At the beginning of the season, nearly everyone figured the 49ers’ record after two games would be 1-1. There were a couple of guys who felt differently, but they have now clunked to the bottom of the “Prognostications” list, where they will remain somewhat ignominiously until September of 2019.
So, here we are at 1-1, but not in the manner most expected. 1-1 was supposed to be achieved despite the heroic efforts of our QB Jimmy Garoppolo. Instead, 1-1 has been achieved despite the less than heroic efforts of JG10.
This is both good news and bad news. The good news is Jimmy will undoubtedly improve. The bad news is maybe he won’t.
This week the Niners travel to Kansas City, which looked like a toss up game at the beginning of the year, but not so much now. It was expectable that their QB Patrick Mahomes would have some growing pains in his inaugural year, and he no doubt will eventually have some, but it might not occur this week and he has had a meteoric first two games. Of course, we all know what happens to meteors in the end — burnt out, cynical and drunk, boring someone in a dark cafe.
We’ve come to expect good offense from KC HC Andy Reid, who’s been wearing out secondaries for many years. Reid’s clock management and defenses, though, have always caused his teams to come up short. His defenses tend to play well in the first half, then collapse in the second half. And his end game clock management boo-boos have achieved an almost legendary status.
Last year, the Chiefs won their first five games, then lost six out of seven, before closing out the season on a four game winning streak, then blowing a 21-0 lead to the Titans in a first round playoff exit.
Reid is almost unbeatable coming off a bye week or an offseason, but neither of those conditions apply to this week’s game. Instead, we have two offensive guru HCs and an old fashioned young guns shootout in store for us. Never mind that the final score will turn out to be 9-6, with all of us shaking our heads and going WTF!
After all, we’re still in the window of early season weirdness games and anything’s possible come Sunday.
Yeah, the only way we beat KC is if they play like we have the last couple of games. Maybe the ball bounces our way.
Law of averages says Mahomes has to come down to earth sometime.
This might be the week he throws 4 picks.
OMG!!! I’m beginning to sound like Rob!
LB corps should be bolstered by return of Foster and Malcom Smith has been cleared to play, FINALLY!
I’m feeling better about our D over theirs.
Mild shootout maybe?
9ers 31
Chiefs 28
Niners will face the worst defense in the NFL in the Chefs
They are dead last giving up an average of 508 yds a game 430 yds passing and 156 yds rushing giving up 32 points on average.
Niner defense ranks 21st giving up 385 yds game (278 pass and 107 rush) and 25 pts a game. Numbers would be much better if they didn’t meltdown against the Lions last week.
On offense Niners average 335 yds a game compared to Chefs at 405 yds
per game. Niners rank 22nd and Chefs 8th
If Niners have less turnovers than the Chefs they win 27-24.
Don’t want to get into a track meet and offensive shootout because the Chefs excel at that. Time to make Mahomes look like a second year QB.
49ers inactives vs. Chiefs
WR Richie James
S Jaquiski Tartt
CB Greg Mabin
G Joshua Garnett
G Najee Toran
T Shon Coleman
DT Jullian Taylor
“Malcolm Smith will start at 49ers SAM LB, Reuben Foster at WILL, Fred Warner at MIKE.”
Heh. Well this is appalling. Not unexpected though.
Never underestimate the ability of an Andy Reid defense to collapse in the second half.
Oh oh:”Jimmy Garoppolo got evaluated and just hopped on one leg down hallway into locker room.”
“The 49ers fear a serious knee injury for QB Jimmy Garoppolo.”
“Kyle Shanahan said the 49ers fear Jimmy Garoppolo tore his ACL. MRI on Monday, per source. “It doesn’t look good,” said one 49er.”
It’s Beathard’s team now for the rest of the year it would seem.
So much for Defense today too.
If Sherm and Jimmy were lost for the duration today, it would seem the prognosis for a winning season did too.
GOOD NEWS: We are probably going to be drafting higher than expected this year.
Well. Shit. Jose Cuervo, You are our only hope.
We are still in a rebuild.
IND FO screwed around with mediocre OG and got Luck damaged. New FO made first two picks OG, Quenton Nelson and Braden Smith.
Will our FO do the same in 2019. Out of top 5 edge only Bosa and Ferrell have size. Other 3 seem skinny or small. If we cannot draft the top 2 then?
Our OG need to pass block and handle OZ so 310 lb to handle bull rush by the Vita Veay’s.
Fortunate for us the Jimmy IR happened after 1 win.
Pass rushers always…
Clelin Ferrell, Ed Oliver and Rashan Gary are on my radar already Bakkentom. Not sold on Bosa but, I’ll admit, I haven’t done a whole lot of research yet.
Can’t have enough angry DL-Men IMO. Pressure from the inside is just as good, so long as you disrupt the pocket.
After that, I’m shopping for a CB and WR.
I’m hopeful that Jullian Taylor will be a steal this year as he gets ‘Coached up’too, maybe some meaningful playing time this year is my hope.
Looking to see more of DE Zach Allen from BC this season too.
Building the trenches has always been a solid philosophy I’ve agreed with.
Protect the QB/Sack the QB
Sad times for us. Some levity pertaining to current events.

Clemson has some studs on their DLine this year.
Any one of them is worth a look IMO come Draft time next year.
RIP 2018 niner season.
Put me down for 3-13 this year. Jimmy elevated the entire team. We lack star power at all O skill positions now. Outside of DeFo the D is average.
Tequila bowl every Sunday. Slam face into bowl and suck. Pack lost their 6 million man today as well. Misery spreads.
I’ve more or less adjusted my optimism toward something more in line with 5-11/6-10 myself
Optimism got a reality check today.
Sad to say…
Thoughts of CJ and the not-so-stellar Defense don’t exactly entice confidence for me.
And I thought our Defense could have stifled a young Mahomes.
Silly me…
New post is up.

Ed Oliver would be the guy I would take.
