There’s a Bar Up Above

Five more weeks of the offseason before we begin to see if Kyle Shanahan can emulate Jim Harbaugh by taking a 6-10 team and turning it into a 13-3 playoff team.

Some might say that’s not a fair contest, since Harbaugh’s team was loaded and this current team is not. There’s only one position on Shanahan’s team that is superior. And that position is kind of a big one — the QB. Harbaugh had Alex Smith and Shanahan has the unbeaten super star in the making Jimmy Garoppolo. Which team would you bet on?

And let’s face it, Shanahan has already bettered the records of Jim Tomsula and Chip Kelly. The next step up the mountain is Harbaugh. That’s where the bar of excellence resides.

There’s Bill Walsh, George Seifert, and Harbaugh. The Mount Rushmore of 49er head coaches. Walsh had Seifert, Seifert had Mike Holmgren and Mike Shanahan, and Harbaugh had Vic Fangio. Kyle has Robert Saleh. Will these two someday join the elite three?

2018 is probably a more critical year for Saleh than Shanahan, who already has a successful NFL resume, albeit only as a coordinator. The defense needs to make significant improvement this year if Saleh wants to make his mark as a superior NFL coordinator and Shanahan wants to be considered a great HC as well as a great OC.

So the 2018 spotlight will be on Saleh’s defense and Garoppolo’s effort to join the elite ranks of NFL QBs. The fate of the franchise rides on the outcome.

IIRC there were many complaints here about Harbaugh’s offense and playcalling with focus on Greg Roman. Some wanted to see quick strike offense that scored in 3 plays rather than the grind it out 7 minute 13 play drives. Those critics called it “Bo Schemblecher offense” equating it to the stone ages. The method to Harnaugh’s madness was this kept the defense fresh and made it more effective because winning time of possession was a cornerstone of the formula.
An offense can’t score if they are on the sidelines.

The method was if your offense was going to score 24 points a game you were going to win most of your games of your defense would only give up 14 a game.

Teams that engage in offensive shootouts week in and week out are fun to watch and good for fantasy football. However thoes e teams are beat borderline playoff teams and hover mostly around being .500 teams. There is much to be said that the old adage “Defense wins Champions” is a proven truism in football.

“However thoes e teams are beat borderline playoff teams and hover mostly around being .500 teams”

Should read “However those teams are at best borderline playoff teams and hover mostly around being .500 teams.

    Need to caffeinate before typing.

Remember Steve Logan the QB coach under Jimmy T who was a radio talk show host before he worked here?

He has resurfaced as a OC for Birmingham a franchise in Alliance of American Football which starts next year as a developmental league.

Logan was brought in to turn Kaepernick around which didn’t happen
and Logan went out with Jimmy T as a one year experiment followed by Chip Kelly’s lone year of failure.

bullit= I don’t know anyone who would like to see a three dowm score on a regular basis. I still think the running game is the most important aspect of football. Harbaugh was great at running the team with Gore as the bell cow. Smith and Kap were rarely capable of going for the fast strike. I think what KS is doing so far is getting our running game to a point where defense’s have to respect it. The way it seems to be shaking out is this team will have a far more dynamic offense than any of Harbaugh’s. It is the defense that is gonna have to answer the call and that looks like a good possibility. We need another Cowboy on the team.

  5. Uncle ChuckNo Gravatar says:

The problem with the Harbaugh offense was the inordinate stalled drives inside the 20. We attempted more FGs than any other team from 2011 to 2014. Sure, St. jim saw the talent drain and split when the time was right (hello Michigan), but his offense WAS more akin to Singletary’s Gore left, Gore right, Gore up the middle. Great between the 20s but the red zone O sucked. No one, even back then, was saying Mouse Davis. Just a quicker pace. Quicker getting plays off, more running out of spread formations, quick passes to the flat with Gore. Conflating this with run ‘n’ gun is what folks around here did.

One thing Nolan/Sing did that Harbaugh abandoned was passing to Gore out of the backfield. A return to that is where this team is going with KcKinnon. We seem to have some solid, if not spectacular. WRs now, and a much better offensive mind, so I think this team is poised for a solid year.

  6. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The offense that Shanahan uses will be more diverse and less smashmouth.

Chip Kelly and his so called 100 play a game offense wasn’t meant for the NFL otherwise he’s still be coaching in this league.

Proof was if you didn’t get a first down and you only took 20 seconds off the clock your defense is in for a clusterph*ck with three and outs.

  7. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

Hard not to notice the stink of hypocrisy from someone who comes on here daily to cry about any commentary the least bit critical of the team while spewing nothing but criticism and lies about the Niners coach who won more games than any coach in the league in his first three years.

Now the narrative is Harbaugh quit? Seems to me that’s the opposite of what actually happened.

  8. Uncle ChuckNo Gravatar says:

What a cheese puff, NoFear. Michigan was the job Harbaugh dreamed of when he was a child. This isn’t an alt-fact. It is the truth. He moved as close as he could to BO Schembechler’s house in Ann Arbor. If you can’t connect the dots that led Harbaugh to his dream job then you are a terrible conspiracy theorist.

Do you think St Jim noticed the drafts that Baalke was making? Do you think as a head coach and lifelong football guy that maybe Harbaugh had an inkling that Trent was blowing the picks? Or do you think that little of Harbaugh’s football acumen? The point being the team went of the rails riiiight after Brady Hoke was let go by Michigan.

Sure, it might be coincidental, but the facts are Harbaugh did all he could to piss off the 49ers front office in his last season as the head coach.

And try to post without being such a candy-ass. You act like our GD president. Butt-hurt by anything and everything.

  9. Uncle ChuckNo Gravatar says:

Still flip-flopping on Young Sir Alex? Or have you decided yet, NoFear?

Shit, you think Harbaugh is a better coach than George Seifert. I mean, how silly is that? Both were given stacked teams. One won 2 Super Bowls with 2 different teams, and one saw the writing on the wall and split.

Put it this way, NoFear. Say you told your CO “You are a pussy. This is a place for men.” Would that do well for your status? What was St Jim trying to accomplish there? Getting a big deal? Right. And I have some acreage on the Moon I can sell you.

Look, I don’t blame Harbaugh for leaving, but I’ve said ALL ALONG that he left for his own personal reasons (MICHIGAN), not some nefarious plot by the front office over the power struggle between Baalke and Harbaugh, or the fact we wouldn’t give him $50 mill to coach here. He saw the team was bleeding talent and left. Plain and simple.

don’t even bother to answer, MoFear. Because you never do. You simply spew your narrative and disavow the facts. Bravo.

  10. bullitNo Gravatar says:

IIRC Harbaugh was pushing for a raise and a contract extension and more say in personnel decisions but Jed sided with Baalke which turned out to be a horrible choice and shot the team back to a 2 win season and the head coaching carousel.

Let’s be clear, Michigan pursued Harbaugh as well as other teams. Harbaugh was in demand and NFL teams were offering to trade draft picks for him. At the very least Harbaugh deserved a pay bump after leading the team to 3 NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl.
Harbaugh had an agent who did what any good agent would do, he put out feelers just in case the Niners wouldn’t budge and it came to pass.

As I recall the anti Harbaugh crowd here said they welcomed his departure and the Niners would be better off without him. We know how that turned out.

I am still convinced that if Harbaugh stayed Patrick Willis and Justin Smith would’ve played another year because they could see the team had another run in them. Once Harbaugh was dismissed and the coaching staff was in upheaval Cowboy and Patrick decided to hang it up because they saw the shitstorm dumpster fire ahead.

There are wild conspiracy theories out there and saying orchestrated his departure is one off the wall one worthy of many tinfoil hats.

  11. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

LOL! My comments weren’t about Harbaugh, they were about your hypocrisy and lies. eg: (besides the “St Jim” horseshit) “We attempted more FGs than any other team from 2011 to 2014.”

While that may have been true for 2011 and 2012, two years we went to the conference title games and one super bowl making it impossible to argue the success of the strategy, possibly to compensate for the less than stellar QB performances with a trusted perennial pro-bowl kicker, and maybe should have had one more attempt, it’s altogether false beyond that.

I recognized long ago that any level of intellectual discourse is beyond your mental capability so my post was meant more as an observation for other readers but it was kinda hilarious watching your head explode in your well-known style of baby fit at reading anything you don’t like.

Maybe try basing your opinions on facts instead of emotions once in a while anyway, and at least not stating your wild rantings as if they were facts.

Also hilarious, your requisite knock on Trump, completely unrelated to anything, whilst taking your marching orders directly from Auntie Maxine. Strictly barnyard.

  12. Uncle ChuckNo Gravatar says:

The talent left as well as the head coach, Bullit. Bill Walsh couldn’t have won with the 2015 team. It was akin to the 1979 team in level of talent by the time Harbaugh left. Very few skill players worth a damn and the loss of Willis were big deals.

I was glad to see St Jim go, sure. I don’t think he’s got what it takes to go all the way in the NFL. Like Young Sir Alex, he’s not quite enough on his own to elevate a team to the promised land. And Roman was no holiday as the OC. But be that as it may, the team was going through the convulsions of a team bleeding talent, drafting shit, firing myriad coaches, and no clue from the front office.

Try to be original at least, NoFear. Gawd, you are a 9 year old. You can’t even comment on my points. You just act like a baby. Call your boss a pussy and see what his reaction is. Well, your nanny.

  13. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Very few skill players worth a damn? Chuck, you were one of the biggest Kap suckers on the blogs. Yet you whitewash him out in your arguments here. You labeled us racists for recognizing the truth about the highly paid franchise quarterback.

Jimmy did pretty good with a cast of weak skill players. Trent Brown IR’d, IOL below average, and Hyde could’nt pass block. He stood in despite big hits and commanded an offense, learning the playbook in weeks.

Contrast that with your boy wonder. OC dumbed down the plays so much the Cards D knew everything that was coming. 15 straight run plays to finish out the half. OC knew the gig was up.

Remember on their own 1 yard line and both WR’s jumping and waving hands and Kap still had blinders on. D had all DB’s in the box, confident roboQB would do as planned in the huddle.

Jimmy stood in the pocket, with eyes on the receivers. Letting plays develop and finding open receivers, sometimes nothing there and having to throw them open. Amazing he did not get IR’d with some of those hits. Kap cowardly bailed, the stupid pussy.

    Can’t rewrite history here.

  14. bullitNo Gravatar says:

“I was glad to see St Jim go, sure.”

Yes I recall you were also on board and delighted with the hiring of Jimmy T and Chip and we know how that turned out.

I know you were a “Baalke guy” and now that he’s been exposed as a fraud you distance yourself hoping nobody noticed.

Saying that Harbuagh didn’t have what it takes when he lost two NFC Chamionship Games by 3 points and 6 points and a Super Bowl by 3 points is pretty short sighted. THere is no denying that under Harbaugh the Niners were Super Bowl contenders and the day he was subtracted plunged the team back into the cellar.

For your own creditbility you have to admit the Niners were better under Harbaugh than when he was forced to leave. If you think Tomsula is the better coach and a winning coach then it just shows how much you know about football and how much you enjoy 2-14

And of course you love to criticize Greg Roman and we all know how the offense fared under Geep Chryst who survived two coaching changes even though the team was 31st in offense.

  15. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

    Forgot to include.

Jimmy courageously did it on his rookie contract from the 2nd rd. Nessa’s muzzie communist was on his extension as the franchise QB.

Still could not take it like a man. Exposed OL to injuries on the improv’s as pocket disappears and leg hits from behind. Still laugh at the bailout where he turned to his right and backward. Staley had steered the edge rusher out of the play. Instead the full speed edge guy pancakes the America hater.

  16. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

    Fact: 41-29

Unconfirmed rumor: “You are a pussy. This is a place for men.”

Fact: Jay Glazer at the beginning of the 2014 season: “I don’t see any way Jim Harbaugh comes back next year as the head coach of the 49ers,” reiterating a point that he’s made since Week 1. “Even if they hoist the Lombardi.”

Complete Nonsense: “The point being the team went of the rails riiiight after Brady Hoke was let go by Michigan.”

Fact: On December 2, 2014, Hoke was fired as Michigan HC.

Utter Nonsense: Harbaugh planned to go to Michigan BEFORE he was essentially fired by York (see Glazer above) a full three months before the Michigan job opened up.

Fact: Any narrative promoted by Chuck is almost always balderdash.

Corollary fact: If you disagree with Chuck, he will ALWAYS swear and cuss at you, in lieu of an intelligent response.

  17. Uncle ChuckNo Gravatar says:

You just can’t help it can you Bullit? Next you’l\l start pulling out Crabtree posts from 2008. Did you disavow Baalke in 2012? 2013? No. It’s called seeing the tree for lack of the forest. Baalke was a highly regarded GM as the team was winning, and McCloughan picks were thriving under Harbaugh. Once they trickled away, what happened? Baalke’s guys didn’t pan out and the team went to shit. You can blame Kap all you want, but most of his weapons were gone. The ones that were supposed to be kept when Kap took the VERY team-friendly deal. As for the coaches, well, what did they have to work with? You talk about football knowledge yet you can’t see what is in front of you. 16 TDs, 4 picks. 2200 yards in 11 games. Spectacular? No. Servicable? Yes. But blame Kaepernick. Sheep. Our defense was last in yards allowed and points allowed. How does it feel to be part of the ignorant masses?

It’s called observation, skippy. Show me where you call for Baalke’s head in 2012. Speaking of Roman, he is a TE coach. His stock has soared since his time here. Amirite?

He and and the 2 Mikes (Teflon Mike Nolan, and Aluminum Mike Singletary) can get together and paint your trailer and regale the old times when Alex Smith roamed the plains, and we told our opponents our game plan.

  19. bullitNo Gravatar says:

So in August 2012 Chuckles was posting that AJ Jenkins was a better WR than “softshell” Crabtree. Chuckles was drinking the Baalke kool-aid

  20. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Reminiscing about the simple times of Jimmy “Hat” Raye III.

KC game, their MLB just looked at the formation and called out the play while Alex was still in mid-cadence. Singletary had quite the rolodex for coaching hires.

Those were the days my friends, I thought they’d never end …

Clown car CS. Actually won more games than either Tomsula or Kelly.

  21. Uncle ChuckNo Gravatar says:

Find it bullit. And I’ll post your VMcD 85 catch 800 yard 15 TD prediction. I told you he wouldn’t put those number up in 3 years. Fricking VD barely put up numbers that good, but our backup TE would? Turns out I was even short on that. LMAO! There’s football knowledge for you.

And NoFear’s classic of ‘We’ll be somewhere between 6-10 and 10-6 prediction.

Hey Skeebs, notice how I wan’t being an asshole toward Bullit’s usual ‘some people areound here predicted . . .’ My answers were to the point and not snarky. To bullit. He gets all squirmy and dickish. With you to feebly prop him up. It’s the human centipede of blogging.

  22. Uncle ChuckNo Gravatar says:

Skeebs, I never disputed the timeline of the animosity between Baalke, Harbaugh, and York. That was a known entity as Harbaugh was angling for a contract extension as early as 2011. Deflecting as usual.

Source: midway thru the 2014 season, York walked into meeting Harbaugh was holding w/ players, & Harbaugh told Jed that the meeting was for “men only”

    — Kyle McLorg (@Kyle_McLorgBASG) June 8, 2015

Dispute that as you will (fingers in ears screaming LALALALALA) but it happened. Many people have verified that story about 25x

Funny thing is, 5 days after the Hoke firing the 7-5 49ers, still in the playoff hunt, lost to the dogshit 2-10 Raiders. They then lost to a middling Charger team at home to take themselves out of the playoffs. the meaningless AZ win got them to 8-8.

You are naive to not even entertain the possibility that the opening at Michigan played a role in how his tenure ended in SF. But then again you don’t have much in the way of imagination. The gyrations you make on some issues are pretzel logic, but this fairly straightforward time line is far-fetched?

    hyuk

  23. bullitNo Gravatar says:

AS I recall Chuckles was on the Baalke side and was in favor of getting rid of Harbaugh which history proves was a moronic move.

Chuckles even went so far as to say the Niners would win more games under Tomsula than Harbaugh would in his first year at Michigan. We know how that turned out.

Harbaugh was a great coach who Chuckles decided to trash by labelling him St Jim.

Isn’t it funny that both Chuckles and Trump love to call people names?

  24. Uncle ChuckNo Gravatar says:

Right, all you need to do is repost old posts. You thought St Jim would have 5 national championships by now.

He’s never gonna get over the hump . In college or the NFL.

  25. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

The Niners were virtually eliminated from the playoffs by the Seahawks before the Raider game, the famous York “unacceptable” tweet game. Sorry, Chuck, but you are wrong again. And you still won’t address the Glazer report three months earlier. You always skip over this in your attempt to spew your false narrative.

Kyle McLorg was not in the meeting room (obviously), and his remark was never substantiated by anyone who was in the room, let alone your baloney “25x”.

And, of course, Harbaugh could hardly have been angling for a contract extension in 2011 because that was the year he was hired.

  26. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Leave the POTUS out of this, Bullit.

  27. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Had to refresh a little bit with a portion of a skeebs post after a SEA game in Nov or Dec 2014. Harbaugh and Roman had to get Kap to handle 3 WR sets and do it as a pocket passer.

The O floundering was all on Kap. DC’s had him figured out.

    Here is skeebs:

Harbaugh staked his 49er career on being able to mold Kaepernick into a potent NFL QB. He had never failed in that capacity before. But this time, he has. When the Niner beat writers are openly mocking the QB’s poor decisions and poor throws via Twitter while the game is being played, you know the problem has become so obvious that only an idiot would continue to insist that the QB is not the problem. There’s no way to design good plays when the QB is incapable of utilizing them.

  28. Uncle ChuckNo Gravatar says:

Wow. You don’t read well do you? Harbaugh started antagonizing York and the front office after his first season. 2011. See where I said that up a few posts? Get it? Harbaugh wanted a contract extension after his first year. I NEVER DISPUTED THE TIMELINE. Duh. By 2013 it was a full blown problem.

Stupidity isn’t a virtue, Skeebs. Yeah, speaking of that Seattle game, we laid down like dogs in that game. I wonder if St. Jim knew that Hoke was on thin ice? Everyone else in the sporting world did.

So, to be clear, Tom, Harbaugh won all the wins , and Kappy lost all the losses.

Wow. Amazing how that works. Did you see Kappy telling the refs on the kickoff return in the super bowl to eat their whistles on the 2 holding calls they missed? Hahaha.

This might as well be Faux News West coast. You guys cannot deviate one iota from the narrative.

  29. Uncle ChuckNo Gravatar says:

In other words, what was the impetus for Harbaugh to call out his owner in front of the entire team?

    To get an extension? Hahahahahahaha!!!

Oh, yeah, Glazer is gold, but any other report is bullshit. Got it.

Spin city. You guys are in overdrive.

  30. WinderNo Gravatar says:

I am glad that 2014-2016 are in the rear view mirror and that is where they will stay. The whole organization was a total mess then and those times will go down just like the 49ers of the late 70’s. Something every fan would like to forget. Even when we went 0-9 I though we played some pretty good ball and that the team was fun to watch. You could just see things were changing. I am kind of curious to see how CJ has progressed. It wouldn’t surprise me if is able to run the team close to where Jimmy G can.

  31. Uncle ChuckNo Gravatar says:

I hope we don’t have to find out too soon, Winder. Things are definitely improving though. Given Beathard some time and I’m sure he’ll be fine but I hope Jimmy G stays upright.

  32. Uncle ChuckNo Gravatar says:

“Let’s all rally ’round the narrative!!!’ Right, Tom?

Jim Harbaugh got the 49ers to 3 straight NFC Championship games. And the players didn’t matter. The fact that all the talent left and all of a sudden it’s the QBs problem. Wasn’t that the narrative the Jed York pushed? Yes it was as a matter of fact. Good to see you supporting Jed. Because Blabbert did so much better. I seem to remember NoFear touting the superb job he would do in AZ. He went 2-3, 6 TDs and 6 picks. What happened there? Blabby’s numbers in SF? 4-9, 17 TDs, 11 picks. But no, those losses were the coaching staff’s fault.

See, Skeebs? You all the guys (?) to jump in and ridicule differing opinions at the drop of a hat.

    The lollipop brigade.

  33. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Chuck, the exodus happened after the 2014 season. Kap had all season to fail with what got them to the top. If there were a few injuries, so what. Capable QB’s overcome the challenge.

As far as the “for men only” remark, was it on tape. What was the context. Small changes from “for the men only” and players and Jed could have misheard it. Maybe journalists wanted a red meat story so they were loose with the facts. Maybe the HC was just stumbling over some words. Who knows.

So the SEA was followed by the OAK which they should have won. Post game interview Kap sounded like a sheepish loser. He knew he failed the time and it showed at that presser.

But you still want to pin the blame elsewhere.

Kap was never cut out to be an NFL QB. It is his fault his career flamed out like it did. Whatever the reason, he never absorbed QB 101. Niners were the first team to have that virtual reality system to help reading defenses.

Why not switch to pro baseball as a pitcher. Or a Hollywood legs model with miniskirt and women’s hosiery. He has no aptitude for anything intellectual. Good enough for a Cali politico.

  34. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Maybe his teammates just gave up on Kap. Have you not read articles like this.

    http://ninerfans.com/49ers-brent-jones-questions-colin-kaepernicks-ability-to-be-super-bowl-winning-qb/

He was never a leader among men. Teammates did not look up to him. Nothing more than a workout warrior, a junk yard dog exposed by DC’s. Once they took away his legs, a loser project that taxed the hell out of the OC and QB coach to make something out of an idiot.

  35. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Was this anything more than hearsay, “for men only”? Was it an FBI plant trying to frame Harbaugh.

“In other words, what was the impetus for Harbaugh to call out his owner in front of the entire team?” Chuck, did Baalke leak this to get rid of Harbaugh. Is anything true. Is this all a conspiracy theory.

What is the source for this quote you keep posting?

I recall you were squarely behind the notion of Martz locking Nolan out of meetings for the offense.

If anything of the sort was actually said I would be inclined to think Harbaugh wanted to keep York from disrupting a player meeting. such as, “this is a meeting for the men.” The “you are a pussy” part was most likely just implied by facial expressions and tone of voice and maybe the odd snickering from those in attendance.

The Chuckles show has returned to this blog because there are crickets chirping on his own NK blog where everyone is like minded and forced to fall in with Supreme Leader Chuckles way of thinking.

You can read Chuckles NK blog for pure comedic entertainment value.
Just a matter of time where he goes back to his blog and toots his horn saying how he schooled everyone here. Talk about someone being unhinged??? Chuckles just can’t help himself.

After Tomsula was hired this is what Chuckles posted

“Don’t kid yourself Grump. This team still has talent. It needs speed. The defense looks to be pretty solid. They just have to be a little more lucky than last year with all the injuries. All this talk about no one wanting to come here is utter horseshit. This is a talented team that underperformed wildly on offense.
BPA works for me though. Provided it is a WR, DL, or OL. Then CB. Repeat as necessary. With 9 picks, we should be in good shape. Baalke needs a solid draft this time around.
Don’t worry about the rest. Skeebs is already blaming this season on next season’s coach.
I mean why else crow about thinking Buffalo will have a better record than the Niners when it just happened?”

There was sure a long line of star Free agents waiting to jump on board the Jim Tomsula bandwagon. And then there were the hordes that wanted to play for Chip.

Hiring Tomsula made guys like Justin Smith and Patrick Willis that the losing was inevitable and the pain of one more year was not worth it so they bailed.

For the record Buffalo won 8 games in 2015 and the Niners 5.

Two days ago Chuckles posted this

“The talent left as well as the head coach, Bullit. Bill Walsh couldn’t have won with the 2015 team. It was akin to the 1979 team in level of talent by the time Harbaugh left. Very few skill players worth a damn and the loss of Willis were big deals. ”

Chuckles having stating contradicting stances? Flip flopping?

Chuckles makes himself a clown because he is still espousing Jed York’s version of getting rid of Harbaugh was for the good of the franchise and Baalke was the architect that built this team that would raise banners. Only Chuckles is able to hammer you with conflicting opinions.

  50. Uncle ChuckNo Gravatar says:

So what happened bulllit? Baalke choked the draft. The team lost

Out of Tomlinson, Garnett, Cooper for an OZ running attack Cooper seems like the best. His MCL surgery was for a sprain so seems like surgery for minor tears at the most. Ninersnation had some gif’s on him, run and pass pro.

  53. Uncle ChuckNo Gravatar says:

From 3 years ago Bulllit? The team had some players, but they weren’t replaced with talent. They were replaced with stiffs. It’s hard to know at the time how bad Baalke’s drafts were. Good enough?

Adam Peters crew got the all 22 on his 13 games and may have decided no need to draft an OG. To get better than the 3 we have would have burned a 1st Rd pick. McGlinchey at #9 meant no draft capital on OG.

Can the other 2 get to the second level like Cooper?

    https://www.prideofdetroit.com/2018/4/26/17280932/2018-detroit-lions-first-round-pick-frank-ragnow

We had to make trade-offs so RT higher priority but imo eventually at C #20 Ragnow and #21 Billy Price will be better than Richburg, limited by his 297 lb size.

  56. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Chuckles

Enough of the double standard and your hypocrisy. You constantly go back in time when it suits you. You can’t have it both ways skippy. HYUK!

Giving what you know now you are still stating that letting Harbaugh go was the right thing to do. You justify that with one simple unproven lie that Harbaugh made a comment in front of the team about York. I say that because only a blogger Kyle McLorg cited one source as saying it did happen. No other journalist has substantiated that statement.
We all know that once Harbaugh was let go the shit hit the fan and the team went 7-25. You obfuscate and say the main reason for the bottom falling out was lack of talent. Unfortunately we all know that’s a false narrative and it has everything to do with front office management and coaching.

Everyone has an opinion and an asshole. The difference is you shove your opinions down people’s throats and can’t handle rebuttals.
Most people with strong opinions can admit they were wrong. You can’t ever seem to man up and say you were wrong.

You cling to Kaepernick still believing he’s the second coming od Montana and not realizing he’s a flawed QB with serious limitations.
When a QB can’t go through progressions and find a third or fourth option then you can’t be effective in the league. You blame all of Kepernick’s limitations on the talent on the team and the lack of coaching. It was reported by Romanowski that Gabbert was spending 5 times more time studying film than Kaepernick was. That is because the Ipad they use monitors this.

Bottom line is Kaepernick is a failed QB that nobody wants despite your fanboy worship of him. Blaine Gabbert keeps managing to land on rosters as at least a backup but where is Kaepernick? He can’t even get an invite to be on a training camp roster at minimum wage. How do you explain that? Teams in need of a QB won’t even touch him with a 10 foot pole. I realize you are Kaepernick’s #1 fanboy but Alex Smith is still a starting QB and Kaepernick is out of football.

Kaepernick fooled Chuckles with his PR campaign that he was traing in Arizona with some high school QB gurus and meeting with Kurt Warner. Turns out Warner spent a couple of hours with Kaepernick and didn’t want toi talk about it afterwards and the same mechanical flaws were there after those sessions.

Chuckles stated that after Harbaugh was let go that talented free agents would still sign on with the Niners. That never happened because players knew that the Niners were dysfunctional and a dumpster fire.

  57. bullitNo Gravatar says:

As for Kaepernick, I hope this puts him in the rear view mirror along with Tim Rattay and Jim Druckenmiller.

Warner states in this article that it would take another 4 to 5 years for Kaepernick to adapt to the NFL. Read it for yourself.

    https://www.mercurynews.com/2016/02/02/kurt-warner-expecting-a-colin-kaepernick-miracle-wasnt-realistic/

The last paragraph is particularly damning.

Keep clinging to being a Kap fanboy and making excuses for him skippy.

OT to replace Staley. But no serious injuries could have Andrew Whitworth longevity to his starter playing days.

    WR1 for upgrade from Garcon.

Edge Rusher 》》》》 Will be first pick in 2019. Some say the top 5 are better than the best of this year Bradley Chubb. May have to use our 1st and 2nd or more to get any of top 5. Here is an early list:

One question mark is can Foster stay healthy and the discipline handed out by NFL which should be 1 or 2 games max based on punishment for Jameis Winston. It could be no games which would be great but Foster has to be more durable or he’s a liability. The other LB spot is Malcom Smith and it is uncertain how he bounces back from his injury and his level of play.

Deepest part of the team might be the punt return corps. Niners now have 3 above average return men with different styles. Taylor will most likely yield the job to Dante Pettis who holds the NCAA career
TD record for PRs at 9. Then there is rookie CB DJ Reed who was a stellar return guy in college so each is very capable.

  62. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Thought I read that Warner will be Mike and Malcolm Smith the Will when suspension starts. Toomer and others will be competing.

Eventually it will be Warner Mike and Foster Will.

  63. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Seems this could be a theme song here?

    https://youtu.be/fL06Mrfrp3I

I believe Malcolm Smith is a 225 lb WILL LB, brought in for his knowledge of SEA’s 4-3 under. Undersized with an oversized FA contract. He should be gone next year, even if Foster gets injured.

The players at stack LB are Foster and Smith at Will, Warner and Toomer at Mike. In this D on runs the MIKE deals with blockers. WILL has more chance of being unblocked and first LB to contact RB.

Still have 42K in unused cap. Next year that could help pay for a quality stack LB and maybe a WR1. CHI got Danny Trevathan a couple years ago. Quality OT and edge from the draft.

  65. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

A relook at some of the incoming FA signings. If this guy stays healthy, wow.

What happened in SD? They got #3 in 2016 draft and took Bosa, where BPA and need matched for them. Needed edge rush with Ingram underperforming at that time.

Attaochu had good numbers in his 2015 sophomore season. Injuries to ankle and foot got him in 2016. Ingram got better. So he got pushed to backup.

    https://ninernoise.com/2018/05/11/49ers-2018-series-edge-jeremiah-attaochu/

One year prove it deal. If Jimmy GQ stays healthy we should be playing a lot more nickel and dime from opposing teams forced to pass more playing from behind. Good edge rotation with Marsh/Attaochu/Rd 1 edge 2019.

  66. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Have read that he can be a MIKE or WILL as well as SAM that this article points out.

    https://ninernoise.com/2018/04/05/korey-toomer-breaking-49ers-signing-linebacker

He is an upgrade over Smith? If Warner needs more snaps, Toomer could be the Mike while Foster suspended.

  67. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

6 FA’s this year. 3 longer term signings of Sherman/Richburg/McKinnon had lots of press. Great low risk/high reward one year deals for Cooper/Attaochu/Toomer speaks very well of the Lynch/Adam Peters/Martin Mayhew team.

Chuck, what is it with your reading comprehension. The obvious connection is Goodell to Winston. Why did Jane Skinner’s husband go light on Winston, the baseline is 6 games for sex crime stuff. He got off for the FSU rape from corrupt law enforcement prior to the NFL. Why is it a non-factor in that piss-ant 3 game suspension.

Your side lost the Kneelers issue. You may get a clue in 4 1/2 months. Maybe not. The barnyard bubble with you and RT may need more than a Nov 6 Wipeout to bring in real world sunlight.

Here’s one for y’all to chew on

    https://bleacherreport.com/san-francisco-49ers

  73. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

    Chew I did. Thx Chuck!

Saw that LT got 10 mil guaranteed. Hmm where is Chuck leading me.

    1st chew: http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/laken-tomlinson?id=2552345

So I say to myself “This Chuck might know his chit. How can a combine like that lead you to believe he can do OZ.”

2nd chew: Left Guard – Laken Tomlinson, San Francisco 49ers
    PFF Grade: 90.2

Elite Stat: Laken Tomlinson did not allow a pressure against the Rams.

LG Laken Tomlinson has had a largely uninspiring season with the 49ers, but he has ended it on a high note with back-to-back strong games. This was his best game of the season, even if it was against a Rams defense that was without their best player. Tomlinson didn’t allow any pressures in the game, marking the second game of his season with a perfect day in pass protection, and was impressive as a run blocker, putting down tape that will give him a shot at manning the position long-term.

3rd chew: LAKEN TOMLINSON, G, DETROIT LIONS
Coming into the league, Tomlinson was considered a solid, safe draft pick for the Lions. While he was likely to have some rookie struggles, the thought was that he could develop into a solid starter. His rookie season definitely had those struggles as he finished with an overall grade of 66.7, which ranked 46th out of 82 guards with at least 500 snaps played. His pass protection was a bright spot though, as he finished with a 22nd best pass blocking grade of 80.5 among guards.

The real concern with Tomlinson was the step back he seemed to take in 2016. Through the first five games of the season, he had an overall grade of 46.1, thanks to his huge struggles in the run game (37.0 run block grade). It was at that point that he lost his starting job to Graham Glasgow. Injuries pushed him back into a starting role, but he didn’t improve much. Tomlinson finished the season with an overall grade of 49.9, the eighth-lowest out of 64 guards with at least 500 snaps played. His 40.6 run blocking grade was the fourth-worst.

Based on his on-the-field play, Tomlinson is the least likely player on this list to have his fifth-year option picked up as it’s likely that Tomlinson won’t even have a starting job at the beginning of this season. But if Tomlinson wants to stick around for a fifth year with the Lions, he’ll need to show improvement at any opportunity he gets. He’s fighting an uphill battle, but a good season could completely turn that around.

Am not going to take a 4th chew of this chit. He is not OZ from the little there is on his performance. Does anyone have a paid football service that grades him, PFF etc.

Being the cynic(sp?) I usually am. Modest contract given to him to motivate Cooper and Garnett. Before trade deadline he will be gone even if they have to eat a portion of that contract.

  74. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

From a NN article is this:

Our friend Jeff Deeney, an analyst at Pro Football Focus, had some insight into Tomlinson’s performance last season. The first four games, Tomlinson ranked among the worst under PFF’s grading metrics. He ranked 44th or worse among guards each of those first four weeks. The remaining 11 weeks, he ranked 40th or worse in two games, and 20th or better in five games. The remaining games he ranked between 26th and 31st.

How did he do on OZ runs. I hope I am wrong. From his combine and struggling PFF grades I do not think he can do OZ, which requires lateral quickness and enough mobility to do reach blocks and sustain it until RB is past him.

Cooper had a minor surgery so his Dallas performance lands him a starter OG. They are hoping Garnett shows enough to win the other spot. LT gets traded before deadline. With contract now they can get full trade value for him.

  75. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

OTOH whatever success we had with OZ was done on Staley’s side. So LT may be good enough between Staley and Richburg. Any all 22 on zone runs to the left. Breida has to be in highlight clips.

  76. Uncle ChuckNo Gravatar says:

Glad to keep you cackling hens busy.

  77. robNo Gravatar says:

    cackle cackle

  78. robNo Gravatar says:

    TOM

“Left Guard – Laken Tomlinson, San Francisco 49ers
finished the season with back to back strong games PFF Grade: 90.2”

That’s what I’ve been waiting for. Now I know why we didn’t bring in a big name free agent or high draft pick at G. The coaches seem to like Tomlinson and believe that with a year under his belt in this system and Staley and Richburg on either side he’ll finally live up to his potential as a 1st rd. draft pick .

Now one of our other two former first rounders needs to step up to the plate at RG. Garnett most likely with the odd man out being the main backup .

  79. robNo Gravatar says:

    Lynch on Tomlinson

“Laken is a very talented player who has improved consistently since joining the team one week before last year’s season opener Lynch said. “This offseason, (Tomlinson’s) hard work and dedication paid off as he continued to progress and performed at a high level”

  80. Uncle ChuckNo Gravatar says:

    Woof!

  81. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Thx for the analysis guys. I hope laken can improve to OZ capability. Really shocked we let Sitton go elsewhere.

Seems LT is a stopgap until better OG comes along. He has 2 years to be the man. He is tradeable with that modest extension, at anytime.

IIRC, read that Shanahan’s OZ absolutely needs above average OT and C. OT out to the edge so EMLOS bounce/bang/bend decision can be made at everyone’s 3rd step. C needs to get off 1st block and get to 2nd level. Weaker OZ from OG can be tolerated. Allows lesser $$$ to commit there. Reason for no pursuit of Sitton or Norwell?

Also WCO short passing game can pick up more of the slack from a weaker run attack if the OL cannot execute it well. Jimmy G forced our hand early. Poor 1st Rd picks of Ward and Armstead hobble us. 2019 priority is edge. Gotta live with sloppy seconds at OG.

  82. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Don’t forget player for player trades, or to juice pick for pick trades.

Such as our 2019 1st plus LT and/or Armstead so we can pick a top edge. Or either of those two for a similar to Trevathan or Kendrick to upgrade stack LB.

Armstead needs to play healthy after the surgeries for trade value.

  83. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Foster handed a 2 game suspension

  84. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Foster could appeal it down to one game if he chooses or just take his medicine.

  85. robNo Gravatar says:

We dodged a bullet with Foster ! Pot charge last year and a weapons charge this year but only a two game suspension ! Let’s hope he gets it together and keeps his nose clean going forward !

  86. robNo Gravatar says:

“I accept the League’s decision and am sorry that my mistakes have hurt my team,” Foster said via a statement issued by the 49ers. “I have a responsibility to the 49ers, our fans and our community, and I am committed to learning from this situation and making better choices in the future. The support I have received over the last five months has been humbling, and I do not take it for granted.”

  87. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

So what impact on first two games will there be.

Both teams bigger on pass O. DET could be a high scoring shootout. Warner MIKE on both.

DET #20 Frank Ragnow C and 2nd Rd RB. Got them early so run O still not there for them maybe. Later in season DET may finally have a balanced O.

    MINN is a L. DET should be a W?

  88. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Better relationship with Goodell crowd with Lynch/Shanahan?

League needs Cali rivalries jump started. Will that keep random checks away from Foster. Cops in Los Gatos said his house wreaked of Pot. NFL sidestepped that so far.
