Buzzkill Edition

We’re a week and a half into the offseason, and no 49er player has yet been arrested. Super Bowl here we come!

There seems to be a ground swell of optimism forming for the 2019 season, unlike any season in, well, never. For some reason, despite history and every lesson to the contrary, football fans seem to be constantly enthused that their team is going to be terrific the following season.

Last offseason, these optimists were wetting their knickers at the prospect of Jimmy Garoppolo leading the team to or very near the playoffs in 2018. That dream was squashed in the third game when Jimmy tore his ACL. As you can see from the Prognostications listings, one of those optimists was yours truly.

Now, we’re right back at the same space, expecting the same great things as we expected last year.  A bit of an offseason rerun. Still, it might be pointed out that Nick Mullens played eight games and finished as the seventh rated QB in the league in terms of average passing yards per game. Better than Garoppolo, in that regard. And yet, Mullens record was only 3-5.

There were a lot of injuries this year, but aside from Garoppolo’s, none of the injuries involved a major player. That’s because the team has no major players. There’s George Kittle and Deforest Buckner and nobody else. And neither Kittle nor Buckner were injured. Jerick McKinnon might have looked like a big loss at the beginning of the season, but how much more productive would he have been compared to the year Matt Breida had?

It’s tempting to claim Marquise Goodwin and Dante Pettis were major players who got injured, but neither has been healthy enough to yet be considered major players and being injured was a fairly constant condition last year.

At the least, the team needs a functioning secondary, a pass rusher, a healthy number one WR, and an O-line upgrade to make much of a push up the ladder of respectability.

On the plus side, though, the bar has been set so low by four consecutive very bad seasons, that nobody remembers how good the Niners used to be. A 7-9 or 8-8 season would probably cause hearts to tremble lovingly, but that was the expectation of most for last year. And is that really much of an improvement for year three?

The buzz on sportstalk radio is the Cards trading Josh Rosen and taking Kyler Murray with the #1 pick. That story is on fire on various platforms.

Works for me and puts the Niners in a way better position in the draft.

Schefter at ESPN is floating that possibility

Fanpost for LAR OL with ALY and PFF grades. Excellent OT work. They got lots of rushing yards against us, last game without Gurley.

Rams rushed for 152 yards on 42 carries. Niners rushed for 127 yds on 22 carries. Niners total offense 391 yds to Rams 377

What game were you watching? Points were scored on Niners off gift turnovers.

152 yds is not a lot of rushing yds when your own team has 127 but what do I know.

    Too much propaganda.

  5. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

Oh, Skeebs. You were so pessimistic at 10-6 last year. Boo hoo.

And, Brieda isn’t the pass catcher out of the backfield that McKinnon is. They built the offense around McKinnon’s capabilities and that never materialized.

As far as that Ram game went, we did get a lot of garbage time yards.

Point is still vaild though that we need to do about 1000x better at not turning the ball over. And 1000x better at creating turnovers.

  6. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Jimmie Ward cost the Niners $8m plus last season.
If they extend an offer to Earl Thomas for 4 years $50 mil with $20 mil guaranteed they might be able to lock him up and it will solve a major problem in the back end of the defense. With Thomas and Sherman they can start grooming players to eventually replace them.

Thomas’ salary was $2 m more than Ward’s last year. Both were hurt but it’s night and day in their ability.

Not signing Armstead and Ward would free up cap space to sign Earl Thomas. It also gives the young guys like Kentavius Street and Julian Taylor to show their stuff.
Street was a formidable Dlineman that played beside Bradley Chubb before he got hurt.

  7. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

Lose Earl Mitchell and AA, draft an edge rusher, and hope K Street can bring it from the other side, and we’ll be in very good shape.

The Bears went from 5-11 to 12-4 by simply adding Khalil Mack. Pas rush is our first, second, and third priority.

  8. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

No DB’s in this draft! Develop Witherspoon and TMoore for boundary CB starters and Colbert for FS. Earl Thomas and Sherman is enough with no draft capital spent.

Those three have all the physical attributes wanted for our scheme. Develop and add depth in 2020 or later draft.

  9. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Bonus of having first two picks as pass rushers means no big money guarantees on old FA’s at one of the highest paid positions.

Curious on FA and draft for IOL OZ capable with size for pass pro. So big FA contracts for FS and IOL coming our way.

  10. bullitNo Gravatar says:

So Pro Football Focus has Jalen Ramsey as the 24th ranked CB.

This is the guy you wanted to trade Jimmy G for?

Talk about being overrated and he has a big mouth to boot.

PFF says he regressed more than any other CB on their list.

  11. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Just like Josh Norman with the big mouth and got paid the big bucks but is nowhere to be found as an elite corner.

Kareem Jackson is listed as the 4th best corner on the list and he was being torched by Andrew Luck last game.

No way I want Ramsey on the team because he’s highly overrated
and likes to talk but can’t back it up.

Really getting interesting around the machinations revolving around #2. 4 pass rushers seem to be a consensus from what I read. Nick Bosa/Clelin Ferrell/Josh Allen/QWilliams needs to be heavily scrutinized till draft day 1.

Not just athletic performance but character. Aldon and Reuben are quite the learning experience. Invest in pass rush consultants seems a good move.

Do not want to get cute in trade downs and lose all 4. If QWilliams chosen early then 2nd needs trade up for a quality edge.

A well thought out scenario is here.

Poor performance of the DB unit cost Hafley his job. Lack of turnovers, in fact a record of 2, sealed the deal.

Poor performance of the DL unit cost Zgonina his job. Lack of pass rush from AA and Thomas sealed it. I joked in the past that Kap is a QB coach killer. Thomas may be a DL coach killer in training. Lynch has his back.

What we have now is a really good base SDE in Armstead at $9M currently and a guy I think could be expected to bounce back in Thomas at $7.6M next year.”

Thomas in year 3 of his 1st contract makes 7.6 mil, gulp.

Of course it’s child’s play to try enough word forms to get one by the rules filter. If it was me I’d take it as a big ePH You! and ban the rule PHlaunting PHuckers, but bullit enjoys special immunity or impunity or sympathy, whatever.

It’s funny that Philly fans thought Foles (with lotsa help from the zebras) would deliver them regardless. Wentz was far better but may never recover his old form after injury/rehab, much like Garoppolo’s situation for that matter. As much mental as physical.

    Philly’s Pholes Phalls Phlat.

Did not know who the Niner Dline coach was until he was fired. Do not know this new guy they’re bringing in. Do know that they hired Chris Kiffin as a pass rush specialist and he’s still around (hopefully on a short leash).

Bryant Young has been the Falcons Dline coach for the last couple of years. Would be a popular move if he was added to this coaching staff as he could teach much on and off the field.

  31. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“That would lead you to believe that NoPhear was related or Flying V had something over him.”

Flying V was posting anti 49er almost as much as Delmar Dennis.
For me football is entertainment and not life or death. The extreme view of Flying V was the Yorks stole the team and didn’t deserve to exist on the planet.

He would post indefensible extreme stuff like he hoped that the Yorks plane would crash so the team would get new ownership.

There is a reason why Flying V, Dennis and Splitblood are banned from almost all the Niner blogs because they chose not to follow any rules.

Anyway Go Aints! Phuck the Rams!

AS much as Antonio Brown is a great receiver I’m not able to overlook his “diva” attitude and how it impacted the Steelers in the leadup to a crucial game must win for a playoff spot.

Jerry Rice sure wants Antonio Brown in a Niners uniform and is lobbying hard for him on the radio.

    https://www.sacbee.com/sports/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/article224528135.html

Antonio Brown is going to run the Hills with Rice. Where have I heard that before? Oh Yeah Rice was going to tutor AJ Jenkins
and take him to the hill. That never happened and Jenkins was one of the all time busts in 49er history. Rice likes to talk and see his name in print but hasn’t followed through as promised.

    https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/05/07/jerry-rice-will-take-a-j-jenkins-to-the-hill/

I’m skeptical on the price in draft picks that the Steelers would want, the salary Brown will command and how he’ll fit in. Brown will be 31 in Jul and might be on the downside of his career strapped with a huge contract. Behavior wise he’s no angel in the locker room or towards his team mates.

  35. winderNo Gravatar says:

  37. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Niners hired another coach today besides then aforementioned Kocurek.

    F

“On Tuesday, the 49ers hired defensive line coach Kris Kocurek, 40, who had the same role with the Dolphins in 2018. They are also expected to hire former Broncos defensive coordinator Joe Woods, 48, as their defensive passing-game coordinator, although Woods has not signed a contract.’

  39. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bullit there’s some noise around Pitt possibly looking to restructure their Cap, to make ABs money situation more palatable, to a potential Trade partner.
I would refrain from dealing any Picks unless, (and until), Draft weekend, in the hopes that Lynch might parlay Pick 2 into additional ammo.
AB would be an instant improvement for Shanny.
I would float an exchange of Contracts, perhaps Arik for AB?
I see Pick 2 as potential reason to gamble for Lynch. If enough is offered to slide back, I believe there’s enough DE depth to potentially accept additional Picks for maybe taking that chance.

AB isn’t worth parting with the limited number of Picks we’re holding now IMO.

  40. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Bruce Arians commented on Antonio Brown and called him a diva and changed since he last coached him as the Steeler OC for AB’s first 2 years. He wouldn’t want him on his new team, the Bucs.

AB has morphed into TO 2.0 caught up in complete narcissism.

If the Cards want to pull off something really big they could package
Josh Rosen, David Johnson andFitzgerald in return for Antonio Brown and a newly signed Le’veon Bell because they franchise tag him to keep his rights and then work out a trade and a contract to make him the highest paid rb in football. Cards get rid of Rosen to clear the way for drafting Kyler Murray and end up with two of the best offensive weapons who were headaches for the Steelers. Steelers end up with their QB of the future, a top five RB and a HOF WR who played at Pitt.
This would be a win win for both teams and a possible win for the Niners. Pure speculation on my part here.

  41. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Fun to speculate at this point in the season. What else is there when you’re holding the 2nd Pick in the Draft again?
Hence my reason for gambling with the Pick in the first place.
Doesn’t hurt to have some thoughts on what might happen….

    https://tinyurl.com/yd94xc2p

  42. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

I just can’t see AZ making the Pick after landing Rosen last year.
Murray is a small guy to begin with and, their OL isn’t exactly something to protect the investment, as it were.
I can’t see an OT in this class going in their slot either, though I’d like it to happen.

They’ll likely get a ton of Trade calls however, since they’ve already got Rosen on the roster.

Flacco/Foles and Manning will likely be on the move too.
I could see Haskins here with the NYG, though I doubt they’d pony up much to get to Pick 1, we’ll see?

  43. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

I’m waiting to see the actual bio of DE Rashan Gary from MI.
    Haven’t seen him play but, he’s listed at 6’4″/280 with a 4.65 40 time.
If that’s true, he’s VERY fast for being that size.
    He’s only a JR too.
Clelin is pretty quick for a bigger DE too, but he’s listed at 6’4″/260 with a 4.70.

  44. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

The pass defense last season was too passive evidenced by their 2 INTs and discrepancy in creating turnovers. If nothing else I hope coach Woods teaches them to gamble more and make it a priority to strip balls and fumbles.

  51. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

Kliff was high on Murray when he was coaching Texas. Kliff may want his guy in there, and trade Rosen for more picks. It certainly isn’t out of the realm of possibility, NJ.

Rosen has looked OK, but except for Fitzgerald, they have a similar problem as us. Little around him.

  52. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

Bullitt, when Saleh went to more man coverage, the pass defense improved by a decent margin. At least we weren’t leaving guys unaccounted for by 25 yards. And our DBs dropped a good 5 or 6 easy picks in the process.

Still and all, a solid pass rush leads to INTs. We don’t have that. That is the bioggest need by a longshot.

  53. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

Bullitt, are you really blaming Rice for not turning Jenkins into an NFL WR? Because they didn’t run together?

Methinks the blame falls on Jenkins, not Jerry.

  54. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Chuck

Kliff didn’t coach at Texas. It was Texas Tech.

As far as Jerry goes he’s been talking about running the hills
for the last couple of decades. That’s his schtick. With Jenkins it never happened.

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d828f8c98/article/jerry-rice-preps-49ers-rookie-aj-jenkins-for-run-on-the-hill

Rice was also on the radio talking about trading for OBJ so you have to take everything he says with a grain of salt because there’s no basis for what he’s suggesting.

  55. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Charlie the Rosen proposal for Murray is someone Bluto Keim could entertain, certainly.
    Question becomes cost.

  56. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

NJ, Wentz flew up the draft board for no particular reason beyond one GM’s love for a guy. Kliff Klavin could very well be enamored with Kyler. Prolly not, but hey, it’s always fun to speculate.

And there’s that Bluto Keim again!

Rosen is a fairly unknown commodity at this point. For that matter, so is Jimmy G. But look at the deals these QBs get. Backup, starter, or otherwise.

So, Bullitt, what are the specifics? Did Rice not show up at the appointed time to run the hill with Jenkins? Did AJ not show up? Inquiring minds want to know. Ooops. I left off ‘Tech’. Did Kliff coach against Murray in college? Did Kilff say he admired Murray’s ability?

    https://pbs.twimg.com/ext_tw_video_thumb/1056683173243871232/pu/img/5e5XFownmKEj-c_9?format=jpg&name=medium

Of course he could have been just gushing . . .

  58. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

“I’d take him with the first pick in the draft, if I could,” Kingsbury told communications staffers at Tech. “I know he’s signed up to play baseball, but he’s a dominant football player. I would take him with the first pick.”

  59. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Cards screwed their pooch by hiring Kliff.
Similar move would be hiring Lane Kiffin.
Kliff was fired for having a crap record at his alma mater and the Cards think that highly of a losing record in college and hand the team over to him.

If they liked this offensive style the guy they should’ve hired was Rick Leach at WSU

As for Rice he has been talking about the hill every time he gets on the radio, He has said almost the exact same thing
for Antonio Brown that he said for Jenkins.

Antonio Brown is talented but has a mentality like TO and will really screw with team chemistry.

Wonder why the Giants couldn’t win with Barry? Because it was always about Barry before the team.

  60. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

Wow. You know everything, don’t you, Bullitt? I have no idea what Kliffy will do, nor do I really care, but you think Rick Leach is a better answer? Why didn’t they talk to you about it?

You didn’t answer the question. Did Rice not show up, or did AJ not show up? Does Jerry still run the hill? I mean, you obviously talk to him all the time.

Beyond that, the Giants didn’t win with Bonds because Russ Ortiz begged out of game 6 with 5 outs left. The bullpen, which Dusty rode into the ground, couldn’t get 5 outs. Robb Nen was pitching the 2nd half of the season with a hurt arm and never threw a meaningful pitch after game 6 of the 2002 WS.

Barry built the new ballpark. Without Bonds, the Giants are in Tampa Bay.

I don’t pretend to know everything but if you have been paying attention the hiring of Kingsbury has garnered the same reaction from media and the NFL as when Niners hired Tomsula.

Oops, sorry about that. I forgot you were all in in getting rid of Harbaugh and thought Jimmy T would take the team to the playoffs.

IIRC you were also very critical about the W’s canning Mark Jackson and hiring Steve Kerr. How did that work out? You predicted doom for the W’s.

I’m driven by stats for the most part, as I simply don’t have benefit of Scouts doing videotape files on all these guys. YouTube helps a lot however.
High on my list for example, games played.
A clear tell whether a guy plays, or spends time on the injury list. (Jimmy doesn’t pass muster for me there) simply because he got stuck behind Brady and, now gets paid like him.
Doesn’t add up but….maybe we have hope for his emergence as a bonafide starter.
Size/speed, raw numbers (catches/tackles/etc) keep me busy and, scheming for the next Slam Dunk Sleeper 😀
Hate the hype, hate the bust rates.
Sell those top slots and, try to improve your odds, whenever you can IMO.

Especially like agility drills run at the Combine too. Is a guy a good athlete? Or a robot in pads? Each position needs certain skills of course. Like… an OL/DL guy who puts up bench reps. A DB with great speed and, a good Vert, a TE/OT that played basketball, helps with positioning etc.
Senior Bowl is intriguing simply because you can see which guys are determined to play as a Pro and will accept the Coaching. Very few of the Primadonas do this week in Mobile. Sure, injuries cost a ton of money, I get it.
But, I appreciate the kids that simply want to prove their worth to Coaches/GMs, not Agents.

I’m just a GM wannabe at heart I ‘spose? 😀

I would pay a lot of attention to the guys who show up and play. You can bet Lynch and Shanny will be doing a lot of talking and taking notes.

  69. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Great consolation prize for holding the 2nd Pick Winder. You get the chance to work with potential Draftees in January 😀
    Can’t hurt.

  70. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

Actually, no I wasn’t Bullitt. WTF are you talking about? Oooh. Did I say something 6 years ago that was critical of Kerr?

Are you holding onto it like a beacon of your blog wisdom? A gotcha moment you can gleefully trot out to, uh, 12 guys on this blog?

Wow. I didn’t know how important all this was to you. Have at it. Break out some 8 year old posts, skippy. Prove your keyboard manliness. Jesus. Get a grip.

  71. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

Bullitt spends all day scanning old threads for things to wave in people’s faces?

    Wow. SAD!

  72. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Chuckles

Then truth hurts. When you say something you own it. If I’m making it up refute it if you can.

Are things that boring in your Pyongyong Fairyland Blog? Population of 5? Ouch.

  73. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bullit your guy Ximines will be working with Shanny and Staff in Mobile.
Looking forward to seeing what he’s all about –

He’s listed with a 4.85/40 which isn’t terrible, if he’s got strength and quickness to compensate.
Hoping to see Jachai Polite in Indy – He’s about the same size (6’2″/242) as Ximines, with a 4.65/40 attached to him at this point –

DEs need those long arms to handle OTs and, quickness to get around them. Speed helps but, isn’t a deal breaker, if their motors are good.
Rashan Gary is another guy I want more familiarity with –
Lot’s of talent coming out at this position in April.

Senior Bowl – South Team DE Group –

    Anthony Nelson, Iowa, 6-7, 271
Jaylon Ferguson, Louisiana Tech, 6-5, 262
    Carl Granderson, Wyoming, 6-5, 261
    Jonathan Ledbetter, Georgia, 6-4, 280
Montez Sweat, Mississippi State, 6-6, 245
Oshane Ximines, Old Dominion, 6-4, 255

  74. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

Where’s your blog, Bullitt? You would do worse than Spitty. Oh, that;s right. You ride others coattails. And come up with 5-10 aliases to back yourself up.

    Jesus. Get a life.

What have I said about Kerr? I was no big fans of Jackson and Kerr had no experience as a head coach, but as a playr, GM, and front office guy, he was successful. I don’t recall anything noteworthy that I said about Kerr. Do you have some phucking post that is some kind of GOTCHA you can spring? Wow. SAD!!!

I remember you saying you loved Joe Thomas and Fred O’Conner. That you though OJ was framed. Everyone is right and everyone is wrong. Here and everywhere else. Big whoop.

Why do you feel the need to act like a 12 year old girl with a secret?

  75. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Chuckles

Time to grow up and go back to cricketville uh I mean Pyongyong Fairyland.

Now you’re making shit up about Joe Thomas. I say bullshit. Prove it.
    That’s how you refute something.

Everyone can read Chuckles like a book when he starts coming up with the 12 year old girl insults. Still have no respect for your daughters, wife, mother or sisters? You are one strange dude.

As for Kingsbury which you claim not to care about, he has much to do as to who the Niners might draft because he drafts one spot ahead of the Niners. But again you stick you foot in your mouth and then stick your head up your ass. Nobody asked you to butt into the discussion but you did so like a bull in a china shop because you think you’re the expurt with a blog who spends more time here than on cricketville.

    NJ

The East West Shrine Game is on NFL Network this Saturday.

Not the talent level of Senior Bowl but some worthwhile players that might be sleepers.

    https://www.shrinegame.com/

Kris Nelson the DT/NT from Texas is playing in this game. If you liked Poona Ford last year this is his twin and would be a steal as a 6th round pick.

  77. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Hoping to get it on the DVR Bullit – Thx.
Shanny will have an up close week with MS State Center Elgton Jenkins (6’4″/310) in Mobile too.

His bio reads well and, he faced some top talent in the SEC.
His 40 numbers are somewhat scattered but, he’s said to move well.
Another guy I’m hoping to ‘Scout’ during the practice week.
Beauty of the situation for Shanny, is the ability to set up practice battles all week. 😀

  78. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

I also like the OG from Oklahoma, Dru Samia, (6’5″/303) who also got assigned to Shanny & Co.

  79. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Shanny also gets top ranked PK Cole Tracy from LSU.

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm?????????????????

    Projected Round (2019): 4-6.
12/22/18: The graduate transfer Tracy has been excellent for LSU this season, nailing a lot of clutch field goals, including going 5-for-5 to help the Tigers pull off an upset over Georgia. In 2018, Tracy is 25-of-29, with all but one of his misses coming in the 50-plus-yard range. His long is 54 yards. He also hasn’t missed an extra point.

Prior to playing for LSU, Tracy was one of the top kickers in Division II. He won the award for the best kicker in Division II for 2017 after he was 27-of-29 in his junior year playing for Assumption College

Gruden got one of ILBs – Germaine Pratt NCST (6’3″/240 – 4.70)

  81. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Watch for this kid in Indy (hopefully) from ND –
Smallish CB with freaky long arms and blazing speed –
Thought he was a Senior until I couldn’t locate him in Mobile –

    Julian Love-CB, Notre Dame
    Height: 5-10 Weight: 189
    Projected 40 Time: 4.40

    Projected Round (2019): 2-3.
1/14/19: In 2018, Love recorded 63 tackles with 16 passes broken up and an interception. He played really well for Notre Dame and was an unsung hero of the defense.

8/29/18: According to NFL team’s preseason data, Love checks in at 5-foot-10, 189-pounds and runs the 40-yard dash in 4.40 seconds. He has 31.25-inch arms, nine-inch hands, and a wingspan of 75.13 inches.

Love had a strong 2017 season for the Fighting Irish, totaling 68 tackles with three interceptions and 20 passes broken up. Because of his size, Love is a better fit as a slot corner. He is very fast with impressive ball skills and instincts.

I hear you like to suck the chrome off trailer hitches. Refute that.
