Theeeeey’re back!
Most of them, anyway. Some. Okay, just the rookies and a few vets.
But it’s once again “What have you done for me lately?” time. Last season? Old news.
The team’s veterans won’t be reporting until Thursday, with the first full team practice scheduled for Friday. We dedicated bloglodytes will be watching closely to see if Dashon Goldson shows up for work or decides to engage in a foolish, selfish, sickening, repugnant, infantile, criminal hold out. The Outsider will reserve judgment until said Thursday deadline, assuming this dumb, preening, arrogant, greedy, overinflated numbskull will accidentally do the right thing and get the hell in here on time.
The 49ers will enter training camp viewed by most as one of the top five teams in the league. Football Outsiders (no relation to 49ers Outsider) has them pegged for around seven wins this year, courtesy of their million simulation robotoids, which is enough to dissuade youngsters from choosing math or statistics as a career choice. When your formulas result in cartoonish results, it’s time to rework the model — or discard the whole silly hypothesis.
The 49er defense made believers out of the entire league in 2011, but no such acclaim redounded to the 49ers QB, Alex Smith. Pro Football Talk calls him the “weak link on offense,” while Football Outsiders views his 2011 effectiveness as unsustainable. IOW, last year was a fluke, carefully orchestrated by Jim Harbaugh, and Smith is not a QB on the rise, as his statistics suggest, but a mediocre talent, as his reputation insists.
The NFL schedule makers certainly are curious to evaluate Smith and the team. They have the 49ers facing Green Bay and Detroit to open the season with a challenging bang. The Detroit game is a prime time Sunday nighter, proving that a handshake still carries a lot of weight. But the fact that this game made prime time, rather than the more significant Green Bay game, shows the NFL still knows a good feud is more marketable than a good game.
There’s no denying the importance of these two games, though. We fans will get a crash course in just how much better, if any, the offense is compared to last year. We were in the same position in 2010, hoping to see a much more sophisticated offense in the second year of the Mike Singletary/Jimmy Raye reign of error. Alas, the offense trundled out the same grunt look as the first year, and the team went 0-2 on its way to 0-6, sucking the life out of the season before the team even reached the bye week.
Almost nobody thinks Jim Harbaugh/Greg Roman will duplicate their predecessors ineptitude, but there’s no denying an 0-2 start would send shivers through the fan base. Even a 2-0 start, if achieved mostly by defense and special teams, would cause unrest and a smidgeon of doubt.
Let’s face it, the 49er offense has been kind of an embarrassment for quite some time now. This is a franchise with a long history of potent offenses. This is the season fans hope to finally see something scary happening when the 49ers have the ball. And I do mean good scary, not cover your eyes scary.
If I’m Baalke I would give Goldson until Aug 3 to report
which is one week from the first preseason game.
If he’s not in camp I pull the offer and say good luck to him.
At that point he’s just a disruption and if I have to I go forward with what we have or move Culliver over with a full training camp and plug in Cox as the 3rd slot corner with Brock
as the backup.
I am anxious to see how Tolzein looks in our offense. Hopefully he get’s at least 3 series to show what he can do in the first preseason game.

I like all of our QBs. Too bad one will probably have to go.
Tolzein’s odd man out. Unless JJ completely falls flat on his face. They can PS him and hope no one takes him, but he likely won’t last there.
.
Goldson’s on a fool’s mission to sabotage his own career. He turned down a big payday to take a $3 million pay cut, had a front row seat to the AF situation and the hardball deal the FO worked with Alex Smith, and now he’s dissatisfied with a $4 million raise?
.
Go figure.
I hate all our QBs. Too bad all four will probably stay.
damm CHUCK !
you’re right ! tolzein might even get scooped up be san diego !
bummer !
i was holding out hope that we could keep all four by putting tolzein on the PS ! 馃檨
Well, that’s the risk. Play Tolzein too much, and give him too much exposure and you guarantee he gets snatched up off the PS. I seriously doubt they keep 4 QBs on the active roster though.
CHUCK
of course we throw tolzein all the snaps we can and/but hope for the best !

look at my link above !
ummm what do they call a ‘unit of pain’ ?
i think that pretty much explains and describes every post our own DEL mar dennis’ makes about our QB’s !
how many is that now ?
Link don’t work.
Hey guys…well the seasons here..i haven’t felt this excited about an upcoming season in a long long time…as for the qb’s..we’re set…i believe Smith will be considerably better this year…same for Kappy…and i don’t think Tolzein is going anywhere either..i really like him…if he’s not playing for us in a couple years…then he’s going to be the next Kevin Kolb…groomed and showcased..then traded outside the division for high draft picks…thats my prediction for what little it’s worth…as for Johnson…i think he’s the camp casualty…
Tony
I was thinking the same thing. If Josh Johnson doesn’t beat out CK for backup he’s gone because if you keep him you’ll have an older 3rd string QB who’ll never develop due to lack of snaps.
For JJ it’s all or nothing and would be suprised if he hung around as the 3rd emergency QB.
bullit,tony- I agree it is proably JJ that is gone but I would not be surprised if it is Tolzien or if we keep 4. All options are on the board.
JJ is 26, Tolzein is 24. Not much of a difference there. I don’t think it comes down to age. The one thing about Tolzein is he’s still eligible for the practice squad. JJ isn’t, due to 3 seasons of being on an NFL roster. Like I said, JJ only loses out if he completely flops. Or he does well, and they trade him near the end of the preseason.
.
They are hoping against hope that Cappy is the #2, but who knows? Maybe JJ passes him, and Cappy becomes trade material.
Thanks for finally writing about > 49ers Outsider
Randy Moss reported a day early.
He wants to get to work.
He has the right mindset and leadership attitude that can only lead to good things.

So far, I’m pleasantly surprised with Moss. Crossing my fingers it stays this way.
Hey Grump, what happened to your boy Spitwad. I went to his website and all the content had been deleted. Has he bailed out of the blogworld like NoFear?
Veterans report today!
Spitty probably fell into a big bong and couldn’t get out.
When the Niners returned to their winning ways the side I refer to as “haters” ran out of material
and even they realized how stupid they were sounding reciting the same tired attack over and over.
NF went to his bullying and intimidation tactics and bailed when he found them to be ineffective.
At least I was able to give NoFear an informative seminar on the 3-4 defense before he left. He has to feel more educated these days.
Not sure, but its so kind of you to inquire, Skeebs. I’ll send the Spitter an email telling him that you miss him.
In less frightful news… Dashon Goldson just signed his one-year tender. We’re “all in”, let the season begin.
Grumpy- Did you learn from the 3-4 seminar?
Grumpy seems a little grumpy this morning.
I think he missed the seminar. If you missed it that would make you Grumpy two!
I’m thinking Spit went for the coup de grace and banned himself from his own site.
Del and I always thought he would get thrown overboard by one of his fishing guide clients after he started talking. Maybe the ocean is his big bong.
Interesting: The 49ers have signed G Leonard Davis to a one-year contract.
Does that mean RG is not necessarily Boone’s farm?
Insurance, I would think, Berger
So we got him from State Farm to cover Boone’s farm?
So Spitty’s sleeping with the fishes?
Nobody knows?
Isn’t Leonard a biscuit shy? A biscuit shy of 400 lbs?
Yeah, he’s trying to eat his way out of the NFL . . .
OMG OMG OMG ! GOLDSON SIGNED ! WOW WOW WOW ! I WAS SWEATING THIS BIGTIME ! MAYBE GOLDSON HASN’T DESTROYED HIS WHOLE LIFE ! MAYBE he’s ok after all !
i wasn’t worried at all about the 49er’s mind you , it was GOLDSON i was REALLY worried about !
whew !
RIGHT GUYS ???
SKEEBS !
COOL news ! i always liked davis ! imho he’s a good pickup for us !
Regardless Davis passed the conditioning test which sounds brutal. From Maiocco
===
“Davis showed up Thursday morning in good shape. He was able to pass the team’s conditioning test with 18 runs of 40 yards in under 7 seconds, he said.”
“I went out and ran it,” he said. “They told me to do a certain number, but I was kind of like, ‘This isn’t too bad,’ and I did the same as everyone else.”
====
So you guys think Larry Allen and Kevin Gogan weighed 325???
http://www.mercurynews.com/49ers/ci_21165506/49ers-sign-three-time-pro-bowl-guard-leonard?source=rss
imho davis might just push alex boone at G ! if he doesn’t beat alex out for the spot imho he’ll be our main backup in the middle of the 0-line !
nice pickup for us imo !
BULLIT !
good points !
The Seahags just signed Antonio Bryant. That’s a WTF or an OMG move.
Also Marshawn Lynch has pleaded not guilty to the DUI and his attorney says there will be a lengthy investigation. I always thought this was open and shut. They test your blood alcohol level. Ig you’re over than you’re intoxicvated. What’s to investigate?
Ask Antonio Bryant. He got pulled over in San Mateo going 110 in his Lambo, tried to run into someone’s house, resisted arrest, blew a .18 and pled down to reckless. If that’s me, I get 6 months in Redwood City. He got a $500.00 fine and nothing else.
New post is up.
