So, about next year …
The only thing that could save this year is if COVID went crazy and they had to scrap the season.
The Niners got trashed so bad it looked like the 2016 team out there on Sunday. That was also the year the Panthers went from 15-1 and an SB loss to out of the playoffs and a 6-10 season. The Niners appear to be following that model this year, too.
When Nick Bosa went down in the second game of the year, it was obvious the offense would have to score a lot of points this year. That hasn’t happened. On paper, the offense was back to full strength Sunday, with all its WRs and RBs and TEs finally back on the field, along with QB Jimmy Garoppolo. They produced the worst game of the season, and for Garoppolo, the worst game of his career.
The best part of the game was the Twitter remarks of retired Niner Joe Staley:
- “Damn”
- “What the hell is this??!”
- “Time for an epic comeback!!!”
- “Nevermind”
Speaking of Staley, his replacement, the much ballyhooed super LT Trent Williams, has been stinking up the joint the past few games. He’s had plenty of company from his other four O-line mates, who have been stinking it up, too – just without the “ballyhoo” part. No, they’re only four guys who aren’t very good.
Where the team goes from here is anybody’s guess. Into the shitter full blast, probably, with the next seven opponents all likely to stuff our boys but good. It would be nice if at least they stopped looking like a disorganized mess.
The decision to play Jimmy when he clearly wasn’t ready is all on Shanihan. Major coaching fail. Still, the 2ndary was so bad it hardly mattered.
The whole organization should feel like crap over this one. Epic failure.
The next 7 games are their “Gauntlet” of this season.
Questions are does Sherman come back this week? Say what you will but he’s a difference maker and still a CB that few teams want to pick on. Also Mosely should pass the concussion protocol which solidifies the secondary.
Next is Richburg coming off the PUP list in week 7? That allows you to move Garland to RG.
Finally getting Ford and Ka’wuan Williams back after the bye would be a big boost.
If they go 5-2 against the Gauntlet and finish 3-1 they have a good chance to at least be a playoff team. This year home field advantage is not that critical or that big of an advantage as in year’s past.
Not sure where the point of failure is relative to teams packing the box, and our ability to defeat it.
2 weeks B2B, Philly/Miami brought the house and won.
I put most of it on the QB making the read.
Nick was easily overmatched by a veteran Philly Dline.
Jimmy? Miami?
Hard to say if he’s in there simply for that reason.
If so?
He sucked too.
Still, the easy answer for the opponents is, pack the box and cause pressure. Keeps Kittle from getting out, screws up timing, blows up our plays.
Sadly, Shanny doesn’t seem to have the answer.
Not a good sign for a guy that walked away Lombardi-less in Miami back in February.
If Jimmy is expected to get us back to the glory days, call me skeptical.
He doesn’t seem to have the ‘win at all cost’ demeanor TB12 has. Kinda hoped some of that attitude would have rubbed off on him while he was the understudy.
I don’t see it.
Shanahan needs to call more screens and traps to keep the defense honest.
Pressure was not Jimmy’s problem, according to PFF. He was only pressured on six of 20 dropbacks, and not on his two interceptions.
PFF grade of 31.3, his worst ever. He was horribly inaccurate and uncomfortable in the pocket. Then made it worse by panicking and making some bonehead desperation throws.
People forget how much a QB’s legs affect throwing motion. I’m *hoping* that was the issue. Because that is fixable, with time.
And now Kwon may have a high ankle sprain.
New Niners CB signed off Bucs practice squad Rookie Parnell Motley from Oklahoma.
Forgot that Jordan Reed will also return sometime this season to bolster receiving corps.
More proof that God has a twisted sense of humor: Five weeks into the season, and the only healthy decent cornerback on the roster? Jason Verrett. Who has not had a healthy year since dinosaurs roamed the earth.
Good for you, Jason. Hope he can keep it up.
Horrible news
RIP Fred Dean who died today of Covid19. He was 68 years old.
Our president has no plan and is hiding beneath the covers hoping the monster will go away. He says to live your life normally and nothing to worry about. Tell that to the Dean family Chump. Time for him to retire to Mar a Logo.
We all have fond memories of Fred Dean He was a great one.

Fred Dean was so much fun to watch. Brought so much joy to the Bay Area. RIP Fred Dean.
Surprising:
“The NFL’s Top 4 in PFF edge-rushing productivity:
1. Aldon Smith
2. T.J. Watt
3. Myles Garrett
4. Kerry Hyder“
Makes you wonder if it’ll be Bosa and Hyder next year. So long, Dee, and thanks for the half season.
My thoughts, too.
Looks like Moseley is cleared to play after concussion crap.
So the Chefs claim Laveon Bell off waivers.
Their rookie RB is outstanding and the move might be keep away from their division rivals Broncos and Chargers who are hurting at RB.
If Aldon had been able to keep himself out of trouble the last 6-7 years, he’s have close to 150 career sacks by now and be a lock for Canton.
“Weston Richburg, Ronald Blair and Julian Taylor are eligible to return to practice next week, but Kyle Shanahan said they are not healthy enough to do that. He is looking at between Weeks 10-12 for those players to return.”
Shades of 2015-2018: hope we don’t get embarrassed tonight on SNF yet again.
49errs will wear their white retro unis tonight and also a 74 sticker on their helmets to honor Fred Dean.
49ers inactives:
QB C.J. Beathard
RB Jeff Wilson
WR Dante Pettis
DL Darrion Daniels
OL Tom Compton
LB Kwon Alexander
CB Dontae Johnson
Looks like Mullens is back as the number two QB.
I think we’ll bounce back tonight and play much better, assuming Garoppolo’s ankle is right.
Whether that means anything for this year beyond 9-7 instead of 7-9, I’m less certain.
Looked better than last week, but still three losses behind Seattle. Always nice to beat the Rams though.
New post is up.
