Last Call For 2018

The 49ers have not won a road game all year. It would be a shame to ruin such a pristine swing and a miss by somehow eking out a victory against the Rams this Sunday in Los Angeles.

After all, 5-11 doesn’t look much better than 4-12 – crap is crap by any other name – and it’s not worth slipping down the 2019 draft board to achieve. Not that these lovable lunk heads will be considering these practical ramifications. No, they just want to win the game and close the season thinking they’re better than they are.

Many of them won’t be starting next year anyway. Nick Mullens will be back on the bench, along with the entire secondary, a couple of RBs, one or two WRs, and probably a linebacker. But at least we’ll have some decent depth next year.

The Rams made a lot of splash last offseason going all in for a Super Bowl run this year, but they’ve kind of faded down the stretch since losing to the Saints last month. Ndamukong Suh was supposed to team with Aaron Donald to provide twin terrors at the DT spots, but only Donald has lived up to his reputation. Suh has played like a faded star who’s run out of gas. CB Aqib Talib has been injured most of the year and the other big splash CB, Marcus Peters, has shown more why Andy Reid traded him than why the Rams wanted him. And this year’s QB Jared Goff has lately played more like his rookie year self than his last year self.

Even so, the Rams are 12-3, which is not too shabby, and will have a first round BYE in the playoffs if they beat the Niners on Sunday or the Bears lose to the Vikings. And the Seahawks will be playing in January, too. While the Niners finish off their fourth straight losing season, a fully accredited Third World entity in the NFC West.

Last game of the year. Sigh. Kind of sad. Sixteen weekends of Munchausen Syndrome and then back to the real world and six months of acute withdrawal. Which is worse? The sickness or the withdrawal?

Rams went all in for this season. Next season they will look quite different as salary cap will be an issue for them.

Like I said before it is wishful thinking that someone will give a 1st round pick for Mullens or giving up Solomon Thomas at this point in his career. Opposing defenses are double teaming Thomas for a reason and this frees up Buckner to wreak havoc. This goes unnoticed on the stat sheet but Thomas has also been setting the edge of his side of the field which i9s key to this defense.

No resting Ram players this game. McVay on lessons learned last season.

Atlanta traded Brett Favre to Packers for first round pick who turned out to be RB Tony Smith.
Niners traded two picks to Bucs for Steve Young. Picks turned out to be Winston Moss and Bruce Hill.

Two Hall of Fame QBs traded for what amounts to a sack of beans.

IMO the notion of trading Jimmy G could be a similar scenario.
My rule is you don’t trade franchise QBs.

Gruden and the Raiduhs just might trade Carr for draft picks. Let’s see what they do with those picks.

Atlanta went with Jeff George instead of Favre and Bucs drafted Testaverde with top pick in draft.

Jeff George was 16-19 as a starter for ATL and Testaverde was 24-48. Both moves led to mediocrity for two franchises and Super Bowl runs for the teams that they were traded to.

Again do not trade a franchise QB IF you have one.

This would be a good move if Earl Thomas has 4 more good years in him as he turns 30 in May. This would improve the secondary without expending draft capital.

I don’t know anyone who thinks we will win this week. I know we are going to try though and this could be a signature game for KS. Personally I would love to see us take out the Rams chances for the #2 seed. I’m sure the players and the FO feel the same way to. A win would be a great way for the Organization to finish out the year.

  6. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

They are going to try. That is all that is asked of your team. They haven’t quit at all and are buying in to Shanny’s plan.

The offense has done pretty well with 3rd and 4th stringers at most of the skill positions, but the red zone problems persist. I’m still more concerned with the defense. The lack of a consistent pass rush is the biggest problem.

Rams announce that Gurley won’t play against Niners.

Aaron Donald needs 3 sacks to tie Strahan for the record at 22.5 for a season

Bullit the QB Trades you cite are great examples of how you don’t know who the Franchise QB is going to turn out to be.
System fits, big arms, good wheels etc.
Snyder sold out for RG III.
    Winner. Rams.
Picks are just as subjective at any position.
Nature of the game. Keeps us engaged too 😀

  9. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

We picked up AA’s 5th yr option. We need flexibility of keeping him tradeable. Should sit against LAR and allow Julian Taylor to get his reps.

    NJ

Rams had quite the haul trading RG3 but they did little with all the draft capital they received and squandered it 3 first round picks and a 2nd rounder

Players drafted by Rams with picks acquired in RG3 trade:

    Michael Brockers (w/ Rams)
    Janoris Jenkins (w/ Giants)
    Isaiah Pead (out of NFL)
    Rokevious Watkins (out of NFL)
    Alec Ogletree (traded to NYG)
    Stedman Bailey (out of NFL)
    Zac Stacy (traded to NYJ)
    Greg Robinson (w/ Lions)

Mullens as I’ve said before is Fitzpatrick, a very smart QB but lacking size and arm talent. I’ve been waiting for Niners to have a franchise QB since Jeff Garcia and I’m not about to trade Jimmy G
because it would be a huge mistake.

  11. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

No more red and gold for Jimmy Ward, Pierre Garcon, Malcolm Smith, and Earl Mitchell.

Will eat any dead money. Clear the decks.

Cannot wait for Sunday night. Final draft order for the non-playoff teams for first 3 rounds very important with our 4th essentially a 3rd.

  12. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

    What a logjam, at DL.

Big End candidates AA, Ronald Blair, KStreet, and Solomon Thomas.

What to do. They are too small for 1-tech, or NT in the 4-3. Too big and immobile for nickel DE. Thomas could be a poor one but may end up there by default.

Why did we draft so many of the same type. We also picked up Sheldon Day after a cap release by JAX.

None of these guys stand out as interior pass rushers. Trade value of all therefore mediocre.

  13. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

This logjam of average, low trade-value Big Ends may cause Lynch and Adam Peters to bypass QWilliams if there at #2.

Unforced error, entirely self-inflicted. First two drafted by Baalke. Solly and KStreet by our entertainer GM Lynch.

Buck stops with him. Always has a smile for the camera’s tho.

  14. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

The only solution I see to alleviate the logjam are player for player trades or as sweeteners to make pick-for-pick trades work.

  15. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

    49ers inactives

    WR Marquise Goodwin
    OL Shon Coleman
    OL Erik Magnuson
    NT Earl Mitchell
    DL Sheldon Day
    S Tyree Robinson
    TE Garrett Celek

  16. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“The Falcons beat the Bucs and the Cowboys beat the Giants. That means the 49ers are locked into pick No. 2 … if they and the Cardinals lose.”

  17. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

Yeah, those Rams suck! Three turnover in the first quarter. That’s how the Niners roll on their way to the draft pick of their dreams. As if they know what to do with it.

  18. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

The Niners would be right in this game if they weren’t getting blown out.

  19. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

If little Dickie Sherman keeps getting burned he’ll have to jump into the middle of a fight or something to get some attention he can brag about.

  20. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

Damn! The boys pulled to within three scores there for a bit. Busy making Goff look like Mahomes now.

If little Dickie Sherman keeps getting burned he’ll have to jump into a fight across the field or something.

  21. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

I guess I should erase the whiteboard between insults to make room for new insults.

Niners packing it in? No sense getting hurt?

    Play for pride now, boys!

  22. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Phuck the Rams. Have had those sentiments since Roman Gabriel and Dick Bass days. Things haven’t changed in 50 years. PHUCK THE RAMS!

  23. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Congrats to George Kittle setting all time receiving yardage record for TEs

    Phuck the Rams!

  24. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

The Rams send their apologies to shrieking little girls everywhere for phinishing in the playophphs.

    Ph-Ophph!

  25. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Per Barrows

    49ers 2019 opponents are set:
In addition to their division rivals, they will visit Saints, Buccaneers, Bengals, Ravens and Washington next season.
They will host: Falcons, Panthers, Browns, Steelers, Packers as well a as well as the Cardinals, Rams and Seahawks.

Also Shanahan has announced Tomlinson most likely tore his ACL

  26. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

    Well, at least it’s over.

Another reason to hate the Seahawks… their last minute win kept the Cardinals from bumbling away the first pick to us.

  27. bullitNo Gravatar says:

So far Jests fire Bowens and Bucs fire Koetter.
    Few more to go.

Cleveland looking to take a shot at Saban.

Fins and Cards thinking about making a change.

GM jobs about to open up too but nobody ever mentions Baalke as a candidate. The whole league knows how bad he was.

  28. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

    Baalke is done Bullit.
Yet, Mike Mayock getting a look-see from Oakland?

  29. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Mayhew was being mentioned as a possibility if Fins dump their GM.

  30. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

I’ve heard Tannenbaum was already released – Ross is all about glitz.
He’s got a all sorts of ‘Partners’ on his Corporate roster already.

Whoever Chris Grier is, he’s listed as the GM?
19yrs with the Club, 3rd as GM. Apparently, he spent the bulk of those earlier years as a Scout.
Which is more than can be said for Tannenbaum.

Tannenbaum was the stooge who put the NYJ in Cap H3LL.
Ross has money however. He won’t be accused of being cheap like some other Owners we know well.

  31. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

No surprise (I guess) that he’s tied to Belichick –
    AFC East stuff….

Grier has worked with several of football’s most successful coaches and executives throughout his career and that has helped shape his football philosophy. His father, Bobby Grier, is the former vice president of player personnel for the Patriots and recently retired as a senior personnel advisor with the Houston Texans. Chris has also worked with and learned under Pro Football Hall of Famer Bill Parcells, Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick, Seattle Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll and University of Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban.

  32. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

One thing I can say in our situation, Paraag knows the Contract Game.
    Tannenbaum? Complete eff’n hack.

  33. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

AA is #2 at big DE per PFF run grades. If that is true this team not big enough for both Thomas and AA.

Will Paraag push the issue of a non-performing high-priced DL and force moves.

  34. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    NJ

Add LB Chase Hansen Utah to your draft list
He was a SS and moved to LB this year
He came to Utah as a QB and was switched to defense.
Only downside is he’s 25 but if he’s there at top of 4th round I’d snap him up.

  35. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Hard to imagine anyone dealing for Thomas in a Draft Class loaded with similar talent.
Quinnen is likely an upgrade to Arik however, who will be on the threshold of a 5th year option before the Draft.
Like Arik over Thomas but….Thomas is ‘newer’ and has time to grow.
    Quinnen could help him.
Oklahoma doubled him all night, and still had him in the backfield most of the time.
See how it goes when Lynch is on the clock.

  36. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Conversely, if they pass on the Option for Arik, he carries a premium Comp Pick, which is likely to be a nice consolation prize.

  37. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

    Will do Bullit.
Lot’s of guys to Scout, which I’m doing now, with the Bowl games going on.
Very good crop of Front 7 talent this Spring.
Waiting for stats to get shared online, as well as Senior Bowl/Combine reviews.

  38. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Seems to be a good pipeline of ‘Tweener’ guys going into those hybrid SS/LB roles in the NFL too.
Caught a couple of guys in the Belk Bowl the other day.
UVA S Juan Thornhill and OL Marcus Applefield.
Marcus played 4yrs at Rutgers and transferred to UVA.
He’s a beast in the weight room and could likely be a nice RG option in the Mid RDs. He played OT as well.
Have to see how he comes through at the Combine.
