He’s Makin’ a List …

The 49ers aren’t being very cooperative in generating offseason news so far. Unless you count fiddling with the training staff who are apparently solely responsible for wrecking the past two seasons.

I’m sure all this backstage tinkering is going to pay dividends and we’ll hear glowing reports in training camp from players who claim they can run faster and jump farther and leap higher than ever before, but still, it lacks a bit in drama now.

I’d rather hear that HC Kyle Shanahan is buried in his office figuring out ways to score in the red zone next year. Maybe he should sign a couple of sumo wrestlers whose only job was to move some bodies near the goal line.

But I suppose it’s time to put Shanahan to bed for a few months and turn our attention to GM John Lynch. The Free Agency period begins next month and Lynch will make his third stab at helping the team via this route. His first two attempts were a mixed bag. He brought in 22 guys his first year and 7 his second year.

His best pickups were Robbie Gould and Marquise Goodwin. Of the other 27, some were useful, some were not, some have already been cut, and a few have yet to be determined.

All in all, not that bad a job.  The failure of the big name signings or landing anyone who has been a difference maker kind of skews the impression. You can view the 2017 list here:

I hope Lynch is busy with his colleagues trying to play NFL Draft Trade scenarios.
Start a 15 minute clock, get phones ringing in the war room and, taking rapid fire mock offers for the 2nd Pick.
Also, send plenty of accolades to DC Danny, and others, who might be interested.

Falcons just released Brian Poole a slot CB.
At 26 years old he’s a decent CB and the Niners should take a long hard look at signing him.

  3. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

    Lots of options Bullit.
I sincerely want a windfall offer for slot 2.
Your Man Ominahu is looking like my early Sleeper Pick at this point.
    Will Lynch gamble?
    I highly doubt it.
    Hope I’m wrong.

  4. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

They need to stay in the top 5 NJ, IMO. If someone trades with them it’ll be for a QB. But there are no bona fide QB studs like the last couple years. So the offers won’t be windfall-ish.

We NEED a pass rusher in the worst way. They will get one staying in the top 5. So, they may as well stand pat and get what they get. Bosa, Quinnen, or Allen. Likely yet another D Lineman in Quinnen.

  5. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

I don’t buy the hype Charlie.
I love Q, Clelin and Ominahu.
I also love the value of slot 2.
    1 Pick or multiple Picks?
    I go with more Picks.

  6. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

No love for Bosa. No interest in gambling on Allen either.
I simply don’t buy into all the hyped guys.
If someone wants the slot, hold them up. Take the most you can get.

Forget Shanahan and Lynch. Lynch is going to screw it up. He has no choice being so out of his depth.

Spend some time enjoying Polian’s AAF league instead. No idiots kneeling, hardly any commercial breaks and zebras and their flags keep a low profile.

Always seeing somebody you wondered where he went. General Q Patton playing against Dennis Erickson’s team this AM. Patton’s team blanked Singletary’s team last week. I haven’t heard if Singletary thanked them for kicking his ass, but there’s a lot to like if you like football more than all the irritating bullshit of every NFL game.

  8. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

Go watch high school football, NoFear. That’s about the caliber of play. Yippee.

No talk of Reid and Kaepernick winning their collusion fight with the NFL, Skeebs? Of them knocking Goodie Goodell off his pedestal? Of the league wimping out and running for cover amid more suspensions for players beating up women?

  9. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Ah, NoFear’s stalker checks in. Yippee.

I hate to break it to you, Chuck, but they didn’t “win” their collusion case. If they had proof of collusion, they’d have gone to trial instead of settling. What they did have proof of was that owners say embarrassing stuff to each other in emails, so these super rich guys found out the price of Kaepernick’s “principles” and paid him to go away. It’s called legalized extortion.

I’m sure Kap’s lawyer will try to spin his client selling out for money as a “victory” and there will be plenty of gullible dimwits like you to buy that yarn and rant hysterically like your above psychotic episode demonstrates, but Goodell and the owners just flicked aside an annoying bug and will keep right on laughing all the way to the bank.

  10. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    I repeat Go Niners!!!

    Phuck the Rams!!!

  11. winderNo Gravatar says:

Nofear-I would have loved to hear Singletary’s post game locker room speech. How funny.

  12. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

Hey Winder, Singletary’s D looks pretty good. O is weak. What’s new? He does have Zac Stacy (late of the Rams) putting up some rushing yards. Speaking of offense, Mike Martz is running a team from San Diego there, Steve Spurrier has one too. Lots of guys there with 49ers history. Saw Mike Purcell, playing for Dennis Erickson, getting pushed around at nose tackle yesterday. Strangley familiar.

Chuck doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Mostly because there’s no one telling him what his opinions are on the AAF yet. A lot of talent there. Many of them with recent NFL experience. Some guys are lacking and inexperienced and have to develop so not that much different than watching the Niners lately but without the pain of all the BS of the NFL games.

  13. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

    bullit says “Phuck the Rams!!!”

But if Lynch trades for any of them, from Aaron Donald to some broke-down d-back, bullit will praise him as the best in the league.

  14. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

Reid has signed two NFL contracts since his lawsuit for collusion blackballing him. He thinks that proves he was blackballed. So now Chuck thinks every player or coach with only a single team offering to sign him is obviously being blackballed? Probably.

I wonder how much was offered to Reid to settle (not much I’ll bet) and so dragging Shit7torm’s lawyers to insist on joining.

I read somewhere Kaepernick was approached to play in the AAF league but wanted $20MM. AAF is not about big money contracts and Kaepernick knows better than anyone how a lousy showing, or a good showing, would affect his “poor persecuted me” argument. IOW, if he was any good he would play for free to make his case.

Oh well, he still has Chuck and evidently you can’t get rid of him.

    Unflattering piece on Jaylon Ferguson.

    https://www.dawgsbynature.com/2019/2/15/18226119/cleveland-browns-jaylon-ferguson-john-dorsey-kind-of-player

Vetting of edge better be thorough. Combine and Pro Day’s will push up the sleepers. After Thomas and Foster am hoping that Lynch/Peters/Mayhew finally get it.

  16. winderNo Gravatar says:

I was reading a ppf article on the AAF and they do have some familiar names. I imagine it will open some doors to get back to the NFL. I am truly disgusted with the direction the NFL has taken and not sure it can ever get back to being watchable again. I just hope the 9ers can find a groove and play some solid ball that would make me happy and I really don’t mind listening to em on the radio and do other things at the same time.

  17. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

They didn’t win? Keep snorting the koolaide, Skeebie. That’s the funniest thing you’ve ever posted. Didn’t take you for a right-wing nut-job, but if the foo shits . . .

The NFL would NEVER allow this to go to trial. The shit that would have been dragged into the light would curl your non-existent pubes.

The timing of the ‘report’ about Kappy wanting $22 mill to play in the AAF comes a DAY before the NFL announces they paid huge sums of money to Reid and CK? Hmmm, methinks I smell a rat. I mean, you guys still think there’s a child slavery ring on Mars run by Hillary, but you can’t connect 2 dots 5 inches away from each other. Hilarity.

AAF? My opinion? Yeah, their stunning crowds of 9,000 folks is such a refreshing change to the NFL. It’s the USFL, it’s the XFL. It’s NFL Europe. It will quickly die off like all the other upstart leagues. You think the NFL can take on 5-6 new teams? Right. What is the end-game of the AAF? To survive outside the NFL? Or to be subsumed by them?

At least I can make a prediction and stand by them NoFear. You can’t. “They’ll be between 6-10 and 10-6!” Classic, NeFear. Hyyuk! NoFear thinks that Hillary is sending microwaves to his grandma’s basement trying to get him to adopt a transgender puppy. Time to change the tinfoil on your ceiling.

Psychotic Rants, Inc. checks in again, full of sound and fury and insults, signifying nothing but the fascinating malfunctions that occur when a donkey brain is placed inside an otherwise human type entity. Victor Frankenstein would be quite pleased.

Oh, and I trashed your political rant. Those are a no-no, Chuckie.

  19. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

I was tempted to edit out all your insults, Chuck, but then realized there wouldn’t be anything left that resembled a coherent thought. Still, that might be amusing. I’ll wait for your next tirade.

  20. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Hopefully they can agree on a contract but Niners are prepared to use their franchise tag on Robbie Gould

Gould is one of the most reliable kickers in the League with 55 yard range and should get paid to stay. pinion not so much.

Antonio Brown might be the most talented receiver in the league but he’s really going off the rails and is on the same track T.O. took which means having him on the team is a cancer and will destroy any chemistry you’ve established.

AB wants a raise and more guaranteed money and wants to be known as “Mr Big Chest”.

No matter how talented I don’t want this fool on the team. It will always be him before the team and he’ll throw teammates under the bus.

  23. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Bullit, agreed om WR assessments. AB and OBJ agents look at our cap and start their drooling and PR shenanigans.

Lucky for us Shanalynch is only year 3 of their deal and can stay away from short term roster adjusting to salve their job uncertainty.

See them trimming AA any number of ways. Rather have the youngsters KStreet or QWilliams at big end with rookie contracts.

Any big spends probably an Anthony Barr or CJ Mosley. FA starts in 3 weeks and draft in two months. See how many FA bidding wars we engage in.

    Good stuff coming.

  24. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Two lower priced free agent LBs that Lynch might consider are Jordan Hicks of the Egos and Jake Ryan of the Packers.

“Jordan Hicks has played a huge role on the Philadelphia Eagles defense the past few seasons, and when he is healthy, he is one of the more productive linebackers in football. Last season, Hicks played in only 12 games, but still managed to rack up 91 tackles, and had a career-high three sacks.”

Jake Ryan tore his ACL and is coming back from injury. He was a very productive LB before getting hurt and would be an improvement over the incumbent Malcolm Smith.

Actually preston smith nothing special. Worse combine than soloman thomas. Also has that lack of quick twitch. NO on this FA.

Getting back to our oline unknowns. Have to believe these two are future starters for us, just need to be coached up. Read the comets at this link and the PFF link.

At worse Garnett gets traded and Coleman goes to OG.

  27. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Keep an eye on Connor McGovern next week. 6’5″ 323 OG may be OZ capable, pass pro seems OK and he is mobile. May have been at Senior Bowl, Penn state

    Garrett Bradbury another Weston Richburg?

If we decide to go FA for one of the new edge’s he would be pricey but may be a SAM along with edge.

Are you OK? Feb 19 6:03pm you posted

“Actually preston smith nothing special. Worse combine than soloman thomas. Also has that lack of quick twitch. NO on this FA.”

Have you changed your mind AGAIN?

  32. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

    Anything goes on draft day.

I know you do not want the DT QWilliams with the first pick. Here is a scenario I like tho.

ARI is going to a 3-4 D. They have no intention of trading down. They swap with us, #2 plus AA for #1. AA can be good rotational depth and eventual starter at RDE. We get a definite path on pass rush intentions. Deal announced at start of FA.

We take Preston Smith for SAM/edge, assuming since an OLB he can handle SAM pass coverage duties on base downs. Thomas is kept at LEO/edge.

QWilliams at #2. If there is an acceptable LEO candidate with the second pick then FO could take it. So we end up with QW at big end/nickel DT and a killer interior pass rush necessitating one-on-ones for both edges, elevating their marginal edge rush.

If the second pick develops then Thomas can be traded later. Or if second pick goes for non pass rush we are giving Thomas a second chance to become adequate at LEO/edge.

Thomas trade value not good so we salvage something.
