process.
Might be a good spot to feature the TE/RBs and give Carlos a blow?
Be nice if Mr Bush could earn a game check for a change too.
Liked what Geep did early with the quicker paced passing game/roll outs.
Hard to beat Seattle deep but, if Kaep can get into a short-game rhythm inside, we might have something to build on?
NJ, Dom Capers runs the style of D you wants and Mangini aspires to. Is our D too young and inexperienced to handle it. Missing pass rush capable OLB and undertackle for now.
Next two opponents have strong D. Especially the front 4 of the Rams. Will the fear in CK’s eyes reappear. Bail early and run.
Do odds makers have bets on likelihood of QB with blown out knees, or cracked ribs with punctured lungs.
Sounds like Kaep has silenced his critics for a second week in a row. Good for him. I didn’t watch the game but I know two things: the 49ers O line still sucks regardless of the win, and so do the Ravens. Perspective….
ZBS great links, as applied to Detroit Lions
http://www.prideofdetroit.com/2015/10/13/9520833/fixing-detroits-rushing-offense-part-1
http://www.prideofdetroit.com/2015/10/14/9528773/fixing-detroits-rushing-offense-part-2
We face them in December anyway but good ZBS reading.
Bakkentom, Mangini showed some LeBeau-like schemes earlier in the season.
Problem is, we didn’t seem to communicate the assignments properly, which liked prompted the practice to cease for the time being.
Too many blown assignments resulting in chunk yards.
We’re missing the coverage skills Patrick brought to the ILB position too.
Bowman isn’t 100% and can’t pivot and run like he had before the injury.
They’re sitting in Zone, playing it safe.
Not getting to the QB with 4 will cost us vs Russell too.
He’s a guy you have to corral and speed up IMO.
He’s not Aaron Rodgers in terms of timing and accuracy.
He’s a guy that kills you by extending plays while chaos ensues with coverage.
We seem to be dabbling with the OLine in terms of how to proceed?
Are we Zone or Power right now?
Can’t quite seem to know what they’re trying to do right now with the swapping of RGs.
Tiller is more of a mauler-type.
Should be interesting to see what the ideas are for stopping Marshawn and Graham on a short week.
Not sure if Skov or Hodges are an improvement in coverage at this point of the season either.
Need someone to spy Russell and keep contain on him.
They present some challenges that Flacco didn’t in terms of elusiveness.
Could be a good spot for the new DBs like Tartt or Ward?
Our tallest CB is Johnson in terms of Graham’s height advantage.
Can we stand up to Marshawn in Dime?
Might survive with Bowman spying on Marshawn?
Need to load the box better than we have been for this matchup.
NJ
Question: mauler type, power blocking Andrew Tiller, wonder why the mauler Brandon Thomas was not tried. Is he that stiff with his repaired knee?
Or is Thomas experienced on the left side and saved there until a Staley trade goes through and Boone is LT. Now is the time. Denver 6-0 needs Peyton in the game to go deep in playoffs. Get a 2nd, DO IT NOW.
Silence CK’s critics? CK was expected to do well against their crap D. Steve Smith dropped 2 TD passes and Flacco started out slow. BALT O failed.
If CK is as good as you think, the next 2 games will bare all, one way or the other.
From what I’ve read Bakkentom, BThomas is better suited on the left side.
Which isn’t going to do him much good unless they move Boone to RT.
I do think he’s slow on the recovery as well. Certainly a factor.
Kilgore should help with the rotation when he’s back to playing shape.
Injuries are always unpredictable.
We’ve kinda gotten into a ‘Catch-22’ with the style of play we’re favoring in recent weeks.
ZBS worked fine when we had no film to prepare on with MN.
Hasn’t come close to working since.
Seattle has shown a habit of flushing Kaep to his left.
We have to prepare a counter-punch to change it up.
Especially with the right side of our OL looking as vulnerable as it has.
Kaep has looked better the past 2 weeks, simply because Geep is speeding up the reads with the short stuff.
No, Kaep isn’t scaring anyone IMO.
He’s still slow to recognize what the Defenses are doing and, he doesn’t anticipate his throws quickly enough for my liking.
But, for now, Geep is putting a Band-Aid on the problems with the quick-hitters.
Anxious to see how Torrey matches up on Sherman too.
Can he turn Sherman around on double moves?
Tough assignment.
Still think we need to threaten inside the seams better than we do.
Seattle figured Kaep out long ago.
They may written the book on how to neutralize him.
Kaep needs to take what’s given and, he’s not quick to see the options most of the time.
Recognition/Anticipation play a BIG role at the QB position.
He’s simply not there yet.
CK has long, skinny legs. He is scared of a pass rush and collapsing pocket. Long passes from him only available on no pass rush D’s.
Montana called him a coward for not stepping up in the pocket, choosing to bail and run on the sniff of a potential hit.
If he has turned the corner, next two games is it. ATL may still be soft on D. Has Beasley made himself known yet?
Atlanta is the least of our worries.
It’s all about the NFCW.
Yes, Montana was being a tad too cute for me.
He seems to suggest that we let Kaep do what he wants to do. RUN.
Any successful QB in this game knows that you need to function from the Pocket to be successful.
As you suggest, it’s simply a matter of time before someone takes a cheap shot at his legs as he’s seeking the sideline for safety, like douchebag Matthews in GB did last year.
Little surprised at Joe, playing it down as he did, to be honest.
Even more concerned about the comments former Coach Ault made about his mechanics.
It’s pretty obvious to most people, Kaep has plenty of areas in which he can improve his effectiveness, without trying to slip out the back door at the first sniff of pressure.
Defenses know that a fast onslaught will scatter his intentions and, limit his passing production.
He lacks the ‘Cool’ Joe made a career with.
Kaep has to slow down his feet, speed up his eyes and arm and, see what’s there to take advantage of.
Can’t say mechanics don’t matter when you’re throwing like a rag doll while hurrying everything up.
All works in rhythm or, it’s doomed to suffer the consequences of being forced into dumb mistakes, ala AZ a few weeks back.
Grant Cohn getting lots of nasty comments on his post game grades article with CK. Young and naive to old and stupid, cross section of CK’s fan club.
Hey, it’s true that the offensive coordinator / head coach is babying Kaepernick to try to regain some confidence and these last two games were ideal for that to happen. There really was no choice except to bench him, which I thought would have been the better alternative, but that’s just me, because if he kept going on that slide he was on he’d be less than useless.
Seattle’s secondary just got embarrassed by Carolina. They won’t be easy on us after that.
Our o-line isn’t that bad against weaker opponents.
Bowman will, no doubt, defend the tailback coming out of the backfield. But it will take a safety in support, too.
I don’t know why Seattle doesn’t run Graham on a seam route and Lynch behind him in a cleared out defense. That ‘seems’ like a killer play to me. The more anyone defends it, the more opens up for a mobile QB with eyes downfield.
As for the helmet to the ribs of Ian, it’s not really a cheap shot as he was trying to swat something down or block the lane. It’s why D-linemen get cut, which is worse?
So who will write an article, a post-mortem if you will, on what has been learned from the RG III and Colin Kaepernick phenomena in the eyes of coaching staffs, GM, owners, and scouts.
Why have those two lasted so long in pro ball and would they ever do it again. Not all college QB’s run a pro offense. What kind of screens for mental aptitude for QB’s.
Would anyone draft a pistol QB out of college ever?
With the current CBA, players aren’t practicing in pads enough. O-lines therefore going to shit. Owners give a new coach two or maybe three years to win playoffs. GMs not much longer. Not nearly enough time to build a strong team even with extremely successful drafts and hitting on FAs. Much easier to keep your job using a system that’s easy to install and run and defenses weren’t used to defending.
So you can attract athletes to your college program because you run a pro system and put lots of players into the league or you’re a school that wins a lot of games and attracts all the scouting albeit with a college system that doesn’t translate all that well.
I’m fine with an athletic QB, as was the case with Steve Young.
I suspected Kaep would be a project the day he was Drafted.
Difference between he and RG III is size/strength.
RG III is not a chiseled/muscled guy by comparison.
Gave high marks to Kaep for intelligence as well.
Harbaugh/Roman did well mating the Power O to the Pistol.
There has to be a Pocket element to the Pro development however.
Seeing what a Defense is doing to shut you down, mask their coverages etc.
I think Kaep could emulate a guy like Aaron and, outdo him physically but….
Kaep doesn’t react or dissect the coverages, nor has he developed the excellent touch to attack the LB level just yet.
Crossing my fingers….
So if I were a GM the only effective screen for a QB is proof by running a pro scheme in college. Not worth the financial and coaching expense to ever take a chance on a pistol type QB.
CK is the worst case disaster. Never again.
I’ve respected Kaep’s determination to compete and keep fighting too.
Rarely see him getting down or giving up.
He has over compensated at times, especially with the efforts to beat Sherman.
Nice to see him attack his kryptonite so to speak but, he needs better accuracy and timing to accomplish that feat.
Obviously, he’s got a way to go, but again, I admire his moxie, he just needs to be smarter than to get baited into errors.
Hoping that day will come for us.
NJ,
Just like Tank does not have the reaction time to excel in pass rushing, CK cannot be coached and developed to be a pocket passer.
He is stupid. He has got mega attention by coaches to fix him. He does not possess the brain to handle NFL pocket passing. As Michael Shuman said (former niner receiver in 1982), all the hardware but no software.
Can’t say ‘stupid’ at this point Bakkentom.
I try to keep a positive approach to QB development, because I know how tough it is to win in this League.
Hard to teach a runner to relax I guess?
He handles the ball well enough, IMO, to transition to play action perhaps?
Great physical tools but, as you suggest, can he handle the mental aspect of the game?
Hard to know how much was expected of him in the Harbaugh/Roman scheme too.
Made the comment many times, do we blame the teachers or, the pupil?
He’s now going into another Offense which also slows that learning curve to some degree.
Not ready to scrub him just yet, personally.
The past couple of weeks do suggest that Geep and Logan are tinkering with his psyche just a bit, to get him more focused on the timing requirements needed to execute specific plays.
Actually enjoyed hearing Rich Gannon today too.
He was pretty fair about his critique of the position and, the nuances needed to succeed as a QB.
For me, Kaep needs to do more mental reps at a faster pace.
Eyes, feet, arm speed, all need to be in sync with the timing of the plays.
Some of that is play design of course, which is still evolving.
Nice balance today which stands in stark contrast to what we saw in AZ.
Looking forward to shutting up Richard Sherman if at all possible.
Torrey should be of benefit to the inside game, if he can occupy Sherman and threaten Thomas deep.
Hoping Geep designs something to work in that direction and, Kaep is poised enough to exploit it.
Gotta get him away from the ‘flush left’ tendency that Seattle has been able to execute in recent matchups.
Guessing more TE help to the right side would be a good place to start?
Gannon made a comment or 2 on the release needing to be more automatic.
There’s still a bit of hesitation involved with Kaep seeing or feeling the timing needed on any given play.
He’s gotten a tic better the past couple of weeks.
Still hasn’t mastered the accuracy to turn a short pass into a bigger gain by placing the ball on, or behind a target, just enough to have them break stride.
Hopefully that comes with more game reps.
I thought Gannon set out his bias, or his support of Kaepernick, from the opening remarks. He doesn’t really have the option of not being supportive.
Personally, I think he will regress to the bad Kaepernick as soon as he faces tougher defenses. He threw two picks today, after all, in the face of no pressure, no pass defense.
I’m actually amazed that fans think a QB has to have what Kaepernick had today, no pressure, bad defense, to be any good. Anyone with the skills to be drafted as a pro QB can make the throws when he has all day and no pressure.
I don’t think Joe Montana gives a shit about the 49ers or the NFL. I doubt he cares whether Kaepernick is any good or what to do about it.
Agree NoFear49er, pretty low bar to place a lot of platitudes on today.
Shareece Wright was basically a ‘plant’ of sorts for US 😀
As suggested, Kaep needs to do this against the NFCW, starting on Thursday night.
We’ll see whether Geep can scheme something beneficial, against our nemesis Seattle, who needs this game as badly as we do.
If Kaep can’t digest the speed and complexity of the Defense and, make smart decisions, he’ll get exposed/exploited.
Big spot to show some chops.
You’re right about Joe too.
He still has me scratching my head with regard to Kaep ‘telling the Coaches’ what HE wants.
Don’t think that’ll work, even for a guy like Joe.
New post is up.
Astute observation from NF:
“So you can attract athletes to your college program because you run a pro system and put lots of players into the league or you’re a school that wins a lot of games and attracts all the scouting albeit with a college system that doesn’t translate all that well.”
