49ers 34, Rams 31

The 49ers showed a championship  heart in their victory over the Rams on Saturday night, but not a championship talent level.

They were outplayed for most of the game, and it took a brilliant defensive play by Fred Warner to steal the lead at the half and a clutch Jimmy Garoppolo game winning drive at the end which featured two consecutive 3rd and 16 conversions. The second one was a 47 yarder to Emmanuel Sanders that set up Robbie Gould‘s 33 yard game winning FG.

When the two teams met earlier in the year, the Niners sacked Jared Goff four times and made his life miserable the whole game. In that game, the team had Ronald BlairDJ JonesKwon AlexanderJaquiski Tartt, and Dee Ford. In Saturday night’s game, they had none of those guys.

The difference was no sacks and no pass rush on Goff, who was free to pick apart the secondary and make it look a whole lot like last year’s secondary. That makes three straight games they’ve looked that way, getting trashed by the Saints and Falcons, as well as the Rams.

The Niners were also missing two interior offensive linemen against the Rams which resulted in six sacks against Garoppolo.

Without Blair, Jones, and Ford, Arik Armstead has reverted to the form he showed in his first four years. Which is mostly MIA.

At least the Niners are getting experience in nailbiter games. They’ve had eight this year and won five. Unfortunately, next week’s winner take all game in Seattle will be against a Seahawks team that has won nailbiter games all year long.

With a healthy team, the 49ers  would be a very good bet against Seattle, who have their own injury problems, losing two guys this past week. Both teams need a first round BYE to get some players back from the injury list. Neither team is going to get very far in the playoffs without that BYE.

The 49ers haven’t won in Seattle since 2011. Now would be a good time to end that streak.

The Garoppolo 46 yard pass on 3rd and 16 had a little more to it per Barrows

“Jalen Ramsey seemed to stand still as Sanders blew past him and then drifted away from the Rams safety.
As Garoppolo stepped into the throw, Rams linebacker Cory Littleton launched himself toward the quarterback, hitting Garoppolo’s right arm as he followed through. It caused the pass to be underthrown, but it didn’t matter. Sanders collected it at the Rams 28-yard line and three plays later, Gould knocked in his second game-winning kick in the last three weeks.”

Garoppolo converted 2 3rd and 16s with the rush in his face and that says a lot as to how much he has matured as a QB and stands tall in the pocket. To prevent getting sacked he does have to check the ball down. In this game the only RB he threw to was Juszczyk on a screen
which was out of character for this offense which targets RBs extensively.

  2. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Criticism on Armstead is a little harsh because he made a handful of standout plays that I saw.

The second INT that Garoppolo threw IMO was poor play design. It was a pass to Sanders that Ramsey tipped. There was too much traffic in the area as 2 other Niner receivers were within 10 yards of the pass and that made 5 Ram defenders around the ball when tipped and one of them came down with the ball. Less congestion and the ball falls harmlessly to the turf.

  3. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The player I thought had a horrible game was Witherspoon who seemed to be a step slow and allowed receivers to run away from him to get open and he took poor angles on a couple of key plays.
Yesterday he reverted to his 2018 form with poor play.

  4. bullitNo Gravatar says:

What hurt the offense was incomplete passes on 1st down. In the first half the offense was having trouble with second and long which became third and long.

Halftime adjustments led to several screen passes which resulted in large chunks of yardage.

As I said previously nothing is more frustrating then to have Kittle stay in to block and watch Garoppolo get sacked because he can’t find an open receiver. Throw that out of the playbook because Kittle should always be going out for a pass unless it’s a called run.
He is the Niners #1 offensive threat and you are neutralizing the threat by having him block.

Richie James is an explosive player evidenced by hi 82 yard KO return. Shanahan should have a couple of specialty plays for him in the gameplan because he is capable of the big play.

  5. NJ49ERNo Gravatar says:

McVay schooled Shanny all night by rolling Goff away from pressure.
But for a couple of big plays we lose.
    Ugly wins count of course.
Witherspoon and Shanny need to step it up to beat Pete.

  6. winderNo Gravatar says:

I also thought that Armstead played a pretty good game. We are a very good team with all our starters but our depth is still not there. We are winning games mostly because Jimmy is a true gamer. He makes mistakes at times mostly holding on to the ball to long. Rarely do you see him throw one away. We are gonna have to go back to the drawing board on defense if were gonna get a win in Seattle. Goff is a pretty good QB but Wilson is probably the best in the league right now. Living in Northern Oregon we’ve been having some weather and that should be even worse in Seattle come next week. Don’t know if that will help or hurt. Our players will definitely need to eat their spinach and open up a can of whoop-ass if were to get a win up there.

  7. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

We are hurting with injuries, as are the Seahawks. Big nemesis Clowney will need offseason surgery for his core injury from week 10 which was our game.

    https://www.fieldgulls.com/2019/12/21/21032838/jadeveon-clowney-quandre-diggs-doubtful-seattle-seahawks-week-16-arizona-cardinals-kendricks-griffin

We need a lot of help including the bye. Looks like our killer DL ensemble needed Ford. Jimmy and O have to get us the win. Hopefully the rejiggered IOL just needs coaching and can hold off the pass rush next Sunday.

On pins and needles with QB health and OL pass pro. Yikes.

Can our OL sustain pass pro until 2.5 seconds at all?

  8. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Looks like Gruden and the Raiduhs are in complete disarray.

Year 3 of Gruden could be a tear down where they ditch Carr throwing him under the bus. He completed 70% of his passes this season.
On this track Raiduhs won’t be relevant for another 3 years.

How’s that 10 year Million dollar a year contract looking now for Mark Davis?

Maybe you should’ve given Mack and Cooper their money rather than ditching them.

  9. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

I’m not saying Armstead doesn’t take up space as well as the next guy, but he’s supposed to break the bank this offseason and I don’t see him as worth it. I don’t trust guys who only produce one year out of five and can’t generate any sacks without a bunch of studs around him getting most of the attention.

  10. winderNo Gravatar says:

Armstead looks like he’s coming into his own both he and Bosa kept putting pressure on Goff as best they could. Everyone knows how good Buckner is but he couldn’t catch Goff either. They game planed us pretty good with all those roll-outs. Overall Armstead has the most sacks and has been double-teamed all most as much as Bosa. We truly miss DJ Jones.

  11. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Two guys on that didn’t get any offense snaps yesterday, Breida and Pettis.

Still in 1st quarter but Aints are down 14-0 to Titans.

Aints come back and win by 10.

In Seattle Cards lead by 14 with 4 mins left in game.

Seahags are down to 3rd string RB as Carson went out with hip and Prosise with arm problem.

Let’s see if I’ve jinxed this.

  15. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    From Wagoner ESPN

“Niners win or tie would wrap the NFC West division. A win would clinch the No. 1 seed. A tie could mean anything from 1 to 3, pending other results. And, for now, Niners ascend back to No. 1 in NFC.”

We’ll see what the Seahag RB situation is for next Sunday.

  16. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Niners open up as a 3 point favorite against the Seahags in the Vega$ sportsbooks.

  17. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

I’m just hoping Shanny puts something together against Pete that looks better than his efforts last night vs McVay.
He’s beginning to concern me relative to appearing to get too conservative in these big spots.
Offense has to keep the Defense fresh.
    BYE on the line.

  19. bullitNo Gravatar says:

If the Rams have a knee jerk reaction to not making the playoffs and being 8-8 it sure sounds like Harbaugh’s last year here. Disruption will only show dysfunction.
Rams took the bait from the Jags and gave them much draft capital and now have to face salary cap hell because Ramsey wants to get paid. They traded a first round pick for Brandin Cooks who signed a 5 year deal for $16mil a year, Gurley who has an arthritic knee who has $43 mil of his contract guaranteed and Goff has a contract which pays him $35 mil a year with $110 mil guaranteed.

It seems the GM has committed to some very bad deals that will hamstring the team from needed improvements.

High profile guys like Weddle, Mathews and Fowler will not be back.

Wonder what the Rams will look like next season. Phuck the Rams.

  20. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Seahags won’t have RB Carson or LT Brown when they face the Niners this week. They will go with backups and guys signed off the street.

It appears to be an act of total desperation if Petey brings back Marshawn Lynch. They supposedly are meeting today.

    https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2019/12/23/report-marshawn-lynch-to-meet-with-seahawks-monday/

  22. WinderNo Gravatar says:

I think it’s pretty much a done deal with Lynch. Perfect scenario for us we have the opportunity to not only win in Seattle but get the best of Wilson and Lynch. The perfect trifecta.

  23. WinderNo Gravatar says:

And, if we don’t beat em then we really don’t deserve the #1 seed.

  24. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Don’t know how much Lynch can help, but the crowd will go nuts when he trots out on the field.

    Merry Christmas Outsiders!

JJ Watt returned to practice for the Texans yesterday. He also tore his pectoral muscle in week 8 coincidentally just like Kwon Alexander on the same day.

Both were thought to be done for this season. Depending on severity of the injuries Alexander could be back for the playoffs and boost the defense.

Niner defense is better with Alexander than without him as he definitely has had a positive impact when he was healthy.

  30. winderNo Gravatar says:

Merry Christmas to all the 49er outsiders of the world.

  31. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Experience reinforces talent. Kwon appears more instinctive due to play recognition. Should be a big help in playoffs with Dre bumping al Jazeera to backup at Strong side LB.

When offseason comes then decisions on salary cap fit of both AA and Kwon.

In the meantime, Just Win Baby.

    Watching Ohio St vs Clemson.

Robert Landers DT 6-1 290 lbs for OSU is a good fat guy in the middle as he’s pretty disruptive.
Not sure his draft position but if he’s there on day 3 Lynch might take a hard look.

Quite a few good players, too few Draft Picks at the moment.

  38. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

A very similar player that made my Draft list this year is playing tonight in place of Jullian Taylor.

PSU DT Kevin Givens – 6’1″/285.
    36 games – 40 solo Tkls/22 TFL and 13.5 Sacks.

He’s raw of course but was very disruptive at PSU.
Hope he’s ready for some serious action. We’re gonna need him.

Your guy Poona Ford made my list too. Now he’s the enemy 😀

Put this kid on the wish list too Bullit –
Boise St DE Curtis Weaver is coming out early.

    40 games/34 Sacks/47.5 TFL

If he slides into our limited Mid RD range he’s worth consideration IMO.

    Someone else to follow.

  41. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bullit I’ve been poking around the PS Roster and found some interesting guys hiding in the shadows.

We’ve got a S I ‘scouted’ way back from Purdue that snuck into SF without detection (by me).
He was a tackling machine at Purdue.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aS2nmLrI5wc

    Jacob Thieneman – 6’1″/215

Thieneman (6-1, 215) originally entered the NFL after signing with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent on May 15, 2019. He was waived by the Giants on June 13, later signed with the Indianapolis Colts on August 26 and was waived on August 31.

A 23-year-old native of Noblesville, IN, Thieneman attended Purdue University (2014-18), where he appeared in 34 games and registered 170 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 11 passes defensed, 7.0 sacks, three interceptions and one fumble recovery.

Some interesting ‘under-studies’ stashed on our PS beyond him.

  42. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

What little there was to read on Givens said (assume DJ Jones on IR has him excluded) he was the only DL over 300 lbs on roster.

  43. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Hidden gems abound. Watching video on Thieneman it showed Jeff George Jr playing QB for Illinois. We are getting old.

Givens is the second Penn St Dlineman added to the D this week as they added Zettel earlier this week.

  44. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Hoping the lighter/quicker Givens is a backfield troublemaker tonight Bakkentom.
His bio suggested that he had some problems in the College years with the bigger OLs.
If we’re using him as a penetrator, keeping Russell in check is key.

  45. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Lot’s of hype about “Beast mode”. Question is it just hype? If he could play where was he all season?

Big mistake is trying to tackle him high. Defense just needs to take his legs out because most of the broken tackles are high.
Also test his ball security as I would look to strip the ball.

  46. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

When he was expected to go: Depending on the analyst, Givens was expected to be drafted anywhere from the fifth round to the seventh round. Some pegged him as a priority free-agent, but a majority felt he was worth a Day 3 pick.

Why he wasn’t drafted: Versatility. Givens is a tweener who can’t play outside but can’t play nose tackle either. He’s a three-technique player — but can be effective in the right defense. He’ll likely never be a three-down starter, but he can play in situational passing downs.

How he fits with San Francisco: San Francisco is going to have one solid front-four with Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead, DeForest Buckner and Dee Ford — all top-25 draft picks in 2014 or later — so the only thing it really needs is depth on the interior. Well, San Francisco failed to address that need during the draft. Givens could potentially earn his way into a few subpackages on passing downs, so he’ll likely provide situational depth in San Francisco. The opportunity is limited here with such a solid defensive line, but Givens will be in position to learn a lot.
