Almost Time for Almost Football

With one week of practice in the books, the 49ers have lost two starters to injury — ILB Malcom Smith and LG Joshua Garnett. Smith is out for the year and Garnett for a month or so.

Neither loss is particularly devastating. Smith’s injury pushes Reuben Foster into the starting lineup and Garnett was little more than a younger mediocrity among an O-line full of mediocrities.

We’ll get our first look at the latest “new” Niner team this coming Friday, when the team travels to Kansas City for the first exhibition game of the 2017 season. In the meantime, below is Maiocco’s first projection of the final 53 man roster. We’ll check back in four weeks, maybe, to see how accurate he was. A lot of new names to get familiar with, if we’re going to politely and astutely castigate them in the coming days and weeks.

Supposedly Smith had extensive experience in the Seattle D that we are implementing. Witness pass D of LB’s.

Good examples of LB’s screwing up were in those all-22’s I commented on recently. Ray Ray Armstrong and Tank Carradine were among the culprits in those.

Without him, pass coverage breakdowns will be more likely.

Why did Gase choose Cutler over muzzie-loving cop-hater scrawny faux QB.

How many one and done HC’s and OC’s will it take. Gase does not have a death wish. Why did KS choose Hoyer. Same reason Gase chose Cutler. Read D. Go through progressions. Pre and post-snap reads with resulting audibles, hot reads, and route adjustments.

Command an offense. Make sure WR’s, TE’s, and RB’S are on the same page. Utilize all tools such as virtual reality headsets. Run no huddle offenses.

Kap is a phucking moron. Dead season, dead HC’s, and dead OC’s in his wake. Last year BG had the tougher D’s. BG led team held Rams scoreless. A squeaker with the dunce.

Miami has a large Cuban population. How will they stomach a Castro loving communist representing their team.

The above two links probably posted when they came out. Here is one on KS design of plays against specific coverages. Need a sharp QB to make the right reads and get it to the receiver schemed open on that play.

Great news on Reuben Foster from a 49erswebzone article.

“49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh stressed that Foster just needs reps and experience in order to become a starter. “He’s much better in the film room, much better in the playbook than I anticipated,” Saleh said.”

This draft class could yield a lot of starters in September. Foster WILL, Thomas DL, Kittle TE are the obvious. Injuries could open the door to Williams and maybe DJ Jones.

Both Thomas (Stanford late graduation) and Foster (Surgery rehab) need reps in new D. Will they play in all 4 preseason games extensively.

Hope so. Both should be week 1 starters.

What was the knock on Eli Harold? As a SAM, backing up Brooks, the pass rush is not as critical. Was that the only minus. He needed to bulk up after his rookie year.

One gapping DL allows them to play fast. Front seven should be in good shape and gelling at end of season.

Could all draft picks next year be on O?

All the young guys getting experience this year. Bodes well for 2018. Day 1,2 of 2018 draft transforms the O roster.

Wow: “The felony DV case against former 49ers CB Tramaine Brock has been dismissed, Santa Clara DA spokesman says. Brock is currently a free agent.”

  8. winderNo Gravatar says:

Someone in our division will pick him up.

  9. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Niners are supposedly interested in bringing him back. Which would be a big time oops, and indicate their current CBs are a sorry bunch.

  10. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Another wow: “Veteran O-lineman Jeremy Zuttah has been released.”

Thought sure he would replace Kilgore.

  11. winderNo Gravatar says:

I think they are serious when they say veterans have to make the team nothing is a given.

The NFL has made 24 referees full time officials.
No more moonlighting at least during the season.

Finally, a game to watch tonight as Shanahan begins his quest to wipe the York stink off the Niner organization.

  14. robNo Gravatar says:

well I’m not at all surprised that Kilgore beat out Zuttah ! what surprises me is that they cut Zuttah based on Kilgore’s injury history . Why not try Zuttah at guard in place of garnett ?

  15. robNo Gravatar says:

    why not keep both ?

  16. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

They apparently like Tim Barnes as the backup.
