Prove It or Lose It

Hey, look! We’ve got ourselves a MUST WIN GAME!

Hahaha. We haven’t had one of these in quite awhile.

But, let’s face it, if the 49ers can’t beat the Seahawks here at home, they’re not likely to in Seattle. And that would wipe out the two game lead the team has on them now, plus the head-to-head tiebreaker. Good-bye division lead.

Nick Mullens beat Seattle last year to break an ignominious run of futility against them. And that 49er team was nowhere near as good as this year’s team. But, that was last year. It don’t mean squat now.

The team should see the return of Joe Staley and Kyle Juszczyk, which should help the running game. RT Mike McGlinchey could return, also, but his replacement Daniel Brunskill has been very good, so this isn’t a pressing need.

The Niners have a better defense, by far, than Seattle, but this game, like all Seahawks’ games, will come down to Russell Wilson water bugging around in the backfield waiting for one of his WRs to get open 30 yards downfield. If that doesn’t happen, he’ll scramble for ten yards and a new set of downs.

That’s their fourth quarter offense. The first three quarters, they’ll run the ball a lot. The 49ers haven’t been that great stopping the run lately, and the loss of ILB Kwon Alexander won’t help.

So much for the obvious. What we need here is a win, any way we can get it. The team would be 3-0 in the division, with a three game lead over the Seahawks and the Rams. Case closed.

Still, what we want is a little bit more extravagant. Is  it too much to ask for a sweet Carolina-type beat down? The kind that would send these bums back to Seattle with their tails dragging and their spirits squashed. The kind that would have Pete Carroll thinking about hanging up his coaching cleats, tossing out his gum wads, and packing it in.

Yep. Biggest game of the season so far.

As for McGlinchey: This might be unpopular, but here goes. He’s been okay, but not outstanding. Not as good as you’d like to see from top ten pick. Brunskill has made fewer penalties and has looked, to my admittedly very fallible amateur eyes, to be just as good.

McGlinchey needs to elevate his game a bit or he’s going to lose his starting spot down the line. I hope he does – the ideal would be to move him over to the left in a year or two, and we’re set at tackle for a while. But so far, I’m not quite sold.

  2. WinderNo Gravatar says:

Brunskill has been a godsend. Pretty sure this game is gonna be nail biter for 60 minutes. I hope we can introduce Bosa to Wilson at least 3 times throughout game. Wilson is probably the best football player in the league.

  3. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Grump

    Some truth to your observation.

I would groom Brunskill to move over and play RG next season as Person is on a one year contract and he’s the wild card as far as who’s signed for the future.
Remember there’s still Shon Coleman to consider for the future at the OT position.

  4. bullitNo Gravatar says:

If you want to know about overpaying for players you need look no further than the Seahags.
They traded for Jadaveon Clowney who has a $15 mil contract for this year. At midseason point he has 2 sacks.
Seahags signed Ziggy Ansah to a Free Agent contract which will cost the $14 mil this year. He is hurt and has a total of 1 sack.

Both players have proven to be ineffective and are examples of what a bad acquisition looks like.

  5. WinderNo Gravatar says:

Grump- McGlinchey is still young and learning the position. He seems to have all the abilities and attitude to become a good tackle.

  6. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Regular season at halftime so some guesses about offseason happenings.

We have traded away lots of 2020 draft capital. The teams faced so far haven’t exposed major needs and flaws. What will it take to compete at the top, year after year.

This offseason most improving will be coming from FA acquisitions. Weighing cost versus importance of each unit to determine where to spend and save.

Big contracts need to be justified. Are equal and cheaper substitutes on the roster. Are big receivers a necessity, is Kittle and Hurd enough. KS reliance on 200 lb WR may be flawed. Then fix with draft or FA.

  7. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

If Kittle out we can still put up big passing numbers with that no pass rush D.

Playoff on home field, we put up 42 or some high multiple of 7 without Gould. Left side of OLine with Duane Brown, Iupati, and backup C are playing injured. Have a better chance of containing Wilson.

42-20. Big audience on west coast. ESPN big ratings night.

  8. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Bullit, I think Coleman is not under contract for next year. Have to see how that plays out in the off-season

  9. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Grump

Coleman is also signed for next season. Breida is a RFA

  10. bullitNo Gravatar says:

“KS reliance on 200 lb WR may be flawed.”

Yeah Niners reliance on 200 lb Jerry Rice was flawed. What was Bill Walsh thinking???

  11. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Just throwing stuff out there. Early steps mostly done in roster upgrade. Next step is roster ready for super bowls. Best defenses force us to adjust.

Jimmy’s grasp of KS offense showed really good vs ARI. JonnyDel said their D threw the book at him. He recognised each and found the open receiver.

No doubt he boned up on all tools available while IR’d last year. Virtual reality system developed at Stanford. Full KS playbook learned. Being a beta-site and Stanford right here, how much of that playbook put in the virtual system.

Montana and Young did not have this tool. Best franchise QB for us is right now.

  12. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Weakness of wide-9 exposed with ARI. Power gap rushing between the tackles. Do we do 4-3 Under in base?

  13. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Bullit, maybe I’m losing my marbles but doesn’t that show both Coleman and Garland as UDAs for 2020?

  14. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Ravens seem to be getting better as the year goes on.

  15. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Grump

A little communication and confusion here.

I had the Coleman’s mixed up.

I was looking at Tevin Coleman and you were talking about Shane Coleman.

You are absolutely correct that S Coleman is a UFA next season.

  16. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Ah, gotcha. Yeah I was thinking about the tackle position going forward. I’d like to keep Shon, but we have to see where the market is. I’m not optimistic about laying out major dollars for a guy who has an injury history and got dumped by his draft team for a 7th.

Tevin is not going anywhere, since we’ll be dumping McKinnon as soon as the dumping is good. He and Breida will be the backs going forward, with Mostert and Wilson in spots.

  17. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Sure looks like the OC and franchise QB have a mind meld going on. Refreshing to have a mature, sharp QB doing what it takes cerebral wise to absorb the playbook, read of D both pre and post snap, and take what the D gives to know which target will be open.

After mastery of KS 101, then able to modify a given play in game to outfox the DC and win to the endzone. Carson Palmer did this with Arians.

  18. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Goff throws the killer INT to seal the loss to the Steelers. At 5-4 the Rams are realistically hoping now for a Wild Card shot. The division is down to us and the Seahawks, with the Ravens looking like slight favorites over the Pats in the AFC.

    We’re gonna party like it’s 2012…

Very good and timely. Dre played with first team in OTA’s and lots of snaps early. Full offseason a great start. Still in learning curve to become instinctual.

Lots of crap going to hospital Ward’s way. Now Kwon has to deal with injuries. Ward stayed around as relatively cheap with his rookie contract snuck in to his 2nd deal.

Kwon doesn’t have that luxury. He needs to stay healthy.

  21. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

    https://www.49erswebzone.com/commentary/2199-film-field-house-highlights-fro-weeks-one-concern/

“The 49ers are well aware of Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson’s running ability. It’s slightly concerning to see both Bosa and Blair allow significant gains from Murray on zone-read plays that are not new ideas to the NFL.

McCaffery’s long runs and Murray’s zone-read successes are some of the first blatant errors I’ve seen from the 49ers’ defense this season.

This year’s 49ers are a well-rounded team that has shown the NFL it can overcome small errors and win football games. The edge issues are concerning because they look like a slight regression to last season’s errors.”

  22. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Simply not playing the run on the way to the QB.
Coaching needs to identify the problems and teach it up.

  23. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The conundrum with Russell Wilson is he scrambles and keeps plays alive
and only runs when it’s wide open. He always has eyes downfield and is more apt to hit a receiver coming open 25 yards downfield rather than run for 8 yards

  24. bullitNo Gravatar says:

To all the Veterans out there we thank you for your sacrifice and your service that enables us to have a blog like this.

  25. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Small world. Current SEA OL coach is our old Mike Solari. SEA may transition from zone blocking Tom Cable guys to power gap guys. Already have a start with LG Iupati.

Anyway, need to exploit backup C tonight.

    https://www.fieldgulls.com/2019/11/11/20958985/stopping-run-key-monday-night-football-san-francisco-49ers-seattle-seahawks-breida-carson

Let’s see if Dre allows us to keep the edge on D for second half comparisons.

  27. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Not having Kittle tonight is going to be tough. Hopefully, Dwelley can step in and step up. If we do beat them without Kittle, it will be a serious statement about how good the team is. If not, they’ll just have to beat them in Seattle.

  28. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

We are favored by 6 points per the gambling gods.

Marquise Goodwin activated to stretch the field. More space for Eman to get seperations. Goodwin also targeted for deep passes, with SEA pass rush a hype only.

Lots of time for KS to plan. Scripted play strategy and coach tasks to devise quick adjustments. Maybe confident, and allowed Kittle more time to heal.

Will we see mostly 4-3 Under to contain Wilson. Cannot afford OT’s to steer Ford out of the play. Less pressure on Dre to fill the larger gap and deal with double teams.

  29. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

ARI showed pound the rock is best gameplan against our D. LB’s and SS should have helmut to helmut tackle opportunities on Carson often.

    Last man standing.

How many concussions, shoulder, and pec injuries tonight.

  30. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

    Niners released Dontae Johnson, again.

  31. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Kittle being out is a tough blow to the offense.
Celek activated but I suspect Juszczyk will get more chances than normal and makes up for Kittle’s injury.

Want to see Juszczyk on a wheel route for six.

  32. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

NN spells out game plan. Chunk pass plays all night long against a very weak defense.

    49ers inactives

    TE George Kittle
    CB Ahkello Witherspoon
    K Robbie Gould
    RB Jeff Wilson
    QB C.J. Beathard
    OL Justin Skule
    DL Jullian Taylor

  34. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Jimmy misses Kittle. Missed a pass to midget Goodwin. Clowney back assuming good for game.

  35. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

K Williams first hit to slow Carson. Lockett 5 yd catch short of first. DJ made Wilson his bitch. DJ ran over backup C.

  36. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Deebo 30 yd chunk on quick slant. D was on line looking for run.

  37. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Clowney probable to return with shoulder injury. SEA in box looking for run first. Pass away!

Now Coleman 22 yd wuth juice taking out a DT.

  38. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Sanders 1st down slant beating backup CB after Tre Flowers hurt.

Breida inside for 3 yds. Tomlinson false start 5 yds back.

    Bourne TD quick slant. 10-0!!!!!!

Tre Flowers and Clowney both back in game, but not enough.

  39. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Fred Warner hung on for the tackle. Mosley bested Metcalf in underthrew pass. 3 and out. Metcalf offensive PI?

Niners run stopped at LOS on 1st down. Al woods on stop, untouched.

  40. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

3 and out, punt. Moser penalty. Lockett 13 yds from Wilson 1st down.

Wilson 11 on a scramble. Iupati let Warner unblocked on blitz to get SEA out of field goal range. Punt. Excellent!

  41. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Eman 19 yds from 7. Thrown pass away after Clowney pressure.

Bourne got 1st for 8 yds YAC. Breida gets 8 yards. Ben Garland subbing richburg.

  42. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

    Eman injured. Pettis in. Punt.

Dickhead nails Lockett on end around for 3 yds. Big Metcalf easy 1st down.

Bosa pressures Wilson to throw into fred warner. No int but punt into endzone for touchback. So far russ and petey are stiffed.

  43. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Phuck. Reed tackle and fumble on Jimmy and Clowney takes it in for 7. 10-7.

  44. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

    DAMMIT,

Wasted inside run. Staley is rusty on pass pro.

5 yd false start glinch. Pettis hit hard on sideline pass, incomplete, punt. 2 minute warning.

  45. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

WTF their D is bad. Kittle gone. We need a big stud WR!

  46. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

We have dinky receivers. Kittle out, Eman out.

  47. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

8 yd Carson run. Tartt takes ball away from metcalf while Tartt out of bounds. Ball on 1 for who.

  48. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

LUCKY US. Metcalf still possess ball while Tartt takes it away and out of bounds.

Tartt you magnificent bastard. Saved the game for us and our useless no seperation receivers.

  49. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Take Metcalf over any of our duds out there.

  50. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

17 to deebo. Pettis not getting seperation against SEA db’s.

    Miraculously halftime comes.

  51. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Staley and Glinch are rusty from time off. This game should not be close.

  52. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Our D has saved the day for us. O is stagnated without Kittle. We aren’t that good.

  53. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

DeFo takes ball away, stopping SEA drive at midfield.

Our D bailing out our O big time tonight.

  54. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Eman out ribs, DJ Jones out, Richburg hand questionable. K Williams punched ball out .

Kendrick did horse collar tackle on coleman. 15 yds 1st down.

  55. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Jimmy sacked 3rd time by Poona Ford.

Staley easily beat by Clowney all night!

Deebo lost where ball, was. Gave up on downs on 4th and 2 instead of FG.

  56. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Warner got sack but Bosa cornered Wilson and forced him to warner.

  57. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

22 yard punt by SEA gets us ball on our 30.

Staley has been garbage so far tonight. Our D keeping us in game.

  58. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Deebo came back and got 1st on sideline pass after Jimmy scrambled. Refs marked it shy, KS correctly throws flag. Is that ref bought?

  59. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

We really need to score some points.

  60. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Sigh. That wasn’t what we needed. Failure to take advantage of opportunities is going to get us beat tonight.

  61. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

    Won challenge.

Quadra Diggs intercepts. Once again Staley let’s in edge pressure forcing pass. 15 yard line. Carson fumbles and C recovers at 18.

1st and goal with Wilsonmscramble. Hollister for TD 14-7.

    Staley killed our O tonight.

  62. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Injuries to Kittle and Sanders and failure to make tough catches by Goodwin and Bourne are the difference tonight. Deebo is the only guy making any plays now.

  63. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Clowney makes a lot of linemen look like garbage – but Staley is definitely dealing with some rust as well.

  64. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Well, McGlinchey can’t block him either.

  65. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

McGlinchey bullrush ed by Clowney, pressure caused fumble SEA ball. Oline sucks tonight. 10 yd by Hollister puts it on 10.

Carson 9 yards just short of goal line. Carson TD.

  66. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Pretty pass by Jimmy – and now Deebo bobbles it away.

    Not our night.

  67. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Dre puts hit on Solomon Thomas. Wonderful.

Without Kittle and Eman the pass O is lacking. Pass pro not good. What a night.

  68. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Sack. Strip and TD by DeFo.

  69. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

2 pt conversion to Bourne 21-18. Unorthodox night WTF

  70. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Deebo 24 yards seperates and muscles the YAC. Mostert then 8 yards.

    Dwelley 10 yards 1st down.

    Mostert 7 yards.

    KJ Wright down.

Al woods sack after Clowney forced Jimmy to tuck it

    Bourne drops,easy pass for a first. 21-21.

  71. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Bourne with another drop that probably cost us a chance to take the lead. Almost an INT. We are REALLY missing Kittle and Sanders.

  72. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Josh Gordon, big target. 1st down.

  73. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Josh Gordon. Big target. Clutch catch on 46 yd line. Wilson scrambles. 3rd and 16. Hits turner to,32. Under review.

  74. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Hollister inside 20 for 14 yd grab. Dre picks Wilson and brings it back to 49 of SEA.

  75. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Clowney once again gets by dud Staley. Jimmy had to throw away.

  76. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Mostert gets 1st. Mostert 8 more yards. Clowney stops run at LOS. 32 yd line 3rd and 2. FG try from 30.

Spot under review. Flubbed FG .

    Wilson gets another try.

  77. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Where the Hell would we be without guys like Greenlaw, Moseley, Dwelley, etc. Lynch has done a Hell of a job building up the lower half of the roster.

  78. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Jesus more passes off WR hands. At this point we should run out the clock and take the tie before we toss up an INT.

  79. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

And Wilson gets *ANOTHER* chance. Dumb.

  80. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Poor clock management is going to cost us the game. Should have ran it out and taken the tie.

  81. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Pettis drop of a tough catch after Jarran Reed batted up a pass. Bourne deep had long pass broken up.

SEA ball. Carson to 39. Wilson 21 yd scramble to inside 40. Metcalf to 31. 42 yd FG try.

  82. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Part of this one goes on KS for not running the clock out. But honestly, we did not play well enough tonight to win.

  83. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Dud Staley needs to retire his Joe show crap. What a gdamn embarassment.

  84. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Well. We have a problem stopping the run. Oline deficient. Without Kittle and Eman our WR unit is lacking bigtime.

Am no longer a homer. We have major issues.

  85. bullitNo Gravatar says:

In hindsight might have gone for it on 4th and inches instead of settling for the long FG.

Jimmy G was rattled and the RB seemed to be open for checkdowns in the right flat on several occasions and instead he tried to fit the ball in with Dwilley who didn’t have any separation.

  86. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Rush defense wasn’t all that bad.

Seahags would gain 8 yards on 1st down and defense would stone them and force a punt on many times.

Levis showed that it could be as loud as the Stick tonight.

Playoff atmosphere from start to finish.

  87. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Blair made an unbelievable open field tackle on Wilson but hurt himself in the process.

If you told me at the start of the game that Kittle and Gould couldn’t play and we would lose Sanders in the first quarter and the game would go into OT I would take that.

Offense needs to study the film and correct mistakes.

Only failure of defense was containing Wilson and they probably need to spy him with Ward going forward.

  88. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Clowney owned both OT’s tonight. That was unexpected. Has he played injured before. He was on fire tonight and the one that rattled Jimmy.

They defensed our OZ attack the best of any D this season. Not many chunk plays.

The big receivers Metcalf and Gordon tough to defend going forward.

Autopsy by analysts need to tell us why Bourne and Pettis unproductive. Bourne had drops. Pettis seemed to be on field enough when Eman left.

  89. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Easier gameplan for Ken Norton Jr with Kittle out, got easier with Eman out. They took away our big chunk run game.

Hurd needs to get healthy. Bourne and Pettis look to not be starter quality for us.

Containing Wilson is the issue for D improvement. D kept us in this game all night. Kittle and Eman key cogs in the O.

  90. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Solomon Thomas got lots of snaps when DJ Jones left the game.

  91. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Kittle’s blocking missed in the run game. Maybe a big reason for the lack of chunk plays.

  92. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

    New post is up.
